rolls that the community had donated over the last few months. Hopefully

many of the wattle trees will grow across the district.

LOCKINGTON SENIOR CITIZENS 46TH BIRTHDAY - MAY 6, 2016.

64 people from various clubs attended our birthday party and a great time was enjoyed by all. Ken and Trish Kendall entertained us during the afternoon with Ken singing and Trish providing some dancing amusements. Lucky door tickets were drawn by Ken, also the raffles being meat plat-

ter, fern, and vegetable and fruit basket. Annie Fiedler, our oldest member cut the cake with Dot Pearse, and wished Lockington Senior Citizens a very happy birthday. Madge Cunnington and Beryl Marshall entertained us with a couple of

skits which were very amusing and well done by the two. Congratulations Madge and Beryl, you’ve both got what it takes! Ken and Trish were thanked for their good work. Also the caterers – Milloo CWA who did an excellent job with the presentation and serving of the food.

NB. Please remember Indoor bowls are still be-ing played at 1.00pm Monday afternoons at the Community Centre.

Mavis Mary Power

Born 22 November, 1919 deceased 1 May, 2016

Mavis, daughter of James Hall & Elizabeth Bernasocchi, was born on 22 November 1919 in a gig somewhere between Wedderburn & her grandmother’s farm at Woosang (remember that name for later). She weighed 2 pound. A local midwife tended to the premature baby and wrapped Mavis in cotton wool to keep her warm – no humidicribs and no hospital for newborns in those days. Her father would put her in his coat pocket to show his mates how small she was!!

Mavis was the eldest of three children. She had a brother Mervyn and a sister, Elsie. They were a close family and remained so. When she was 4 years old, Mavis started school. The teacher decided that she may as well as she was always ‘hanging around’ the school.

With her brother especially, and her little sister if Elsie, there was plenty of fun to be had in Wedderburn, such as playing football with the boys, riding her bike miles to watch the local footy matches, pinching fruit from the trees in the neighbourhood and visiting her Auntie Nell & Uncle Foster White on the farm where she learned to play tennis & ride horses. She was also good at leading her brother astray such as the time that they climbed onto the Church of Christ roof and couldn’t get down again. Their father had to get a ladder to rescue them, then made sure that they didn’t do that again.

When Mavis was aged about 15 or 16 she moved to Melbourne to find work living with an aunt until her parents and siblings also moved to the city. Work then, as is the case now, was scarce in the country. Mavis found work in Flinders Street working as a machinist in a clothing factory. She left there to join the Women’s

Auxiliary Australian Air Force and do her part to assist with the war effort. In both the factory and the WAAAF, Mavis made many lifetime friends.

In March 1943, Mavis married Jim Power. Jim had joined the army when World War 11 broke out. They had known one another since Mavis’ holidays on her aunt and un-cle’s farm. Rumour has it that when Jim was on leave in Melbourne he would wait outside the dances for Mavis then take her home on the back of his motorbike. He had an aversion to dancing! For her wedding Mavis was given coupons by friends in order to buy her wedding dress and a cousin lent her a veil. The dress went on to be used by many other brides. In July 1944, Mavis was discharged from the WAAAF on compassionate grounds, she was pregnant, and their first daughter, Maree, was born in Melbourne the following year.

When Jim was discharged from the army, the family moved to Bamawm to work for her Auntie Nell & Uncle Foster White who had moved from Nine Mile via Bendigo to farm at Bamawm. In 1947, Mavis & Jim acquired part of the White’s Bamawm property under the Soldier Settlement Scheme. They named their farm Sunny-banks” and it was here that they settled into raising their family, farming, and becoming part of the local commu-nity. The family grew with the birth of Lynette, and Robert a few years later.

Mavis assisted Jim with the farm raising sheep and growing tomatoes, then later beef cattle. They became involved in the local community through joining the Bamawm Presbyterian Church. Both Mavis and Jim enjoyed playing sport and joined the Bamawm tennis club. In winter, Mavis played basketball and golf. To Mavis, bowls was an ‘old ladies game’ however, once she became a member of the Lockington Bowls Club she, like Jim, took to it like a duck to water, so to speak.

Familiar names for us Clymo’s, Haines, Beeson’s, McMinn’s, Butcher’s, Brown’s, the list could go on. Long will we remember the footy concerts in the Bamawm Hall. How can I forget Mavis practising the jitterbug for a dance troupe?

KNIT FOR NEPAL

Goal: 1km length of squares (4,500) Squares should be 20 x 20 cm, roughly 44 stitches in a row, size 4mm needles (old size 8), 8 ply wool (acrylic)

We are raising awareness through Knit for Nepal, a project designed to give support to the people of Nepal, many of whom are still homeless since the earthquake in April 2015. Please knit or crochet 20 x 20cm squares to be joined into blankets. We’ll work with Scouts, Rotary and Soroptimists to distribute the blankets to those in need in Nepal.

Please keep knitting until end September 2016, we are hoping to achieve a kilometre of squares (if they are laid end to end), which adds up to a rough total of 4,500 squares.

As the children grew older, Mavis became involved in the

school Mothers’ Club, joined the Red Cross and CWA,

and became a Girl Guide leader. Her nature was to be out

and about serving the local community. If someone was ill

or needed assistance in some way Mavis was always

willing to lend a hand. She was a good friend to those in

need.

Her immediate and wider family was important to Mavis, this included visiting her parents in Melbourne until they moved to the farm in 1958. They also travelled to Wedderburn, Bendigo, Charlton and Mildura to visit Jim’s siblings and family. While I think of it, Niece Kath wasn’t terribly impressed when holidaying on the farm that Auntie Mavis made her eat dirty bread! The dirty bread was brown bread!

The farm often hosted visitors and Christmas time was no exception. Mavis would be up early on the day to get the turkey started; the pudding was made about six months prior and hung on the back verandah to be ready for eating on Christmas day. Many the times there would be 20 or more for Christmas lunch and strays (human or canine) were always welcome.

In 1982, Mavis & Jim moved to Echuca where they both joined the Echuca Bowls Club. Mavis continued her association with the church becoming a member of Echuca Uniting Church and Guild. Mavis also joined what was then called the Blind Auxiliary and thus became aware of Guide Dogs Australia.

Community service continued to be a focus for Mavis and she joined a small group of women who formed the Kanyana Auxiliary which supported members of the community with disability raising in excess of $100k over time through fashion parades, garden parties, luncheons etc.

1984 Mavis and Jim packed their bags for a trip to Europe. Whilst Jim had no trouble getting a passport, Mavis did! Her application for a passport was rejected. For place of birth she had submitted ‘Woosang’ and country of birth as Australia. The passport officer had different ideas. He decided that Mavis must have been born in China given ‘Woosang’ as the place of birth. It all worked out happily in the end. They travelled extensively in Australia and New Zealand on bus trips, and many car trips to Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour became favourite destinations in winter. Of course, the bowls bags went too!

In early 1990, a bundle of joy in the shape of an eight week old Labradoodle puppy named Drew came to live with Mavis and Jim for twelve months. In that twelve months Drew needed to learn lots. Apart from the usual of being house trained, walking on a lead, obeying basic

commands, he also had to learn to climb steps, go to church, get used to riding in cars, not being phased by all manner of things like automatic opening doors etc. Drew was a Guide Dog in training, he had a wonderful sense of humour and caused lots of merriment. Of course Drew went to bowls too! He went on to become a Guide Dog and live in Canberra. Why wouldn’t he? Mavis often gave him the pep talk that he was going to pass with flying colours!

Then along came Pippa, a Labrador and ex Guide Dog who needed a home. She struck gold with Mavis. A short time later another Labradoodle pup joined the household. Once again, Dalton needed to learn about all aspects of living life with humans, and went on to become a pets-as-therapy dog making life easier for a young lad in Ade-laide. Mavis became a familiar sight for Echuca residents as she walked the dogs.

In 1999, Jim passed away at the age of 85 and so ended a loving relationship of 55 years. Two weeks later Pippa also passed away and life was quiet. Life slowed down a little when she had a pacemaker fitted & later on open heart surgery. For the first time in decades there was no dog.

And then in the year 2000 along came Gyp; a dog who needed a home. He, too, struck gold and so Mavis too with him. They became great mates. He was her confidant, lap warmer, exerciser, guard dog and much more. He was an enormous help to Maree as Mavis’ health slowly deteriorated. He would get Mavis out of bed of a morning by barking at her and then stay in the bathroom with her whilst Mavis showered. Gyp passed away one week after Mavis went into care. His job was done.

Now to the grandchildren: Mavis and Jim were thrilled

when Robert and Heather married, and even more so

when their first child, Nicholas, was born in 1990. Robert

and Heather were living in New Zealand at the time. In

1992, Mavis and Jim went to New Zealand for the birth of

Matthew, grandson no. 2. In 1994, when Robert &

Heather returned to Melbourne to live, Nicholas &

Matthew began their regular visits to Echuca to stay with

Nanna & Pa. In 1997 twins, Sarah and Rachel, were born

to Robert and Heather. Mavis had a wonderful time being

Nanna to the four children.

Mavis’ health deteriorated to such an extent that in September 2014 she became a resident at Glanville. We cannot speak highly enough of the love, care and attention given to Mavis by the staff and volunteers at Glanville. Their sense of humour & patience amazing; their willingness to kid, cajole, support, encourage amazing; and, their ability to find lost dogs also amazing. We thank them sincerely. Mavis died peacefully on Sunday the first of May.

Mavis loved life. It was to be enjoyed. She will be remembered for her happy disposition, her sense of humour, her willingness to be of service and for the many ways in which she made a difference. For us, we will remember the importance of family and friends. Mavis may you rest in peace. Thank you to Mavis’ family for sharing these memories.

Congratulations We would like to congratulate our 2 graduate teachers Casey Wilson and Steph Watson for recently graduating from University. Casey studied at La Trobe University in Bendigo who held their graduation ceremonies last week. Steph studied at Federation University Ballarat and will attend her graduation ceremony this coming Tuesday. Both are assets to our school. Echuca Cross Country Last week some of our 4-6 students travelled to Echuca to compete in the Echuca Cross Country at Vic Park.

The students should be very proud of their efforts and achievements, well done to you all. Congratula-tions to Edward Brentnall who crossed the line in first place in his event and Bowden Stone who fin-ished seventh in his. Both boys have qualified to compete at the Regional Cross Country event in St Arnaud later this month. Thank you to Leanne Pentreath for driv-ing the students to the event and to those who came to cheer us on.

Landcare Visit We would like to thank Wendy Sims and Drew Gailey from Lockington Landcare who came along to school on Friday and worked with our grade 3/ 4 classes. They explained how they collect seeds from native plants and pre-pare them for planting and then allowed the students to plant their own seeds to take home and plant at home. It was a great opportunity for our grade 3/ 4 students as they have been learning all about plants and plant lifecycles as part of their Science Unit this Semester. Thanks again to Wendy and Drew.

NAPLAN Our grade 3 and 5 students have finished sitting NAPLAN for 2016. They all did their very best and we look forward to receiving their results around September. Soccer On Friday the 13th of May our grade 5 and 6 students travelled to Moama to compete in a soccer tournament against other local primary schools. The students had a great time and participated well. Both teams displayed excellent team work and should be very proud of their efforts. Thanks to Mr Gray and Dan Portwine who went along and coached the teams on the day.

YAGERS TRIP TO THE AFL

Saturday 30th April, saw 33 YAGers and 5 parental helpers head off to the AFL to see Richmond Vs Port Adelaide at the MCG. Rob West, John Steele, Sally McMahon, Trav Mancer and Kris Munro were game enough to take 2 mini buses down to Melbourne, for the YAGers to enjoy at night at the footy. Although the game was not the highest of standards, it was still great to be able to take such a great group of well behaved people away. To the parent helpers – we could not run these events without you, so THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Next YAGers event is The Zone in Bendigo, Friday 6th May, as part of (an extended) Youth Week project. Would you like to come along? Or perhaps you might like to help? We are always look-ing for new members and parental help-ers!! Meetings are generally most Wednesday afternoons, at the Locking-ton District Business Centre at 4.15*.. Come along and have some fun.

SAVE LOCKY POOL -TIME TO GET WRITING!

We all have a chance now to write to the Campaspe Shire and have a say on what you think about the three options listed in the Aquatic Services Review Discussion Paper. It would be great to get as many letters into council as possi-ble, showing that Lockington and District cannot lose another asset. Things to think about are how closing would affect yourself or the community? Would you have the extra time or money to drive even more into the larger towns to swim? Will there be further strain on the community? Is the risk of someone drowning acceptable? Will there be a flow on cost to busi-nesses in town, if people are in the larger towns more often?

Many questions, and some may apply to yourself, some may not. So, how do we do it? There are many ways, from dot points, using pictures or photos, a letter telling your story, persua-sive arguments that outline the social implications, just to name a few. Whatever you feel about the possible closure and demolishment of the pool, it is a good start. And it can be as long or short as you like!

CWA - ‘FOREVER’ TIMELESS MEMORIES Nine members of the Bamawm CWA Branch enjoyed a delightful day out in April when they visited the ‘Forever’ Timeless Memories of Bridal Gowns exhibition held at the Town Hall in Kyabram. The display included an amazing collec-tion of wedding dresses and accessories from 1880 - 2015 and is an exhibition well worth visiting. The exhibition is on display until June 13th.

We completed our outing by having lunch in Kyabram and finishing with our usual meeting. A great day out.

SLOW DOWN—BEWARE PEDESTRIANS With many activities happening simultaneously at the Centre it is of paramount importance that vehicles and pedestrians take care when entering, attending and leaving the Centre. Small children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable as their mobility, senses and reflexes can be less responsive due to impairment or distraction. Traffic should drive at

no more than walking pace on the grounds, for the safety of all Centre patrons. Particularly busy days are: • Tuesday - Doctor • Thursday - Doctor, PAG & Immunisations • Friday - Infant Welfare Centre Please be alert and check carefully for other traffic reversing from parking spaces, mobility scooters and pedestrians entering and leaving the Centre. Visibility can be reduced when coming from the west side of the building, so reduced speed and focus is of the utmost importance. We also have a rear exit to Roberts Street that can be used be used when leaving the Centre to help traffic flow and help alleviate any traffic congestion. We would welcome any community suggestions - eg signage, one way traffic by erecting barrier on western access and traffic to leave via rear

Terry Thomas and Rick Connors combined brilliantly to score 49 points (highlighted by 28 points on the inward 9) and win the men’s event. Sherryl Jones and Annette Brereton won the ladies’ event with 37, ahead of Lois Chugg and Phyl Macfarlane (33). Next Sunday 22nd will be a stroke round with Anita Ward and Louise Williams on duty.

BOWLS CLUB NEWS

The club held its annual Presentation evening on Friday. A large crowd of members and guests attended and were

treated to delightful meal and sweets. Club Presidents Phillip Cunnington and Joy Weller welcomed everyone and thanked all members for their contribution to the club during the past season. Weller then proceeded to present the awards with assis-tance from Pauline Humbert. Club champion: Rhonda Gallagher Runner Up: Leanne McInnes. 100 Up cham-pion: Rhonda Gallagher. R/Up: Lois Chugg. Gallagher in her acceptance speech thanked the Lockington Bowls Club for all the assistance and support during the past twenty years in her bowling career. Gallagher on a sadder note advised the members that she was transferring to the City of Echuca Bowls Club. Rhonda Gallagher has been a stalwart for the club over this period and the ten times club champion will be re-membered for her contribution and wish her well for the future. (A special presentation was made to Pauline Humbert in recognition for her several years as Treasurer of the ladies committee. Members applauded the work and effort from Pauline.) The vouchers for the season were presented to all recipi-ents with Annette Brereton, Anne Lowrie and Joy Weller featuring on a regular basis. Lady President Joy Weller presented the club Treasurer Alan Kauffman with a cheque to the amount of $6000 as proceeds of the fund-raising during the year. Kauffman was rather chuffed that it only took him 82 years to get this close to championship status. B Grade champion: Kalvin Stout. R/Up: Les Brereton. 100 Up champion: Don Isgro. R/Up: Graeme Turner. 21 Up Presi-dents trophy: Tom Davis. R/Up:Neil Haines. Davis gave a long detailed speech in which he stated that it was a real honour to win the award and congratulated Haines on a truly high standard game played and it was a shame that there could be only one winner. A special highlight of the evening was the presentation of a Best Clubman award to Les Brereton. Brereton was recog-nised for his contribution given to the club over several years. In closing Cunnington and Weller thanked all present and trusted that the club will remain viable for many years to come. Last Tuesday the women played their final weekly social bowls. With a small field the game was Scrounge. After a slow start Pauline Humbert was able to minimise her mis-takes to win the event. Joy Weller won the Pentreaths Foodworks voucher. The game of Scrounge will be played on Wednesday 11th May starting at 1.00pm. All bowlers and non-bowlers wel-come to participate. Flat soled shoes to be worn or bare-foot. Weather permitting this will be a weekly event during the coming months. Names to be listed prior to 12.45pm. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 16th May commencing at 8.00pm.

PINEGROVE MAY SHOOT RESULTS Sunday 1st of May saw Pinegrove Gun Club hold a 100 target sim graded ladies ,veterans & Juniors on handicap) Field & Game shoot, which saw 93 brave the windy con-ditions to contest Pinegrove’s fist 100 target shoot set over two grounds. Course setters “Dobbie” & ‘Bugs Shorland” had their work cut out adjusting targets with the strong blustery winds blowing from the South West all day, but still managed to set good hittable birds & still testing all skill levels of shooters. With Kerri in the nomination hut getting the squads out at good intervals over the two grounds, the day was set for an early finish & with Drew & Michelle in the canteen pumping out the tea & coffee plus warm food, which was appreciated by all in the very cool conditions. First rounds saw better than anticipated scores coming in, with shooters adjusting to the windy conditions. With halve the squads shooting A ground and the other halve shooting B ground first, it was impossible to gauge which was the harder ground or more wind affected.

Second round saw some shooters adjust better to the conditions and improve on their scores, which was the story as the day went on, Nicholas Guerra shoot a possi-ble 25 out of 25 on his last round and take out High gun with a very impressive 90 out of 100 in very trying condi-tions.

AA grade saw shoot off between Grant Stanford & Greg Morey with both locked on 84. Shoot off saw Grant the victor with his new fancy high rib side by side which might start a new trend?

A grade winner was Greg Allan 85 over Greg Passolague two behind on 82, B grade saw Pinegrove’s own Christo-pher Shorland drop only one target on the first station in his last round to have a 24 to take the chocolates from Bryan Watson 82 to 76.

C grade winner was Stefano Papaluca 68 to Echuca/ Moama member Clayton Townrow on 64, Veterans Trevor Carr 83 to second place Brian Hoyland 69 on handicap.

Ladies Saw Echuca/Moama Member April Thompson on 77 first with Pinegrove’s Chloe Shorland second on 75.Juniors winner was Jorden Roberts on 70 with another Pinegrove member Corey West second with 68.

Sub juniors winners saw two fast improving young shoot-ers & I’m sure it won’t be long until they are challenging their fathers for bragging rights with Harper Molluso with 85 first and Lachlan Moran on 79 in second place.

Next Pinegrove shoot will be on Sunday 12/6/2016 which will be the second day of Golden Rivers three day shoot, over the June long weekend. Continued next page.
