INTRODUCTION FROM THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

The Department has moved forward in 2014 despite having had to rise to some quite challenging crises and unfortunate circumstances, and has succeeded to end the year with some very positive and encouraging developments. The Department has worked together with energy and commitment, and this has enabled it to look forward to 2015 with a reinforced enthusiasm for the future.

The exceptionally sad news to report was the sudden and tragic loss of Professor George Gettinby, who passed away in June 2014. This was a tremendous shock to the Department and the Department’s sympathies were passed to George’s wife Ruth, and to all of his family, friends and colleagues. A service was held in New Kilpatrick Church, Bearsden, followed by a reception in the Barony at Strathclyde, an indication of the high esteem and gratitude which the Department and University held for George and his decades of dedicated work.

Dr Chris Coles retired in January and Dr Brian Duffy retired in September. Academics who departed during the year to pursue their careers elsewhere included Dr Natalia Kopteva and Dr Oleg Davydov. Dr Juan Bonachela joined the Department as a Lecturer in July. Dr Thomas Cottrell was appointed as a fixed-term Teaching Associate and Ms Catherine McNab joined us as a Modern Apprentice after the retiral of Mrs Lynne Westwood. Two Chancellor’s Fellows, Dr Neil Banas and Dr Kim Kavanagh, were appointed in December, as were another two new lecturers – Dr Jen Pestana (Numerical Analysis) and Dr Alastair Rushworth (Statistics).

There have been some excellent achievements by the academic staff during 2014, and many of the Department’s highly acclaimed accomplishments by its staff and students are listed on the following pages.

The Department still faces numerous challenges in 2015. Nevertheless, I am confident that it can tackle the challenges ahead and emerge through these demanding times as a much more efficient, stronger and even more successful department.

Professor Iain W Stewart Head of Department

PRIZES, AWARDS AND OTHER DISTINCTIONS

Professor Ernesto Estrada has been elected to be a member of the Academia Europeae.

In addition, Professor Estrada was given the Royal Wolfson Research Merit Award “for respected scientists of outstanding achievement and potential to the UK”, given by the Royal Society in 2013 for the period 2014-2018.

Dr Penny Davies was awarded an OBE for service to Mathematics in the Birthday Honours list.

Dr Peter Davidson was shortlisted for Most Innovative Teacher in the USSA Teaching Excellence Awards

Professor Sean McKee was invited to deliver an “Aula Magna” at the State University of São Paulo in Presidente Prudente in Brazil. While there he was honoured by the award of a “homenagem” by the University and was involved in a book signing by two of his ex-students, Jose (Poti) Cuminato and Messias Menegutte – the preface (apresentação) was written by Professor McKee.

Professor McKee, at the request of the Principal, gave a memorial address at the celebration of the life of Sir Graham Hills in the Barony.

Four Professors were appointed to designated Chairs within the Department

1964 Chair of Mathematics – Professor Ernesto Estrada 1969 Chair of Mathematics for Applied Scientists – Professor Iain Stewart 1969 Chair of Statistics – Professor Xuerong Mao 1984 Chair of Mathematics – Professor Stephen Wilson

Professor Sean McKee with three of his “old” Brazilian PhD students after the award of the “homenagem”: Professors Meneguette, Oishi and Cuminato
