Satellite library for the Vulindlela areaNQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]
SIX primary schools and onehigh school in the Vulindlelaarea will benefit immenselyfromasatellite librarysoontobe based at the KwaMncanecommunity hall.
At the recent MsunduziMunicipality ExecutiveCommittee (Exco) meeting, itwas noted that this satellitelibrary would serve as acentralresourcecentre for theseven schools near BulwerRoad, as well as five earlychildhooddevelopment(ECD)centres within the area.
The Msunduzi Municipali-ty identified the KwaMncanecommunity hall as a suitablevenue because it haselectricity, lockable doors andsecure fencing for amplesecurity and it is located closeto the main road for easyaccess.
The library will save theVulindlela pupils trips to
distant libraries, namely theGeorgetown and the BessieHead libraries, which are farfrom the KwaMncane area.
In 2013, officials from theMsunduzi Municipality’sBessie Head Library, Depart-ment of Arts and Culture’slibrary services, communitymembers and the wardcouncillorvisited theKwaMn-cane hall to identify a suitableroom for the satellite library.
The Msunduzi Municipali-ty will be responsible for therepair of the room which
includes painting the walls, installing burglar guards onthe windows, installing threesecurity gates on the doors, fixing windows, cleaning thefloors and fixing the toilets.
The municipality willalso appoint two libraryassistants for effectiveprovision of services tothe community, and theKZN Library Service willensure that there is enoughmaterial and professionalsupport for the Vulindlelasatellite library.

Banks to offer smart card ID’sNOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>[email protected]
WITH over one million smart card identitydocuments having been issued across the countrysince last year, more people are to benefit fromthe system following a partnership betweenthe Department of Home Affairs and majorbanks.
Last week, the Minister of Home Affairs MalusiGigaba announced that a pilot project is to startin April this year, where people can makeapplications for smart card ID’s at theirprospective banks without going to home affairsoffices.
Head of retail banking at Standard Bank,Sibongiseni Ngudze, said that the bank willcommence its pilot with their staff with effectfrom next month.
“This form of public and private collaborationmarks a move to cement our strategy of becominga truly innovative customer centric institution, that looks outside of traditional businessboundaries to meet the ever changing needs ofour customers. Not only is it an extremely convenient way to aid and deliver this crucial service toSouth Africans, but it will also be safer, quickerand more efficient.
“Existing customers will be able to apply fortheir new smart card ID’s as from April. As we arein a pilot phase, we will be starting the processwith our commercial and business banking
customers, as well as our prestige and privatebanking customers.
“Customers will be invited by appointment tomake applications and the entire process will behandled by the Department of Home Affairs whowill have a dedicated office at the bank. Due tosafety and security reasons, customers will needto collect their cards in person. This is the biggeststep towards ensuring that all South Africans areempowered to obtain their legal documents in anefficient and convenient way.”
Ngudze further said that the pilot project willtake six months.
South African Banking Risk InformationCentre (Sabric) spokesperson Kalyani Pillay said:“We believe that this is a great initiative andparticipating banks are at different stages ofreadiness”.
So far only Standard Bank, Nedbank and FirstNational Bank have signed a memorandum ofunderstanding. Managing executive of NedbankIntegrated Channels, Brian Duguid, said that thebank is currently assessing its infrastructure andprocesses to assist with the initiative.
“The bank has committed to a single site pilotto test the requirements as set out.”
Head of communications at Capitec, Charl Nel,said that they have declined the opportunity, saying that all available space is utilized to serviceclients and there is no excess staff capacity in theirbranches to deal with the expected volume ofapplications.

HEALING takes time but counselling canhelp the process.
That’s the message from theprincipal of Fezokuhle Primary School, who issettoreturntoschoolthisweekaftertakingtwoweeks off to deal with the depression hesuffered as a result of the deaths of eight of hispupils on January 28.
Bhekane Nkwanyana took two weeks offwork to visit a doctor and to recoveremotionally at home.
Nkwanyana said the timeaway fromschoolwas the best option to take.
“I needed some time to heal and gainstrength after the bad news,” he said.
Headdedthatcounsellingreallyhelpedhimto get back on his feet.
“Healing is a process. I still need to visit apsychologist for another examination,” saidNkwanyana.
Last week Nonzuzo Zuma (11) died inhospital as a result of the bakkie crash.
The headmaster expressed his deepestcondolences to the Zuma family.
“Government has provided counselling tothe school. We hope that government reachesout soon to all the parents in need ofcounselling,” he said.
Families of pupils killed in the bakkie crashhaveunitedandstartedcounsellingeachotherto accept the tragedy and move on.
Olwethu’s father, Siboniso Vilakazi, hasbeen arranging meetings with other familiesand talking through the tragedy. Vilakazi saidthat he visitedNonzuzo’s family after he heardshe had died to send his condolences.
Aparent of one of the pupils still in hospital,Nomusa Njoko, said her daughter Mbaluleki(12) is now in a stable condition.

Is the Imbali bakkie crash driver hiding?SISO NAILE AND CHELSEA PIETERSE
PARENTS of pupils killed and injured in the Imbalibakkie crash last month said they felt disappointedthat the driver has not spoken to them since the crash.
Seven pupils from Fezokuhle Primary died on theday of the crash, and the eighth pupil last week.
But while they seek an explanation, a veil of secrecy surrounds the whereabouts of driver LungileMthimkhulu. Although neighbours say they have notseen her around her house since the accident, familymembers claimed she was still in hospital.
According to a police source she has, however, been discharged from hospital and was believed tobe at her home in KwaPata near Edendale.
Phindile Shezi, whose daughter Yolanda waskilled in the accident, said they would find comfortif Mthimkhulu could come up and explained whathappened on January 28.
“The family has not fully accepted the passing ofYolanda. We haven’t heard a thing from the
Njoko.“We have not been able to contact Lungile. We
cannot blame her for the accident because we stilldo not know what happened,” he said.
“She must just explain how the accidenthappened and why it happened.”
His son, Syamthanda (7), had been released fromhospital while his daughter, Mbaluleki, was still inhospital but recovering.
“They are both well and that is all that reallymatters,” he said.
Apolicesourcewhocouldnotbenamedconfirmedthat Lungile had been released from hospital and wasrecovering at home. But a family member, ZaneleMthimkhulu, denied the release of Lungile in hospital.
She said: “Lungile is not secretly hidden in Durban. She’s still in hospital.”
Speculation about Mthimkhulu’s discharge wererife in Imbali, with neighbours saying they believedshe was staying in Durban to avoid facing thecommunity back home.
Mthimkhulu family butwe heard rumours thatLungile was dischargedand staying in Durban,”she said.
Thobani Chamu, who lost his sonBandile, said: “We needLungile to explain whathappened so that wecan forgive and healproperly. The familyhas not recovered fullyemotionally becausehis [Thobani’s]memory keepsreplaying in our minds.”
Chamu added hisfamily have notreceived any form ofcounselling as yet.
A father whose twochildren were criticallyinjuredinthecrash, alsosaid he had received noword from the driver.
“I have not heardfrom her, the TransportDepartment or theEducation Department,” said Nkosinathi

Encouraging poetryin townshipsNOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>[email protected]
ONamission to change peoples’ negativeperceptions about township life, youngpoets from Imbali Unit 1 have found a
new voice using the power of the spokenword.
Theyoung, talentedandvibrantpoetsmeet every thirdThursdayof themonthat KwamaVuka’s place, where theyshare their experiences in what iscalled ‘kasi vibe’ poetry sessions.
Speaking to Echo one of theorganisers Ndumiso Zondi said:“People have mostly negativeperceptions about township life, where they think everything isabout crime and drug abuse. Westarted these sessions in a bid tochange their perceptions.
“There are a lot of positive things, there are a lot of talented young peoplewho spend their time in thoughtprovoking dialogues rather than engaging incrime. The better way to do this was to speaktopeople throughthespokenword. There isanopenmic sessionwherewe invite anyonewhocan rhyme to come up front and offer uswhatever is available.
“We also give upcoming poets a platform toshowcase their talents and to also learn fromthose who are already established.”
Zondi said that the sessions are not only
thought provoking, but they also keep youngpeople busy instead of them engaging innegative activities.
“Our goal is to grow poetry in the townshipand to reach different audiences. The sessionsare not only limited to poets, but are foreveryone who loves creativity and poetry. Wealso share the stage with local comedians,”ended Zondi.
The sessions run from 7pm to 9pm.

DEMOCRACY, racism and tolerance are some ofthe terms that have been making theheadlines in South African political and sociallandscapes recently.
We still have a long way to go beforedemocracy becomes natural to all of us.
Resources, poverty, positions of power makeit difficult for most of us to abide bydemocratic principles. Football is no exceptionto these challenges.
We see those that have different opinionsas enemies or less patriotic. It would beinteresting to find out the meaning ofpatriotism within the football community in this
country. Political power, money and jobopportunities have created a situation wherepatronage is used to retain positions. There isa lot of jostling for positions and infightingamong football officials. We fail to understandthat the game needs everyone if young peopleare to make significant progress.
We claim to be true Africans yet the opposite is true. We speak against apartheid, colonialism, Eurocentric ideas etc. and yet mostBlack leaders are more white than the European themselves.
When you speak against importing football education ideas, one becomes the enemyof thoseinpower. Westill liveinasocietywherethe use of foreign languages is more convincingto leadership than local languages.
The issue of Liverpool International football schools is very interesting. What is theLiverpool way of playing football? Is it possibleto produce an Englishman out of a youngAfrican boy? What are biological, psychologicalandculturalsimilaritiesbetweenusandtheEnglish?
The reality is that this is just a moneymaking scheme. The idea of offering a fewgifted children scholarships from poorcommunities is nonsensical. The mixing ofgifted players and average talent will result inmediocrity.
Hey, who are we to criticise and complainabout injustices?
We have no right to be questioning thosein power. They know better what those of usat lower levels need. This is a new democraticSouth Africa where the will of a few prevail.Football today belongs to those with politicaland financial power.
Unzima lo mthwalo!

Given Birkett’syoung age, the feat is even more impressive and the Euro Steel ace now joinsrace legends Peter Peacock, Harry Fisher and Gordy Rowe on five victories andwhile ‘Dusi King’ Graham PopeEllis’ record of 15 titles remains safe, for now,Birkett is fast closing in on second on the list Martin Dreyer, who won the raceseven times, even though it’s not a focus of his. Birkett became the first personin the 64 yearold race’s history to drop under the eight hour mark as hecrossed the line in 7:55.35, five minutes and eleven seconds ahead of Euro Steelteam mate Kime.“Today feels like the first time that I have won Dusi, I am really stoked to behonest,” said Birkett. I said it many years ago and I am stillsaying it even now, our localmunicipali-ties need to go all out to make sure thatsports facilities are built and those thatalready exist are well looked after.
So far themajorityof our facilitiesarein a shambles due to neglect.
