Cutting Corners on Cost Leads to a digital divide

Poor quality or cheap equipment in a classroom can lead to breakdowns atcritical times during a lesson.

Students who have broken or cheap equipment do not get as much out of their lessons as students who have working, better quality equimpent

Broken Equipment

Poor quality equipment can lead to students getting distracted or not taking a lesson seriously.

Broken Equipment

Low quality or cheap equipment that breaks also costs the school more money in the long run due to repair costs.

This drives up the digital divide

The Divide can also be caused by teachers

Teachers who are not tech savvy can have frustration with technology. This leads them to be less able to help their students.

The Lack of Knowledge can lead to less than perfect choices by teachers – Adding to the Digital Divide

Teachers who are not tech savvy or who do not have knowledge of the technology used in the workforce may settle for using cheap or easy to use for them technologies in their classrooms… technologies that are not used in the real world.

Teachers need to be students of technology

Teachers need to be open to learning how technology works, and what tech is used in the workplace.

Students who fall on the far side of the digital divide

The students who fall on the far side of the digital divide – they may learn some soft skills, but they will not always have the hard skills and technology experience that employers will want, leading to frustration for them and for employers

My school taught me Google Docs on Chromebooks, but employers want Microsoft Office skills on real computers.

Tech Savvy Teachers Can Close the Digital Divide

Teachers who take the time to learn technology can help teach their students, so they do not fall on the bad side of the digital divide.
