Chairman’s Message

The holiday season is upon us and I’m sure some of us were able to contribute to Black Weekend festival of spending and getting deals! Whether you’re celebrating Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or Boxing Day, I want to wish each of you and your family a wonderful December holiday season. And with the new year coming fast, please mark your calendars and reserve the 2

nd Saturday of each month for your 99s meeting, guest

speaker, and lunch. There’s a great deal planned through June and I don’t want you to miss out on all the flying fun.

Happy Holidays! Marilyn

THE NINETY-NINES’ AMELIA EARHART MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIP

WINS $10,000 GRANT FROM LIGHTSPEED AVIATION (AGAIN!) Three cheers for Lightspeed and the Lightspeed Aviation Foundation and the members who worked so hard to get votes for The 99s! For the third year in a row The 99s Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund will receive a $10,000 Lightspeed Aviation Foundation grant. Lightspeed awarded five $10,000 grants to the five aviation nonprofits who received the most online votes in the 2012 grant competition. Thanks to all the supporters and members who cast their votes and encouraged their co-workers, friends and family to vote for The 99s. You can see the Lightspeed award ceremony at youtube and watch Martha Phillips express our gratitude to Lightspeed Aviation Foundation and our supporters. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwhcxRtEXD0&feature= The Lightspeed grant competition inspired us to reach out to the aviation community and beyond and tell them about our organization, our scholarship program and our enthusiasm for flight. Thanks again for all the hard work in helping us win the Lightspeed award.

-A message from Martha Phillips, 99s President and Susan Liebeler, 99s Fundraising Chair

Vice Chair’s Corner (Continued) There won’t be a meeting in December. Instead, we are having our Holiday Party/luncheon at the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City. The restaurant has a festive holiday atmosphere and is the perfect place for our luncheon. Last year was the first year that we held it there and all of the feed-back was to have our party there again this year. For those of you who have not yet registered for the luncheon but would like to attend, please call Charleen at (813) 835-9380, since the Columbia may still be able to accommodate you this week. The upcoming January meeting on 1/12, will be held at the Wauchula Airport, hosted by Angie & Kristen Inderwiesen. This will also be a fun “flying” event with a spot landing competition, etc. Mark your calendars. We look forward to seeing you at the December 8

th Holiday party-lunch!

From the November edition of the 99s’

Southeast Section’s “Flightline”

Newsletter:

While not strictly an aviation accomplishment, this

is an accomplishment none-the-less. On October 26,

2012, Ying Gao “Laura” became our newest United

States citizen. Along with that honor and privi-

lege comes all of the freedoms that we all enjoy as

US citizens… including our freedom of flight!

Laura: we are proud to have you among the ranks

of our citizens and even more proud that you are a

99. Congratulations!

Sophia Payton came across this photo in the

“Grasshopper Flyer – Women Pilots Club of

Florida”. They had a fly-in and had lunch at the

Hangar in St. Pete. at which time the club

presented her a cake on Oct. 27th.

Congratulations to

Laura Gao!

Message from Jim Pappas regarding

Nancy Wright

Nancy is resting and relaxing at home after a second surgery on her foot. She is planning on attending the 99s Christmas Celebration.

The Suncoast Chapter of the 99s thanks Landmark Aviation for their generosity in giving

us a $.50/gallon discount on AvGas for our meeting in November and in allowing us to use

their facilities for our event.

The Ninety-Nines, Inc. 99s Email Networking Forums

The Ninety-Nines has three eNetworking Forums for women pilots: The 99s Email Network is for the educational discussion and productive exchange of infor-mation on topics pertinent to The Ninety-Nines and 99s Members, and is for 99s Members

only. The 99s Flight Training Forum is for the educational discussion and productive exchange of information on topics pertinent to flight training, flight safety, flight currency, aviation education, women pilots participating in these activities and the related activities of The Ninety-Nines and 99s Members. For 99s Members and approved Guests. The Pro 99s Network is for the educational discussion and productive exchange of information on topics pertinent to pilot careers, women in professional pilot careers and the related activities of The Ninety-Nines and 99s Members. For 99s Members and approved Guests. Why email networking? Networking with women pilots: Reduce your isolation. This is an ideal forum for communicating and connect-ing with women pilots worldwide whom you might not otherwise meet. Learning: A unique, safe place to ask questions, take advantage of others’ expertise, or share your own ex-periences about flying or being a 99. Problem-solving: If you have a question, ask. You will hear from other 99s with similar interests and issues, and everyone can benefit from the discussion. It’s Fun! To learn more about the 99s Email Networking Forums, go to www.ninety-nines.org/index.cfm/email_networks.htm. Here’s how to Sign Up! In the white box close to the top of the page, click on Easy Sign-Up. On the Sign-Up page, enter your name, email address and a password (enter this twice). Enter your Chapter and Section. Members do not need to fill out the address information. Then select which network(s) you wish to join. It will default to Digest if you don’t check the Individually box. Digest means you will get one email a day with everything that has been posted the previous date. Individual-ly means you will receive the emails as they are posted. Check that you understand and agree, then click on the ‘Sign me up!’ box. You will start receiving emails within three days. For questions, email the Network Administrator at [email protected]

Treasurer's report from Sept. and Oct. was passed around, Marilyn read it to the group and it was approved. A generous donation from Eleanor Sharpe's estate benefited both the Space Camp and the Sun 'n Fun building funds. COMMITTEE REPORTS Sun 'n Fun (Apr 9-14, 2013): Barbara Yeninas reported the building will be painted and ready by Jan/Feb. The AC unit will be serviced. WASP lunch to be held in the Buehler Hangar. Send payments ($18) to Nancy Wright at 122 Highland Rd., Tarpon Springs, FL 34689. If you would like to sponsor a WASP for luncheon please contact Nancy at [email protected] Membership: Barbara Yeninas is compiling list of chapter members who have not renewed for SE Section Governor Terry Carbonell, who will contact the past members and invite them to rejoin the 99s. 99 News: Nancy Wright and Marie Grein are working with 99 News Editor-in-Chief Bobbi Roe on an article about the Space Camp scholarship. As always, please send any news (aviation events, volunteer opportuni-ties, photos, milestones, new ratings, etc.) to Sophia Payton at [email protected] NIFA (National Intercollegiate Flying Assoc.): Barbara Yeninas and Marilyn Shafer attended NIFA as judges. Some of the events included power off landings, short field landings, timed written tests and route planning. Barbara and Marilyn had a great time & highly recommend you consider joining them when they return next year. The Ninety-Nines were well represented and acknowledged at NIFA. OLD BUSINESS Scrapbook: As requested at the last meeting, Marilyn brought the Chapter's scrapbook. If someone would like to volunteer to be the keeper of the book and the contact for members to send their photos to for the scrapbook, please contact Marilyn [email protected]. The scrapbook will be brought to SNF. Nancy Wright has a published book of 99s' bios that she will bring to a future meeting. Email Forums: As mentioned at the last meeting, there are 3 email forums that members can access and participate in on the 99s International website. Information on each forum was mentioned and handouts were available at the meeting. The same info is also included in this newsletter. Section Membership Contest: As announced at the Fall SE Section meeting in Ft. Myers last year, the Section had a contest to see which Chapter could increase their membership the most. FL Suncoast was one of winners (in a three-way tie w/ Paradise Coast and Alabama Chapters). The prize is a Compass Rose tile at the 99s Headquarters in the Chapter's name. We should receive the certificate in the mail from HQ soon. Amelia Earhart Memorial Fund Scholarships: Deadline to submit your application to the Chapter AE Chairman was Dec. 1. NEW BUSINESS Board of Directors Meeting: Terry Carbonell, SE Section Governor, attended the meeting and passed on an update to Marilyn. The main focus was on membership - to recruit new members and to retain current members as membership overall is down. Another topic was to dispel the myth that the 99s are a social club and to instead focus on the educational programs, scholarships, etc. Each Chapter is asked to include the education theme in Minutes, websites and newsletters. Section and Chapter Elections: Deadline for submission to the Nominating Committee is January 15, 2013 for the Southeast Section 2013 - 2015 term. Info and nomination form found in the Nov. issue of the Flight Line newsletter - link below. Stay tuned for more info regarding Suncoast Chapter elections. http://www.sesection99s.org/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/flightlinenovember2012.pdf (con’t next page)

SUNCOAST CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES - NOV. 10, 2012, OCALA, FL (Continued)

Changes to International By-Laws: Must be submitted by Dec. 31 - bring your submissions to the next meeting. See more info in November's Dispatch newsletter on the 99sInternational website. Compass Rose Tiles: Bids for the one and only remaining gold tile were due to Mary Wunder by Dec. 1st. Winner to be notified by Dec 7. What is the Compass Rose? Click here to learn more. http://www.ninety-nines.org/index.cfm/compass_rose.htm Why Isn't a Printed Copy of the Directory Included in Our Membership?: A printed copy would be out of date by the time it was printed, whereas information in the online directory is constantly updated. The cost of printing a directory has increased too much. A CD is sent to each member with the same information as the printed version. A limited number of printed copies are still available for purchase. Women's Air and Space Museum in Cleveland, OH: Sophia Payton shared their newsletter, brochures and membership applications with the group and encouraged all members to visit the museum. Everyone enjoyed the great accommoda-tions (and the delicious homemade muffins!) A warm welcome to Christine Stanaback, an Air Force Reserve KC-135 pilot who attended her first 99s meeting today. And to Ann Smith, a pilot who joined us from the UK. We were honored to have Blanche O'Brien, 99s Chairman from 1952 - 1953 and Lifetime 99s Member join us. As well as WASP Pilot Marguerite Bernhardt, who flew T6s, Stearmans and Cubs. Several members flew to this meeting, including new member Abbie Pasmore, who got checked out in the plane she flew to the meet-ing earlier the same morning! The meeting was adjourned and after a brief intermission CarolAnn Garratt gave a truly remarkable presenta-tion, which included some highlights of her 2nd around-the-world flight in 2008 and more detail of her 3rd flight around the globe in 2011. CarolAnn funds her flights entirely from her own resources; ensuring 100% of dona-tions and proceeds from her books and DVDs go directly to finding a cure for ALS. She has raised over $360,000 so far!
