FRINGE FACTSDid you know? Fringes originated from the Native American tribes who created garments with fringes to repel rainwater from soaking them as they rode across the prairies. Then in 1920 the Flapper Era made fringes an fashion icon with those famous fringed dance dresses. Finally the hippie era snapped up this fabulous fringe craze and made it their own. Now you can have fun with fringes!

GRADE 10’S VISIT AMATOLA WATEROn 26 August, 45 Grade 10 Physical Science pupils visited the Amatola Water treatment works at the Nahoon Dam. They were shown around and had the opportunity to ask questions and see exactly how our water is made safe for use. They saw how the water is cleaned and purified, and also visited one of the laboratories. This wonderfully educational experience was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Ms. Tandi Thomas and her team for making it possible.

SCIENTISTS SUCCEED AT ESKOM EXPO FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTSOn 7 August, Daniel Rothmann and Bethany Robinson participated in the Regional Science Expo. This required learners to either do a study on something or invent something new. Daniel created a board-game called “Consequential Conundrum” to help young children learn how to deal with situations they may face in their life. He received a gold medal for this project and will attend the National Expo held in Pretoria, during the October holidays. Bethany did a study on the impact of cell phones on one’s memory and learning ability, and showed, unsurprisingly, that the effect is negative. She received a bronze medal for this thought-provoking study.Well done to both learners for their fantastic achievements.

CAMBRIDGE TAKES ON HUDSON IN CLASSIC CLASH22 August saw Cambridge High School take on Hudson Park High School in the annual Classic Clash on Hudson’s fields. While a number of the hockey matches were cancelled due to the poor weather, all the netball and rugby went

ahead as planned. The Cambridge High School First Netball Team beat the Hudson Park First Team in a very intense, nail-biting game. The First Rugby Team had a very tough game, but unfortunately lost their final game of the season.

GRADE 2 TRAIN TRIP On Tuesday, 25 August 2015, 84 very excited Grade 2 learners boarded the Metrorail Train to Berlin. The learners were accompanied by 34 parents. The train left East London station at 10:45. Picnics were packed for the trip and the eating commenced as soon as the train left the station! The train trip was the conclusion of the Life Skills theme “Transport” and for the majority of the learners it was the first time they had ever travelled by train. This is an annual event for the Beaconhurst Grade 2s and one they look forward to from Grade R. The learners went to Berlin Station where the train stopped for a 20 minute break. Parents and learners then boarded the train back to East London. On the return trip, some learners were lulled to sleep by the motion of the train, while others sang songs and danced.

The train arrived at the East London station at 13:36 where all the tired, but happy passengers disembarked

Grade 2 learners waiting patiently to board the train to Berlin.

Time for a quick toilet break at Berlin Station before the train returns to East London.

As soon as the train departed the East London station learners tucked into their picnics!

And we’ve all arrived safely back in East London!

“AS TIME GOES BY” The Intermediate Phase presented a fantastic concert entitled ‘As Time Goes By’. The grade 4-7 learners sang and danced along to hits such as ‘Hey baby’ and ‘Grandma’s Feather Bed’. Great fun was had by all and even the teachers performed a number! A big thank you goes to Mrs Geddie for writing the play script.

COOL CHRIS CREWSubstance abuse is a serious issue in schools around our country and the Cool Chris Crew has decided to take up the fight for a safer future. This group of people travel around the country, doing presentations and plays regarding the effect of substance abuse on teenagers. Beaconhurst was privileged enough to be visited by this determined crew. The school got to watch a play which revolved around the changing behaviour of a substance-abusing teenager and his mother. It is such a clever initiative to inform learners about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and how to overcome the struggles of substance abuse or even how to avoid getting involved with such substances. We are very thankful for this opportunity!
