STAFF DEVELOPMENT“LEADERSHIP IS NOT ABOUT TITLES, POSITIONS, OR FLOW CHARTS. IT IS ABOUT ONE LIFE INFLUENCING ANOTHER.” JOHN C. MAXWELL

George Randell Staff, with invited teachers from several other local schools, were privileged to hear Mr Ryno Truter address us on the qualities of true leadership. We are ALL

leaders, whether Principal of a school, a teacher, a coach. Whether we lead a Staff of adults, a class of children, a sports team, or even an individual – we lead most powerfully

by “Walking the Talk”. Mr Truter emphasised the concept that leadership does not mean having followers; it’s about having an impact, or influence, on those around us.

Two months ago, De Villiers underwent a full reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate knee ligaments with an artificial graft, as well as a repair of the medial collateral knee ligament. In simple terms, he had a full knee reconstruction. According to dr Jacques Snyman, this is fairly serious surgery that could be expected to put the rugby player out of commission for approximately eight months.

De Villiers noted that he is very fortunate to have supportive infrastructures at both the Springboks and the Stormers to help him recover from injuries and perform at optimal levels. “In this case, I still needed surgery to repair the damage to my knee, and it really helped knowing I had a supportive and understanding medical scheme in my corner.”

“Recovery after major knee surgery is a slow and careful process requiring input from the orthopaedic surgeon, physical therapist, chiropractor, and trainer who know your abilities and can advise you accordingly,” he explained.

Dr Snyman explains the usual stages of recovery one may expect after major knee surgery:Post-surgeryAfter serious knee surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon will usually evaluate any swelling and pain, your muscle activation patterns, and the range of motion of your knee (as well as that of your hip, ankle and lumbar spine). Every joint should function properly so that there is no added stress placed on the knee.

The first two weeksDecreasing the swelling and reaching full passive range of motion is very important in the first few weeks after surgery. Treatment options and programmes may include icing the area regularly and working the range of motion between icing sessions. Adhering

to these programmes is crucial to recovery.

Start doing weight-bearing exercisesOnce you have achieved a full range of motion, you can start doing supervised weight-bearing exercises, which may include squats and lunges to strengthen the knee and ligaments.

“Having knee surgery is most certainly a humbling experience that teaches you not to take your health for granted,” said De Villiers. “My body is pivotal to my career, but injuries do happen – especially in a sport like rugby. Injuries are part of life; you just have to accept them, listen to your doctor and medical specialists, and work hard to recover.

“At this stage, it’s difficult to determine how long I’ll be out of action. In all likelihood, it will be for about eight months, but I am doing everything I can to fast-track my recovery. I am also trying to keep fit by doing some low-intensity cycling and swimming.

“The time-out has also given me the perfect opportunity to bond with my baby, Luka, the newest addition to our family.

JEAN DE VILLIERS: ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERYWith little over eight months left before the start of one of the world’s most anticipated sporting events, the Rugby World Cup, South Africans are waiting with bated breath to see whether national rugby captain Jean de Villiers will be fit enough to play after he sustained a serious knee injury against Wales last year.

HONOURS AWARDS PORT REX TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL U15A WATERPOLO TOURNAMENT 2015

STAFF

VALENTINES DAY 2015

At our Academic Award Assembly two learners namely, Terry Reynolds and Nathan Weiss received Academic Honours Awards. Here they are pictured with their parents: Port Rex Technical High School held its annual u/15

Waterpolo Tournament on February 2015. This year we had 12 teams playing with the inclusion of Grey College from Bloemfontein. The first day saw the usual rain and windy conditions, making some of the passes go astray. This just fuelled the excitement of the play. We thankfully missed the thunder and lightning, which was a relief to everyone. As the first day drew to a close, we saw Grey High School, Selborne College, St Andrews and Stirling all heading the top of their respective pools. The second day saw ten matches with some rather exciting polo played in superb conditions. We saw some close score lines as teams were playing for positional play. The finals were played in good spirit with two rivals, namely Grey High School and St Andrews. The overall winner was Grey High School who notched up first position in their second year running. The final score was Grey 8-2 St Andrews. We would like to thank all teamsfor participating in the tournament, once again an exciting affair and hope

to get additional teams on board next year. We look forward to hosting the tournament again and hope to see Border Waterpolo grow from strength to strength.

At the end of February 2015 we sadly had to say goodbye to Mr Grant Anderson our Sports Administrator and HSS educator who left us to work in the private sector. We wish him well in his future endeavours.

Every year Cupid comes along and the town is painted red and white with hearts galore, well this year nothing changed and our Prefects enjoyed the task of being our own little Cupids at school for a day. They showered the school with gifts galore, so even though it was a school day it really was one loved by all.

Our well respected, beloved receptionist decided to call it a day. Mrs Anne McCormick has left a void which will be very hard to fill. Her friendliness, creativity and willingness to help will be sorely missed.

STIRLING HIGH SCHOOL(t) 043 735 1444 (e) [email protected]

SABRINA FAIRStirling High School proudly presents Sabrina Fair, written by Samuel Taylor and directed by Mr Marc Williams. The play, which is presented by special arrangement with DALRO (Pty) Ltd., is set on Long Island, just outside New York City, in the 1950s. It deals with the wealthy Larrabee family and Sabrina Fairchild, their chauffeur’s daughter.Sabrina lives above the garage, with her father, and when she is of age, she moves to Paris, where she lives and works for five years. When she returns, she is caught in an awkward spot, as she no longer fits in as the chauffer’s daughter nor does she fit in with the Larrabee sons, with whom she grew up. A charming, coming of age story, Sabrina Fair is likened to the story of Cinderella, as we see

Sabrina transform, before our eyes, into a mature young lady. Crossing social class lines is just one theme that is addressed in this witty romantic comedy.Dylan Vosloo, a Prefect and Grade Twelve Dramatic Arts student takes the lead role of Linus Larrabee II, while Tayla Crocker, a Grade Eleven Dramatic Arts student, takes the title role of Sabrina Fairchild. The supporting cast range in age from grades nine to twelve.

The show runs Tuesday, 10 – Saturday, 14 March in the Stirling High School Hall. Tickets, which are available from the school office, range in price from

R30 (Scholars and Pensioners) to R60 (Adults).

VALENTINE’S DAY ASSEMBLYHudson Park celebrated Valentine’s Day by showing love to those in need. Through a Valentine’s themed Civvies Day we raised money to assist families affected by childhood cancer. Children were encouraged to wear red, white and pink. A fun assembly allowed learners, from many grades, to showcase their acting, dancing, spoken word and singing skills to encourage the audience to show love for their fellow man. Nan Gravett from CHOC spoke to the assembly about International Childhood Cancer Day, and explained how the organisation assists paediatric cancer patients. Through these efforts we raised R5700 for CHOC.

PREFECTS’ CAMPFrom 6 – 9 February the Cambridge High School prefects had their annual camp at Forest Way Outdoor Outreach in Stutterheim. This was an excellent team-building experience filled with many fun, albeit often challenging, activities. This included abseiling, raft-building, an obstacle course and a night hike. It challenged many of the prefects and helped to build stronger bonds built on trust. A big thank you to all those involved in making the weekend such a success.

FAIRLANDS VISITThe Interact Club, along with the Photography Club, visited the lovely people at Fairlands Retirement Home on 20 February. They spent time chatting with the residents, and took them fruit, donated by Sanan’s. The Photography Club took the time to take photographs of the beautiful grounds as well as portrait photos of the interesting faces around Fairlands.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURESThe Cambridge High School Outdoor Club travelled to Hogsback on 14 February to hike to three of the beautiful waterfalls that Hogsback has to offer. The group, made up of mostly Grade 8 learners as well as Mr Prentis and Miss Geach had a wonderful time and enjoyed the beautiful views. They enjoyed some delicious food and made a stop at Thomas River on their way back to East London.

FOND FAREWELLSAt the end of February, Mr Varughese and Mrs Abraham put down the chalk after teaching at Cambridge High School for just over 15 years each. Mr Varughese was a fixture in the Mathematics department, with his lovely wife heading up the Natural Science department and also teaching Life Science. They will be sorely missed, and we wish them all the best as they go into retirement.

Mr Varughese addresses the school at a special farewell assembly.

VALENTINE’S DANCE IRONMAN 70.3 2015On Friday the 13th of February, Beaconhurst High School held their annual Valentine’s Dance. The grade 11’s organised and put loads of planning and effort into the dance. Two DJ’s were hired for the event and they kept the learners dancing all night with their music. The night turned out to be a great success. Thank you to all the grade 11’s and teachers who made the evening possible and for the fun filled night.

Beaconhurst learners had the opportunity to give back to the community through volunteering at the annual Ironman 70.3 Triathlon held near the beachfront. The school has sent students to help before, from handing out race hampers to setting out race bikes. This year this initiative was largely supported and learners flocked to the chance to help out during the weekend. The triathlon, which started registration on Friday, 23 January, is done by international professional athletes. Dedicated learners helped out the entire weekend, including on the actual race day. Sunday morning, 25 January, Beaconhurst hosted a race waterpoint near the N2, handing out water to tired racers. During this time, other learners met at the finish line to work at handing out t-shirts to very deserving finishers. All in all, it was an unforgettable experience and the learners are very eager to take part again next year.

Caitlyn Krull brought her grandmother’s ice skates and newspaper clippings to school. Her grandmother, Vanessa Smith participated in the Natal Figure Skating Championships and also competed in France in 1970.

Juliette Price shows the class a biscuit tin from 1837 – it is filled with original money cowries.

BEACONHURST SUPPORTS CANSA AFRIKAANS OLYMPIAD ENTREPRENEUR’S DAY

NS PROJECT

BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY HABITS ART

SWIMSTAR

On Friday, 27 February 2015, the Beaconhurst learners once again showed their enthusiasm and support for fundraising for CANSA by participating in the CANSA Sprayathon. The learners thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Sprayathon and the school passages were a myriad of colour for the rest of the day.The Beaconhurst learners also supported another CANSA initiative in the form of the “Helping Hands” project. Learners bought templates of hands for R 5.00 which they had to decorate and then return to the school. These “Helping Hands” will be displayed at the upcoming CANSA Relay for Life.

Catelyn Cumberlege wrote the Afrikaans Olympiad and was placed first in the Eastern Cape Province in the Junior division. She was awarded a monetary prize of R300 for her outstanding achievement. Congratulations, Catelyn! Keep holding the Beaconhurst name high.

Every Friday during first break, the Beaconhurst learners hold a market day in the quad. The vendors are mainly Grade 7 learners and this market day forms part of their EMS syllabus. They are taught about profit and loss, mark ups etc. Market day is very well-supported by the other learners. The Grade 7 educators control the Entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs pay for their table and then keep the profits from their sales.

The Grade 5s did an NS project on the skeleton. Here are some of the examples.

Our Grade R learners are very proud of their beautiful, healthy habits artwork.

Congratulations to Caley Kent-Brown, Beaconhurst’s very own swim star. Caley received her Eastern Province Colours for swimming last year and this year she has qualified to swim SA Regional Level 2 in March.
