THE LESSONS BCP 357

THE FIRST READING Isaiah 25:6-9

Reader A reading from the Book of Isaiah

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Please rise in body or spirit and join in singing. THE PSALM SUNG BY ALL BCP 760

PSALM 118:1-2, 14-24 Confitemini Domino

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for / he is good,* his mercy en/dures for ever.

2 Let Israel / now proclaim,*

“His mercy en/dures for ever.” 14 The LORD is my strength and / my song,*

and he has become / my salvation. 15 There is a sound of exultation and / victory*

in the tents / of the righteous: 16 “The right hand of the LORD has / triumphed!*

the right hand of the LORD is exalted! the right hand of the / LORD has triumphed! ”

7

17 I shall not die, but / live,* and declare the / works of the LORD.

18 The LORD has punished me / sorely;*

but he did not hand me / over to death. 19 Open for me the gates of / righteousness;*

I will enter them; I will offer / thanks to the LORD. 20 “This is the gate of the / LORD;*

he who is right/eous may enter” 21 I will give thanks to you, for you / answered me*

and have become / my salvation. 22 The same stone which the builders re/jected*

has become / the chief cornerstone. 23 This is the LORD’s / doing,*

and it is mar/velous in our eyes. 24 On this day the LORD has /acted;*

we will rejoice / and be glad in it. Please be seated for the reading. THE SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Reader A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you--unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them--though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN #191 (vv. 1-3) SUNG BY ALL

ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA! HEARTS AND VOICES HEAVENWARD RAISE (sung to the tune Hyfrydol)

1 Alleluia, alleluia!

Hearts and voices heavenward raise:

sing to God a hymn of gladness,

sing to God a hymn of praise.

He, who on the cross a victim,

for the world’s salvation bled,

Jesus Christ, the King of glory,

now is risen from the dead.

2 Now the iron bars are broken,

Christ from death to life is born,

glorious life, and life immortal,

on his resurrection morn.

Christ has triumphed, and we conquer

by his mighty enterprise:

we with him to life eternal

by his resurrection rise.

3 Christ is risen, Christ, the first-fruits

of the holy harvest-field,

which with all its full abundance

at his second coming yield:

then the golden ears of harvest

will their heads before him wave,

ripened by his glorious sunshine

from the furrows of the grave.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 16:1-8

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE NICENE CREED BCP 358-359

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

OFFERTORY SENTENCE BCP 377

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2

OFFERTORY ANTHEM Music by Douglas E. Wagner Text by Charlotte Lee

REJOICE! THE LORD HAS RISEN

Rejoice! The Lord has risen from the dead, Alive and with us now, our spirits led,

So as it was when all creation said: “Alleluia, Alleluia!”

From winter’s bitter chill we are reborn; New life is ours on this triumphant morn; With voices clear, we raise the antiphon;

“Alleluia, Alleluia!”

Free from the bonds of earth our Lord did rise,

And bought our freedom with this sacrifice. Therefore, we chant this hymn unto the skies;

“Alleluia, Alleluia!”

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Rejoice, he’s risen from the dead. Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice,

The Lord has risen!

THE FLOWERING OF THE CROSS

The flowering cross is found in Christian art as early as the sixth century and is based on a legend that says that the cross itself burst into bloom at the moment that Jesus died. The legend of the True Cross describes how the wood of the cross came from a tree that sprang from a seed taken from the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS SUNG BY ALL

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD S #130 Music: From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert arr. Richard Proulx

17

18

The people stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

19

THE INVITATION TO HOLY COMMUNION

A spiritual communion is a personal devotional that anyone can pray at any time to express their desire to receive Holy Communion at that moment, but in which circumstances impede them from actually receiving Holy Communion.

The Celebrant invites the following prayer to be said by all:

Beloved Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen. (St. Alphonsus de Liguori, 1696-1787)

MUSICAL NOTE:

Many thanks to Dr. Gilbert Cline for joining us today, 'virtually' on his beautiful trumpets. Gil has played at Christ Church many times over the past few decades and it is always a thrill to have him. Please note the beautiful instruments he is using from the Baroque trumpet to the Flugelhorn. As someone once said, nothing says Easter like organ and trumpet music and how fortunate we are to have Gil join us virtually for our service today!
