DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

ANNUAL REPORT 2015

“Path graph representation of the first 1,000 digits of the mathematical constant e” by Eusebio Vargas

Each node label is one of the first thousand digits of the mathematical constant “e" (2.71828...), so node 1 corresponds to digit 2, node 2 would be digit 7, node 3 would be 1, and so on... . If you follow the path from node 1 to node 1000 you will have the first thousand digits of this irrational number. The path graph has a random layout.

INTRODUCTION FROM THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

The Department had another successful year in 2015 with some very positive and encouraging developments. There were the largest ever number of undergraduate students taught, continued increases in the level of high quality research, new initiatives in knowledge exchange and another increase in the number of MSc students, and the Department is therefore a major contributor to the University’s aims and objectives. Of course this has only been possible through the activities of our staff, who have invested their time, energy and commitment. They have placed the Department in an extremely positive position (both academically and financially) and with the Faculty and University’s investment in new staff we can look forward to further positive developments that will follow in 2016. The University and Faculty have invested in the Department through a number of strategic appointments. We have welcomed the arrival of two new Chancellor’s Fellows – Dr Kim Kavanagh, previously a postdoctoral researcher in the Department, was appointed as a Chancellor’s Fellow and Lecturer in January 2015 and Dr Neil Banas arrived from the University of Washington in July 2015 as a Chancellor’s Fellow and Senior Lecturer. Two new lecturers, appointed in 2014, also arrived in the Department in 2015 – Dr Jen Pestana from the University of Manchester and Dr Alastair Rushworth from the University of Glasgow. We were also delighted that Dr Peter Davidson and Dr Elizabeth Dombi were moved from fixed-term to open-ended positions as Teaching Associates in 2015, recognising the Department’s continual need for the high-quality teaching provision that they provide. In a new development for the Department, Dr Stephen Corson was appointed to an open-ended position as a Knowledge Exchange Associate in the summer of 2015 and he became the Department’s first Director of Knowledge Exchange, playing the key role in the success of the new Statistical and Mathematical Advice, Research and Training unit (SMART). All of these appointments have significantly strengthened the Department’s overall staffing profile and will allow growth across the spectrum of its activities. We have also seen a number of staff departures during 2015: Dr Thomas Cottrell, who completed his fixed-term position as a Teaching Assistant in June 2015 and has gone on to a position at Bath University as a Teaching Fellow; Ms Catherine McNab left her position as a Modern Apprentice to pursue an alternative career in December 2015; and Dr Wei Yang, left her role as Lecturer in December also to pursue an alternative career. We would like to thank Thomas, Catherine and Wei for their hard work during their time here. All three positions will be replaced during 2016. The report that follows highlights the large number of excellent achievements by the academic staff during 2015. With an ever-changing higher education sector and possible changes in funding levels, the Department still faces numerous challenges in 2016 but I am confident that we can tackle the challenges ahead and emerge as a more efficient, stronger and even more successful department.

PRIZES, AWARDS AND OTHER DISTINCTIONS

An article entitled “Termite mounds can increase the robustness of dryland ecosystems to climatic change”, was featured on the cover of Science, and received considerable media attention (The New York Times, Le Monde, and other printed and online publications). The report by Dr Juan Bonachela was a collaboration involving co-authors, Assistant Professors Corina Tarnita and Robert Pringle, Associate Professor Kelly Caylor, Professor Simon Levin, postdoctoral researcher Efrat Sheffer, and doctoral students Tyler Coverdale and Jennifer Guyton, all from Princeton University.

From University of Strathclyde News http://www.strath.ac.uk/whystrathclyde/termitescanhelpecosystemssurvive/ Termites can help ecosystems survive Innovative research has shown that mounds created by termites are critical to prevent the spread of deserts into semi-arid ecosystems and agricultural lands. A report in the journal Science involving researchers from Princeton University and the University of Strathclyde suggests that termite mounds could make these areas more robust against climate change than previously thought.

According to the study, the presence of termite mounds is beneficial for the ecosystem, providing a refuge for vegetation on and around the mound that helps the ecosystem survive with a level of water that would normally result in desertification. Termite activity increases soil moisture and nutrient accumulation, factors that allow vegetation on the mound and its surroundings to survive under much more severe conditions than without the mounds. Dr Juan Bonachela, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, and first author of the report, said: “We found that, due to the presence of termite mounds, the levels of rainfall for which the ecosystem should collapse into a desert change significantly.” “The enhancement for vegetation growth conditions on and around the mound due to termites allows the rest of the ecosystem to resist much more challenging conditions, and contribute to an earlier regeneration of the ecosystem when conditions are improving.” “We developed a mathematical model that allowed us to explore the change in these desertification thresholds with a level of detail that would be practically impossible to achieve in the field.” Dr Bonachela added: “This is a highly collaborative piece of work, in which we used a really multidisciplinary approach to unveil the positive role of termites." “Biology provided the information to modify a mathematical model in order to include the role of termites, field data and image analysis facilitated a comparison of the model with our own observations, and concepts and techniques from physics allowed us to quantify the improvement on the resilience of the ecosystem due to the mounds.”
