DaviD ShEphERDDavid Shepherd, CBE, lives in Hammerwood, East Grinstead.

He’s known internationally as one of the world’s leading wildlife artists.

Throughout his career he has therefore tried to do all he can to repay the enormous debt he feels he owes wildlife.

In 1984 he established the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to channel his own conservation efforts that continue to make a real difference to wildlife.

David is perhaps lesser known for his portraits, which include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

His life as an artist and conservationist has featured in many TV programmes, including the BBC’s ‘This is Your Life’ (1990).

David celebrates his 80th birthday in April and will be marking the occasion with a fundraising dinner at the Natural History Museum hosted by Michael Parkinson on 6th May 2011.

1. What do you like most about what you do? Cole’s Estate agents, a new business with historic roots in East Grinstead

cole’s is a recently established Estate agency which celebrated its launch in september 2010.

Matthew Cole, Partner, has lived most of his life in East Grinstead. His family have lived in the town for generations, so far back in fact that knowledge of his first East Grinsteadian ancestors have been lost to history.

Matthew’s maternal great grandfathers were familiar figures

in the town, one of whom having his own coal merchant business, Whites, on Railway Approach - see picture. The other being the first caretaker of the newly built Grammar School (now Imberhorne Lower School) after serving in the Navy during the Great War. His great-grandmother, grandmother and great-aunt were all lucky survivors of the ‘The Whitehall’ cinema bombing during the Second World War.

By opening Cole’s Estate Agents, Matthew, joined by his wife Victoria, are the next family generation to open a business in the town thereby showing the same confidence in the town’s future as his forbears.

our family lives in East Grinstead, myself, adam, my wife Cinzia, and our 2 boys, James 7 and Thomas 4. although a happy and determined little boy, Thomas suffers from Spastic Diplegia Cerebral palsy.

His condition means that his muscles are extremely stiff, and he cannot walk properly, run, etc. Cerebral palsy is incurable, and in this country is treated with a series of painful operations on his legs, and possibly his hips whilst he grows up. As he gets older and heavier, his muscles will not be able to cope, which may very well result in him becoming wheelchair bound.

Thomas has been accepted for an operation which is performed in St Louis in the USA, which would permanently release the spasticity in Thomas’s legs, and allow him to walk properly, and even run, as well as do all the other things that children take for granted. To help pay for this life changing procedure, we’ve set up the Hope 4 Thomas Fund to try and raise the £45,000 needed by June.

Numerous fundraising events have been arranged to help us to reach our target and we’ve had lots of help & support so far.

Here are some organised events (more listed on our website):

Saturday 19th March. Thomas’ Quiz Night, at Sackville School, Main Hall, East Grinstead. Tickets are £10 per person and include a fish and chip meal. You can bring your own drink, and there will also be a luxury raffle in aid of Hope 4 Thomas.

Saturday 16th april. Fundraising Abseil, 28 Dignwall Road, Croydon. Anyone interested in being sponsored to abseil this 10 storey building should contact us. Be daring, be caring. It’s an easy train journey or drive up to Croydon

Wednesday 20th april. Thomas’ Curry Night at Nizam Restaurant, East Grinstead. A buffet will be served between 6.30pm and 11pm for only £15 per

head, with £10 per person going directly to Hope 4 Thomas. Come and enjoy a lovely meal whilst making a significant contribution to Hope 4 Thomas.

Saturday 14th May. Thomas’ May Ball, with Grand Auction. Tickets are £50 per head and include a champagne reception, 3 course meal, half a bottle of wine per person, and entertainment. The Grand Auction includes such fabulous prizes as Take That tickets, England football tickets, Airline flights, Derren Brown tickets, various hotel breaks, and more. All will go to the highest bidder on the night. The hotel has also kindly offered a discounted rate on their rooms to our guests.

We are looking for people, or businesses, to attend these events, to donate, either directly to Thomas’ fund or items for auction or raffle.

What tips do East Grinstead businesses have?

Since November 16th when the Royal engagement was announced the whole world has gone “Kate & Wills” mad. Just one random statistic that I recently came across: “708% increase in London searches from the Netherlands following the royal wedding announcement”.

From Chinese factories going into mass production of Royal Wedding souvenirs to America where a film is being made about their romance, we simply can’t get enough.

We asked several East Grinstead based businesses who provide wedding services what tips they would give the happy couple on their big day, given the chance.

Kate should wear something very simple and fitted to just below the hip line. Sleeves are an absolute must for any royal bride and are coming back into fashion. I always say to girls they must go for the dream dress and not for the one which suits the venue or type of wedding or to please others. Don’t have any regrets about your dress after the big day, but look back at it and love it as much as you did on the day.

Stay true to your style and have the big meringue or the slim fitted number, it’s the one day in your life you can truly wear the dress of your dreams. See advert on page 31.

Make sure your bridal shoes fit you well and are comfortable, if you can ‘wear them in’ before the big day it is a good idea.

Cheap is not always best. With today’s digital cameras there are plenty of friends and uncle’s that may offer to do your wedding photography for you.
