As I flip over my desk calendar to February, I can’t help but feel giddy at the promise of love and romance soon to fill the air. All of a sudden, I’m humming “All you need is love”.

For this month of love, AWSUM will be jumping on the romantic bandwagon. Get ready for us to spoil you with a delicious dessert recipe from AWSUM foodie Jenny Morris, some AWSUM love puzzles and word games, as well as a few fashion tips that show just how much we love denim. GRADE 8 ORIENTATION WEEKEND

BADENHORST TWINS SHINE AT EASTERN CAPE KARATE TRIALSPort Rex held their annual

Grade 8 Orientation camp from 23-24 January 2015. Armed with black bags and carrying their weekend kit, they began with the traditional beach cleanup which covered a 15 kilometer stretch of the Wild Coast from the Glen Eden River mouth to the Cefani River mouth - a pleasant walk and valuable exercise for students and community alike.

After arriving at their destination the prefects took charge as the

exhausted newcomers were taught the traditions and values of their new school through a number of activities which involved games and boisterous singing of their new school song in the dunes. After a long days activities, appetites were attended to by Mrs Beckman (a teacher) and her crew.

Mr Smith, this year’s Grade 8 head, likened the new learners to a box of gems - some may be diamonds and rubies while others are still a little rough, but they

are all valuable once they have earned their place in the jewelry box.

After the Grade 8s were safely returned to their homes, the weekend continued and the rest of the Port Rex staff arrived for a staff development program which saw new staff members welcomed to the Port Rex family. Goals were set for the upcoming year and the staff hope to tackle the forthcoming challenges with a high degree of professionalism.

From Saturday 24th to Sunday 25th January 2015, the staff of Port Rex Technical High School attended a Professional Growth weekend at Cefani Mouth Resort. The theme for the weekend was “Professionalism.” We discussed this theme with regards to our academics, sport, cultural activities and professionalism in general. After settling into our bungalows, on Saturday afternoon we enjoyed an entertaining “Amazing

Race” which saw us scrambling all over the beach in order to complete the tasks. The teams built sandcastles with the aim of rolling a marble as far as possible, dug for treasure in the sand, tried to find all of the objects on a list, and bounced various balls into a bucket. All team members had to work together in order to complete these tasks. A braai was held on Satur-day evening which allowed us to relax after the exercise

of the afternoon, and spend time socialising with our colleagues. On Sunday morning, each bungalow was in charge of cooking one type of food, which we then enjoyed during a “travelling breakfast.” After our delicious meal, we enjoyed a 4km beach walk from Cefani to Cintsa. As a staff, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and gained new and valuable knowledge which can be put to use.

The Eastern Cape Karate Trials in which two of our learners participated were held in Uitenhage on Saturday 31 January 2015. Twins Harold and Ashley Badenhorst participated in the Junior Male Kumite Division and managed to come first and second in their division and qualified for the Eastern Cape Karate Team. The Team will be going to Johannesburg in March 2015 to participate in the South African Trials.

SPOTLIGHT ON LUXOLO JITA PORT REX FIRST TEAM WATERPOLO TOURNAMENTAttending Port Rex Technical High School, many would not have expected me to go into fashion designing, but I honestly think it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Port Rex has taught me a lot about the industry and how to work with people in more ways than one. From the first skirt I had done to the recent Cement piece collection which consisted of three outfits, I have certainly grown. In 2014 I made my debut collection which was showcased at the prestigious Vukani Fashion Awards in Johannesburg at the beautiful Shine

studio where over 200 people attended, including South African A-listers. I trust that 2015 will be a fruitful year for me, getting my designs showcased in East London and South Africa as a whole, after having won the merit awards at the PPC Imaginarium Awards which was held at University of Johannesburg on the 22 January 2015. I am looking forward to attending the biggest design expo in Africa, The Design Indaba in Cape Town at the Cape Town International Convention Centre which runs from 27 February - 1 March 2015.

This weekend will be one of my biggest learning and connecting curves in the industry thus far. I am really excited and would like to thank my Port Rex family for the amazing support they have given me.

Port Rex hosted their annual First Team Waterpolo tournament on 23-24 January 2015 at the Port Rex Technical High School Swimming Pool. The Tournament was made up of 12 schools in the Eastern Cape including Grey College from

Bloemfontein. The tournament was run well and everything ran smoothly. The tournament ended with Grey Port Elizabeth winning a tightly contested game against St Andrews. Port Rex was placed 8th in the tournament.

The inspiration for making chocolate Pavlova (which is, in essence, what this gâteau is), came from dear friend and wonderful cook Stephanie Pattinson, whom I regard as a second mom. It’s a really special dessert: meringue stacked high with layers of cream and melted chocolate, and sprinkled with cherries. True decadence, and definitely worth the effort.

For the chocolate meringue• 8 egg whites• pinch of salt• 450g castor sugar• 10ml vanilla extract• 20ml white vinegar• 40ml corn flour, sifted• 30ml cocoa powder, sifted

For the layers• 180g good quality dark chocolate• 200ml cream (to melt with chocolate)*• 10ml vanilla extract or seed scrapings

of 1 vanilla pod• 300ml cream, whipped until just stiff*• fresh cherries or strawberries for

garnishing• grated chocolate for garnishing

(optional)*this recipe uses 500ml cream in total

To make the meringuePreheat the oven to 140˚C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.

Whisk the egg whites and salt until just stiff. Gradually mix in the castor sugar, one spoon at a time. Whisk the mixture until glossy and thick.

Use a metal spoon to fold in the vanilla, vinegar, corn flour and cocoa powder lightly but thoroughly.

Spoon the meringue mixture on to the prepared baking sheet. Make four circles, each with a 20cm diameter, with fairly thick bases and raised edges.

Bake for one hour then turn off the heat. Leave the meringue in the oven until com-pletely cold (preferably overnight).

To make the fillingPlace the chocolate and 200ml cream in a double-boiler and stir over low heat until the chocolate is just melted. Leave to cool completely.

Stir the vanilla into the 300ml whipped cream.

Place a meringue disc on a serving platter, spread with a quarter of the chocolate mixture followed by a quarter of the whipped cream. Top with another meringue disc and repeat three more times. Garnish the final layer of chocolate and cream with fresh fruit and the optional grated chocolate.

Coffee and hazelnut alternativeOmit the cocoa powder from the

meringue recipe and add 20ml instant espresso coffee powder to the mixture instead. Once the meringue discs are baked, layer them with whipped cream and caramel-dipped hazelnuts.

Note: For one large Pavlova, halve the ingredients for the chocolate meringue. Top with the melted chocolate and cream (optional).

We’re big fans of 2014’s Samsung Galaxy S5, the LG G3, the Sony Xperia Z3 and the iPhone 6, but we’re even more impressed by what’s to come this year. Here we reveal the 10 smartphones to be most excited about in 2015.

1. SAMSUNG GALAXY S6If you’re a Samsung fan but would like a phone rather than a phablet, the S6 will be just what you’re looking for. We should see this phone unveiled at a Samsung Unpacked event on 1 March 2015.

2. SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 MINIThe Samsung Galaxy S6 mini is likely to arrive a few months after the standard Samsung Galaxy S6 – perhaps late June or early August – and will be a more compact version of its big brother, with a slightly slimmed-down spec.

3. SAMSUNG GALAXY A7Samsung has confirmed its Galaxy A7, a gorgeous phablet with a 6.3mm unibody metal chassis, a 5.5in Super AMOLED screen and 64-bit-octa-core processor. The A7 is not yet for sale, but will come in both single

and dual-sim variants.4. HTC ONE M9We are massive fans of the HTC One M8, which means we just can’t wait for a better version of this phone. The HTC One M9 is expected to follow the HTC Desire Eye with a super-selfie 13MP front camera and 20MP rear camera.

5. HTC ONE M9 PLUS / PRIME / ULTRAWe’ll most likely have to wait until September to get our hands on this version. If the rumours are true, the HTC One M9 Ultra / Plus will pack a 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB RAM. It will also feature a fingerprint scanner.

6. SONY XPERIA Z4Sony updates its flagship handsets every six months, so with the Sony Xperia Z3 having been released in September 2014, we can expect the Xperia Z4 in March at IFA (2 to 5 March 2015). There is speculation that the Sony Xperia Z4 will tie in with the new James Bond movie, with actor Daniel Craig

and director Sam Mendes expected to be involved in the design.

7. LG G4We stand by our statement that the LG G3 was the very best phone you

could buy in 2014. Things can only get better with the G4.

8. MICROSOFT LUMIA 940Part of the reason we’re so excited about the upcoming Microsoft Lumia 940 is that it will be one of the first handsets to run Windows Phone 10 – or just Windows 10, as rumour has it that Microsoft intends to tackle the Windows Phone apps problem by running one OS across

phones, tablets, PCs and laptops.9. IPHONE 7 / IPHONE 6SThe iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were released in September, and in the months leading up to that, the rumour mill went mental. Be prepared for more of the same with the iPhone 7, which will launch in September 2015 running iOS 9. As always, we’re expecting a faster processor and some upgraded specs, but little change to the design. Note that the phone will probably be called the iPhone 6s rather than the iPhone 7, but we’re sticking with the latter name for now.

10. SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 5Despite the fact that everyone keeps harping on about Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup, it’s the Note series that really impresses. Like the new iPhone, the Note 5 won’t be released until September 2015, but it’ll be well worth the wait.

On Sunday the 25th January, George Randell Primary School was a part of the Buffalo City 70.3 Half Ironman where the school manned a water point for the cycle leg of the triathlon at the 70 km mark of the cycle. The school selected the entire u13A rugby squad and some prefects to work on the day. It was a very early start to a Sunday as the children had to be at the water point to set up at 6am. The children worked tirelessly in setting up the point where they served cold water and glutamine or “GU” to the athletes. It was a long wait until the first cyclist came through but by 11h00 the station was buzzing and the “Georgies” had to work like Trojans in ensuring all athletes had liquid refreshment. It was a long, hard day’s work but well worth it as the school received some remuneration for the children’s services. A portion of this money will be used to finance the boy’s u13A Rugby tour to Glenwood in Durban in March and another portion will be given to the Prefect Body of GRPS.

The 2015 George Randell prefects read their pledge of allegiance and service to the School of learners, teachers and parents at the Prefect Induction.

The 20th TFM Tomato Trot drew over 590 15km runners/walkers add in the 400 plus cyclists and the 1400 5km fun runners/walkers and you have a huge crowd of people having a great day out in the coutryside. It was a perfect day for running, not too hot or too windy and feedback from all involved was once again enthusiastic. The first male runner, Mziyanda Hlazo completed the 15kms in 00:52:16 with the fastest lady, Stephanie Smith at 01:00:11

just under eight minutes behind.

The growth of the 15km Run/walk event from 36 runners 20 years ago has been phenomenal.

The new 55km mountain bike race drew 65 riders, most of whom were impressed by the level of challenge presented by the route and have indicated that they will return again next year. The winner Jason

Reed completed the course in 02:29:11, six minutes ahead of the next finisher.

The introduction of an 8km cycle attracted 86 riders of all ages and abilities.

The TFM Tomato Trot is all in all, a successful and growing event that continues to provide an opportunity for the entire family to get involved in good fun and healthy exercise.

Special guests at the George Randell Primary Prefect Induction, Eric Moss - Headboy of George Randell High School, Mrs Rowena Bosman, who was honoured for her devoted service to the School as parent and SGB member, and Kerenza Moodley, Deputy Headgirl of George Randell High School. All three had been pupils of George Randell Primary School!

George Randell Primary parents demonstrated their interest in and support for their children as they filled the school hall to overflowing at the first Parent Teacher meeting of 2015! After

the initial joint meeting, they were given the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher for a more intimate and detailed meeting of the expectations for the school year.

Clarendon Primary School got their pre-season hockey training off to a good start with a weekend camp run by some of South Africa’s top young coaches.

Siyoli Waters (Lusaseni), a Clarendon Old Girl and currently ranked no 20 in the world, held a coaching clinic with Clarendon and Selborne pupils.

As part of the GPS leadership programme, our prefects for 2015 attended a leadership development camp at Areena Resort during the last weekend of January where Mr Neil Le Roux imparted invaluable skills that they will need in the year ahead.

Robyn Becker, who gained her Eastern Cape Provincial Colours for chess, represented BCM at the SA Junior Chess Championships in Kimberly early in January where she did our school proud.

Cricket season is well under way at GPS and boys from the U13 group have been hard at work since early January, with their coaches putting them through their paces!

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS DAYOn Tuesday, 27 January, Hudson Park Primary held its annual Interhouse Athletics Day at the Jan Smuts stadium. Hudsonians took part in a number of track, field and fun competitive games. It was a fun filled day and not even the rain could spoil the event. The Victor Ludorum was Ntsika Honi, and Tayla-Jade Marais was the Victrix Ludorum.

Congratulations to Clifton, who won the House competition with 316 points. Dominican was the runner up with 310. Vincent scored 228 points. The top scores this year were extremely close, and the rivalry was ultimately decided by the House Spirit competition for cheering.

NEW HOCKEY ASTRO TURF

GRADE 8 ORIENTATIONEast Londoners enjoyed a wonderful evening of classical music in the new Stirling Music Centre Auditorium on Saturday 31 January. It was the first concert of the year in the auditorium and the star of the evening was German Clarinettist, Stefanie Nedwed who joined East London based musicians Germaine

Gamiet, Jacques du Plessis, Wesley Wong, and students from the University of Fort Hare Music Department for an hour-long programme of classical masterpieces. Upcoming concerts in the auditorium: Chameleon Trio (13 Feb), Thandi Nutli Jazz Concert (15 Feb), Connection Saxophone Quartet (20 Feb).

Stirling Primary School and Stirling High School held a sod turning ceremony on 30 January which saw the commencement of an exciting joint venture between the two schools to build a full size Hockey Astro Turf. The school year started off on a high note as the Intermediate Phase learners took part in the school’s annual Inter house gala. Congratulations to the following children who all broke records on the day: Tayla Botha, Joss Freegard, Tylor-Jesse Glover, Matthew Greener and Justin Scheepers.

Congratulations to the Primary School prefects of 2015 who were inducted at a special assembly on Tuesday, 27 January. Best wishes for the year ahead!

We as educators were once again extremely proud of our class of 2014. Our matrics achieved a 100% pass rate once again. We are also very happy for the 69% of the class of 2014 who passed with a Bachelor’s pass and therefore are able to further their studies at a university. At our 2014 Prize Giving Bianca Matthis was announced as the Dux of the school and we congratulate her on achieving distinctions in 6 of her 7 subjects as well as achieving distinctions in her overall marks. Paul Michell and Brendan Smit also produced outstanding results. Some more interesting stats that emerged when studying the grade 12 results:47 learners x 7 subjects = 329 subject results to consider• 6 subject failure results• 46 subject results over 80%• 124 subject results over 70%• Therefore nearly 38% of the subject results were above 70%. Beaconhurst staff says well done to the class of 2014. You have raised the bar!

Another successful athletics event was held at Beaconhurst Park on Monday, 26 January. The lntermediate phase learners participated in various track and field events on the day. Special mention must

be made of Bulumko Mfundisi and Tylor-Jesse Glover who both broke 2 records. Other record breakers were: LindokuhleJiya, Tamzin Kent and Tayla Botha.

WATERPOLO LADIES GRADE 8 “CAMP”

BEING HEROES – DONATING BLOODTop achievers received Aloe Awards (Aggregates of 80% and above) at the Academic Assembly held on Friday, 30 January for their excellent results at the end of last year. A number of other pupils also received merit badges for their academic achievements.

Gabriella Rothmann and Bathandwa Dyantyi both represented the Border team at the National Waterpolo event held in Johannesburg during the holidays. Gabriella played for the u19A team, which placed 3rd. While Bathandwa played for the u16A team which placed 2nd. Congratulations to both girls.

A Grade 8 “camp” was held on Saturday, 24 January. This was a fun-filled day aimed at helping the new learners make friends and get to know the school and all its traditions. It was hugely successful thanks to the prefects and staff involved.

Cambridge High School in collaboration with the SANBS, held its first blood drive for the year on Monday, 2 February. Learners were asked to be heroes and donate blood as their blood can save lives. This first drive, under the guidance of Miss Hagerty and the new peer promoters, was a great success and is a promising start to the year.
