DATES TO REMEMBER
Dear Roxburgh Homestead
Community,
As I write to you now at the end
of week 6, I have been
unwell this week, but I am on
the mend and will be back on
deck next week. I wanted to
thank all the students, staff and
community for their efforts in
making our school the best it
can be.
Positive Climate for Learning
During the term, the students
have been working on the
following Positive Climate for
Learning goals -keep it clean,
concrete walking feet and
serene in the canteen. The
teachers have noticed the
students making these choices
in the yard and have rewarded
them with personalised raffle
tickets. Each raffle ticket is then
placed in the student draw and
our lucky winners are
announced at our Community
Assemblies as our Successful
Students of the Week. This
strategy is a part of our Positive
Climate for Learning approach
to support students to make
positive choices at school. I
want to congratulate Rostron
House (yellow) who won the
house points award cup last
week and celebrated by
chanting their House Song at
the community assembly on
Monday.
Excellence in Teaching and
Learning
Each week the teachers plan
together in their Professional
Learning Communities and
move through a learning
inquiry cycle. In this process,
they look at the student data
sets and their current
performance in literacy and
maths. Then they review the
Victorian Curriculum, engage in
professional reading and then
plan a learning sequence to
teach to the students. All of our
lessons have a building
Language for Learning thread
throughout, in the aim to
develop the student’s written
and spoken English language.
At least 12 months of growth is
our intention each year for
every student at Roxburgh
Homestead Primary.
Principal Update
The applications closed Sunday
for the process for our Principal
position. The panel will short
list the applicants and then
conduct the interviews in the
coming weeks. Then School
Council will be informed of the
decision and then we can
announce the successful
applicant to the school
community.
Community Attendance
Community attendance is one
of our school goals this year.
We have a motto that
‘everyday counts’ and we want
all students to be at school
provided they are fit and
healthy. We had an average of
24 days of absence per student
last year and that is a month of
learning lost. We had 94%
attendance in week 5 and in
week 6 we had 95% which is a
slight improvement. Let’s try to
continue to improve our
community attendance each
week.
Congratulations
I’d like to congratulate Julie
Musgrove our McPherson
Boulevard Crossing Supervisor
who has been nominated for
the Crossing Supervisor of the
Year. Julie has been keeping us
safe at the front of our school
for 16 years. Some of the
qualities raised in the
nomination has been her
longevity, being out the front of
our school supporting our
safety in rain, hail or shine and
the authentic relationships she
has built with the students. If
you’d like to further nominate
Julie, please see COMPASS for
the link. Well done and good
luck to Julie!
Student Led Conferences
Next week, Wednesday 11
March we have our Student Led
Conferences. This is a great
opportunity for the students to
share their learning, their
Term 1 Issue 3 06/03/2020
goals and next steps for development.
The school has a real ‘buzz’ about it on
this night and I am looking forward to it.
Just a friendly reminder that school will
finish at 12:30pm on this day and the
conferences will start at 1:00pm. Please
ensure that you book a time with your
child/children’s teacher via COMPASS,
alternatively if this night is not suitable
the teachers are prepared to make
other arrangements.
Keeping our community safe
In the interest of community safety, I’d
like to remind the community that the
staff car park is not a safe place to drop
students off nor as a thoroughfare for
walking through. Cars and trucks with
deliveries come and leave at all times of
day and therefore it is not a safe place.
We have two access gates at the front of
the school and encourage the
community to use these. As a
precaution the staff car park gates will
be closed during the school day.

Naming of New Greenvale Primary School
Do you want your say on the name of the new primary school in Greenvale?
The Victorian School Building Authority is seeking community input into developing the name of a new primary school
currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2021.
The interim name of the school is Greenvale North-West Primary School and it is located at 21 Greenvale Gardens
Boulevard, Greenvale.
Please forward any name suggestions to [email protected] by 23rd March, 2020.
A proposed name will be selected from a shortlist of potential names for formal consultation with all surrounding schools
and services before a recommendation is made to the Minister for Education. School names can recognise and reflect
culture, heritage and landscape and will be guided by the statutory requirements outlined in the Naming Rules for Places in
Victoria.
If you would like further information about this new school and other school building projects you can visit the Victorian
School Building Authority webpage at www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au

We made patterns!
I am making a
pattern.
My pattern is red,

I know this is a
pattern because it is
always repeating.

The Victorian Government have implemented a mobile phone use in school policy (formally issued by the Minister for Education under section 5.2.1(2)(b) of the Education & Training Reform Act) from the start of Term 1 2020. This means that students are not permitted to use mobile phones at school, unless for exceptional circumstances agreed to by the school. This information has been communicated to parents/guardians/families through the RHPS newsletter and to students. It has also featured heavily in the media during the end of 2019 and start of 2020. In recent weeks, we have noticed an increase of student phone use on school grounds by some students in Year 6. This includes using phones to take photographs and videos that are uploaded to social media (TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram). Some students have justified this behaviour by claiming they have "no phone credit" so therefore content cannot be uploaded. However once home using a Wi-Fi connection photographs and videos can then be uploaded. This poses a significant risk for student safety as students have been in full school uniform. Also some students who have featured in the photograph/video content have not given per-mission to be photographed or filmed. Each classroom has a safe lock up space for mobile phones to be placed during school hours. We understand that some students may need to bring a phone to school to contact parents/guardians after school but we ask that students turn off their phones once they enter school grounds and they can be turned on again once exiting at the end of the day. The increased number of mobile phone incidents in recent weeks are mostly from students who don't need to bring their phone to school at all and already have drop off/pick up arrangements in place. We recommend that unless your child needs their phone to contact you after school, there is no need to bring a phone to school. Student mobile phones, in a number of cases, are merely being used as a 'fashion accessory' to impress friends and to use for inappropriate social media use on school grounds. If you need to contact your child during school hours we recommend contacting the RHPS office on 9305 1688 and office staff can pass on information to classroom teachers to inform the student. Further information on this topic (including government policy) is available at: https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/spag/safety/Pages/mobilephones.aspx https://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/acts/education-and-training-reform-act-2006-74/077
This is not just a policy at Roxburgh Homestead Primary School but one for all schools across Victoria. We appreciate your co-operation with this issue. - Year 6 Team
