Thank you for your part in keeping our places special.

Mid UlsterAll your favourite places

Whether you’re looking for active ways to spend your leisure time, somewhere to explore with the children or inspirational days out with family and friends — there’s always a special place to explore.

Leave every day stresses behind and enjoy all the time in the world with us. There really is something to see, do and enjoy at all our places, every day of the year.

When you visit, donate, volunteer or join the National Trust, your support helps us to look after special places for ever, for everyone.

With many miles of beautiful coastline, huge stretches of countryside, panoramic views, historic houses and glorious gardens in our care, we have a wealth of treasures for all to enjoy.

Ardress HouseThis 17th-century farmhouse, elegantly remodelled in Georgian times, offers fun and relaxation for all the family. The cobbled farmyard with a dairy, smithy and threshing barn is the perfect spot to feed the resident chickens, while the nearby apple orchards are great for exploring. Children will enjoy visiting the small farmyard animals, having a go on the ride-on tractors and dressing-up.

The ArgorySurrounded by a wooded riverside estate, the interior of this Irish gentry house still evokes the eclectic tastes and interests of the MacGeough Bond family. The rose garden, with its unusual sundial, pleasure gardens and walks along the River Blackwater are ideal for exploring. There’s also fun for kids on the indoor bug trail and the zipline in the children’s play area.

SpringhillThis 17th-century plantation house, home of the Lenox-Conyngham family, is brought to life on guided tours. Discover the celebrated costume collection in the old laundry and kids ‘dressing up’ in the Costume Closet. Explore the walled garden and way marked trails, with views of Slieve Gallion and the Sperrins, and enjoy the natural play area.

Wellbrook Beetling MillStep back in time and discover how yarn was spun at Northern Ireland’s last working water-powered linen beetling mill. Hands-on demonstrations reveal the importance of the linen industry in 19th-century Ireland. The glen is ideal for relaxing walks and perfect for a picnic by the Ballinderry River.

Derrymore HouseResting peacefully in a landscape demesne, this 18th-century thatched cottage is rich in history and a great place for walks.

Gray’s Printing PressThe indelible story of printing is told behind this Georgian shop front in Strabane, once reputed as Ireland’s printing capital.

Around Belfast

Divis and the Black MountainSitting in the heart of the Belfast Hills, this 2,000-acre mosaic of upland heath and blanket bog is a great place for a wild countryside experience. There are four walking trails to explore, affording panoramic views across Belfast and a wealth of flora, fauna and archaeological remains to discover.

MinnowburnNestled in the heart of Lagan Valley Regional Park, this is a place to stroll, sit and play in. There are riverside, meadow and woodland walks, rich in wildlife, to explore. Wander along the Giant’s Ring trail and for fantastic views trace the stream along the banks of the River Lagan on the Terrace Hill trail.

Patterson’s Spade MillTravel back in time and witness history literally forged in steel at the last working water-driven spade mill in daily use in the British Isles. Dig up the history and culture of the humble spade and visit a bygone life fashioning steel into spades during the industrial era.

Belmont TowerFor more than 100 years this prominent Gothic-style late-Victorian building buzzed to the sound of children playing and learning in its former life as Belmont Primary School. Today this inspirational space has been restored and adapted to offer classes, conference facilities and tasty treats in the coffee shop.

Cregagh Glen and LisnabreenyFor views across Belfast and beyond, follow the tumbling stream through the wooded glen and rolling farmland to a rath on the summit of the Castlereagh Hills. Discover the Second World War memorial commemorating US servicemen who died in Northern Ireland and enjoy the natural play area.

Carrick-a-RedeConnected to the cliffs by a rope bridge across the Atlantic Ocean, this rocky island is the ultimate clifftop experience. The bridge was traditionally erected by salmon fishermen and if you are bold enough to make the crossing you will be rewarded with unique geology and wildlife. On a clear day enjoy views across the seas of Moyle to Rathlin Island and the Scottish islands.

Giant’s CausewayThe famous basalt columns at our iconic World Heritage Site, left by volcanic eruptions 60 million years ago, are home to a wealth of local history and legend. Follow in the footsteps of giants along the windswept walking trails to discover flora and fauna of international importance as well as fantastic bird watching. Indoors, the interactive exhibition in the Visitor Centre unlocks the secrets of the landscape.

Antrim and North Coast

Downhill Demesne and Hezlett HouseThe sheltered gardens, Mussenden Temple and striking mansion ruins bear testament to the eccentricity of the Earl Bishop who once made this 18th-century demesne his home. With views over long white beaches and the mountains of Donegal it is a wonderful place for a refreshing walk or fun in the children’s adventure play area. Nearby at Hezlett House, life in a rural 17th-century cottage is told through the people who once lived there.

In Northern Ireland 3 out of 4 places cannot fund their own conservation.

An Area of Special Scientific Interest, it has some of Northern Ireland’s largest colonies of cliff nesting seabirds and offers views of the famous Antrim coast.

White Park Bay Embraced by ancient dunes, Neolithic settlements and passage tombs, this arc of white sand nestles between two headlands on the North Antrim coast. Home to a range of rich habitats and a myriad of wildlife, its secluded location makes it ideal for quiet relaxation and peaceful walks.

Portstewart StrandSweeping along the edge of the north coast, this 2-mile stretch of golden sand offers uninterrupted views of the coastline. It’s an ideal place for lazy picnics, surfing and long walks into the wildlife-rich sand dunes. You can also enjoy bird watching from the bird hide on the Bann Estuary, a sanctuary for waders, wildfowl and nesting birds.

Castle CooleOne of the finest examples of Neo-classical architecture in Ireland, Castle Coole has an elegant and restrained exterior, while the interior is brimming with opulence, luxury and colour. Guided tours also reveal life below the stairs in the servants’ rooms and quarters. The surrounding rolling parkland, interspersed with mature oaks, woodlands and paths, is perfect for refreshing walks and fun in the outdoor play area.

CromHome to islands, ancient woodland and historical ruins, this 2,000-acre demesne sits in a tranquil landscape on the peaceful southern shores of Upper Lough Erne. One of Ireland’s most important conservation areas, it has many rare species and is great for relaxing walks, cycling and boat trips, or overnight camping.

Florence CourtOn a guided tour of this welcoming Georgian mansion hear stories about the Cole family, and their staff, who lived here for over 250 years. Outdoors take a gentle walk or long cycle along 10 miles of trails in the forest park. County Down

Castle WardThis 18th-century house has two distinctly different facades, classical and gothic, set within an 820-acre walled demesne overlooking Strangford Lough. Explore 21-miles of walking, cycling and horse riding trails. Visit the water-powered corn mill, impressive laundry and tack room, and stroll around the Sunken Garden. Discover old Castle Ward, the iconic filming location for ‘Winterfell’ in HBO’s Game of Thrones. There’s also the children’s Victorian play centre and adventure playground.

Mount StewartFilled with the spirit and character of Edith, Lady Londonderry, the house and gardens are bursting with imagination, colour and passion. Explore this exquisite home and see a world-class collection of paintings and many other internationally significant items. Stroll around the celebrated formal gardens and lakeside walk to catch a glimpse of our red squirrels. Then discover the natural play area and demesne trails through a landscape lost in time.

The MournesThese famous wildlife-rich mountains are criss-crossed by well-marked coastal and mountain paths. Great for exploring, we look after paths to Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh, as well as the Mourne coastal footpath. Enjoy a spectacular walk on the wildside with views over Dundrum Bay.

Murlough National Nature ReserveHome to seals, Neolithic sites and Ireland’s first nature reserve, Murlough is one of the most extensive examples of dune landscape in Ireland. A network of paths and boardwalks through these ancient dunes, woodland and heath makes it ideal for relaxed walks and spotting a wonderland of wildlife.

Rowallane GardenThis inspirational 52-acre garden is ‘a world apart’. The formal and informal garden spaces are home to magical features mingled with native and exotic plants, such as drifts of rare rhododendrons. It is a great place for a leisurely walk, family fun or just to relax on a seat and soak up the atmosphere. Leave the outside world behind and immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.

Strangford LoughUncover the tidal treasures of Britain’s largest sea lough and one of Europe’s key wildlife habitats. Enjoy bracing coastal walks, delicate wild flowers and butterflies, rock pools brimming over with marine life and some of the best birdwatching in the UK and Ireland. The lough is the winter home for up to 90 per cent of the world’s light-bellied brent geese and Northern Ireland’s first Marine Conservation Zone.

What’s onFrom guided walks and boat trips, music and craft fairs to children’s events and wildlife spotting, we’ve a fantastic array of activities for everyone. It’s time to start planning fun days out for all the family.

Hit the dirt Put the family’s washing machine to the test. Here are our favourite ways to get really, really dirty outdoors.

Build a cosy den Make your own little hide-away. Gather some branches and twigs from the woods and let your imagination go wild.

Run around in the rain Never mind if it’s raining outside, put some wellies on and go puddle-jumping!

Hunt for bugs Crawl through the mud and track down a beetle, or hold a wriggling worm in your hand.

Climb a tree With so many trees around, how do you know which one to climb? Find one with strong branches you can reach from the ground.

Discover what’s in a pond or river Take your net and go dipping in the river. Remember to return any mini beasts that you find back to the water.

Go outdoors, keep track online After a day exploring the great outdoors, kids can keep track of their adventures on our 50 Things app. They can unlock games, earn badges and collect secret rewards. And, of course, find out even more ways to go outside and get stuck into nature.

Pick up a 50 things to do scrapbook when you visit our special places—and tick off as many wild activities as you can.

Download the app and discover even more wild things to do at nationaltrust.org.uk/50things

We want kids to have fun, but we also want them to play safe, so we recommend all these activities are supervised by an adult.

50 things to do before you’re 11¾It’s time to go wild! We want kids to get messy, mucky and soggy. We want them to build a den out of twigs, run around in the rain, scrape their knees exploring a cave, plunge their hands into a gloopy rock pool. That’s why we’ve come up with 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾.

We’re a charity founded in 1895 by three people who saw the importance of our nation’s heritage and open spaces and wanted to preserve them for everyone to enjoy. Over 120 years later these values are still at the heart of everything we do.

From protecting wildlife habitats to welcoming visitors, helping in our shops and tea-rooms or providing administrative support, we’ve lots of opportunities to get involved.

Over 2,500 people volunteer for the National Trust in Northern Ireland — gifting around 160,000 hours annually.

If you want to make a difference — for an hour, a day, or maybe more — just get in touch with your nearest National Trust place. We would love to hear from you.

Your skills, help and time are welcome.

Thank you for your support
