Dredging vessels and tugs have mobilised ahead of the £25m Port of Cromarty Firth expansion at Invergordon.

Recently vessels started to berth in the Port in what marked the first stage of an 18 month programme of works. The expansion project sees the Port of Cromarty Firth reclaim 9 acres of land from the sea and create an additional deep water berth.

Other recent announcements have demonstrated the level of interest the port has created internationally across marine, oil & gas sectors and demand is high amongst companies for operational space.

Dredging will be started to the west of the existing Queens Dock. Over an expected month 21,000 cubic metres of silt and mud will be removed from the sea bed, peeling back the transient layers of the Firth to reach a solid foundation upon which to build the expansion.

CEO for the Port of Cromarty Firth, Bob Buskie, said “This is a crucial step in ensuring the expansion project remains on target. All dredging activity in the Cromarty Firth must halt between the months of May – September, to protect the species of Dolphins, Seals and Porpoise that are at home in these waters.”

“We’ve employed independent environmental consultants, Affric Ltd, to work with us for the duration of the construction works, to ensure that there is minimal disruption to the local community and to ensure we meet our environmental responsibilities.”

Mobilisation ahead of £25m expansion project

“The expansion project is essential to ensure that the Port of Cromarty Firth and the Invergordon Service Base can continue to compete in an increasingly competitive and international market. This is good news for the communities who make their living directly and indirectly from port activities.

The expansion is due to be completed Summer 2015 and it is expected to support may full time employment opportunities.

Bob adds “Additionally, we have allocated a dredging and works licence to Nigg Energy Park, also located in the Port of Cromarty Firth, to enable them to commence their own quayside development. Dredging work has also commenced recently.”

Meercat delivers second Saudi vessel

British boatbuilder Meercat Workboats has recently delivered its second vessel for Saudi Arabia with Conwy and Belfast Harbour vessel orders also confirmed.

Meercat Workboats of Portsmouth has delivered its twentieth new build workboat. A departure from their normal road transportable designs, this is a 15m x 6m mono hulled “daughter craft”.

The vessel, Zamil MC-1 is designed to be carried on the deck of a pipe servicing ship and will operate in Saudi Arabian waters servicing the shallow water sections of sub-sea pipelines. Much of the pipelines in this area are reaching an age where maintenance is becoming a problem.

News In brief....

Two Chemical Tankers Join Navig8

Navig8, provider of shipping management services, has welcomed 2 vessels to its fleet, the UACC Manama and UACC Shamiya. The two chemical tankers will join Chronos8 Pool. UACC Manama, built in 2010 was slated for delivery in May 2014, whereas the delivery of UACC Shamiya, built in 2011, will follow two months later, in July. The two tankers have 45,000-dwt and were built in Korea. The expansion, in line with the recent market developments, as the company is experiencing robust demand growth for chemical tankers, expects an acceleration of demand growth from 2015 onwards, initially from the Middle East producers.

Two more CTruk workboats for OTS

Since launching three years ago Pontrilas-based Offshore Turbine Services has gone from strength to strength with a refined offering of reliable and efficient crew, fuel, cargo and equipment transfer services to offshore wind turbines, sub stations and other offshore developments requiring maritime logistics.

Speed, flexibility, minimum vessel downtime and cost-effectiveness are the company’s main focus points, and the decision to operate CTruk’s multi-role composite catamaran workboats has proven key in delivering these. Offshore Turbine Services now owns six of CTruk’s popular 20T MPC offshore wind support vessels, with a seventh currently in the final stages of production.

Newbuilding ordering activity slows down as owners adopt more conservative approach to the market

Ship owners are looking to capitalize on low pricing of newbuildings, but after the “bonanza” of the first few months of the year are now contemplating their next moves, as the freight markets don’t seem to follow pace and move upwards as was expected to occur this year. Newbuilding activity has now slowed down over the past few weeks.

Vitesse Marine on show

Vitesse Marine has built a reputation as a quality supplier of marine equipment to boat builders, marine engineers and chandlers, over the past 11 years, is making its Seawork debut this year. Its full range of products includes International Paint, Vetus Equipment, Lalizas & Nuova Rade, Whale and Jabsco, plus commercial fire-resistant hoses.

New products for 2014 include the Nuova Rade injection moulded range.

Export growth for Cheetah

Isle of Wight UK catamaran builder, Cheetah Marine has seen a noticeable increase in exports this year.

M/V Global Vega, launched in February 2014, is the 8th vessel delivered by the shipbuilder in 2014, and 179th ship delivered since the establishment of THICI in 1994. The ship, with five cargo holds and four deck cranes, has a length of 190 meters and width of 32.26 meters.

The vessel, owned by a Japanese national, went first to Indonesia where she was loaded with coal. With a total of 60 more ships still to be delivered, THICI will be busy until 2017.

Cromarty Firth expansion gets underway

Dredging vessels and tugs have started to arrive as the Port of Cromarty Firth’s £25m port expansion prepares to get under way at Invergordon. The first stage of the 18 month programme will see the port reclaim nine acres of land from the sea and create an additional deep water berth. The project reflects the interest the port has created across the oil and gas sector with a high demand for operational space.

Dredging will be starting to the west of the Queens Dock and over the next month 21,000m3 of silt and mud will be removed from the seabed, removing the transient layers of the Firth to reach a solid foundation on which to build the expansion.

The UK Chamber of Shipping has welcomed the recent announcement – as part of National Apprenticeship Week – that ship ratings, including engineering, navigation and catering roles, will be included as one of the Department for Business ‘Trailblazer’ apprenticeships.

UK Chamber CEO and former seafarer, Guy Platten said:

“The UK is known the world over for its seafaring skills and the UK has a proud maritime history, but this investment proves we are determined to build a maritime future too.

“The long-term prosperity of the UK shipping industry depends completely on the people entering it. Training must equip seafarers with key skills and develop their careers as fully as possible while meeting the needs of employers, and the Trailblazer announcement is a huge step towards this.

“This announcement is extremely valuable for the industry and demonstrates the Government’s recognition of the importance of maritime careers.”

Trailblazers are a new model of apprenticeships recommended by the Richard Review in 2013 that will supersede all existing models by 2016, ensuring that apprenticeship training meets standards required by industry and employers rather than training providers.

‘huge step’ forward for seafarer apprenticeships

The UK Chamber, Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and Maritime Skills Alliance (MSA), campaigned successfully through 2013 to allow the model to extend to elements of seafarer training, and Guy Platten said of the campaign:

“Thanks must be paid to the hard work of the MNTB and our member companies who have been involved in the process aimed, ultimately, at increasing the opportunities for young people in the UK to train for a career at sea.”

Gemma Griffin, Vice President HR & Crewing for DFDS Seaways and chair of the UK Chamber’s Employment Committee will chair a Trailblazer employer group that includes several UK Chamber member companies, with many more having indicated their interest. The employer group will work with the MNTB and MSA to define the scope of the apprenticeships and Gemma said of the announcement:

“Employer-led apprenticeships of this kind are not only vital for DFDS Seaways, but also for the maritime sector as a whole. They help us safeguard the future of our industry by ensuring that we have young people entering the industry with the right skills, expertise and support they need to be able to work effectively and safely.”

The scheme was officially launched at a reception in Downing Street.

North Star Shipping has been recognised for safety leadership at the annual Safety Awards jointly organised by Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety.

The firm’s safety manager, Paul Craig, has won the highly coveted award for his out-standing leadership which has led to demonstrable improvements in safety and reduced the risks of incidents occurring.

North Star Shipping operates and manages Craig Group’s fleet of 35 offshore support and emergency response and rescue vessels in the North Sea. Paul oversees the health and safety of the 1,000 crew on-board these vessels which operate in one of the harshest environments in the world.

The award is given to an inspirational leader who motivates and engages their team to work safely and can demonstrate how their safety leadership style has benefited both their employer and the oil and gas industry.

Callum Bruce, managing director of North Star Shipping, said: “Through his inspirational leadership and continual innovation, Paul has gained the trust and credibility of staff above and below him, winning their hearts and minds and positively influencing a major change in attitudes and behaviours, with more people now taking a proactive approach to safety. He has a clear vision which he has successfully communicated to everyone within the company and is committed to our number one priority of getting the crew to work, carrying out their work effectively and getting home safely. He has ensured that North Star is at the forefront of safety in the North Sea, helping make our industry safer and giving our customers confidence in the safety and effectiveness of our service.”

“Under his leadership safety has improved but, more importantly, every person now has a clearer understanding and appreciation of their role in safety. The company has truly embraced and continually fosters a living safety culture.”

North Star Shipping recognised for safety leadership at Oil & Gas UK Awards

Paul was commended for his excellent communication skills, his personal, practical approach, which has encouraged people to take ownership of their safety and the safety of those around them, and for the many initiatives he has introduced. These include internal safety awards, a safety checklist app, sharing lessons learnt with the industry, engaging with clients and suppliers, the “Boots on Deck” initiative to encourage shore-side personnel to spend more time on the vessels they manage and the “Sense it, Suspect it, See it, Stop it” campaign to encourage crew to not attempt something if it doesn’t feel right.

Paul received his accolade at the awards lunch on 30th of April in front of 1,000 of his peers. He said: “This is a huge and humbling honour and I thank everyone at North Star for their commitment to safety from the chairman to the deckhands on-board.

“The key to improved safety is empowering people and listening. You need to lead and promote a living safety culture, get out of the office, engage with the workforce, look them in the eye, ask them how to improve their safety and then listen to them. People need to know their safety matters.”

North Star Shipping, a division of global shipping and energy services firm Craig Group, operates a fleet of offshore support, ROV survey, tanker assist, and emergency response and rescue vessels which provide 24/7 support to over 50 installations in the North Sea.

Following £250million investment in recent years, the fleet is now one of the most modern operating in the North Sea and the largest British wholly-owned fleet engaged in the UK offshore industry.

North Star has over 1000 seagoing staff and is committed to supporting British Shipping by training in excess of 80 Deck and Engineering Cadets each year via its cadet programme.

Leading marine equipment and services supplier Gael Force Group is further expanding its operations with the purchase of FPM Henderson, one of the UK’s foremost providers of specialist mooring systems and navigation aids. The acquisition which has been in discussion between the two companies over the past 6-month period enables Gael Force to extend its services throughout Scotland, the rest of the UK and support the company’s plans for further Clyde-based growth. It will see the retention of six staff, including industry expert Jock Fleming, a co-founder of FPM Henderson which is located in Yoker, Glasgow.

Earlier this year, Gael Force acquired Forres-based Varis Engineering as part of an ambitious growth drive aimed at building sales from £15 million to £50 million in the next five years, with further growth envisaged longer term. Gael Force Group Managing Director, Stewart Graham, said: “This is a perfect marriage of FPM’s skills and expertise in single point moorings and aids to navigations, and our broader based

mooring and pontoon operations which were recently enhanced by our acquisition of Varis Engineering. We have known Jock Fleming for many years and he has a fine reputation in the industry. We are excited about this new growth and are very much looking forward in working with Jock to deliver an enhanced service to a combined customer base which extends from Plymouth in the South to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. We will be able to provide moorings, pontoons and aids to navigation, all from one trusted supplier. This expansion also fits nicely with our intention to reach a turnover of £50 million within the next five years.”

FPMH Founder Jock Fleming said: “I am delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement with Gael Force to combine our respective skills and experience which I believe will enhance our already excellent services and with the resources of an industry leader such as Gael Force, feel we are in a position to widen the benefits to customers. This is positive news given the tough economic climate and on a personal level will allow me to take a step towards retirement after over 30 years in the industry!.”

Crowley Turns to Future Care for Mariner health ProtectionCrowley Maritime Corporation has entered a partnership with Future Care, Inc. As explained by Crowley, the move is aimed at ensuring that “the company’s active mariners are receiving the best possible health care while at sea.”

Crowley added that Future Care’s “Caring for the Crew” program provides 24-hour medical advice to crew aboard Crowley’s worldwide fleet of vessels.

“Mariners at sea operate in remote and sometimes challenging environments where emergency and routine medical care can be limited. But, Crowley’s partnership with Future Care gives them around the clock emergency access to on-call physicians and nurses 365 days a year. This program is in addition to care that mariners receive from the trained medical care providers aboard all of Crowley’s vessels,” Crowley’s press release read.

“Future Care has dedicated itself to providing the highest quality managed health care services for ill or injured seafarers around the world,” said Christina DeSimone, CEO of Future Care Inc.

In addition to emergency services, Future Care also provides routine consultations and can coordinate shoreside appointments on a global scale. This additional health and wellness program is expected to help keep Crowley crew members working, while reducing Lost Time and OSHA reportable incidents.

“Better management of the medical treatment of mariners helps them return to work as soon as possible and may also allow

alternative work arrangements to keep mariners employed while allowing the company to continue providing best-in-class service to its customers,” said Captain Margaret Reasoner, managing director of Crowley’s marine personnel department.

According to the Maritime Labor Convention, international shipping companies are required to ensure that all seafarers are covered by adequate measures for the protection of their health and that they have access to prompt and adequate medical care whilst working aboard.

The Future Care team consists of nurses, physicians, medical case managers and preferred medical networks. The company assigns a specially trained physician and care manager to monitor and supervise each crewmember’s illness or injury.

FAST-GROWING international subsea inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM) group Harkand is to position a second dive support vessel in the burgeoning North Sea sector after securing a major contract with CNR International (CNRI).

The contract will see Harkand deliver jacket life extension works, IRM scopes and inspection services in the second quarter of 2014 for CNRI’s Ninian South platform and Lyell field, located approximately 150km north-east of the Shetland Islands.

The award will see the state-of-the-art DP2 multi-purpose diving support vessel the Harkand Da Vinci relocate from South Africa where it was operating throughout 2013 under contract to national oil company PetroSA.

Harkand says the transfer of the vessel, which will undergo modification and upgrade work en route so it is ready for North Sea operations on arrival, reflects the rising demand for IRM and light construction services that they are experiencing in the UKCS.

“Harkand has performed extensive and varied subsea scopes over the years for CNR. We are delighted to

Aberdeen-based standby vessel operator Atlantic Offshore Rescue has commissioned a £6 million vessel for a long-term charter with Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd (Nexen).

Thirty new jobs have been created as a result of the new vessel, Ocean Tay, a Class A Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV), which will provide emergency vessel cover for Nexen’s flagship Golden Eagle Area Development in the North Sea. The charter will last a minimum of two years.

Atlantic Offshore Rescue is part of the Atlantic Offshore Group, which is based in Norway. Atlantic Offshore Rescue Ltd employs 350 people (approximately 330 seamen and 20 office-based staff) and provides multi-role offshore and emergency rescue and response vessels for many of the oil majors operating in the North Sea.

John Bryce, managing director of Atlantic Offshore Rescue, said: “This is a significant contract for the company and is one of a number of agreements with major operators, both retained and new clients, which we secured throughout 2013.”

Ocean Tay underwent conversion at Wear Dock & Engineering Co, Sunderland, to become one of a fleet of 12 ERRVs Atlantic Offshore Rescue manages out of Aberdeen. The 63-metre vessel has the capacity to accommodate a crew of 20 people and as a Class A ERRV can rescue in excess of 300 persons.

Mr Bryce continued: “We worked closely with our contracted partners to successfully convert Ocean Tay with the utmost attention over a three month period to meet the needs of Nexen. We are very proud of the outcome.”

Atlantic Offshore Group has invested approximately £300 million in its fleet modernisation programme in the last three years and this is the second of two high-specification ERRVs which the company has commissioned in recent months. The first, Ocean Troll, is the UK’s most powerful emergency response and rescue vessel and is Atlantic Offshore Rescue’s principal relief vessel supporting the fleet in the North Sea. In addition the company has 2 ERRV/TAVs under construction for delivery in 2014 & 2015.

Mr Bryce said: “Sound emergency response is absolutely crucial for all in the oil and gas sector and we aspire to provide the very best vessel support in the North Sea.”

Inclusive of Atlantic Offshore Rescue’s 12 vessels, Atlantic Offshore Group currently operates a fleet of 24 ERRVs and PSVs and manages further PSVs on behalf of third parties.

The Group’s aim is to continue to expand its capabilities within both the Norwegian and British sector of the North Sea and to be able to provide cross-border solutions reflecting the needs of its clients for both ERRVs and PSVs.

Hydrex diver/technicians have done propeller blade cropping on bulk carriers in Spain and France. In Algeciras the four propeller blades of a 170-meter vessel were cropped. A similar operation was carried out on a 229-meter ship during her stay in Dunkirk.

All four blades of the bulker needed to be cropped.

Having developed different procedures for different kinds of damage, Hydrex is equipped and trained to make the best out of a bent or broken propeller. Ideally, the inhouse developed cold straightening technique is used. This procedure enables Hydrex to straighten damaged blades in-water, allowing commercial operations to continue without the need to drydock. In the following examples cropping was the only option as the damage to the propeller blades was too great to allow cold straightening. This kind of repair is carried out with the propeller blade cutting equipment developed by the Hydrex research department. In cases where there is an even number of blades an identical piece will be cropped from

the opposite blade to restore the hydro-dynamic stability of the propeller. By doing so, the best possible efficiency is obtained.

Hydrex technician cropping one of the blades in France

Underwater blade cropping in DunkirkThe four blades of a 229-meter bulk-carrier’s propeller were severely bent. An on-site solution was needed to restore the propeller’s balance and efficiency. A team was therefore mobilized to the ship’s location to restore the damaged blades to as close to their original condition as possible. After the equipment arrived at the vessel’s location the team started the operation with a detailed survey of the affected propeller blades. The inspection revealed that the four blades were bent over angles of up to 90 degrees. The team then used the information acquired during the inspection to calculate and determine the correct measurements needed to modify the trailing edges of the propeller blades. Next the divers cropped the blades and

hydrex performs propeller repairs in Spain and Franceground their edges to give them the correct radius. When the cropping was complete, the Hydrex technicians polished the blades to make sure that any remaining loss of efficiency would be minimal.

Hydrex Diver grinding the edge of one of the cropped blades

Fast propeller operation in AlgecirasThe damage to the blades of the 170-meter ship was less severe. It consisted of cracks, cuts and missing chips on the leading edges of the four blades. Despite the relative size of the affected areas, the uneven surface caused a drop in the performance of the propeller.Cropping all four blades was the only way the bring them back as close to their original condition as possible and optimize the performance of the propeller. The repair was carried out by a Hydrex diver/technician team mobilized from the close-by office in Algeciras following the same procedure as the operation in Dunkirk.

Work has started at the Port of Felixstowe on the latest expansion of the UK’s largest container port.

VSBW Joint Venture, a consortium of VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster, has been appointed as the lead contactor to extend the port’s Berth 9 by 190 metres.

The work will increase the combined lengths of Berths 8 & 9 to 920 metres, giving the port even greater flexibility to

berth the world’s largest container ships.

The Boskalis Westminster dredger, Causeway, began dredging the area in April. The initial dredging is in preparation for construction to begin in the summer. The project will involve dredging 1 million cubic metres of material to provide the berth and approaches, and enable a new steel-piled quay wall to be built.

Commenting on the project, Clemence Cheng, Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited Chief Executive Officer, said: “The scale of operations at the Port of Felixstowe already gives us the ability to berth more large container ships simultaneously than other ports in the UK. The new extension will increase the berthing permutations we can offer and continue to ensure that we turn our customers’ vessels around in the quickest possible time. Felixstowe’s location closest to the main shipping lanes and the ports of Northern

Europe already saves our customers both time and money. Combined with the best road and rail connections to serve the UK, the new extension will further extend our advantage as the port-of-choice for deep-sea container ship operators.” Ian Cussons, VSBW Project Manager said: “We were delighted to secure the contract for the Berth 9 extension at Felixstowe and are ready to mobilise all the necessary resources in the very near future. The tubular pile design is very similar to the existing Berths 8&9 and will be built to allow the water alongside to be dredged to 18 metres depth.”

Piling of the quay wall for the new extension will start later in the summer with construction due to complete in mid 2015. The new extension will be equipped with three new ship-to-shore gantry cranes, each with a 25-container wide outreach.

Kongsberg Maritime Ltd has introduced a series of new on-water training courses for offshore surveyors and survey engineers following the launch of its own chartered vessel, True North.

The vessel will enable Kongsberg Maritime Ltd to introduce a practical element to the courses already offered at its training centre in Westhill, Aberdeen, on the company’s products for the offshore survey industry. True North, which works out of Stonehaven just a few miles from the training centre, will initially support courses on the HiPAP (High Precision Acoustic Positioning) system. The vessel, which has been customised to Kongsberg Maritime’s specifications, will enable delegates to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom. Euan Duncan, training manager at Kongsberg Maritime Ltd, says, “True North will allow us to provide on-water training to consolidate what delegates learn about our products in the classroom.

Kongsberg Maritime to launch on-water offshore survey courses

Operational systems are critical to maintaining an ongoing service, so any down time to allow employees to train in the offshore environment is often financially prohibitive. This new element to our portfolio of training courses allows for a holistic approach in that training can be undertaken in an offshore scenario, something which will be extremely valuable for operators.”

True North has been chartered for one year from McLachlan Marine, which also supplies crew transfer services for

Kongsberg Maritime Ltd’s engineers. The firm has been supplying inshore vessels to the oil and gas industry for a number of years.

True North can accommodate up to a maximum of six delegates at a time, along with an instructor, skipper and mate. The vessel is a Blyth 33 catamaran – 10.11m long and with an operational capability of up to 20 miles offshore.

It has been kitted out to Kongsberg Maritime Ltd’s exact specifications and includes the HiPAP 35P acoustic referencing system; C-PAP 34 ROV positioning system with two transducers; APOS computer system and EA400 single beam echosounder.

The vessel has also been equipped with a sophisticated hoist system for deploying pole-mounted equipment through the deck – the first of its kind in Scotland on a small survey boat.

Whilst debate continues about the most efficient way to serve offshore wind installations further out to sea, CTruk has been quietly forging ahead with a new OWSV designed to safely deal with rougher seas, longer transits and tougher assignments whilst not neglecting the comfort of passengers and crew.

Based on a proven workboat design concept, the CTruk EVOC22 is a 22m composite twin-hull with 7.5m beam and 1.25m draft. This innovative workboat will have a 20 tonne flexible payload capability and the ability to carry 24,000 litres of fuel, an invaluable function in servicing round 3 zones. CTruk’s patented moveable wheelhouse and flexible deck pod system will allow the vessel to fulfil multiple roles; potentially transferring 12 technicians in ultimate comfort one day and removing its passenger pod to make use of 72m² of deck space for equipment transfer the

next, carrying cranes, transfer systems and amphibious rescue vehicles such as the CTruk Avenger.

CTruk’s hard-won experience and dedication to incorporating client feedback is serving the company’s in-house design team well. New features on this vessel include a protected controllable pitch propeller (CPP) system which will give optimal bollard pull and service speeds, significantly increasing the already renowned fuel efficiency of CTruk’s lighter weight composite catamarans and yet still allowing the boat to take the ground and dry out at low water. Various engine options are available and the inclusion of bow thrusters will give greater manoeuvrability.

Designed and built to Bureau Veritas (BV) classification rules, the vessel will join offshore wind solutions provider CWind’s charter fleet, where the increased capacity of this larger OWSV is eagerly awaited.

New CTRUK OWSV design tailored to work further offshore

CWind’s Business Development Director Bruce Clements commented:“The CTruk EVOC22 builds on the versatile design features of the successful CTruk 20T MPC, which has now worked on 13 offshore wind farms and had an outstanding level of availability on contract in the past year. This 22m workboat will take CWind’s fleet forward into the next phase of offshore wind park construction. Our clients will benefit from the craft’s high and flexible payload capacity as well as smooth and comfortable personnel transfers, a factor which takes on greater significance as distance to work increases.”

The first CTruk EVOC22 (EVOC stands for Efficient Versatile Offshore Catamaran) is currently in production at CTruk’s Essex yard and due for delivery in September 2014. Presented to the market with CWind’s proven service package and fleet management experience, she promises to be a game-changer for offshore wind construction, operations and maintenance further out to sea.

The vessel will utilize two 1,500 hp thrustmaster azimuth thrusters model TH1500N, two 1,000 hp Thrustmaster Retractable Azimuth Thrusters Model TH1000RN, and one 1000 hp Thrustmaster carbon steel tunnel thruster model 66TT1000-CS.

According to the Dutch Barge Company, the key feature of the vessel is its modular capability. Able to act individually as a barge and tug, or in combination as a full DP2 vessel, the MPSOV can adapt

to suit many different types of operation. Features include a large deck space, heave-compensated 100-ton crane and four-point mooring plus NORSOK-standard accommodations for up to 74 people in safety and comfort. The vessel’s hull will be built at a Polish shipyard with all fitting out work carried out in the Netherlands.

For over 30 years Thrustmaster has been a leading provider of propulsion systems for use in the offshore, marine, inland waterways and military markets.

“We have a great opportunity to continue with our 30 year track record by providing quality commercial thrusters to the offshore and marine industry that is backed up with a global network of support and service. We couldn’t think of a better venue to finalize the deal with Dutch Barge Company than at the Offshore Technology Conference,” said Thrustmaster’s Marketing Manager Johnray Strickland.

2014 has been shaping up to be a busy year for Thrustmaster – in February the company expanded their product lineup to include water jets after acquiring the technology of DOEN Pacific. DOEN, a leading designer and manufacturer of water jet propulsion systems for the past 48 years, is one of five marine waterjet manufactures in the world building water jets up to 4,000 kW.

Scot Seats launch seat with extra suspension travel

Scot Seats launches a new, long, travel version of its popular jockey seat, providing operators with extra comfort and protection against injury in extreme sea conditions.

The extra suspension travel allows the seat to be run at a softer setting resulting in a more natural initial feel to the suspension stroke, while offering the same resistance to bottoming that would be achieved from a shorter travel seat on a stiffer setting. This is achieved from using a FOX Float shock absorber with an infinitely adjustable progressive air spring. A contender for the 2014 Seawork Spirit of Innovation Award!

IMO decision to move forward with Tier III rules underscores MAN view that pushing technology readiness is right thing to do.

“We are ready for IMO Tier III”, said Dr Stephan Timmermann, MAN Diesel & Turbo Executive Board Member responsible for Marine Systems and After Sales. “We have the technologies in place to support our customers for this new era of environmentally efficient shipping. I am pleased that the adoption of the IMO regulations will save us from mushrooming national regulations. Now we have a clear set of rules”, added Timmermann.

The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Hans-O. Jeske, underpinned its technological readiness: “Exhaust Gas Recirculation and Selective Catalytic Reduction are technologies we not only have available but have operational experience with.”

MAN Diesel & Turbo ready to support Tier lll & maritime age

In this respect, Danish vessel Petunia Seaways is equipped with an MAN SCR system that has reliably operated for 9,000 hours to date and follows the world’s first Tier-III-compliant, two-stroke engine that was built by Hitachi Zosen Corporation in Japan for a general cargo carrier in 2011.

Similarly, the company received its first commercial order for an EGR system, to be applied aboard a 4,500-teu Maersk Line container newbuilding, in 2012. The system will be fully integrated with the vessel’s main two-stroke engine, to be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries’ engine & machinery division.

respectively and give shipowners and operators the option of using either HFO or gas, depending on emission and price parameters.

Experts across all disciplines at MAN reckon that emissions regulation will remain a key driver for maritime technology development. “For MAN Diesel & Turbo, it is important to offer a variety of solutions so that customers can best balance their needs in terms of cost efficiency, environmental efficiency and operational profile”, Jeske explained. “For decades to come, we will see a rivalry of fuels. Versatility will be key. This is why we offer highly efficient, dual-fuel, two- and four-stroke engines, emission-control equipment and highly developed propeller designs.”

“While fuel prices remain high and emissions become ever more stringent, ship owners look for the most efficient

solutions for newbuildings and existing ships”, said Ole Grøne, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales, for MAN’s Low-Speed business unit. “From an environmental point of view, low-sulphur fuels such as methane, natural gas and LNG are highly relevant – all the more reason for us to be pleased with the success of our ME-GI engines.”

While IMO Tier III will come into force for newbuildings from 2016 onwards, already today retrofits can significantly enhance fuel efficiency for existing fleets. “Any percentage point of fuel saving means lower operational costs and lower emissions – it’s a win-win situation”, Grøne concluded.

Today’s marine engine market is divided into two major segments, commercial and recreational. No diesel outboard exists in the market segment of 30 to 52 kW (40 to 70 HP), a segment interesting for commercial use, a segment, which is defined by transport, hauling, commercial fishing and others.

The Neander Shark turbo diesel outboard was developed in this area, having a number of applications in mind - pushing heavy vessels, trawling, or idling for hours - the engine construction is made to last endless hours!

Neander Shark diesel outboard

The use of approved and already developed components secures high endurance and reliability. The Neander Shark won’t let you down after thousands of hours of operation (service according plan required) and start its work every day like the first day. This ensures reliability and performance after years on the water.

The Neander technology is based on the actual developments of modern combustion engines. The engines ‘World Premiere’ is the use of the double crankshaft. This design principle allows powerful, efficient, light and compact engine construction and an engine running with next to zero vibrations. The Neander Shark was consequently developed for the challenges of the commercial boating industry. www.neander-shark.com

Devon-based WaterMota is a distributor for some of the world’s leading marine and industrial engine manufacturers and equipment and is one of the UK’s oldest engineering companies having first opened its doors in 1911.

Today the company, headed by Mike Beacham, supplies a comprehensive range of propulsion equipment suitable for all types of leisure and commercial vessels as well as industrial applications and has a dealer network covering the whole of the UK and Ireland offering installations and service.

The company’s product portfolio includes marine heat exchanger/keel-cooled propulsion and auxiliary engines, reversing gearboxes, power take-offs, generating sets, custom-built power packs, seawater pumps, strainers, steering systems, bow and stern thrusters and most engine room installation fittings and accessories.

One of its key product ranges is the Doosan range of heavy-duty propulsion engines and auxiliaries, known for their reliability and low fuel consumption and popular in a wide range of markets where it’s important to be able to repair or replace parts easily.

The engines are available from 6 to 22 litres, (180bhp / 132kW to 1,200bhp / 883kW) and are particularly popular in workboats, tugs and fishing vessels.

One customer with a fleet of six vessels all fitted with Doosan engines is Meridian Salmon Farms, located in the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland. The latest is the newly launched landing craft Sea Chelle, built to work in the Scapa Flow area. Designed as a general site boat for the salmon cages for tasks including feeding and assisting with net changing with feed

One of the UK’s oldest engineering companies distributed to the salmon sites via multiple boat trips, Sea Chelle is powered by a twin L136 Doosan propulsion system. With a top speed of almost 9 knots and a general working speed of 7 knots, Sea Chelle is also able to operate at slow or idle speeds for long periods of time.

“Doosan engines are known for their reliability and are suitable for a range of vessels,” said Tony Fryer, WaterMota sales manager. “They are particularly prevalent in workboats and once owners fit Doosan engines in one vessel, like Meridian Salmon Farms, often re-engine the rest of their fleet with them when replacement becomes necessary.”

“We’re very pleased with the Doosan engines,” added Iain Shields, engineering and logistical coordinator, Meridian Salmon Farms. “We’ve chosen them because of their reliability. They have good torque and power output and fit all our needs. They’re also very cost-effective which is another advantage.”

The Doosan engines are also favoured by UK steel workboat manufacturer, Meercat Workboats, with 20 pairs supplied. The latest Meercat to be launched, powered by twin Doosan L086TIHs providing 570hp is the 18m by 8m RT18 also features a completely re-designed wheelhouse to allow for improved visibility all round.

“We have the experience and expertise to ensure marine installations are a success,” explained Mr Beacham. “Our turnover has increased considerably over the past five years. We want to maintain this growth and continue expanding into the wind farm and industrial markets.”

WaterMota also supplies Craftsman Marine, D-I gearboxes and PTOs, Hyundai SeasAll diesel engines, JMP and Azcue pumps.

Mermaid Marine is one of the UK’s leading marine diesel engine and generator marinisers and distributors.

The company, based on the South Coast, offers a range of heat exchanger / keel cooled marine diesel propulsion and auxiliary engines up to 825hp which are suitable for a variety of applications including fishing boats, narrowboats, ferries, tugs, pleasure boats, charter and workboats.

Among the engines on offer are the J-444 (JCB) marine engines marinised by Mermaid, which are based on the JCB Dieselmax 444 turbocharged and intercooled engine.

JCB has worked closely with leading suppliers of parts and equipment to produce engines which have high power and high torque at low speed with favourable fuel consumption and clean emissions.

Billed as the fastest and cleanest diesel engine range in the world, the engine reaches Stage IIIB – Tier 4 interim – anti pollution standards without any particle filters or after-treatment of exhaust gases.

“JCB has invested many millions of Euros into developing its new combustion system,” Mermaid Marine sales executive Malcolm Pratt explained. “It’s probably the cleanest engine on the market with no after treatment needed for the exhaust which is a big advantage.”

A four-cylinder range is available from 55kW to 129kW with scope for a six-cylinder range using JCB’s newly launched six-cylinder industrial engine.

Other engines available from Mermaid Marine include AGCO Power (SISU) heavy duty engine, FPT and FNM.

Mermaid Marine is the UK’s leading mariniser

AGCO Power’s engines are built at the company’s main factory in Finland and comply with IMO 2 emission regulations and are future proofed for the forthcoming IMO 3 legislation.

The engines – available in four and six cylinder - are unique in the marketplace as they are the only common rail engines available approved to run on 100% biodiesel with no compromise in performance.

And as well as sales of marine diesel engines, Mermaid Marine has large stocks of parts, spares and accessories and offers field servicing and repair and general overhaul of diesel engines and generators such as for South Coast Port Services (SCPS).

Mermaid Marine has been servicing and maintaining the engines on board the company’s five workboats for the last 15 years ensuring there are no breakdowns and all the requirements of SCPS are met.

“Mermaid Marine provides us with an excellent service and are able to attend to any service issues within 24 hours,” explained SCPS director Martin Eardley. “It’s imperative to SCPS that four out of five of our launches are available on a 24/7 basis to meet the requirements of this very busy port.”

The engines in question are an FPT N67 280 (de-rated), Mermaid Melody based on a four cylinder Ford block and three Mermaid Mariner engines based on six cylinder Ford blocks.

These have been reconditioned over the years by Mermaid Marine under its monthly contract with an upgrade to the FPT engine, replacing an old Ford, earlier this year.

“It’s usual for us to have one launch in refit for three or four months of the year,” said Mr Eardley.

Lankhorst Ropes has introduced a colour-coded rope marker to its Tipto® Twelve mooring rope range, enabling crew to identify a rope’s size through visual inspection alone. The marker is designed to ensure the correct size of rope is used or bought, lowering the chance of error in mooring operations and saving operators from inadvertently buying the wrong rope.

Selecting the wrong mooring or towing rope can have serious consequences for crew, dockworkers and other vessels. In a multi-line mooring system each position on a vessel will have a specific rope that should be used.

Rope diameters may differ by only a few mm, yet provide significant differences in minimum breaking force (MBF), and so using the correct rope is critical.

When purchasing a new rope, crew can often rely on visually estimating the rope size, if rope certificates are not immediately to hand, significantly increasing the risk of buying the wrong rope.

In addition to the orange marker yarn, the Tipto® Twelve rope include an additional marker showing the size of rope:

Ø 32 mm = Green marker 177 MBF (kN)

Ø 36 mm = Brown marker 222 MBF (kN)

Ø 40 mm = Black marker 269 MBF (kN)

Ø 44 mm = Blue marker 321 MBF (kN)

Ø 48 mm = White marker 378 MBF (kN).

As the table shows a difference of just 4mm in diameter has a significant effect on the minimum breaking force of between 45 kN and 57 kN.

In the event a different rope (with a lower MBF) is chosen in error this line will bear a larger mooring load, instead of the load being spread, as intended, between several ropes. As a result the risk of this rope snapping is greatly increased.

ShoreTension®, a revolutionary vessel mooring system, is helping the marine industry to address the global challenges of energy conservation, improving ships’ safety and the continuous need to reduce down-time of available terminals. The ShoreTension® system uses ropes made with Dyneema® SK78 fiber from DSM to ensure permanent tension, even in extreme conditions.

ShoreTension® is a stand-alone hydraulically controlled mooring system, designed to absorb the energy of the moving ship in a gust of wind and store this internally whilst paying out the mooring lines. When the peak loads are over, the system heaves in the lines with the energy stored, returning to its initial position. The system does not require any external energy, thus providing an effective and sustainable mooring solution.

Partnership and performance are drivers of revolutionary ShoreTension®

mooring solutionTo demonstrate its reliability, the ShoreTension® system has undergone extensive tests after it was introduced to a number of end-users at various ports around the world, such as Rotterdam, Sines and Cotonou. These were all completed successfully.

The four-way partnership between ShoreTension BV, Hoenderop BV, Gleistein Ropes and DSM Dyneema BV provided a significant contribution to the success of the ShoreTension® vessel mooring system.

At the heart of the system are ‘MegaTwin Dyneema® HS Dyneema® SSC’ lines produced by Geo Gleistein & Sohn GmbH. Their load bearing cores are made with Dyneema® SK78 fiber from DSM, setting a new standard in the design of light, strong and stiff mooring lines.

35

A new “snake skin cover” was developed with Dyneema® by Gleistein Ropes to help protect the load bearing core during its use, thus mitigating the risk of premature line failure, while extending the ropes’ lifetime, saving on replacement cost and reducing environmental impact.

Gert van den Burg of ShoreTension B.V. explains: “Whereas with conventional mooring ropes, most of the tension is transferred to the ship, in the new system the tension is transferred to the ShoreTension® unit, located onshore. Because of the exceptional demands of the system, mooring lines need to be durable, light and strong, with little or no stretch. Mooring lines made with Dyneema® can meet these demands given the properties of the fiber used and their proven value for mooring of VLCC’s, LNG carriers and cruise lines for many years.”

To address the unique needs of the system, Gleistein Ropes and DSM Dyneema B.V. provided a dedicated principal-based system approach at the full-scale ShoreTension test facility in Vlaardingen. Gert van den Burg: “A partnership can only be successful if all participants deliver high levels of commitment, dedication and focus. Gleistein Ropes and DSM Dyneema continue to meet our expectations to the full.”

DSM Dyneema President Gerard de Reuver said: “The ShoreTension System offers exciting perspectives for the

shipping industry in terms of safety and productivity. Moreover, the system also addresses the global challenges of energy conservation and pollution control, which we face as a society. At DSM we are delighted to be able to apply our Bright Science for projects such as these.”

Mooring ropes made with Dyneema® fiber are 7 times stronger than steel, which makes them strong enough to take the highest loads. They are lightweight yet smooth and easy to handle. Ropes made with Dyneema® are also safer – there is no danger of backlash or snaking in the unlikely event of a rope break and they last at least twice as long as steel and other synthetic ropes.

Pool TWM anchor from Saxton MarineA recent addition to the Saxton Marine range is the Pool TWM High Holding Power [HHP] anchors which are made of welded high tensile steel plate material and will reduce weight by up to 25%.

The manufacturers, SEC Pool, placed the side skirts so as to reinforce the anchor’s flukes thus taking away strains on welds. The improved stopperplate, welded between the two side plates, helps to improve contact with the ships hull.

This anchor design has been granted a Dutch patent and also the European patent. Lloyd’s Register, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd, RINA and Det Norkse Veritas have all given type approval.

No other Anchors compare with Fortress, the best value in anchoring safety and convenienceIn test after test, from coast to coast and from around the world, no anchor in history has been called “The World’s Best Anchor” by more boaters and respected marine experts than Fortress ... and for good reason.

Years of research and development, high-tech materials and manufacturing, and thousands of real world tests are your assurance of performance, quality and value. Fortress weighs only half as much as heavier steel anchors and yet outperforms them all.

All Fortress Anchors feature Mud Palms designed to help the anchor set faster in any type of sea bottom. Mud Palms create a “lift” to the crown of the anchor, causing the flukes to point more directly to the seabed. This helps the anchor set faster ... in any bottom.

Blyth Workcasts of Canvey Island, UK have supplied a new 11-metre dive boat to the Mevagh Dive Centre for use in the Western Atlantic off County Donegal, Ireland, The catamaran, is named the Laura Dean, has now been delivered. It will now work transporting groups of up to 12 recreational divers to dive sites in the region, many of which include the wrecks of ships sunk along the Irish coast.

The boat is powered by two Iveco N67 420 hp engines each driving a five-bladed propeller through a twin disc gearbox. These enable the boat to achieve speeds up to 23-knots or to cruise economically at 18-knots when it is expected to consume just 45 litres of fuel per hour. This is made possible by minimising unnecessary weight while retaining strength and by the design of the turquoise-coloured Blyth Workcats hull. This has been developed to provide optimal performance through the water while also maintaining the company’s reputation for tough reliability and exceptional sea-keeping in extreme conditions. These features are seen as important benefits for the Dive Centre’s customers and the boat will consequently receive

Accommodation for passengers and crew consists of a wheelhouse and a small saloon seating area with a toilet and galley facilities. The bright orange wheelhouse roof will extend for 8-feet over the after deck where there will be fold-down stainless steel seating along each side and bench seating in the centre and racks fitted for carrying divers’ air cylinders. An important feature for the dive centre’s customers will be a hydraulic dive lift mounted on the transom. Access will be through a transom gate leading directly onto the after deck to ensure the easy deployment and recovery of divers.

The Mevagh Dive Centre is located near Letterkenny in County Donegal. The business has grown steadily since it was established in 2004 and the new Blyth Workcat will be an integral part of its ongoing expansion. Operating out of Downings, the new boat will offer diving and angling excursions as well as providing sea safaris along the Atlantic coast. Mevagh Dive Centre also has a purpose-built, heated sea water pool and supports the full range of PADI scuba dive courses. There is also bed and breakfast accommodation available at the centre.

The 11-metre Blyth Workcat was chosen by the Mevagh Dive Centre from a range consisting of 10, 11, 12, 14 and 17-metre catamarans that are built for all types of marine work.

This includes wind farm support, surveying, passenger ferry, fishing charter or any other workboat tasks that require high performance and good sea-keeping combined with stability and extensive load carrying capability. All are built from GRP to offer important advantages over metal hulled boats such as lower running costs and a much lower initial outlay when buying the vessels. GRP boats also keep their good looks for longer and can also be built to provide strength where it is needed and valuable weight savings wherever the design permits it. The strength yet comparatively light weight of a Blyth Workcats GRP hull also enables smaller engines to be used. This results in greater economy and higher speeds which, due to carefully designed hull profiles and chines, improve handling and sea-keeping in extreme conditions. Hull lamination and construction is governed by meticulous quality control so the customer can benefit from a boat that has been built to exactly meet their requirements while enabling rugged strength and reinforcement to be applied where it is needed.

Expert autopilot for the entry-level workboat

Entry-level commercial workboats can enjoy the same comprehensive features as the rest of the pack with Simrad’s AP60 Professional Autopilot. Joining Simrad Professional Series’ AP70 and the award-winning AP80, this versatile unit provides the ultimate vessel heading control and network integration to handle the challenging environments and unique requirements of the smaller-scale workboat.

Commercial marine professionals at all levels can now access a wide range of features designed to make piloting commercial vessels more efficient. The cost-effective AP60 system strikes a balance between performance and price to open up professional pilot features to a wider range of commercial workboat customers.

Professional approach

Unlike many other entry-level autopilots, the AP60 includes thruster integration for improved low speed manoeuvring – ideal whether positioning the vessel for trawling or negotiating a narrow channel. It’s also compatible with an extensive range of Simrad autopilot controllers and accessories, so your existing set-up need not be compromised or extended to accommodate it.

The Simrad AP60 takes its inspiration from the proven user interface of the AP70 and 80 and, as such, is familiar to use and incredibly easy to set up. It has a wide range of features designed to make piloting commercial vessels more efficient, accessed via clear and intuitive menu systems, plus a large, high contrast, monochrome LCD screen for clear display of critical information, a rotary

course control wheel, dedicated work modes and Auto and Standby buttons – enabling simple performance selection guided by your task at sea.

With two user-configurable profiles, WORK and NORMAL, the parameters can be customised to suit individual vessel needs and specific operations such as trawling or towing; switch between these profiles with one press of a button. The AP60 also includes NoDrift steering, thruster integration and turn patterns such as U-Turn and S-Turn, features you wouldn’t expect to find in an entry-level Autopilot.

Any vessel steering

The Simrad Professional autopilot series prides itself on flexibility and the ability to customise a solution to steer any vessel. The control unit can be used in isolation as well as part of a multi-station system, or alongside a wide range of remote controls. The AP60 is also compatible with the most comprehensive range of Simrad autopilot computers, interface boxes, heading sensors and rudder feedback units, seamlessly integrating with and instantly upgrading your system.

This unit brings professional features to all classes of workboat – both leisure and commercial vessels - and is backed by the Simrad Advantage Service programme, for the reassurance of 7 years of worldwide product support, wherever your business takes you.

Dometic Marine faced two key challenges when designing an HVAC system for a number of 135-ft. patrol boats.

The Challenges:

● The ships would patrol waters in the Middle East, a region with very high air and water temperatures – a significant problem as seawater acts as a coolant in marine HVAC systems.

● The HVAC system had to fit very tight space allowances.

The Solutions:

The builder chose Dometic Marine because of the following uniquely engineered solutions:

● To overcome the high-temperature challenge, Dometic engineers designed a custom chiller with boosted capacity by putting 10-ton condensing coils on each of the 7.5-ton modules.

Overcoming extreme temperatures and tight installation spaces

● To conquer the space limitations, Dometic Marine engineers designed the chiller to produce the required capacity in the small space available in the engine room.

In addition, slim-profile ATV air handlers were installed to accommodate the ship’s interior areas.

The Result:

The MCG 270,000 BTU/hr (22.5-ton) three-stage chiller with on-board electronics.

Rolls-Royce wins heyerdahl Award 2014Rolls-Royce has been awarded the maritime Heyerdahl Award 2014. The award was presented by His Majesty King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Associations Annual Conference in Oslo 31 March.

The award goes to the Environship Concept, an innovative ship design which integrates a highly efficient gas-based power and propulsion system with an innovative hull design to provide significant reductions in emissions.

The expert committee, chaired by Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Peter Hincliffe, said in its reasoning that Rolls-Royce had taken a holistic approach to vessel design and has succeeded in combining a number of innovative solutions that increase energy efficiency and contribute to significant reductions in emissions. The committee emphasized that the measures are adaptable for a broad range of ship types and have the potential to reduce emissions from many segments of the worldwide fleet.

Helge Vatnehol, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Marine AS in Norway, received the award on behalf of Rolls-Royce: “We strongly believe that to succeed in making emissions reductions, several types of environmental technologies have to be combined. This is the basic idea behind our Environship concept and it is therefore a great pleasure and very inspiring to receive this recognition.”

Helge Vatnehol used the opportunity to send a special thank you to the Norwegian ship owners: “We are fortunate to be part of a maritime cluster with ship owners that are global frontrunners

when it comes to investing in new and more environmentally friendly technology. Our customers push forward on innovation every day.”The Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award was launched in 1999 by Thor Heyerdahl (1914 - 2002) and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association. The prize recognizes candidates who have demonstrated exceptional technical innovation and environmental work in keeping with Thor Heyerdahl’s desire to promote the conservation of the marine environment. Emphasis is placed on measures that combine environmental benefits with improved profitability. The Norwegian Shipownwers’ Association (NSA) holds the secretariat for the award.

“With the Heyerdahl Award we want to acknowledge those who do more than required by rules and regulations. We also want to make visible the industry’s ideas and solutions to what are by far the biggest challenges of our time - energy efficiency and the environment” said Chief Executive Officer of the NSA, Sturla Henriksen.

Markleen launches the new Seamaster boom

Markleen has developed the latest technology on self-inflatable containment booms: The Seamaster Boom

The Seamaster is the latest generation of highly resistant self-inflatable booms. On the new version of the Seamaster, conventional valves have been replaced by an automatic air intake and expulsion mechanism which makes it the market’s fastest and most reliable boom to deploy. This, when combined with the introduction of an improved integral spring system and its exclusive reinforced floatation, makes the SEAMASTER boom unsinkable.

The boom is manufactured from a PU-PVC blend, giving the boom excellent resistance and wave-following characteristics and making it suitable for use in the harshest of environments.

The Uniboom Seamaster has been successfully deployed at a number of different scenarios and has been recently chosen by the ADPC (Abu Dhabi Ports Company) to protect its ports against possible oil spills.

MoD Approved for damage control and pipe repair

Repair any pipeFAST with the proven PIPE REPAIR SYSTEM. Restore product flow and profit flow in minutes. Prevent environmental

contamination! Use for permanent repair or to extend the service life of piping

NORAB Feb 2014.qxp_Layout 1 20/02/2014 15:28 Page 1

STOP IT® Pipe Repair System is ideal for repairing pipe leaks, reinforcing pipe joints, rebuilding thinning pipe walls and corrosion proofing - in virtually any situation, even underwater! It fully cures to a hard, durable repair in 30 minutes. It can be used for permanent repair to pipes or to extend the service life of piping.

The STOP IT® Pipe Repair System includes a strong knitted fiberglass tape coated with fast setting urethane resins that are water-activated. The system also includes FIX STIX ™, a steel-filled moldable epoxy that sets rock hard in only 20 minutes. It is perfect for plugging leaks, filling cracks and complex voids and offsets at couplings and fittings. Using the STOP IT® urethane rich fiberglass tape in combination with FIX STIX™ greatly increases repair capacity. One person, with no special tools and no hot work can apply this quick in-field repair system in minutes. The tape is supplied in its own tub in a hermetically secured pouch with the resin already impregnated, a pair of rubber globes and a plug of epoxy putting, along with an instruction manual showing step by step application of the tape. All that is required for the tape to work is to dunk it in water for 5 seconds, as the water is the catalyst required to activate the resin. In most of the manufacturing industries STOP IT® Repair Tape is used as a temporary repair until the shutdown maintenance period arrives. In some cases, however, the product has been left as permanent. For the water industry, knowing of its leakage problems, Stop-it can be used as a permanent repair, depending on the engineer in charge.

Whether you are repairing a chemical process line or any other critical pipeline, the STOP IT® Pipe Repair System is your money saving ally in the battle against lost production costs in common situations. Under certain conditions an active gravity-flow leak (about 15 psi or less) from a pinhole may be repaired without shutting down.
