Dylan Thompson, Derek Washbrook, Jackson Adams, Hugh Finemore, Levi Goldspink, Kerrie Ward, Rebecca Sciberras, Dylan Gray and Kurt Williams had a wonderful time in this beautiful setting. Thanks to staff from Red Hill Environmental Centre who provided a great camp with good food and plenty of it. The children learnt to erect their own tents, keeping things neat and tidy, they learnt several different team games where the object was to help each other and not think only of winning for yourself. They had instruction on how to paddle a canoe properly, which strokes to use to get to where you are going, how to turn and how to work as a team. A soccer game with the canoes was a fun experience with a lot of splashing and little bit of cheating going on. Students helped prepare dinner and had the job of chopping the vegetables ready for the camp oven, after a delicious roast lamb dinner we all headed off for a night time bush walk where we saw the possums just coming out of their daytime hideouts. We walked to Platypus Point and observed the night sky and the peace and calm of the river. Next morning was another bush walk with several significant Aboriginal sites to have a look at then a big canoe up the Cudgegong River right up to the weir and back again. Then it was pack-up time with the tents cleaned out and folded up and all the rubbish removed. Captain Levi and Vice-Captain Hugh made a speech of thanks to the Red Hill staff and everyone shook hands. As a major part of this year’s school plan, we have made a commitment to ensuring that we educate all students, even those students who don’t naturally fit in comfortably with a traditional school setting. We have started the year by examining the various interests and requirements of our students and made a conscious effort to accommodate these with such programs as Duke of Edinburgh, the gifted and talented I-extend program, school to work classes, boys and girls education and student volunteering program, so that all students are enthusiastic about attending school. Similarly, we are looking at ensuring that we accommodate for all students in the classroom. On Saturday, staff embarked on a three day professional learning experience analysing the various learning styles that people have. The basic theory behind this is that people are either analytic learners or holistic learners (or a combination of both). Some of the characteristics and preferences of both types of learners include: Analytic learners – • Like to focus on tasks and details • Prefer information presented directly through instruction • Provide information in a sequentially organised format. • For the teacher to be a resource for with expertise in the content area • To provide outlines and specifics • To be tested and graded on details and facts • To be left undisturbed and uninterrupted in their thinking process. Holistic/Global learners prefer – • To focus on personal needs and feelings • To have “hands-on” learning, related to personal experiences • To be provided with overviews and the big picture • To have summaries • To have guidance and personal interaction with the teacher • To be tested and graded on general concepts and personal effort • To have fun and be allowed to socialise during the learning process.

We spent some of Saturday looking at the theory behind this and the characteristics of holistic and analytic learners. From surveys that we had completed, we were given statistics on where we were on the spectrum. This enabled us to do two things, firstly look specifically at what our preferred learning styles are and secondly, see how we compare to others in the group and the group as a whole. The plan is that we take this from an interesting activity to a useful program that makes a positive impact on teaching and learning at MCS. It will continue by having all students at the school complete an online survey. This will enable staff to analyse our students individually and as part of a class and determine the preferred learning style of each different cohort (this will occur during the staff development day at the beginning of Term Two). We can then analyse our approach to classroom teaching and ensure that this is appropriate to our students.

I thank all staff and parent participant(s) for their commitment shown by attending a staff development day on weekend. I look forward to using the information learnt on the day to better deliver curriculum to our individual students.
