In the late 1940s, shortly after the end of the Second World War,
conditions in Denmark were ideally suited to success in design. The
emphasis was on furniture but architecture, silver, ceramics, glass
and textiles also benefitted from the trend. Denmark's late
industrialisation combined with a tradition of high-quality
craftsmanship formed the basis of gradual progress towards
industrial production.
The newly established Furniture School at the Royal Danish
Academy of Art played a considerable part in the development of
furniture design. Kaare Klint taught functionalism based on the size
and proportions of objects, wielding considerable influence. Hans J.
Wegner, who had been trained as a cabinetmaker.

THEKITCHEN
NORDICManifesto for the Nordic KitchenAs Nordic chefs we find that the time has now come for us to create a New
Nordic Kitchen, which in virtue of its good taste and special character compares
favourable with the standard of the greatest kitchens of the world.
The aims of New Nordic Cuisine are:01. To express the purity, freshness, simplicity and ethics we wish to associate
with our region.
02. To reflect the changing of the seasons in the meals we make.
03. To base our cooking on ingredients and produce whose characteristics are
particularly excellent in our climates, landscapes and waters.
04. To combine the demand for good taste with modern knowledge of health and
well-being.
05. To develop potentially new applications of traditional Nordic food products.

Austra is a Canadian electronic
band from Toronto, Ontario, formed
in 2009. The band consists of Katie
Stelmanis (vocals, keyboards), her
former Galaxy bandmate Maya
Postepski (drums) and former
Spiral Beach bassist Dorian Wolf.
They played a number of early
shows under the name Private Life
before learning that another band
was already using the name; they
subsequently named the band after
Stelmanis' middle name Austra,
which is also the name of the
goddess of light in Latvian
mythology. Austra's touring lineup
includes twin backing singers Sari
and Romy Lightman of
Tasseomancy and Ryan Wonsiak of
Ze and the Boyfriends.
What are you going to see and do in Copenhagen? Where are you going to eat out and how are you going to get around? The electronic version of Copenhagen This Week lets you plan in advance from the comfort of your own home.
