CourseDescription:Thiscourseaimstohelpstudentsdeveloptheirlanguageskillsinfourareas-speaking,listening,reading,andwriting-inKoreanattheadvancedlevel.Itcoversgrammarandvocabulary,readingcomprehension,fluency,conversationmanners,andpublicspeaking.EmphasiswillbeontheappropriateuseofKoreaninavarietyofsituationsincludingschools,companies,andformal/informalmeetings.ThiscoursealsoenablesstudentstounderstandKoreancultureandhistoryandtodevelopcross-culturalinsightsbycomparingKoreansocietywithUSsociety.Koreanhistory,imageofKorea,andcurrentsocialtrendsinKoreawillbediscussedforasolidunderstandingofKoreancultureinwhichKoreanlanguageisembedded.Evaluation:

(1) Classparticipation(5%)andAttendance(5%):Studentsarerequiredtoreadtheassignedmaterialsfor

eachweekandbepreparedtodiscusstheminclass.Classattendanceisrequired.Ifyouare15minuteslateforclass,thiswillbecountedasahalfabsence.Studentsareexpectedtoattendeveryclassandarriveontime.Poorattendance,frequentlatenessandearlydeparturewillaffectyourgrade.Ifyourabsencesexceed5classes,youmayfailthecourse.Ifyourabsencesexceed2classes,youwillnotreceiveanAregardlessofyoursemesterscores.2latearrivalsequaloneabsence.

(2) Assignment(25%):1)StudentsmustsubmittwofreewritingessayseveryMondaystartingfrom9/19.Atleast11Essaysshouldbeontopicsfrom“FreeWritingTopics”listonpage4.EssayswillNOTbegradedbasedonaccuracyofgrammar,vocab.,and/oretc,however,adequategrammar,vocab.,andexpressionslevelandorganizationskillsfor300levelKoreanarerequired(atleast1doublespacedpage,useanotebook,donotsubmitbyasheetofapaper.)(10%).

2)Allstudentsarerequiredtowritetwoshortessays.Topicswillbegivenbyinstructor(2doublespacedpages,12pts),(10%).3)Foreachreading,studentsarerequiredtofinishpre-lessonactivity(readaloudassignment)andpost-lessonactivity(comprehensionquestions).Otherassignmentsmygivenbyinstructorandstudentsarerequiredtosubmitthemontime.Latesubmissionwillresultinpartialcredits(5%).Refertopage4forreadaloudassignmentprocedure.

(3) Presentation(5%):Allstudentsarerequiredtogiveanoralpresentation.Additionalinstructionswillbegiveninclass.

(4) FinalProjectandFinalProjectPresentation(15%):Forthefinalproject,studentsshouldchooseonethemerelatedtoKoreaanddesigntheirowntheme-basedtouringroutes.Thefinalprojectpapershouldbe4to5pages(12pts,doublespace)long.StudentsshouldnotrepeatexistingmaterialsfromanyothermediaincludingInternet,T.V.programs,books,magazinesormovies.Ifthepaperdoesnotshowcreativitycomparedtoexistingones,thelowestgradewillbegiventothepaperregardlessofotherstrongpoints.ItwillbedueonTuesday,December20,11:59PM.

ClassPolicy:(1) Laptops,MP3playersandcellularphonesmustbeturnedoffduringclass.Youmaynotleavethe

classroomduringclasswithouttheinstructor’spermission.(2) Youshouldhavedonehomeworkassignmentsbeforeclasstoparticipatefullyintheclassroomactivities.
