Page 1: MAGAZINE ANALYSIS Kerrang!

There are a lot of different colours on this front cover which are: Red, White and Blue with bold black for the main cover lines. These colours make the text stand out very well from the white background which means that the text would be visible from a distance on a shelf. These colours also fit in with the main image which overall makes this front cover work very well to catch the eye of their target audience.

The main image of Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams is positioned in front on the masthead of Kerrang! This could be because Kerrang! Have been

going for a while now that the reader would recognise this straight away as being Kerrang! Their masthead is iconic. Some of the cover lines are bolder and different colours so they are more eye catching which works well with the main image. This is because Hayley Williams looks like she is shouting and the way the cover lines are slightly angled it looks like she is shouting them out. Also with the masthead it looks like it is shattering from a loud noise which, fits in with the main image too because she looks like she is shouting which is clever.

The main image is related to the main cover line story because Hayley Williams who is positioned in the centre of the page is the lead singer of Paramore which the main story is about. She also fits in with the target audience because Paramore fans are mostly teenagers who remember their early days of pop punk. This magazine is a special edition to celebrate 10 years of their first album All We Know Is Falling.

There are some cover mounts at the top of the page advertising the 6 free posters that come with issue. These posters are usually of bands that teenagers would like and so they would want to buy the magazine. This front cover has been bled to the edge of the page to give it a better look.

CONTENTS PAGE:

The contents page of this magazine has a rock grunge feel to it because the main colours are black and white but there is also a border which relates to skate parks and other places where the reader hangs

around in their spare time. The subheading is in yellow which makes it stand out against the white and the black.

There is one main image that takes up most of the page and it has the name of the band ‘Neck Deep’ and the page to find the story that includes them. Then on the right hand side of the page there is a contents section with a main body of text that shows the reader what is coming up in the magazine and what pages to find the stories on. There is also a picture of the front cover and below that are the stories that were on it. Some of the names of the people in bands are in bold so if the reader likes that particular band and they want to go straight to that page then it stands out to them. The main image on this contents page is of the lead singer of Neck Deep who are an up and coming band so many teenagers have heard of them. Then there is a picture of the editor and Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters in the editors section so the reader can see that he knows what he is talking about and that he likes bands too. In this main image the Neck Deep lead singer is jumping off a skateboard which fits in with the target audience because they might like skateboarding in their free time. It is like a grunge thing to do.

The heading ‘Contents’ is in bold with little drawings around it which fit in with the grunge target audience. The colours are quite bland apart from the yellow which stands out on the main subheadings. The content is easy to see at a glance.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD:

The colours of this double page spread are white and red. These colours have been chosen because in the picture which covers up one whole page Hayley Williams has red hair and is wearing red clothes. This all

Page 3: MAGAZINE ANALYSIS Kerrang!

also fits in with the front cover image because she has red hair there as well. This creates a bright and happy mood because it is a celebration of the bands 10 years of existing.

They have designed this page so that the picture of Hayley Williams covers up one whole page and there is loads of text on the page before. There are drop caps to start off new paragraphs which is eye catching. There are also interview parts as well and the name of the people saying what are in bold. There is also a main quote in the middle of the page from Hayley Williams that has been picked out of the interview. There is then a small image underneath the text of the band in 2005 which is what they used to look like. Some readers may remember this, if not then they can see what they used to look like. At the bottom of this page is more text about the old music videos to popular songs that the reader may remember.

The image of Hayley is against a white background and because she is wearing red she stands out more and is eye catching. And the other image fits in with the main story. These pictures represent the band which is what the main story is about. The pose of Hayley Williams is her looking away from the camera and she looks like she is going to rip her hair out and is gritting her teeth. This is because she is an emo and it fits in with the genre of the band as they were then. She was a teen who didn’t really care and was quite messy and grunge. The other image shows the style of the band as they were in 2005.

The text is white on a red background which makes it stand out. The font is also sans serif and is spaced out which makes it easy to read. The size and layout of this page makes it easy to read. This is a special edition magazine for Paramore so it is easy to

Page 4: MAGAZINE ANALYSIS Kerrang!

read. The language is easy to read but it doesn’t stand out much. It is mostly and interview that has been broken up into sections.

The overall impression of this double page spread is that it is effectively eye catching and it fits in with the special edition magazine and the target audience because most people have heard of this band. This band my not be to everyone’s taste but it might attract more readers because they may have just seen this magazine from the shelf because it had Hayley Williams on and they like Paramore.
