Whether you’re doing it on your stoep in Strandfontein, on your patio in Pretoria or at your mother’s cousin’s uncle’s house in Kraaifontein, there’s nothing better than the smell of a chop sizzling on the coals.

And, as a bonus, we all get the day off, as our government has decided to set 24 September aside for all South Africans to celebrate our rich heritage.

While browsing the internet, I came across braai.com,

whose mission is to position National Braai Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration on National Heritage Day. These guys have very helpfully shared a list of braai words – a braai dictionary –to help you sound cool around the fire:

George Randell Primary

Inkwenkwezi visited by Grade 4George Randell primary Grade 4 learners visited Inkwenkwezi for a lesson on caring for our environment. They had the amazing experience of interacting with elephants.

Hosts of the 2014 SACEEGeorge Randell primary were the proud hosts of the 2014 SACEE (The South African Council for English Education). Kayleigh Jonker, Nik’itha Sidinile, Donovan Bosman, Liyabona George and Kelly Ridge were the Georgie team that participated with fifteen other East London schools.

The Inkwenkwezi burgers were enjoyed by all – and the male and female brain were no more evident than in the eating of those giant burgers!

Saturday Chess clinicGeorge Randell Primary invited their Chess players and parents for a Saturday Chess clinic. This is what one of the parents, Mrs Talia Tom had to say: “Chess for me has always been for people who are strategists and shrewd business people. I never thought it as a game to enjoy. My child Ambeswa is an enthusiast. Her father bought her a chess board. I had to take her for a chess clinic at school on a Saturday and parents were also partnered up to play against each other. I knew absolutely nothing about the game but thanks to the teachers who coached me on the chess game. Now I know when and how to move some pieces on the chess board. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be there for the next chess clinic. I can’t help but to mention that we were spoilt with coffee/tea and some savoury treats prepared by the teachers. Thank you very much - I enjoyed every moment.” And yes, even Spider Man plays Chess!

LILYFONTEIN RESULTS

On Saturday 6, September, 82 teams took to the tracks, rivers and beaches around Cefani Mouth Resort for this year’s Lilyfontein School Adventure Race. Teams ran, cycled and completed obstacles, in various categories from Grade 1-3 all the way up to the Corporate Challenge. Donovan Sims, who has competed in 9 of the 14 Lilyfontein Adventure Races says, “This

is a race everybody should do. The lessons learnt out on the routes cannot be taught in the classroom and they are invaluable life lessons. One team, had a broken bike, they ran 8kms back to transition to fix it and then got back onto the route. How better to teach people not to give up at the first hurdle?”

Lilyfontein teams really rose to the challenge this year and came in first in each of the SA Schools Championships qualifying categories for U13, U15 and U19. They also took second in the U13 and U15 categories.

Thanks go to all the sponsors particularly Oilco Engineering, Alderson Ambulance, Crossways Spar and Tops, Wild Coast 98.6FM, Cycle Torque, Twizza, Ngumbela Melisizwe Butchery, Fabkomp, Mzantsi Auto and Ener-B and to all the participants that made this one of the best Lilyfontein Adventure Races to date.

Culture at Beaconhurst has been on fire with learners taking part in the East London Elfest, which has taken place throughout August. Learners had the opportunity to show just how dramatic they could be, performing in groups and individually. Pupils could recite and perform various pieces, like poems, advertisements and monologues. The Elfest is a simple and fun way for learners to

perform what they have practised throughout the year and gives them the experience required for whatever reason, whether school or interest. It is no surprise that Beaconhurst pupils kept up a high standard this year, being awarded numerous awards from ‘bronze’ to ‘gold plus’. We are very proud of those who represented our school.

Between the rush to the tuck-shop and the stands, who is to say that the adolescent consumers need to choose? Meet the entrepreneurs of Beaconhurst High School. Unfailingly selling their home-made, delectable snack and deserts every Friday. Merely minutes before the 10h30 break bell, the stands are set and

they’re ready to be start selling, with items ranging from affordable price. “Developing Entrepreneurs is good as students learn to manage money and develop advertising skills at a young age.” Comments a teacher on said activity. In the end, profit becomes the competition and the prize of a day for these hard working students.

On Tuesday, 26 August 2014, 81 Beaconhurst Grade 2 learners, accompanied by 20 parents and 5 teachers boarded the Metrorail train for a return trip to Berlin. The train trip concluded the Transport theme in Life Skills.

Some of the Grade 2 Learners wrote Thank you letters to Metrorail.Sinoyolo Mfaka wrote:“Dear Metro peopleThank you for a ride on the train. It was my first train ride. I enjoyed it so much. It was the best first ride of my life. My friends were there too, so it was fun. I really appreciate it so much. I did! My mom says it was nice from East London to Berlin. I enjoyed learning about everything. It was fun to sing and dance with you. Thank you so much. You’re the best.”

OutingThe Beaconhurst EarlyAct and Landservice children went on an outing to the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve on Friday. They visited the DaimlerChrysler Coastal Education and Visitor Centre, which has a display focusing on East London’s famous surfing culture, and the history of shark attacks in the Nahoon area. They also enjoyed a walk along the Dassie boardwalk and afterwards did a beach cleanup.

CulturalHudson Park High School played host to the Eastern Cape Provincial Debating Competition during the weekend of 5 September to 7 September with 22 schools and 46 debating teams taking part. A well-organized event with contributions by all the background staff, moms and dads made this event a great advert not only for the school, but also for our debating team led by coach/mentor Miss Ronwyn Pearce. When the results came out on Sunday afternoon it was a well-deserved first place for the Hudson A debating side with the Hudson B debating side coming 3rd overall. Our Junior Leaders comprising of selected Grade 11 learners went on a camp at Cefani Resort from 12-14 September 2014. They arrived at school carrying backpacks and sleeping bags and despite some of them looking very tired lugging their bags the mood was very cheery as they all piled onto the busses. After a few delays and the usual last-minute chaos we all headed out for an enjoyable weekend. The determined learners learnt of S.U.R.V.I.V.A.L and C.O.L.D, the important factors of problem solving. The activities they had participated in were incredibly varied and tested a wide variety of skills. These activities included raft

Grade 10 DanceOur Grade 10 dance was held on Friday 29 August 2014 in the De La Salle Hall and was very well attended. It was an unforgettable night, the dance this year proved to be simply out of this world. Donned with black, red and white decor and props, the hall looked amazing. The evening turned out to be quite enjoyable for our grade 10 pupils. We would like to thank all teachers who were involved in the planning of this event.

building, walking on stilts, fire making, balancing, etc. All these presentations were insightful and thought-provoking. Among the many lessons learnt through the completion of these activities was the importance of team work, thinking out of the box and realising that certain materials would be unsuitable for a raft. It was truly inspiring to see the effort and enthusiasm the learners put into all aspects of this camp. A great big thanks goes out to all teachers who were involved. “We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We got to know each other better and gained friendships. We learnt that listening and teamwork is primary and that perfect planning makes perfect. Going to the camp certainly unravelled our characters and our leadership skills. At the end of the day we were all deemed future leaders, motivated each other and had lots of fun and that is all that matters”-Uviwe Mafunda Grade 11.4

At our Spring week our grade 2 learners made unbelievable vegetable creations of which Sponge Bob was one of them!

As part of our Spring theme, these grade 1 learners took part in our Spring hat parade, they really outdone themselves with their hat creations. Wow our U/9 netball team took part in

the Lilyfontein netball festival and did us proud by wining the floating trophy. Well done girls!

Cambridge High School’s Interact Club is the 2nd oldest in South Africa and the oldest in East London. Recently, at an induction dinner, Sisipho Rebe was inducted as the President for 2014/15.

The staff of our school newspaper, Vobis Voice, in order to raise funds, spent an evening working at McDonalds in Amalinda.

The 1st Girls’ Hockey Team decided to take on the Staff in a fun hockey match. Naturally the Staff ran out as the winners 2 goals to one. Of course, the Girls complained that the umpiring was slightly biased, but nobody believes them.

With Cricket Season starting, pictured on the left is Iviwe Gwana practising his batting skills in the nets.

The Grade 11s recently had a leadership afternoon which was run by Jonginenge. This exercise pictured above required both co-operation and co-ordination. The Grade 11s spent the entire afternoon participating in a number of fun activities in which they could display their leadership potential. Much fun was had by all.

Move over Springboks here come the Cambridge U/7’s rugby team who took part in the James O’Kennedy festival and won all their matches they played. Well done boys!
