Welcome to the June issue of Dockyard, the magazine for the commercial marine and renewable markets.

Aberdeen Harbour buoyant as 2014 delivers continued growth Aberdeen Harbour has recorded a total gross vessel tonnage figure in excess of 28 million tonnes for the third year in succession and an increase in vessel arrival numbers.

In announcing their results for 2014, Aberdeen Harbour Board confirmed a total gross vessel tonnage figure of 28.1 million tonnes, the equivalent of almost 80,000 tonnes of shipping per day entering the port. The harbour also witnessed a 1.3 per cent increase in the total number of vessel arrivals, increasing from 7,834 in 2013 to 7,937 in 2014.

All this activity has contributed to a turnover figure of £28.9million, up from £27.6million, and a pre-tax profit of £12.4million, an increase of 29 per cent from £9.6million in 2013.

The port also continues to experience year-on-year growth in international trade, with 2014 activity increasing by 12% on the previous year and the number of countries with which the harbour directly trades increasing to 41 in 2014. Among the new routes, the Falkland Islands alone saw more than 40,000 vessel tonnes and 10,000 tonnes of predominantly oil and gas-related cargo.

Aberdeen Harbour chief executive Colin Parker, said: “Activity at the port remained strong throughout 2014 and, in particular, we are pleased to see the development of further international links and the continued strength of both our UKCS-related and commercial cargo markets.

“Activity to date in 2015 also remains buoyant. Quarter one activity for 2015 is four per cent ahead of the same period last year, in terms of vessel arrivals, and five per cent up in terms of shipping tonnage. It remains to be seen whether further increases in these figures are possible, given the demand for available capacity within the port, and vessel tonnage figures may well continue to plateau due to our inability to accommodate any further increases in volume or vessel size for this reason.

As such, we remain committed to investigating expansion opportunities in Nigg Bay. In order to develop the plans, the Board continues with a major consultation programme with its key stakeholders, to assess all possible opportunities that the development of additional facilities may have.”

Simultaneously, technical, economic and environmental assessments are being finalised. Subject to all necessary consents and Board approval, Aberdeen Harbour could be inviting tenders during 2016 and construction could commence in early 2017 with a view to full completion by 2020 – 21.

“One of the real positives about being a Trust Port,” continued Colin, “ is our ability to focus on the long term, so although fluctuations in the oil price can have an effect on our short term activity, the need to expand and to create the appropriate, modern, deep-water facilities required to capture and retain new markets in the long term remains an imperative. Aberdeen Harbour has to continue its evolutionary journey to ensure that it stays technically relevant and able to accommodate ever larger

commercial and subsea vessels, to play a key role in new markets such as the burgeoning cruise industry, and to capture a share of the immense volume of activity that will be stimulated by decommissioning.”

In line with this, 2014 was one of the busiest years for Aberdeen Harbour for scrap imports and exports, with a 26 per cent increase in shipments from 126,204 tonnes to 160,039 tonnes. Other business streams also remained strong, with the government-funded Serco Northlink passenger and freight services to Orkney and Shetland continuing to thrive, and dry bulk activity showing a significant increase. In particular, exports of bulk barley were up by 288 per cent from 21,311 tonnes to 82,761 tonnes.

High activity in this sector has continued into 2015 and, earlier this month, the largest single export of grain left Aberdeen Harbour, bound for Libya on the MV Selamet. The 16,500 tonne cargo, managed by Openfield, the largest farmer-owned grain co-operative in the UK, will be used as animal feed. The port’s previous record was set back in 1991, at 12,500 tonnes.

Speaking at the 2015 OSJ Annual Conference, Awards & exhibition in London in February, Petter Dyring, head of subsea at RS Platou’s Oslo office, described some of the key trends in the subsea sector, and looked in detail at expenditure and vessel demand, charter trends, and challenges and opportunities in the sector. As Mr Dyring noted, the industry has gone from “oil drought to flood” in around six years and, at the current time, the oil majors are experiencing a “cash squeeze.” Added to this, the steep fall in the oil price in the last 12 months means that there has been a significant drop in spending on exploration and production (E&P).

“Shale oil has become a problem for offshore oil – and could create a new ceiling for the oil price,” he told delegates.

Simrad has launched its new Simrad E5024 ECDIS system, an IMO type approved navigation device aimed at the commercial shipping markets. The Simrad E5024 ECDIS system is an IMO type-approved navigation system, designed for use aboard SOLAS vessels including large passenger ships, tankers, and cargo ships subject to the ECDIS Carriage Mandate. It is suitable for vessels required to retrofit ECDIS to meet amended SOLAS requirements, the modular E5024 ECDIS system offers simple installation in either single-station or dual-station(PLECDIS) configurations.

Following the vote in the European Parliament, adopting a regional EU Regulation on the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of individual ship emissions of CO2, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), BIMCO and Intercargo have issued the following statement: The vote was expected, being based on the political agreement reached between the EU institutions at the end of last year. However, the shipping industry is still disappointed by the Parliament’s confirmation of the EU decision to pre-empt the current International Maritime Organization (IMO) negotiations on a global data collection system on shipping’s CO2 emissions by adopting a unilateral, regional Regulation on the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of individual ship emissions, which will also apply to non-EU flag ships trading to Europe, in advance of IMO completing its work. Until now, with the industry’s support, the IMO negotiations have been progressing well. But there is a danger that the EU initiative will be seen by non-EU nations as an attempt to present them with a fait accompli. It will be vital for EU Member States to explain how the new EU Regulation can be implemented in a way which is fully compatible with whatever might be agreed by IMO for global application, in the interests of avoiding the unhelpful complication of a separate regional regime. The shipping industry associations reiterate that the latest IMO Green House Gas Study, published in 2014, found that international shipping had reduced its total CO2 emissions by more than 10% between 2007 and 2012, despite an increase in maritime trade.

BIMCO has stated today that it appreciates the new efforts by EU leaders to reduce increasing reliance on merchant shipping to rescue the growing numbers of distressed migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.

BIMCO welcomed the announcement last April, that the funding of Operation Triton will be increased to match that previously allocated to Operation Mare Nostrum. It also welcomed the contribution of extra ships, planes and helicopters that many countries will make to assist with the search and rescue capabilities of the region.

Lars Robert Pedersen, Deputy Secretary General at BIMCO, said: “The shipping industry has recently highlighted the risks to the health, safety and security of seafarers who assist distressed migrants in increasingly large numbers. Merchant ships are ill-equipped to deal with large-scale rescue operations involving many hundreds of migrants and it may compromise the safety of those onboard as well as those who they attempt to rescue. The long term problem of huge migratory flow in the Mediterranean has led to a humanitarian crisis at sea that merchant shipping is not equipped to handle. Migration is an issue for nations to resolve.The industry had called for an expansion of the geographical scope of Operation Triton to include areas where migrants are most likely to be found before they get into serious difficulty. This does not yet seem to have been addressed. We realise that the issue of migration will not be resolved by these step changes alone. This is why BIMCO will continue to give practical advice to Shipmasters on how to effectively deal with calls for search and rescue assistance.”

Significant experience Originally founded with a focus on specialist subsea vessel design and shipyard supervision, MAATS Tech has since developed its services over the last 25 years to become a marine engineering organisation with a major presence in the offshore engineering industry. Today a key supplier to all blue chip offshore contractors, such as Subsea 7, Technip, Aker, J Ray McDermott and SBM, the group has also developed strong relationships with a range of world-class shipyards; these include IHC in the Netherlands, Bergen, Kleven and Vard in Norway and HHI and DSME in South Korea.

An expert in turnkey, ship-based carousel systems, MAATS Tech acts as a main contractor throughout the design, build and installation process for both on-deck and under-deck carousels as well as any other loading and unloading equipment. Having supplied approximately 35 carousels in various sizes to around 25 different vessels, the company has developed significant experience in carousel systems, resulting in a world leader status in the supply of carousels that are installed below deck.

Since it was previously featured in Shipping and Marine magazine in June 2014, the company continued to enjoy a record-breaking year, while also expanding its services into the new cable lay market, as John Holt, managing director at MAATS Tech, begins: “The most notable development for MAATS Tech since we last spoke has been our strategic change in direction from pipe lay vessel requirements to cable lay vessels; this has come as a result of a shift of emphasis in shipbuilding to the new cable lay business in support of cabling to offshore platforms, wind farms and, in some cases, power from one island to another when DC power is used instead of AC.

Bourbon’s kidnapped crew freed The three crew members of Nigerian nationality who had been kidnapped off the coast of Nigeria in April have been released, French vessel operator Bourbon confirmed.

The company’s crew boat, the Surfer 1440, was boarded off the Nigerian coast in the night of the 8th of April 2015.

“They are in good health and arrived at Port Harcourt on May 8, 2015. This news comes as a great relief to all Bourbon employees as a whole, who share the joy of the families,” the company said in a statement recently.

Bourbon’s Surfers are speedboats used to transport personnel and light parcels to and from offshore oil and gas sites. The company has around 250 surfers in its fleet.

ACO Marine, a leading supplier of wastewater treatment technology to the maritime industry, has received Bureau Veritas type approval for its new ACO Maripur NF® sewage treatment system.

The BV tests confirm that ACO Marine’s next generation treatment plant meets the stringent performance requirements of IMO Resolution MEPC 227(64), which enters into force in January 2016.

Mark Beavis, ACO Marine’s managing director, said: “This is an important step forward in the continuing development of the Maripur product range.

It confirms that the new treatment system goes beyond the new MEPC 227(64) standards to meet the revised discharge requirements, particularly Section 4.2.”

The revision requires vessels with more than 12 passengers operating in IMO designated “special areas” to reduce the phosphorous and nitrogen content of treated effluent. There is no mandate for this in the existing requirement.

“The new regulations are going to hit the industry hard,” said Beavis. “There are still a significant number of systems in operation that are failing to meet the existing standard let alone the new one.”

Type-approval testing has verified that the ACO Maripur NF® can reduce Coliform Bacteria to 17.5 count/100ml [standard is 100 count/100ml], TSS to 2.4mg/l [standard is 35mg/l], BOD to 7.3mg/l [standard is 25mg/l], and COD to 60mg/l [standard is 125mg/l], while nitrogen and phosphorous content is significantly below the mandated levels of 20mg/l and 1mg/l at 7.2mg/l and 0.3mg/l respectively.

First AlphaBridge consoles delivered Alphatron Marine, working in collaboration with Japan Radio Co (JRC), has completed the first deliveries of a new design of tug console to the latest generation of Rotortugs.

The AlphaBridge console has been configured to allow the captain to exercise complete control from a sitting position, and to benefit from good all-round visibility through full height windows.

Bootle maritime safety specialist International Safety Products (ISP) has secured a new contract with the Polish Navy.

It is the latest in a series of deals which the £8m-turnover exporter has won with the security force – including the largest single order of life jackets in ISP’s history.

The deal comes just a month after the firm, which employs around 100 people, was acquired by a newly-formed Maritime products group in a multi-million pound deal.

ISP commercial director Geoff Billington said the latest exchange involved the supply of more than 300 hundred Intrepid Once Only Survival Suits. The suits are designed as a single-use garment enabling military personnel to evacuate stricken vessels, supporting survival until rescue.

Mr Billington added the large volume deal was secured through ISP’s distribution partner in Poland and showcases the firm’s high level design and manufacturing offering.

“We have supplied a total of 350 Intrepid Once Only Survival Suits to the Polish Navy,” he said.

“These products have been specially designed for military naval use. They are manufactured from highly durable pu-coated nylon and have full SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) approval.

“They are easy to put on and further benefit from universal sizing fitting all personnel. Key features include a full-length waterproof zip and full face seal on the neoprene hood ensuring the user remains warm and dry. Five-fingered gloves also provide the wearer with ability to undertake tasks requiring dexterity.”

The Merseyside firm is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of inflatable marine lifejackets. Its last deal with Poland involved manufacturing 6,500 twin chamber lifejackets for the national army – part of an overall contract worth in excess of £1.2m.

A revolutionary survival platform from Salvare is bound to save livesHaving a place of safety and allowing time for survivors to recover before being rescued at sea is behind the newly designed SEAPODTM inflatable survival platform. The device combines the latest technology, with proven research to solve the age old problems of surviving critical hours before rescue comes; problems of quick deployment, hypothermia, visibility of survivors and staying safely out of the water.

UK Company, Salvare Worldwide, has developed the ingenious SEAPODTM as a solution. A lightweight, easily deployed, fully interlocking inflatable life saving platform based on the *Carley Liferaft concept. But unlike the Carley Liferaft, the SEAPODTM is light, (it weighs less than 4kg and is packed in a water activated case) and offers good protection from the onset of Hypothermia, increasing the chances of survival.

Because of its compactness the SEAPODTM can be stowed on large ships, coastal vessels, small boats, helicopters and aircraft alike. So reliance upon lifejackets alone is a thing of the past.

Salvare states the SEAPODTM is a unique development, “We recognised the market need for a truly safe survival platform early on. Through intensive research, we found that while there are Liferafts with Freeboards, these often failed to launch or are difficult to board, leaving survivors still in the water at greater danger of hypothermia, with nothing but a Lifejacket to rely on. The SEAPODTM offers a much higher chance of survival and is such a big step forward in safety of life at sea.”

The SEAPODTM has two separate auto inflatable chambers activated as soon as it hits the water and capable of retaining a steady position. Even if one chamber is punctured the SEAPODTM’s unique design

enables the other chamber to be manually further inflated to

maintain optimum buoyancy.

A small freeboard allows water to flow freely over the platform, cutting down on

the amount of water retained on-board. Getting onto the

platform has been made simple by reducing the overall thickness of

each platform. The SEAPODTM is only a few centimetres thick and has strategically placed hand and foot holds to ensure survivors board easily. Once there, they stay in position, without being immersed in freezing water, a critical factor delaying the onset of Hypothermia.

Salvare produces several versions of the SEAPODTM in various shapes and sizes designed to carry one or multiple survivors. All are equipped with Solas approved LED lighting as standard. Bright orange in colour and can be manufactured to clip together to make a much larger survival surface. The top of the range version is installed with a MOB location beacon to alert ships and aircraft to its exact location. Being on the surface of the water survivors are also more visible on a SEAPODTM than if wearing a lifejacket alone

Teignbridge Propellers was founded in 1974 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014. Teignbridge design and manufacture high quality performance propellers, sterngear, marine engineering products and are leading innovators in computerised/mechanised marine engineering processes. To service the dry-dock and repair yard sector Teignbridge have an extensive fabrication and repair facility at their UK

Both are equipped with the Teignbridge designed hydraulic tweaking machine that can bend the propeller blades in a controlled manner to achieve a new pitch or straighten a blade back to the original profile.

Teignbridge have also established a strong reputation for upgrading propellers to achieve improved efficiency and fuel economy. In recent years this has been in increasing demand from fishing and ferry boat owners around the world who need to reduce their operating costs. By replacing their propeller with a custom designed high efficiency Teignbridge propeller, customers have been achieving significant fuel savings, with an Australian ferry operator reporting a saving of

For shaft repairs, they can weld repair stainless steel shafts and re-machine them to the original diameter at h9 tolerance. Having three hydraulic shaft presses up to 100mt capacity they can straighten shafts to within their design tolerance.

Teignbridge also manufactures customised composite bearings, which can be supplied in liners and with flanges if required.

Wärtsilä 50DF marine engine has been tested in close collaboration with Evergas and certified to run on ethane (LEG) fuel.

Wärtsilä said. “We are very pleased that the Wärtsilä engines will be capable of utilising ethane boil-off gas as fuel. It increases our operational efficiency and improves flexibility in the bunkering of fuels. All in all it results in a significant reduction in operating costs, while also providing a minimal environmental footprint,” says Steffen Jacobsen, the CEO of Evergas.

The capability to efficiently burn ethane boil-off gas as engine fuel significantly reduces the need of gas re-liquefaction during the voyage. This means that less power is needed for the cargo handling, thus providing a more efficient and environmentally sound overall system, Wärtsilä explained. The engines have the capability to seamlessly switch between

Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), Ethane (LEG), Liquid Fuel Oil (LFO) or Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) without the need for any modifications to hardware and with uninterrupted operation, thereby setting a new standard in fuel flexibility.

Marine Designs Ltd of Falmouth, Cornwall, has recently completed its eleventh offshore wind related project with the installation of crew transfer pontoons in Grimsby Fish Docks for the E.ON Humber Gateway Windfarm Project. The design and build contract involved the construction of 5 x 52t x 6m wide x 1.1m freeboard concrete pontoon units, 16m steel gangway, electrical, sewage and water services, pontoon fuel system and two shore mounted jib cranes.

Particular features of the pontoons included Pontoons for E.ON Humber Gateway Project the use of high quality pre cast concrete made from eco-crete (pre mined aggregates) and top entry service ducts which allow the services to be laid, inspected and adapted easily in the future if required.

Peel Ports, owners of Mersey Docks is the latest port authority to take advantage of AxFlow’s re-engineering facilities at Huddersfield.

The Canada and Wallasey Docks on the north and south banks of the River Mersey are each equipped with four double entry split-case Gwynnes impounding pumps (Fig.1). These pumps have been operating for the best part of 50 years and have given sterling service. Continuous monitoring, coupled with a planned maintenance regime, has played a key role in keeping the pumps running and also in the identification of any problems.

In 2014 indications that the pumps at Canada Dock were running inefficiently prompted Peels Ports to open up two of the pumps for inspection. This revealed considerable wear of the impellers retrofitted in the late 1990’s. Given the age of the pumps, obtaining replacement impellers was impossible as the pumps were no longer manufactured. At this point, Peel Ports turned to AxFlow, Huddersfield for assistance where there

“The initial contract was to supply Peel Ports with two new OD 54 inch double entry Ni-resist impellers, along with two shafts, four shaft sleeves and eight lock nuts,” says Mark Redgrove, Technical Support Manager, AxFlow. “Subsequent to this order we then received an order for casing wear rings and a set of bearings for each pump. Together, both orders amounted to us replacing the entire rotating assembly for each pump. The original worn out cavitated and eroded impellers were in such a poor state that it was necessary for AxFlow to produce a

new pattern and get a foundry to cast two new impellers (Fig.2).”

When operating to optimum efficiency, each of the pumps at both impounding stations delivers up to 60,000 lt/min running at 200rpm. All eight impounding pumps are programmed to go live three hours before and three hours after high tides. The prime focus is targeting the

design buff level to keep the ships afloat when within the port system. It is a highly optimised system operated from a central operational workshop.

The pumps are a key asset within the operational status of the Port’s equipment. In the estimation of Tony Pomford, Infrastructure Engineering Supervisor Peel Ports, when the impellers were removed for inspection they were beyond economical repair.

“They are very robust pumps and open to all the elements associated with salt water contamination. We went for a completely new cast design, because the cost factor side and the life span projection are the asset for Peel Ports’ management team. At the end of the day, I realistically guarantee that we shall get at least another decade out of this first pump once it goes live,” comments Tony Pomford.

Mark Redgrove reports that the first of the pumps was installed and commissioned in April 2015.

Named after the River Shannon it is fitting that Lough Swilly, Donegal had the first of the new class RNLI lifeboats delivered to Ireland on the 10th April 2015.

Built in Lymington it is the lightest but fastest of the RNLI fleet. Interestingly it was design by an Irish man from Londonderry, Mr Peter Eyre who was rescued by the Lough Swilly lifeboat at the age of 14 is now an RNLI naval architect and was a senior designer involved in the development of the new lifeboat.

Noel Gould of Durowipers, the international Windscreen Wipers manufacturer specified on the new Shannon Class said “This design is probably the most advance design of RNLI Lifeboat so it is fitting Durowipers are installed. It is a first for Ireland and proud to be part of a unique story.”

John McCarter Lough Swilly lifeboat Operations Manager said:

“Named after an Irish river, it is a great honour to be the first in Ireland to have the new Shannon Class. The North West of Ireland has very challenging seas, the Shannon class is a capable boat we’ve had crews on it bringing it home and they feel very safe at the helm.”

Salvage and Towage specialist Svitzer is all set to take delivery of two new Damen ASD tugs. Svitzer will operate the tugs, an ASD 2310 named Svitzer Yuma and an ASD 2411 named Svitzer Freeport in and around the port area of Freeport on

the Bahamian island of Grand Bahama. Though Svitzer has ordered vessels from Damen previously, these are the first orders from Svitzer USA in Miami. Damen Manager North America Jan van Hogerwou said he is excited by the development.

Damen Global Account Manager for Svitzer Martijn Smit explained that Svitzer required a fast turnaround on their order, which made Damen’s off-the-shelf approach a natural selection. “Svitzer Yuma was ordered towards the end of last year and Svitzer Freeport in February this year. Both vessels will be delivered simultaneously to the client at

Svitzer to take delivery of Damen ASD 2310 and ASD 2411 tugsthe beginning of June.”

The tugs are being built at Damen Shipyards Changde. The Chinese yard, specialising in the delivery of tugs and workboats, features a production hall for vessels up to 26m, making it the ideal location for the construction of both vessels.

Both Svitzer Yuma and Svitzer Freeport have already been launched and are currently undergoing final outfitting. They will undergo trials in May, after which they will be delivered to the client in Shanghai. From Shanghai the vessels will be transported as heavy-lift cargo to Freeport.

Freeport is the industrial centre of the Bahamas. The port area, which is managed by the Grand Bahama Port Authority, sees a lot of maritime activity from both tourist and industrial sectors. Svitzer plays an important role in the local maritime economy, currently operating four vessels in Grand Bahama.

Upon arrival at their destination, Svitzer will hold a naming ceremony for the vessels. “We want to celebrate the arrival of the vessels with the community of Grand Bahama,” explained Marinus

Lorwa, Chief Operating Officer of Svitzer Caribbean. “The ceremony will be attended by representatives of the Bahamian Government and the Grand Bahama Port Authority, as well as personnel from Damen and our own crew and their families.”

The two-vessel order comes following Damen’s recent delivery of three ATD 2412 tugs and an ASD 3212 to Svitzer. Mr Lorwa explained his reasons for selecting Damen: “We chose Damen because of their excellent reputation and for the outstanding products they deliver. I’ve worked with Damen previously and I’m very pleased with the concept, with the vessels and also with the after-sales care. Marine power transmission from the Centa experts Power transmissions experts, Centa Transmissions, have produced flexible couplings for all types of diesel engine drives since 1979. Their experience is unrivalled, as is their range of products and sizes. With a coupling for every type of marine drive application imaginable, from workboats and fast ferries, to offshore and windfarm support vessels, you can expect to find a Centa flexible coupling in there somewhere.

Couplings vary in what they can achieve so by working with customers during the design process enables the Centa team to specify the ideal coupling based on the particular application:

Torsional couplings. A world leader in this area, there are numerous couplings available from Centa to solve almost every combination.

The CENTAFLEX-RS is a robust roller coupling with a progressive torsional characteristic with very low stiffness at low speed, making it ideal for eradicating gearbox ‘clatter’.

With a torque range of 2.5 to 300KNm, the CENTAX-SEC-L is a highly elastic link coupling with excellent misalignment capability, perfect for use in soft-mounted drives. The rubber element allows high torsional and radial flexibility, enhanced by the axial and angular flexibility provided by the links.

The CENTAMAX range of highly elastic couplings is ideal for controllable pitch propeller installations.

Tailshaft couplings. With nominal torque up to 15KNm the CENTAFLEX-AM is a torsionally elastic, backlash free flexible coupling for all types of pleasure boats and small vessels.

Tailshaft couplings with thrust bearings. Isolating propeller thrust from the engine allows the AV mounts to do a better job. Centa’s AGM range of products allows just this, with thrust bearings capable of 120KN thrust.

Shaft couplings. Known as the silent driveshaft, the CENTALINK is a high performing, torsionally stiff shaft with outstanding kinematics. It provides compensation for considerable axial, radial and

angular misalignment, constant velocity transmission and ensures significant noise reduction.

Carbon fibre drive shafts. CENTADISC-C is an ultra-lightweight carbon fibre driveshaft. Combining plastic elements with carbonfibre shafting, it is ideal for long drive solutions, eliminating the need for additional immediate bearings. Bespoke solutions are also available.

Anti-vibration mounts. Although not manufactured by Centa, by working with industry specialists such as Christie and Grey, Centa can provide a complete solution.

Electromagnetic clutches (EMC). Covering both ends of the PTO spectrum, Centa’s EMC offering includes small 100 Nm clutches through to a 13,000Nm size product.

PTO Drive Couplings. CENTAFLEX-A is a highly versatile flexible coupling which, with minimal effort, enables the custom build of a drive solution for almost any purpose. The range incorporates a highly elastic element that is flexible in any direction and upon which an entire coupling system is based.

Sequential and Comprehensive Data Logging There are two data logging models in the range, one offering simple sequential measurements to be recorded while the other offers comprehensive data logging where the user can add defined text comments, create templates and add radial measurements around a last logged measurement point. Both models record up to 5,000 measurement points, including A-scans.

Data logging models are supplied with the Cygnus CygLink Software. CygLink is a Windows® application for PC’s running Windows 7 and above and is used for uploading data from a data logging gauge. The information can then be analysed, stored, reports can then be created and the data can be exported as a .pdf or .csv file.

Extremely Rugged Enclosure Manufactured using a twin shot injection moulded enclosure which has a soft but durable TPE outer skin, making them both comfortable and extremely durable, while the inner shell is strong, keeping the electronics totally sealed from the outside environments.

ZF Services UK is joining in global celebrations for the 100th anniversary of parent company ZF Friedrichshafen AG - and taking the opportunity presented by this milestone to encourage people to think about ZF in a new way.

Graham Truckel, Managing Director of ZF Services UK, the UK after sales business unit of ZF Friedrichshafen AG, said the celebratory year provided the chance to reflect on the wider achievements of the Group and the part ZF Services UK had played in it.

ZF Services UK was formed in 2011 through the merger of ZF GB, the sales and service organisation in Nottingham, and ZF Trading, the aftermarket parts supplier which itself was formed in 2004 following the merger of Sachs Boge UK and LMI GB.

The roots of ZF Friedrichshafen AG can be traced back to 9th September 1915 when the name of its forerunner Zahnradfabrik GmbH appeared for the

first time in a trade register. It began as a supplier to the aviation industry growing to become the giant it is today; a global leader in driveline and chassis technology employing 71,400 people.

UK commemorations kicked off with a ‘visit’ to the Nottingham facility from the ZF 100 sculpture which is on a tour of strategic locations within the driveline and chassis technology group. ‘Trearddur Bay’ the first boat to be fitted with the Voith Linear Jet built by Aluminium Marine ConsultantsAntony Robson, Captain of the new Turbine Transfers’ ‘Trearddur Bay’ is in awe of his new vessel. “It’s completely different to anything already out there, it’s not a prop boat, it’s not a jet boat – and, given what we need, it drives better than either,”

At 21m long, this 7m Beam support catamaran is a world first, says Rob Stewart of Aluminum Marine Consultants. With a build of this significance the team at Aluminium Marine Consultants have a wealth of industry knowledge and the experience need to carry the construction to successful completion.

Mr Stewart explained that the build has meant close cooperation between Aluminium Marine Consultants, Turbine Transfers, BMT and Voith: although the BMT Nigel Gee design had been tailored specifically to take the new linear jets, putting it all together was a challenge: “With anything new, especially with an innovative build like this, you are always going to have some tweaks between paper and cutting metal.”

While her size is impressive, what really gives Trearddur Bay its edge is her speed, a windfarm service vessel this sized often needs to keep a pace between 25 to 35 knots.

Trearddur Bay’s is fitted with a Voith Linear Jet. A world first, the Voith Linear Jet is a break-through form of propulsion that provides a unique and flawless solution to both high speed and zero speed power. “It’s a propeller in a shaped nozzle, with stators in the back so that the water flow comes out as a jet rather than having a circular motion,” explains marine superintendent Alistair Knowles of Turbine Transfers.

The 750kg, double walled stainless steel nozzles, which sit in front of a pair of Clements Rudders, are tailored to the vessel in a way that delays the cavitation point. This allows not only for effortless operation, but means the subsequent noise and vibration levels are kept extremely low, a feature which is enhanced by the resiliently mounted superstructure. When commenting on noise levels within the vessel, Mr Knowles said that the levels recorded were down to 62db, and that ‘’we could chat comfortably without raising our voices, even at high speed’.”

But it is not just smooth ride and well-adjusted acoustics that make the Trearddur Bay a world leader; it also yields huge fuel efficiency advantages.

During trials, the vessel exceeded itself, and the results truly speak for themselves. Mr. Knowles described the results as “phenomenal, it’s extremely fuel efficient for a vessel of its size, so able to run at 25 knots under reduced power and with consumption comparable to smaller less capable boat.”

While the vessels superb efficiency is indeed a key talking point, it is not the only thing to have benefited. “Originally it was calculated by Voith that it would perform at about 27 knots but during trails it was recorded at 32 knots’’ said Rob Stewart, Aluminium Marine Consultant’s Commercial Director. Further, because the vessel will be used to carry equipment, it was loaded with 7 tonnes, half on the foredeck half behind “and we still got a 30 knot speed with no loss of handling”, added Mr Knowles. “We’ve measured bollard pull of 12.4 tonnes whereas most jets of a similar size would only give you 6 tonnes. That’s over double,” said the Captain Robson.

What is particularly important is the simplest and most cost effective access methods, which remain simply pushing the vessel hard against the boat landings. Mr Stewart described it as a matter of generating the maximum ‘stick’ between the boat fender and the landing tubes, damping out vessel motion as much as possible and allowing easy transfer for the technicians to the wind turbine. Mr Robson added: “It’s a case of rubber on metal. If we can do it at lower revs, and I am hoping I can push on at 50% power with this boat, then it gives us a lot of extra in reserve.”

Down below in the hulls of the catamaran is the tank area with 500 litres of fresh water and 5,800 litres of fuel. Aft of this, each hull holds an MTU 10V M72 engine that yields 1,250 bhp through ZF3000 gearboxes. A pair of Cummins Onan gensets provide the onboard electrical power, and both engines and auxiliaries are supported by battery packs: although there are ‘service’ and ‘starter’ banks, these can be cross linked to get the engines going if necessary.

Perhaps fittingly for a vessel of this calibre, the entire thing has a futuristic feel. The engines are bright white, teamed with the silver insulation which covers the flame retardant wall coverings. Mr Robson explained “Along with the sensors and alarms there’s a camera here so the crew can see what’s happening below’’. Arguably however, the key safety device is the crew and their

expertise and familiarity with these engines.

Located on the bridge you’ll find there’s Class A AIS, autopilot, SART, EPIRB and MOB location system, alongside a wealth of other features such as magnetic and GPS compasses, and radios that have been put together as a package by Boat Electrics. The two radar displays offer exemplary assistance in reduced visibility with electronic chart display. While these features are all relatively standard on a vessel of this class, some of the elements needed some optimization, which is hardly surprising when you consider how different the characteristics of the VLJ’s compared to anything that has gone before.

The deck saloon offers ample space comfortably accommodating 12 technicians, with Cleeman Nautic Star leather chairs arranged around four tables, allowing for the technicians to review plans in a social space which promotes productivity and team building. Alongside is galley, shower and washing space, as well as a laundry space.

The 21m2 forward deck space is equipped with a pressure washing system from Hercules, specialist equipment that can be used for cleaning down the towers T-pieces. It has the preparation for a hydraulic deck crane, as well as sporting a fuel transfer system and a Hercules hydraulic windlass. Towards the aft you’ll find another 20m2 space, with each deck having the sockets to lock in a 10ft container.

The quality of build and expertise in finish are something that cannot be ignored. The craft and integrity of the build team shines through, and teamed with its fantastic and unrivalled level of technology, Trearddur Bay truly deserves its title as world class.

Mr Robson reminds us, “Trearddur Bay does a 360 degree circle around a 250 metres radius, but does it without much loss of speed,” he said. “If you did this kind of hard lock turn with a conventional water jet, you’d usually find the jet gets deflected onto the nozzles with a resulting loss of thrust and momentum: the boat then just drops off the plane and will probably stop. This boat just keeps going.”

BankServe on protecting marine assetsWhen it comes to contingent insurance protection for ship financiers, the old adage ‘if you want something done right, do it yourself’ can often ring true.

Shipping is attracting money from all sorts of different places – with new investors and lenders entering the market looking for high returns and the promise of asset play. These new investors and lenders consider the projects presented carefully, using the best lawyers, ship valuers and surveyors to make deals as watertight as possible. They check borrowers as much as they can – obtain detailed reviews on the insurances arranged on the assets and insist on the best. However, they are then making a huge mistake – they let someone else arrange their contingent insurance protection and as a consequence devalue that protection by over 50 percent in the process. Why?

The best place to start is to examine what the insurance does that the investors should be buying. All marine assets will have three basic types of cover that the owner will buy – these are hull and machinery, war and protection and indemnity (P&I) cover. All of these will be checked by investors and their advisors for both their breadth and the security of the underwriters accepting the risk. This is standard and those covers are correctly the responsibility of the owner or operator of the vessel. The loan documentation will contain a general assignment and notice of that assignment will be signed at drawdown so that the world at large can be told of the investor/lender interest and the relevant policies endorsed accordingly.

This is fine so far, but as with all contracts of insurance there is the possibility of avoidance of claims by underwriters. It doesn’t happen often, thankfully, and the vast majority of insurance claims are processed without dispute as to liability or quantum. Even where there are disputes they are invariably resolved by compromise without financial detriment being suffered by investors or lenders. The problems come when underwriters don’t pay or the compromise available is not sufficient to satisfy investors and lenders. It is this position that contingent insurance protections are there to deal with – they step in to pay investors and lenders when the owner’s policies don’t and it is the very infrequency of such

claims that means the correct attention is not being given, to either the wordings used or who is arranging the cover.

The problem The contingent insurances available fall basically under two headings: Mortgagee’s Interest Insurance (MII), which is for lenders securing their position with ship mortgages; and Lessor’s Interest/Innocent Owner’s Insurance (LII/IOI), which is designed to protect finance investors who buy vessels and give them to third party operators by way of lease, bareboat or management. Requirement for these insurances is included in loan documentation, but securing cover is frequently simply a box just to be ticked and failure to tick the box correctly can be a very expensive hobby.

Until a claim is made on an insurance policy it is simply a piece of paper in a file, which gives some comfort on dark stormy nights. Only when money is needed does the adequacy of that piece of paper get tested and only during the claims process are cracks and deficiencies found. Those cracks may be overcome with legal argument, but at the same time may be fatal to a claim. Lessons are learned with every claim and the marine insurance world has a habit of throwing up unique problems. MII and LII/IOI insurances are not like the hull and machinery policies purchased by owners – underwriters of MII and LII/IOI covers don’t expect claims. Rejection of claims made by owners on their insurances is a rare occurrence and as a consequence claims on contingent protections are rare too.

Any contract, whether by way of insurance or not, will never be perfect and there will always be debate about the meaning of words and the obligations of each party. The more debates there are the more the contractual terms will be defined and arguments rehearsed about what the contract actually does. That is a hugely useful part of the process – if you like a form of evolution. A learning process with different points being raised each time a claim or dispute arises and changes made to reflect the needs of the parties in the future. The more disputes there are the more a contract gets examined and the quicker the learning process becomes, such that each side gets to know more and more about the product they are

Difficulties to overcome The difficulty for MII and LII/IOI assureds is that the evolutionary process is slow and largely unpublicised, occurring quietly out of the glare of the public eye and it is because of this snail like pace of development that wordings and coverage available vary, perhaps more than any other type of insurance cover.

By way of example owners buy their hull and machinery cover on various sets of international clauses with standard amendments, which are understood by both those arranging cover and those giving the cover. In contrast MII is arranged either on the standard Institute Mortgagees Interest clauses (there are two sets dated 30/5/1986 and 1/3/1997) or on a myriad of wordings designed by brokers in conjunction with their clients. The Institute MII clauses should be avoided by lenders and investors at all costs and if the piece of paper reached for in times of trouble is based on such clauses, then simply ticking the box has turned out to be no tick at all. Other sets of clauses may look similar but there will be subtle variations based on pieces of experience and assureds looking at wordings and saying “what if this happens – can we amend to take account of that?”

The difficulty is that no matter how long you sit in a room trying to think of every eventuality to close possible gaps, the marine world will produce a situation that no-one has thought of – or a lawyer acting for underwriters will read a clause in an entirely different way to that which is intended. Interpretation of wordings is both an answer and a problem, and even if wide wordings are used those tasked with collecting claims may have no idea of what weapons they have at their disposal; a little like having a gun but not knowing how to fire it.

Strainstall completes world’s first successful intelligent fender system (IFS)™ offshore trial at Greater GabbardStrainstall, part of James Fisher and Sons plc, is pleased to announce the successful completion of the world’s first Intelligent Fender System trial with energy companies SSE and RWE at their Suffolk based wind farm, Greater Gabbard.

The Intelligent Fender System is an innovative, in-house developed technology which provides accurate and recordable data to improve safety and increase operational efficiency for vessel and offshore wind farm operators during transfer operations. The Greater Gabbard trial enabled Strainstall to verify IFS’s performance in the accurate monitoring and reporting of vessel push-on forces against offshore wind turbines.

Sid Anverali, general manager for Greater Gabbard, explained: “Logistics are a significant element of our operations and monitoring of vessel performance and more importantly, improvement or suggestions, are of interest. We consider innovation a vital part of development within our industry and are pleased Gabbard has been able to trial IFS.”

Trials were carried out utilising James Fisher’s offshore support vessel, Dart Fisher, which was retrofitted with IFS earlier in 2015 and is now the only vessel operating worldwide with this innovative technology. Addressing key issues within the offshore wind industry, IFS will be

Highlighting the success of the trial Simon Everett, managing director of Strainstall, explained: “Up until this point there has not been any accurate real-time data to help support operators to monitor the forces being exerted, so this is an industry first. IFS now allows them to have very accurate records of real-time date that enables operators to efficiently manage their assets”.

Working with partners KPM Marine to develop the frame, IFS uses Strainstall’s market-leading strain gauge technology, mounted in a rugged slim-line steel frame

on the bow of the boat, to provide real-time updates of the vessel’s impact and push-on forces against the turbine to the skipper and the wind farm operator. The Intelligent Fender System measures and records all forces being applied onto the turbines providing a warning signal when a vessel is going over the optimal pushing force, which is outlined by the offshore wind farm operators, enabling the protection of people and assets offshore.

Everett added: “There is nothing else in the market that can provide accurate real-time data. This enables the offshore renewable industry to take advantage of the potential cost-savings and increase the protection of their assets”.

A&P Group wins major MoD contract to customise and support new RFA tanker fleetA&P Group, the UK’s largest provider of ship repair, conversion and marine services, has been awarded a multi-million pound Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract to complete the fit-out of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s new fleet of four tankers.

The new Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) tankers will maintain the Royal Navy’s ability to refuel at sea and will provide fuel to warships and task groups. The tankers will support deployed amphibious, land and air forces close to the shore and will have the ability to operate helicopters.

A&P Group is owned by Atlantic & Peninsula Marine Services Limited and has facilities in Falmouth, Tyneside, Teeside and Sydney in Australia, will customise the vessels to UK MoD standards and will support the vessels as they go through their initial capability assessment trials.

The four tankers are planned to enter service from 2016 and A&P Group will provide through-life support to all four ships in service for a minimum of three years.

John Syvret CBE, CEO of Atlantic & Peninsula Marine Services Limited, said this latest contract will underpin the growth of A&P Group over the next five years.

Mr Syvret said: “This contract reflects the capability and capacity of A&P Group and is recognition of the calibre of the infrastructure and work force which exists in A&P Falmouth and across the group as a whole.

“The Tide-class tankers are an example of the contracts and market opportunities that A&P Group can secure – strengthening the long term growth of A&P Group and driving employment opportunities which will result in strong regional economic growth. These opportunities lie at the heart of the long term strategy for A&P Group in Falmouth, Tyneside, Teeside, and in Sydney Australia.”

The Tide-class tankers are currently under construction in South Korea. Each of four new Tide-class tankers – RFA Tidespring,

RFA Tiderace, RFA Tidesurge and RFA Tideforce – will be 201 metres long, with a beam of nearly 29 metres and displacing more than 37,000 tonnes. The first tanker, RFA Tidespring, is due to arrive in the UK in December 2015. She will be followed by her three sister ships at six-monthly intervals.

A&P Group Managing Director, Andy Shaw said: “The contract is significant for A&P Falmouth where the majority of the works will be undertaken utilising the company’s deep water facilities and heavy engineering infrastructure. The contract also provides A&P group’s port business, Falmouth Docks and Engineering Company, (the Statutory Harbour Authority), with additional business streams and enables it to progress with its ambitious growth strategy.” As a result of this contract, A&P Group will now be maintaining 13 Royal Navy vessels from its base in Falmouth.

A&P Group already has a contract to support and maintain RFA ships at home and abroad until 2018. Under the Cluster

Support Progamme, A&P Group provides maintenance support to groups of MoD vessels which include RFA Argus and the RFA Bay Class vessels Mounts Bay, Cardigan Bay and Lyme Bay.

A&P Group also has contracts with BAE Systems to support the three River Class offshore patrol vessels HMS Mersey, HMS Tyne and HMS Severn plus the two hydrographic survey vessels HMS Echo and Enterprise.

Mr Shaw said: “A&P as a group continues to demonstrate its exemplary track record, not only to the RFA but also the wider defence sector. A&P Group contracts include the MoD Aircraft Carrier build programme and the Astute contract. A&P Australia continues to service HMAS Choules in contract with the Royal Australian Navy.

“Securing this contract further cements the relationship with the MoD and demonstrates the confidence in A&P to deliver excellent service in a highly effective and economical way.”

Delivery of Aqualink denotes landmark in evolution of Blyth Workcats The first two-deck boat ever built by Blyth Workcats has recently been delivered to a happy customer in Belgium. The 18-metre Aqualink is the first Blyth Workcat to feature a high bridge and it has now entered service with Ostend Marine Services for which it has been designed to undertake a wide range marine operations. These include work as a charter survey vessel while also being equipped with an Ocean 3 bow fender and wide foredeck that enable it to undertake crew transfer and cargo delivery to offshore wind farms.

Powered by two MAN V8 750 engines the new boat has a cruising speed of 20 knots and a range of around 700 miles that is made possible by two 600 gallon fuel tanks and an economical fuel consumption of around 75 litres per hour. The smart cabin interior is fitted to carry 10-passengers in comfort on full suspension seats. There is also a kitchen and dinette and a two-berth cabin for use during extended cruising.

The Aqualink is possibly unique among vessels of this size in that it can also be chartered as a fully equipped professional survey boat. Its design includes a watertight compartment occupied by a moon pool and multi-beam sonar deployment module designed and built specifically for the vessel. There is also an A-frame davit that can be used for launching a RIB, towfish or for bottom sampling and the deployment of seabed equipment. The high bridge affords clear, all-round visibility

from the helm and navigation seats and also accommodates the principal survey desk that can be used for topsides electronics when on charter.

This is now the second Blyth boat that Ostend Marine Services has purchased from the Canvey Island, UK, yard. The company has been using a 14-metre Workcat successfully for several years and experience gained with this boat has enabled the new owners to identify design refinements and to commission the new vessel to include a variety of features of their choosing.

“There is probably no such thing as a standard Blyth Workcat and the Aqualink illustrates this perfectly,” said Edward Tuite customer services manager for the yard. “We specialise in being able to provide custom quality boats at mass production prices and this is a good way of winning customer loyalty. Buyers can specify all of the little and apparently inconsequential details that make the difference between a boat that is simply acceptable and one that is loved. It can be built without any of the niggling irritations that can stop a design winning five stars of approval from the customer. An example on the Aqualink is the small wash basin that has been installed on the after deck just outside the cabin. This was fitted at the customer’s request so that there is no need for passengers or crew to bring grubby hands into the accommodation area. It is details like this that make a difference to a boat and we are happy to include them.”

All Blyth Workcats enjoy a reputation for their rugged sea-keeping capabilities and the new Blyth 18-metre High Bridge now joins a range consisting of 10, 11, 12, 14 and 20-metre catamarans. These can be built for wind farm support, surveying, dive support, passenger ferry, fishing charter or any of a wide range of workboat tasks. James Fisher awarded strategic marine services agreement with Balfour Beatty, the UK’s leading Offshore Transmission Owner (OFTO) investor.

James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS), part of James Fisher and Sons plc, announces the signing of a strategic agreement with Balfour Beatty to become the exclusive integrated marine service provider for its OFTO asset portfolio in offshore wind farms around the UK. The agreement will see James Fisher provide a fully managed service for the supply of marine access solutions, support infrastructure and operation and maintenance services for OFTO assets.

Under the scope of the agreement James Fisher will employ its specialist capabilities, resources and expertise to assist Balfour Beatty in the completion of scheduled and non-scheduled operations and maintenance works.

“We are very pleased to have this agreement in place with James Fisher” commented David Phillips, OFTO managing director of Balfour Beatty. “With its significant expertise in the marine environment, extensive range of dedicated assets, skilled resources and responsiveness, James Fisher is best placed to support our support our current and future OFTO asset maintenance programmes”.

The first activities under this agreement have been successfully implemented including the provision of a dedicated access vessel, safety management system development, and provision of dedicated facilities in the Port of Mostyn to support the safe mobilisation and transfer of Balfour Beatty technicians to the Gwynt y Mor substations.

An innovative industry solution designed and manufactured in the north-east is enhancing offshore operations in the North Sea.

A leading provider of specialist back-deck equipment to the oil and gas industry, Maritime Developments has delivered a 400-tonne reel drive system (RDS) to a major offshore contractor.

The latest addition to Maritime Developments’ portfolio, the 5th since the product’s launch in 2013, has now been deployed for front-line operations by the client.

To date, the five systems delivered include Maritime Developments’ rental unit, which has already been used on five North Sea multi-reel installation projects.

Key features of the RDS include automatic fail-safe clamps, as well as an automated raising and lowering system which negates working at height. It is also road transportable and can be reassembled on the quayside.

Available in 400-tonne and 500-tonne specification, the system monitors torque

on the reel ensuring that it is operated within its design limits.

Mike Gaskin, commercial director at Maritime Developments, said: “We are delighted to have successfully delivered a fifth reel drive system for a major offshore contractor.

“This highlights the capability of our team to find innovative solutions to meet the needs of industry players. The company is now looking to add another reel drive to our rental fleet in the near future to address the growing industry demand for the solution.”

Established in 1999, Maritime Developments designs, manufactures and delivers back-deck equipment for the global oil, gas and renewables sectors from its bases in Aberdeen and Peterhead.

The company offers a full suite of back-deck equipment for deployment and retrieval of subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF products), for sale and rental, alongside its design, engineering, manufacture and asset support services.

Fifth reel drive system successfully delivered by Maritime Developments

The largest vessel registered in the UK Ship Register which is the length of five and a half A380 Airbus planes has arrived in a British port for the first time.

The CMA CGM Kerguelen, which is 435 yards (398 metres) long, has docked at Southampton. It is capable of carrying nearly 18,000 standard 20ft-long shipping containers and is driven by an engine of 9,000hp - the equivalent of 30 Range Rovers.

The bridge is towards the front of the vessel which the owners say gives better visibility and gives the ship more resistance.

“As an island nation we rely hugely on the shipping and ports industries, about 95 per cent of the goods by volume that come into and out of the UK, are handled by our ports to keep our lives, our businesses and our economy moving.” Said Sir Alan Massey, chief executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The layout also allows fuel tanks to be positioned under the castle where they are protected by the double hull.

Sir Alan said: “I am delighted to welcome CMA CGM Kerguelen on to the UK Ship Register, particularly as she is now the largest vessel afloat under the Red Ensign.

A UK company that is leading the way in the field of seabed harvesting is to fund two PhD posts at Plymouth University.

Seabed Resources Development Limited is funding two students to undertake doctorates in marine and earth science within Plymouth’s Marine Institute over the next four years.

The partnership between the University and the company, which is a subsidiary of technology and engineering firm Lockheed Martin UK, will give two graduate students from developing countries the opportunity to become experts in a field critical to the emerging deep seabed economy.

One of the PhD posts funded under this programme will focus on seabed mapping, working alongside the University’s acclaimed scientist, Associate Professor Kerry Howell. The other course will focus on geochemistry and the extraction of minerals, working with academics in the school of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Electron Microscopy Centre.

Stephen Ball, chief executive of Seabed Resources Development Ltd and Lockheed Martin UK, said: “Harvesting minerals from the seabed will have far reaching benefits and this is an exciting opportunity for two graduate students to help us develop our knowledge and expertise and ensure we remain at the forefront of this emerging industry. We are firmly committed to the environmentally friendly extraction of nodules and look forward to partnering with Plymouth University, which has an excellent reputation for research in this area.”

Both courses will commence in 2015 and include a guaranteed place on a research trip to the Pacific as part of the arrangement.

Cammell Laird sees spike in ferry dockingsBritish shipyard and marine engineering services company Cammell Laird has reported that the number of ferry dockings in the first four months of 2015 almost matched the number of ferries the shipyard docked throughout the entire 2014.

Cammell Laird has seen 15 ferries docked at its Birkenhead 120 acre site, including four drydocks, in 2015. A further three ferries are booked in for drydocking and repairs.

Managing Director Linton Roberts said the company has undertaken the work for a range of long standing clients including Caledonian MacBrayne, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Irish Ferries, NorthLink Ferries, P&O Ferries and Seatruck Ferries.

”It has been a really strong year for ferry drydockings and repairs and we are keen to build on this and win more work from new and existing clients,” Roberts said.

”The work we have undertaken has made full use of our drydocks

which are suitable for vessels up to 40m beam. The drydockings have included conventional and high-speed vessels, in steel or aluminium. They have ranged from the 46m, 617 gross tons Mersey Ferry Snowdrop to the 209m, 50,938 gross tons Irish Ferries Ulysses.”

Meanwhile Cammell Laird Technical Services recently completed a design for the conversion of a number of EuroShip Services Ltd managed vessels to be able to run on both Heavy Fuel Oils and Marine Gas Oil.

Cammell Laird technical manager Paul Ashcroft said this offered ‘big benefits’ to ship owners allowing them to reduce fuel costs when sailing in non-Environmental Control Areas (ECA) and to run on low sulphur MGO to comply with ECA emission regulations.

”Throughout the design process Cammell Laird sought to produce bespoke designs for each ship. This enabled us to undertake the prefabrication of system pipework and steelwork before each ship’s arrival. When the ships then arrive here we were able to make the modifications quickly and efficiently, reducing disruption and keeping costs down. Cammell Laird is targeting ship operators to help them meet new environmental laws in the next few years. We will work closely with ship managers, owners and operators to provide engineering solutions to the challenges being faced over the coming years with new environmental legislation coming into force,” Ashcroft said.

”There is not one simple solution to suit all vessels. Much depends on the type of ship, the geographical trading area, its age and operating profile.”

Italy may have found boat that killed 900 migrantsItaly’s Marina Militare published images of what they believe is the wreck of the ship that sank off Libya on April 18, killing up to 900 migrants in what could be the biggest loss of life involving refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean.

The Italian Navy used two minesweepers and a smaller navy vessel fitted with sonar equipment, as well as a semi-submersible, to locate a 25-meter boat that matches the description of the one that had sunk last month.

The ship was located at the depth of 375 meters some 85 miles north of Libya. However, a Navy official said that even though the located wreck matches the length and the description, it is still not certain that the located boat in fact is the boat that carried the migrants to their death.

The Italian Navy and Coast Guard have recovered 24 bodies and 28 survivors from the sunken ship, including the ship’s captain and another survivor, who had been charged with human trafficking by a prosecutor’s office in Sicily.

MAST: Security situation in the Mediterranean could get out of handIncidents of criminality and piracy on the high seas and in coastal areas of the Mediterranean could become more prevalent as the human trafficking organisations become more established, says Phil Cable, CEO of security firm MAST.

The rapid increase in human trafficking out of Libya and other North African countries has raised concerns as it could become a jumping off point for terrorism, piracy or other forms of criminality.

“We need to remember that these movements of people are occurring in a part of the Mediterranean which is relatively narrow. With vessels concentrated into a small area it will not be difficult for terrorists and criminals to successfully target commercial and private shipping,” Cable said while speaking at the Sea Trade Awards in London on Wednesday 6th May.

“It is clear from the conversations we are having with our clients in the shipping industry that there is real concern that the security situation in the Mediterranean could get out of hand. The key lesson learnt from combating Somali piracy is that failure to act early and decisively has long term consequences, especially on seafarers’ lives,” he added.

As explained, cooperation between the international bodies such as the UN and EU, along with national governments and the shipping industry is key.

“If national governments commit to providing sufficient and capable assets for policing and law enforcement, it should be possible to massively reduce the potential for collateral. It is nevertheless incumbent on the shipping industry to play its part through taking appropriate measures to ensure their vessels and crews are kept safe through additional security measures, such as Best Management Practices 4 (BMP4),” he added.

There is a growing sense of nervousness within the shipping industry as industry analysts warn that the Mediterranean might be under threat from Somali style piracy.

MAST believes that the increasingly fragile security situation in the Mediterranean is a threat to Europe and that this change was being fuelled by the situation in Libya, which is becoming a haven for criminals engaged in people smuggling.

“Another lesson of Somali piracy is that policing the high seas and self-protection of vessels is only a part of the solution. Effective law enforcement, which works seamlessly across international and national boundaries, is vital to medium and long term success. This takes time to set up and requires cooperation from regional states if it is to be successful,” he went on to say.
