DARTMOUTH IS ASPECIAL PLACE

One of the great qualities of Dartmouth is its success in protecting the

environment, making it a wonderful place to live with forests, open fields,

flowing streams and coastal estuaries. These special places nourish wildlife,

help maintain clean air and water and sustain working farms.

PROTECTED LANDS

OF DARTMOUTH ARE

A TOWN TREASURE.

WE HAVE HELPED PROTECT MORE THAN

5,000 ACRES For the past four decades Dartmouth Natural Resources

Trust (DNRT) has been a leader in preserving and protecting our town’s natural resources. More than 5,000 acres have

been protected from development and 35 miles of trails have been created for walking, exploring, bird watching

and experiencing historic sites. Thousands of citizens of all ages take advantage of these outdoor treasures, enraptured

by fields of daffodils, fascinated by vernal ponds, and stirred by the peacefulness of the saltmarsh.

PATHWAY TO

PRESERVATION

Protecting land isn’t enough. Stewardship is a permanent, year-round commitment undertaken by our staff and volunteers. DNRT will continue to provide and improve public access to natural areas by creating and maintaining trails, parking areas and boardwalks. We will work to upgrade the health of our ecosystems by removing invasive species and restoring degraded wildlife habitats.

PATHWAY TO

PROTECTION

DNRT has identified over 1,000 acres of important land in Dartmouth still needing protection. DNRT will focus on acquiring parcels next to waterways and existing protected land. We will also continue to seek conservation restrictions on natural lands and facilitate agricultural restrictions on farmland.

The DNRT Center at Helfand Farm will serve as a permanent home for DNRT where we can continue to preserve and protect our natural resources and connect people to these resources.

The new DNRT Center includes the restoration and preservation of the 1835 Helfand farmhouse. Connected to the back of the farmhouse, a new energy efficient addition will provide needed working space and a large multi-purpose community meeting room. The restoration and additions have been unanimously endorsed by both the Dartmouth Historical Commission and the Dartmouth Community Preservation Committee.

The DNRT Center will offer significant benefits, both to DNRT and the local community:

• A land management barn for vehicles and equipment

• Efficient work and meeting space for volunteers and DNRT staff

• A large multi-purpose meeting room and patio for community events

• Accessibility for those with disabilities

• A restored and preserved historic farmhouse

• Efficient heating, cooling and mechanical systems

• Photovoltaic solar panels
