Dear Parents, Children and Friends,
P&F FAMILY FUN DAY
It was a pleasure to be a part of the fun at
the meet and greet on February 24. The
relaxed atmosphere and wonderful
organisation enabled many families to enjoy
each other’s company and the children to
have a lot of fun on the bouncy castles. The
catering was sensational with delicious hot
beef rolls and a sausage sizzle provided.
Thank you to all families and staff members
who attended; and a special big thank you
to the P&F members who organised this
event. It was a great start to our school
year!
WELCOME FATHER RENALD
Father Renald Anthony has joined the
Goldfields Parish community, and we had
the pleasure of welcoming him to the
school last Thursday. Fr Renald was
previously working in the Whitfords’ parish
in Perth. He is looking forward to his time
in the Goldfields.
MAD FOOD SCIENCE PROGRAM
With support from the P&F all students
from Pre-primary – Year 6 were able to
take part in in this 90 minute educational
experience today. An important part of our
school’s Health program and Canteen menu
is the focus on healthy eating, and this
incursion certainly added to the children’s
knowledge. A parent seminar on this topic
is being held in the Kamballie Grandstand
from 4.45 – 5.45pm this evening, and all
parents of St Joseph’s are invited to attend
free of charge. If you haven’t registered yet,
but would like to attend, please do so at:

PARENT/SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS
The link between school and home is such
an important one. We need your support in
order to provide the best education
possible for each individual child. Therefore,
should there be an issue of concern at
school or home, it is essential that it is
discussed as soon as possible so that it can
be resolved. Teachers are more than willing
to make time to meet with you, as is the
case with Mr Shaw or myself. It is as simple
as contacting your teacher directly or
making an appointment through the front
office.
ASH WEDNESDAY DAY MASS
I would like to congratulate our Year 4-6
students on the manner in which they
participated in the Ash Wednesday Mass last
week. They showed great reverence and
were fully engaged in the responses during
mass and the singing of the hymns. It
certainly made me proud to be principal of
St Joseph’s School!
SCHOOL FEES
Many thanks to the families who have
responded quickly to the accounts that
were issued last fortnight, or are part of a
direct debit contribution. Our school is
similar in some ways to any other business,
and relies heavily on prompt payment to
meet the financial demands it faces. I realise
that, at times, circumstances mean that you
may need to make other arrangements to
pay your fees, or may need extra time to do
so. If this is the case, please make an
appointment to discuss this with me at a
confidential meeting.
THANKYOU
A big thankyou to NJ Industries for kindly
donating several steel posts for our Kindy/
Pre Primary playground shade cover. Our
little ones will certainly benefit from the
extra cover once this is finalised.
May God bless our school and those within
it.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SPELLING TEST
Last week students from Years One to Six sat the
South Australian Spelling Test (SAST). This is a
standardised test of spelling achievement for students
in the age range of six to sixteen years. The SAST acts
as a screening instrument, enabling teachers to
determine the spread of spelling ability within their
classroom and identify students who may require
additional assistance. The SAST also provides teachers
with each student’s spelling age, in comparison to
their chronological age. This assessment tool
complements our recent Words Their Way spelling
placement testing.
DIANA RIGG TESTING
Last week students in Kindergarten and Pre-Primary
sat the Diana Rigg Pre-Literacy Screen with their
classroom teacher. This assessment tool provides the
classroom teacher with an understanding of each
students developing reading, alphabet and spelling
skills. Students in Year One and Year Two sat the
Diana Rigg Junior Reading Profile Assessment and the
data gained will provide your child’s teacher with an
understanding of how they are progressing in these
areas.
PAT-READING TESTING
Our Year Three to Six teachers recently administered
the Progressive Achievement Test in Reading
(PAT-R). This is a thoroughly researched and normed
test for measuring and tracking student achievement
in reading comprehension and vocabulary. It provides
teachers with objective information for setting
realistic learning goals and planning effective
programmes.
INFORMAL PROSE INVENTORIES
Last week, class teachers administered the Informal
Prose Inventory (IPI) to students above reading level
30. IPIs are a test of a student’s reading ability. They
provide the classroom teacher with information about
a student’s reading ability and use of strategies to
decode and comprehend texts. These tests provide a
benchmark against which teachers can measure
progress and plan lessons, with a greater
understanding of their students’ strengths and
weaknesses.
THREE WAY INTERVIEWS
Three-Way Interviews will take place on Wednesday
5th April from 12:30pm. A letter will be sent home this
week to each child from Pre-Primary to Year Six,
indicating the times that your child’s teacher is
available. Please circle at least three preferences and
number them from 1 to 3 to indicate the times that you
are available for your interview and return this as soon
as possible. Confirmation of interview times will follow
shortly. These interviews provide your child with the
opportunity to share their thoughts, as the learner,
about how they are progressing. Students will share a
number of work samples with you and receive feedback
from their parent and teacher. These interviews provide
yourself, your child and your child’s teacher with a
chance to reflect on your child’s learning this term and
set goals for Term Two.
Mr Luke Shaw - Assistant Principal
The St Joseph’s School SEEDS program is aimed at
working with and supporting students and teachers to
use Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the
classroom. It is about learning how to be creative and
critical thinkers and knowing what to do with all the
good “things” we are interested in, know and learn
about!
The SEEDS program is facilitated by Mrs Julie Gardner
(that’s me!!) and comes in many modes, forms and
styles. At times, students will be selected based on their
academic achievements to participate in special projects
or competitions, or I will work with teachers and
students in the classroom providing them with the
support and assistance they need to make sure these
important HOTS are getting used in the classroom
context.
At present, I am completing my collection of data which
comes from a variety of different assessments. This will
assist me in ascertaining which of our students are in
need of extension. A variety of assessments are
analysed, all of which will evaluate a multiplicity of the
thinking and learning capabilities of students.
Over the past few weeks I have been collating the above
information and have been lucky enough to be able to
get in to some of our classrooms and work with the
children and teachers on developing those HOTS right
from the get go!

program, please contact me via email :

CURRICULUM NEWS
ST JOSEPH’S DAY
The Feast Day of St Joseph is the 19th March. On
Friday 17th March, we will be having our annual St
Joseph’s Day Mass and Fair. We celebrate St Joseph’s
Day as a school community. Our day will begin with a
whole school mass at 9.00am to celebrate our very
special feast day and our patron Saint, St Joseph. I
invite all members of our community to join us at
Mass.
St Joseph is our patron saint. Joseph was a simple
carpenter with a lot of faith. God chose Joseph to be
the foster father of His Son, the husband of Mary, and
the head of the Holy Family because he was a holy
man. God gave him all the graces he needed to be a
worthy head of the holiest family on earth.
From 1.30pm – 2.30pm, the school community will
gather for our annual St Joseph’s Fair Day, where the
children will be invited to purchase items and
participate in fun activities to raise money for the
missions. This is a very special day on our school
calendar and I warmly invite our parents and
parishioners to join us. Please ensure your child
comes to school with no more than $5 to spend on
the day at the fair. This should come to school on the
day in a labelled zip lock bag or purse.
PROJECT COMPASSION
All families should have recently received a Project
Compassion box. The boxes are designed to raise
money for Caritas Australia during the season of Lent.
Families are invited to donate money to the boxes and
return them to school at the end of Lent. We will
collect these boxes by the end of the term. If your
family missed out on a box, please see Mrs Miller in
the office.
SACRAMENTAL COMMITMENT MASS
A reminder that all children and parents intending to
take part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, First
Communion or Confirmation this year are to attend a
Sacramental Commitment Mass this weekend. As the
Sacraments are part of our parish faith life, all children
and their parents will attend the commitment Masses
over the same weekend, regardless of when the
Sacrament is celebrated. At this Mass, along with the
parents and candidates, the parish will also be asked
to make a commitment to help in the sacramental
journey of your child. You will need to attend either
the 8:00am or 5:30pm Mass at All Hallows Church
this Sunday, 12th March.
Mr Luke Shaw
Assistant Principal
We are now in the season of Lent; this is a time when
we try to pray more, to strengthen our relationship
with God. This is also a time to think less of ourselves,
be more loving and giving, like Christ.
God of Love,
through this Lenten journey,
purify my desires to serve you.
Free me from any temptations to judge others,
to place myself above others.
Please let me surrender even my impatience with
others, that with your love and your grace,
I might be less and less absorbed with myself, and more
and more full of the desire to follow you,
in laying down my life according to your example.
May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring
us to everlasting life.
Amen.
