REPORT ON “NATIONAL STATISTICS DAY”

29th June’2019

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics celebrated National Statistics Day on 29th

June’2019. National Statistics Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Prof. Prasanta

Chandra Mahalanobis, a renowned & eminent statistician. He contributed for the statistical

developments to a great extent, & hence Government of India designated his birth anniversary to

be celebrated as National Statistics Day.

The Department conducted various activities for the BSc I, II & III year MSCs students as a part

of celebration. The Celebrations started the Prayer by Head Department of Sciences, Mrs.

M.Kiran Jyothi followed by the Lightening of the Lamp. The Guest Prof V.V. Haragopal, HoD,

Faculty of the department & the student coordinators participated in the lightening of the Lamp.

Mrs.M.Kiran Jyothi, HoD addressed the students on the importance of National Statistics Day,

and highlighted saying that Statistics is the basic foundation for any Policy Formulation for the

Government & its analysis.

The address of the HoD was followed by the introduction of the Guest Prof.V.V.Haragopal by

the Program Coordinator Mr.D.Srinivas Reddy.

GUEST LECTURE: A Guest Lecture by the Guest was organized on “Data Sciences-Sixth

Sense in Real Sense”. The Guest in all the ways possible interacted with the students mentioning

about the importance of Statistics and its significance in the real world. He also extended his

lecture on Artificial Intelligence & Business Intelligence. He concluded saying that Statistics is

the Ingredient and Data Sciences is the Receipe.

VOTE OF THANKS

A Formal Vote of Thanks was proposed by Mrs. S. Vijayalaxmi, Faculty of Department of

Mathematics & Statistics.

POSTER PRESENTATION

The students prepared Posters which reflected the contributions of Prof. Prasanta Chandra

Mahalanobis, Prof. R. A Fisher, George Galton. Karl Pearson and other eminent statistician The

students participated with great enthusiasm in presenting the Posters.

POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

The students enthusiastically participated & showed keen interest in presenting their PPTs with

the fellow students. They used the celebrations Day as Platform to enhance their presenting skills

and communication skills.

QUIZ

The Faculty conducted a Quiz Competition by name “STATA QUIZ” on topics related to

Statistics such as Descriptive Statistics & Probability in two levels which consisted of Multiple

Choice Questions & Word Questions.

Another interesting round was “Who Am I?”, and the last round was to name the Statistician

were conducted with great enthusiasm.

The celebrations ended with the declaration of the Winners for various competitions followed by

the National Anthem.
