Hello Residents
It’s good to give; whether it’s your time or money or
both as there is always someone less fortunate than us.
I’ve been struck this month by the number of letters
and emails I’ve had from local charities with updates
on their appeals or asking to promote an event in the
magazine free of charge (which I do willingly). So I’ve
dedicated quite a few community pages to these
charitable causes not least my plea for sponsorship to
complete the Great South Run this month in aid of the
Red & White Appeal (I confess, I had a few too many
glasses of wine at a function and won the bid for the
place much to my husband’s amusement). It’s a long
shot but if every household who receives this magazine
(14,000 homes) donates even just £1 on My Virgin
MoneyGiving page that would be £14,000 ! (see pg 4)
As a last follow up to the Olympics I’ve researched
where you can take up on a few of the less promoted
sports (see pg 24). My daughter has joined the college
sailing club on the back of the
exposure sailing got on tv and
our local doctor, who was a Games
Maker for two weeks, has taken up archery with his
daughter so let’s hope all that money and effort spent
on the games leaves a positive legacy after all.
Next issue will be out late November no doubt with a
Christmas theme – cripes!
Cheers
Next issue: December 2012

In 2002, Gill Adkins, 53 found that the glands inher neck were swollen and showing no signs ofgoing down. After a visit to her GP she was testedand found to have leukaemia cells. After manydifficult years of treatment, recurrences andremissions, Gill, in April this year underwent aBone Marrow Transplant in SouthamptonHospital. Living in Christchurch, she will have tomake regular return visits to the hospital, twice aweek for check-ups.
Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create a dedicated daytreatment unit for patients like Gill.
When Gill and husband Ray found out about the Red & White Appeal they were keen to help, havingexperienced first-hand the need for a new treatment area to enhance patient care.
Husband Ray said, “We found out that ward sister Yvonne Loand the team regularly sell home-made cakes and biscuits toraise money for the appeal and decided to make a bid for aparticularly tasty cake.” Reflecting on her treatment so far, Gillsaid, “I will be eternally grateful for the help, encouragementand high level of professional treatment that I’ve received fromall of the team at Southampton. Our donation is just a smalltoken of our appreciation. I just really like home-made cakes!”

Would yousponsor mefor £1?It’s nearly 10 years since I ran 10 miles but Icouldn’t turn down the opportunity to help raisethe remaining £300,000 of SouthamptonHospital’s Red & White Appeal by running theGreat South Run in October.
I publish your Discover Bitterne magazine and if every house that gets a copy donates just £1, I’d raise£14,000! Wouldn’t that be fantastic?
Please help and visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DiscoverSouthampton and make a smalldonation to this worthy cause. Thank you.

THe Hazardous Area Response Team (HART)initiative was born from a need for ambulanceservice paramedics to triage and treat patientswithin particularly hazardous, and/or potentiallycontaminated areas.
Ambulance personnel have not traditionally workedin the inner cordon (hot zone) of a hazardous incidentbut have waited for Fire & Rescue crews to bringcasualties out of the inner cordon. However, it wasrecognised that delays in providing immediatetreatment to casualties within the inner cordon couldresult in unnecessary loss of life.
The HART project, funded by the Department ofHealth, was initiated in 2005 to provide the ambulanceservice with the capability to work within the innercordon at CBRNe (Chemical Biological RadiologicalNuclear Explosive) or HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials)incidents and other appropriate major incidents.
HART forms part of the health response in support ofthe national capabilities programme being led by theHome Office. This programme aims to ensure thatfewer lives would be risked or lost in the event of aterrorist CBRN incident or an accidental release ofhazardous materials.
South Central Ambulance Service NHS FoundationTrust (SCAS) HART provides one of the 15 teamsacross England and consists of 7 teams of 6paramedics on each team.
SCAS HART members are specially recruitedparamedics who have been trained to provide life-saving emergency medical care in hostile and difficult

environments such as industrial accidents, natural disasters or other complex incidentssuch as train crashes, large-scale motorwayaccidents, building collapses, significant firesor flooding. These scenarios could be the resultof an accident, environment or could havebeen caused deliberately. The team also has arole in looking after other emergency servicepersonnel who may become injured whilstattending incidents.
Throughout the year, SCAS HART hasattended many varied incidences and providessupport for fire crews at multiple pump fires, strengthens multi-agency relationships andclinical support to operational staff if required.Recent jobs attended by SCAS HART teamsinclude a fire at Winchester Hospital, a fire at aBasingstoke warehouse, a variety of RoadTraffic Collisions and a dock rescue.
Above is one of the SCAS HART teams out ona training session in Bitterne Park practicingtethered swim rescue techniques. HART teamstrain every 7th week to maintain currentclinical and technical rescue skills. This is anopportunity to keep on top of initial trainingand to forge new relationships with otherEmergency Services Partners such asHampshire Fire and Rescue and their USARteam, Military Dockyard Fire and Rescueteams, Hampshire Police, MOD Police,Coastguard and the Force Support Unit.

DISCOVER HISTORy
OTTeRBOuRne resident Duncan Holley, hasbeen collecting memorabilia and photos ofSouthampton FC for 40 odd years. This has beendone by going to post-card fairs, internet, agencies etc - all the usual places - but alsospending many hours driving around thecountry visiting old players and their families tobeg, steal or borrow their photographs or takephotos of their medals and caps.
The club gave him official historian status in 1998which was a great help when resourcing thesephotos and the club's history but still, sometimeshe had to pay up to £300 to acquire an image. Asthe club's post war history had already beencomprehensively covered by Duncan’s previousbook "In that Number" in 2003, he thought it wastime to do something for the pre-war period andso he has released “Suited and Booted”. Because thehistory was comparatively ancient (no one alivewho remembers it) he had to include a pottedabridged script to accompany the photos, but herealised it would be the photos that would make thebook attractive as you can see above.
Most of us are fascinated to see images from somany years ago whether football related or not.Every single man in the crowd (it would be easierto find the eponymous character in Where’s Wally, than to spot a woman in this crowd) is wearing awhite shirt, a tie, a jacket and a hat. Many aresmoking cigarettes or pipes. And it’s unlikely thatany of them are still alive today.
But of course it’s the history of the club itself that
makes this beautifully illustrated and designedbook a must-have for Southampton supporters, especially with the team’s higher profile now theyhave returned to the Premier League.

A leading Hampshirehearing centre has joined ascheme run in conjunctionwith Help for Heroes tooffer free, state-of-the arthearing instruments toveteran British Servicemenand women who have been discharged from thearmy due to damaged hearing in recent conflicts.
The Hampshire Hearing Centre, which is part ofthe Association of Independent Hearing Health-care Professionals (AIHHP), has teamed up with thecharity and Phonak, the world’s leading manu-facturer of hearing instruments, to help those whohave suffered a hearing impairment in Britain’scurrent conflicts and have been discharged as aresult. Former troops who have served in recentconflicts and fit the above criteria will be eligible tobenefit from this scheme.
As well as a choice of cutting edge hearinginstruments, eligible veteran Servicemen andwomen will be given freeinstrument fitting anda series of follow up appointments from membersof AIHHP.
The 9,500 British troops currentlystationed in Afghanistan areregularly exposed to the blast ofguns or ‘medium’ explosionsmeasuring 140 decibels (dB) – farexceeding the noise level of 85 dBat which hearing damage can
occur. As a result of this noise exposure, troops areat a high risk of suffering severe and evenpermanent hearing damage.
Head of Welfare at Help for Heroes, Kathy KnellMBE said: “The new partnership with Phonak andAIHHP is a very positive step which will help a lotof returning troops. Addressing hearing loss givespeople the ability and confidence to hear clearlyand improve their overall quality of life.”
Mr Gary Whettingsteel from the HampshireHearing Centre in Chandlers Ford said: “It is aprivilege to have this opportunity to make apositive impact on the lives of our brave Servicemen and women and we welcome them to ourcentre.”

IT may seem old fashioned but sexism in theworkplace is still an issue that needs to be addressed.Acts of sexism are liable to be punished under theequality Act 2010, legislation put in place to clampdown on any form of sexist discrimination inworkplace.
The most common form of sexism in the workplace iswhereby a member of one sex is treated less favourablythan a member of the other sex simply due to theirgender; this is known as direct discrimination. Indirectdiscrimination occurs where a rule or criterion in aworkplace puts a particular gender at a disadvantage.
Peninsula Business Services state that sexual harassmentis the most frequently occurring type of sexistdiscrimination, with many people not realising thepossible consequences to what they think of as a joke.Said consequences can take the form of a sexdiscrimination claim thus Peninsula Business Servicesstate that it is essential to create a workplace in which itis clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated and thatany abuse of anti-discrimination policy will beconsistently punished.
The procedure for reporting harassment is set out byPeninsula whereby an employee should raise a
grievance which would need to bedealt with under an organisationsgrievance procedure or personalharassment procedure where there isone.
It is important to note that where asex discrimination claim is made to atribunal, there is no upper cap on theamount of compensation that can beawarded for a successful claim. Underthe vicarious liability provisions, where an employer cannot showthat it took measures to ensurediscrimination does not occur intheir workplace, the employer willalso be held responsible for compen-
sation for discrimination in respect of a matter of whichhe had no control or knowledge.
