Dear Parents, Students and Friends of John XXIII College

The College has had a succession of ‘themed’ weeks at school recently—Book Week, Science Week, Languages Week and this week is Mathematics Week. It was wonderful therefore this week to receive great news about the success of our Mathematicians in the Australian National Maths Competition. Daniel Song was awarded a National Prize and the College received 5 high distinctions, 45 distinctions and 72 credits out of 190 entries. I am no Mathematician but even I can work out what a big percentage of students achieved well. When it comes to Mathematics I have always had to rely on prayer. This was the prayer used by Mrs Amanda Hird at our staff prayer on Monday.

The Mathematician’s Prayer by Franco Mar N. Sapigao

I am a product of God’s love though I’m just a fraction of His work.

He is the prime factor of my composite existence

I shall not fear For He alone divides my worries

and multiplies my blessings He teaches me not to get even in odd times with my enemies

The sum of my sins and misgivings shall never equal

his infinite mercy and understanding He grants me wisdom to figure out the difference of right from wrong

After all I am just a man who is bounded by his limits

and is but a derivative of God’s plan But the Lord’s goodness is continuous

His love for me is unconditional To my being His grace is integral

He is my light plus strength and the least minus to my salvation

the reason of all my function And now with these I do believe

“seven days without prayer will really make one weak”

Congratulations to Mrs Morrell, Mrs Leech and the outstanding cast of the Year 3 Musical, “The Wind In The Willows! The singing, dancing and narration were all superb; the costumes and makeup were highly professional and the audiences were warm and appreciative. The perfect combination for theatre magic!

The joy and sense of accomplishment experienced by the children was something that everyone in the audience could sense from curtain rise to fall. Year 3 Musical Congratulations to Mrs Shelley Morell, Miss Lisa Monastra and Miss Brigit Santelli on the wonderful production of “Wind in the Willows” as the 2009 Year Three Musical. The children were real stars and we wouldn’t be surprised if they are all stage stars of the future! Year 3-6 Interhouse Carnival Congratulations to Mr John Alderman on another well organised and well run athletics carnival. The children competed admirably and displayed great sportsmanship. Congratulations must go to Loreto House, who won the carnival. (Mary Ward must have been looking down on them on this 400 Anniversary year) Numeracy Week Last week in the primary we celebrated Numeracy Week. The activities organised by each cluster highlighted to the children how much fun mathematics can be.

If you think you may need the blazer for Speech Night, please keep it – if you re-hire it will cost you another $40. Blazer must be returned by the end of November. If this is not done, then you will need to keep the blazer until March next year, when the shop is again able to cope with refunds. Refund at that time will be $80. Year 12 Day of Invitation - Friday 25th September 2009 The final day of formal classes for Year 12 students is Friday 25th September. On this day the College aims to farewell students in a pleasant and dignified way. It is a day to celebrate with our Year 12 students and is part of their rite of passage from school. The day is called “Day of Invitation” because all Year 12 students are invited by the Principal to attend. Where students digress from the expected code of behaviour and expectations of the College, the Principal may withdraw a student’s invitation to attend. Please note that muck up type activities are not part of College life at John XXIII College and generally Year 12 students finish their secondary school days in a dignified way. The program for the Day of Invitation is as follows: Friday 25th September. 9.00am – 9.45am: Mass in Chapel (All students to be seated by 9.00am). 9.45am: Principal’s farewell to Year 12 students. 10.00am-10.30am: Principal’s morning tea in the Roncalli Hall. 10.30am-11.00am: Primary Years farewell Liturgy and time capsule. 11.00am – 12.00: Farewell Assembly for years 7 -12. 12.00: Farewell Guard of honour and photos. Year 12 students will be required to be on site by 8.50am so that they can be seated for a 9.00am start. They will not go to Tutor Group. Some will arrive with parents who will attend the Mass and morning Tea. As in previous years all students must present to the College dressed respectfully and appropriately attired in College Uniform. Parents are invited to join the year 12 students for Mass and Morning Tea and to form a guard of honour at the conclusion of Assembly—approximately 12 noon.

The Australian Mathematics Competition – Results 2009 The Mathematics Department is proud to announce that John XXIII College has achieved some outstanding results in the AMC this year. This year John XXIII College had entrants across Years 6 to 12 participate in the competition. The AMC, a particularly challenging problem solving competition, is contested by about half a million students across 35 countries. Our congratulations are extended to Daniel Song in Year 11 who has been awarded a prize for achieving in the top 0.3% of his year level in the State. This excellent result is indication of the high calibre of Daniel’s mathematical ability. Five students were awarded a certificate of high distinction, placing them in the top 2-5% of the State for their year level. These students are: Natalie Darmago in Year 7 (top 1%), Kevin Mailoa in Year 11 (top 1%), Anton Karam in Year 11 (top 4%), Kenny Oo in Year 11 (top 5%) and Kelvin Oo in Year 12 (top 1%). Additionally 45 students were awarded certificates of distinction placing them in the top 15-25% of the State for their year level. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the efforts of all of the students who sat the competition, 65% of whom achieved a credit certificate or better (i.e. the top 50% or better of students in the State). Health Information

HEAD LICE INFORMATION What are Head Lice? Head lice are tiny insect parasites that live on the human head, feeding on the scalp several times a day. Head lice reproduce by laying their eggs (nits) on the hair shaft close to the scalp. They are not dangerous, don’t carry diseases and are not a sign of poor hygiene. How are head lice spread? Head lice are spread by head-to-head contact with another person who has head lice, e.g. when doing group work at school, playing, or hugging.

Head lice can run from one head to another in seconds. Head lice cannot fly, jump or swim, but they can sometimes ‘trapeze’ from one hair to another. Brushes and combs are unlikely to transfer head lice and do not transfer viable eggs, as these are very hard to detach from the hair shaft. Head lice are not spread through bed linen, clothing or head gear, as they do not leave the scalp unless they are dead or dying. Eggs (nits) do not fall off until weeks after they have hatched as the egg shells are glued tightly to the hair shaft. How do I look for head lice? Dry head checks are unreliable, due to the speed

at which head lice move. Saturate dry hair with hair conditioner, then comb in

sections with a metal fine-tooth ‘nit’ comb. Wipe the comb on a white paper towel and examine them with a strong light or magnifying glass to look for head lice and eggs. What do I do if I find head lice?

Check all household members (use hair conditioner).

Choose one of the treatments from the Department of Health’s Fact Sheet (10 day hair conditioner treatment or insecticide treatment)

Inform the class teacher or nurse and inform any other contacts. Notes will be sent to Parents in the class.

Parent/guardian of child with head lice will be given confirmation of treatment form to complete and return.

When treatment is completed. Check the hair regularly, e.g. weekly, for any further head lice infestation.

Early treatment can prevent spread to further close contacts.

For further information on treatment and management of head lice go to www.health.wa.gov.au/headlice.

Book Week 2009 Book Safari All at John XXIII College had a trek through the jungle in the library during book week. From the littlest pre-primary to super keen year 12 students to impressive teachers, we had huge participation in great entwining activities. Jan Ramage, a local author with a passion for the environment, who has written Eyes in the Night and Tuart Dwellers, spoke with the years 1-4 about her books and the flora and fauna that can be found in our own area. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and showed the children examples of the plants that can be found nearby and explained how animals survive amongst the plants. Jayne Lyons, who has a strong connection with the school, talked to the year 5s and 6s. She is very entertaining and has the students almost believing the tales she has to tell. Her books are 100% Wolf and 100% Hero and she has her own website which she encourages children to visit and they have the opportunity to win a prize. All the students in primary school went to see the play “Book Safari” which was really enjoyable. Each lunchtime the students were able to come to the library to do quizzes, face painting, scavenger hunts and students who borrow the greatest number of books from the library were invited to lunch as a thank you for their use of the resources. We had Year 12 students vying to be the mascot elephant or painting the little students faces.

We had all the primary students dress as a character for the grand parade along with their amazing teachers. This is a very enjoyable part of the week and has a grand tradition. Thank you to everyone that takes part and those who help them to be so fantastically costumed. Also to Mrs Fry and Father Stephen Curtin, a visiting Jesuit priest, who assisted me with the judging of the parade, an awesome responsibility. The library was decorated to represent the jungle by the very clever library staff. From the entry through to the grass huts in the senior fiction area, the l i b r a r y l o o k e d a m a z i n g .

The wonderful library staff, along with the English Department, invited all the staff in the school to visit the library for a yummy morning tea and to appreciate what book week is all about. To quote Carlos Ruiz Zafón, author of The Angel’s Game, “every book has a soul, the souls of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and dream about it.” The authors of the books who won the Children’s Book Council of Australia prizes would no doubt agree that their books have their heart and souls in them and we are the lucky ones who get to read the amazing Australian books that have been written for Australian students of all ages. Thank you to everyone at JTC for an amazing Book Week.
