SO Cosatu president Sdumo Dlaminimay prove not necessarily to be astooge of the president Jacob Zumagovernment after all.
Speculation and innuendos havehad it that Dlamini is a Zuma “cash-and-carryboy”whoseprimemissionis to dampen Cosatu’s militancywhich was evident when suspendedCosatu general-secretary, Zwelinzi-ma Vavi, was around.
As the Vavi “rape” and “corrup-tion” charges (sounds familiar ofcourse) were making headlines re-cently, I quickly googled Dlamini andstarted analysing his historical andcareer background in relation to his
perceived role as a ‘Zuma sell-out’ ofsome sort.
Judging fromhis recent utteranc-es,Dlaminimayyetdispleasehiscrit-ics if he remains consistent or standfirm against increased toll-gates feesonstrategicnational roadsaswell as,(of course I do not like this one), theyouth wage subsidy which he rightlypoints out is the same thing as thepiece of legislation that is intended tobenefittheyouth(indeedIsupportthelatter).
Like Vavi, Dlamini alsomaintainsthat incentivestoencouragebusinessto employ the youth are not in the in-terestofolderemployeeswhomaybeundermined when employers re-trench them and employ youngstersbecause they comewith governmentbenefits.
Obviously, I can understand thatrising toll-gate charges are a seriousissue given the fact that our countryis deeply dividedwhen it comes to itssocial and economic status – somepeople are very poor and others arevery rich. For instance, I can under-stand how a struggling taxi owner(and there are many of them out
there),will feel the pinch in his or herpocket if he has to pay more in orderto use the road in Johannesburg.
But if the increaseswere targetingtrucks and buses only, I would nothaveanythingtosayabout thematterbecause thesehugevehicles really doundermine the expected life-span oftheroadnetwork. There isnothingasdisappointing as seeing a road thatwas originally beautifully tarred de-velopingpotholesprimarilyduetotheexcessive presence of trucks on ourroads.
So timewill tell if theVavi-Dlaminifall-outmattermay have been blownout of proportion or not.
Is Dlamini a government sweet-heart as themediawould have us be-lieve or not? Is the Vavi suspension agenuine internalmatter related toor-ganisational mismanagement or aploy to weaken Cosatu as we are oflate led to believe, or not?
Experience has shown countless
times that powerandmoneyare verycontroversial. For instance, it is quitecommon in any organisation to havethe president not agreeing with thedeputy president or the general sec-retary.
It happens inbusiness circles thattheCEOdisagreeswith the chairmanof the company’s board of directors. And the same is true for governmentdepartments where there have beencases where a minister or MEC doesnot seeeye toeyewithhisorherheadofdepartment,orthemunicipalman-ager is at odd with his or her mayor.
The role of Cosatu in South Africais very significant. Even though it isnot nice to be stuck in traffic whenthere is a march,
I support peaceful protest actionthat represents the interests of theworking class because my sympa-thies are with them. And that is it.
Inasmuch as I do not agree withCosatu on their stance on the issue of
the youthwage subsidy, I do notwishto see the over 2 million-memberstrong labour federation losing thekind of power it has presently.
I do not wish to see a divided Co-satu thatwill not be respected by em-ployers, (including government as amajoremployer),becausethefreeen-terprise system thrives on exploitingthe working class.
Hence the brave Marxist call:“Workersof theworldunite, youhavenothing to lose but your chains1”
For as long as employers earn in-sanelyhugesalaries,ownmanyvehi-clesandhomesthattheydonotneces-sarily need,
enjoy endless overseas holidayswith mistresses or families, whiletheir workers starve in shacks andtownships, they do not havemy sym-pathies.
Simphiwe Mkhize writes in hispersonal capacity.

Gratitude for city jazz organisersAS one of the attendees, I would liketoapplaudNkanyeziCele,ourownin-ternationally acclaimed jazz drum-mer, and his team for having organ-ised a jazz festival of suchmagnitudeat Woodburn Stadium last Sunday.
I would also like to express mygratefulness to the sponsors whocame on board, namely: Echo, KZNArts and Culture Department, Mgazi
Holdings, Castle Lite, Msunduzi mu-nicipality, The Natal Witness, Msun-duziPietermaritzburgTourismAsso-ciation and Xerox & Fintech.
Even though theweatherwas noton our side, which obviously affectedthe turnout, wehadagoodtimebeingentertained by our musicians.
WearetheCapitalCityofKZN,andit would be extremely important that
as Pietermaritzbugerswe reflect thatby attending when there are enter-tainment events in the city. We needtodispel thenotion thatpeopleofPie-termaritzburg are not sophisticatedenough to embrace and appreciategood things.
Weurgetheresidentsof thisbeau-tiful city to come out in droves whenwe have music festivals and other
forms of entertainment. This wouldencourageourpromoters toorganisemore events, but if we don’t attendthese events we break the spirits ofour promoters.
Let’s turn the City of Choice fromlull into the city of vibrancy.

TALKINGFOOTBALL
“THE better a coach knows his job and the betterhe masters that job, the more he will gain the understandingandrespectoftheplayers.”Unknown.It is also true that great footballers are a product
of great coaches. Good coaching relies on an indepth knowledge of subjects like psychology andpedagogy. If the South African football talent isto reach its true potential, the profile of a “footballcoach” will have to be revisited.Football coaching in the modern era is a difficult
and complex profession. A coach also needs to bea specialist in technicaltactical work and physicaland psychological development. Football peopleneed to develop a culture of reading, studying, researching, experimenting etc. We need to learnand understand the importance of discipline in acquiring knowledge. I think we tend to live too muchon yesterday. Are South African football coaches ready for newdevelopments in the modern game? The fact thatover the past twenty years very few players have
broken into major European leagues is a testament of our coaching levels. We seem to be waryof innovations. We also lack ambition. The majority of professional coaches are content to be “bigstars” in a small pond. It is not right that a countrythat produced Professor Chris Barnard – a hearttransplant specialist cannot produce star coachesand players. It is also important that we start doing instead
of talking. We also need to start giving instead oftaking. South Africans are capable of doing andachieving big in any sphere of life. The problem isthat we still think that the world owe us favours. The language is too much about what people cantake instead of what we can do. There are also toomany chiefs that are pointing fingers instead ofdoing the work. The majority of us will have to dirtytheir hands if South Africa is to join successful nations. The time for singing and dancing is over.Jordan – Safa president is talking about the needto increase a number of coaches at every level. How many of our people are ready to serve withoutcompensation?Sure, increasing numbers is agooddirection but attitudes to service need to change.Moneycannotdothings. It isonlytheretogivesupport. Coaching, just like teaching and nursing, is avocation. Lastly, teaching and coaching begins athome. Fathers and mothers are the first teachersand coaches of their children. Generally, South African parents seem to think that other peopleshould take this responsibility. We have manythings to say about structures like governmentand Safa and yet we are failing in our responsibilities. Charity begins at home. Take care of your children’s future. Stop complaining and start doingthe work. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Dusi favouritesready for OzzieGladwin hit out
THE buzz of anticipation ahead of the OzzieGladwin, presented by Parklane Superspar,intensifiedwiththenewsthat2014DusiCanoeMarathon title hopefuls Andy Birkett andSbonelo Zondi have confirmed their entry forthe important one-day assignment on 10 No-vember 2013.
The duo got their Dusi build-up campaignoff to the perfect start recently when theyclaimedacobweb-clearingvictory in theNatalCanoe Club (NCC) Development Race fromCamps Drift to Bishopstowe.
In a press release, organisers of the OzzieGladwin said thier win of the NCC Develop-ment Race is the perfect momentum buildingresult that theywillbe looking tobuildupononthe water of the Upper uMngeni river nextweekend.
The pair, widely recognized as two of thecountry’s topDusi superstars, claimedahuge-ly impressive victory in their first ever outingtogether in March 2013 when they soared toaK2recordshatteringwinintheNon-StopDu-si–theDusiinaday–andhavesinceconfirmedthey will form a formidable duo at next year’siconic threedayriver journey fromPietermar-itzburg to Durban.
With early season form a somewhat morevaluable commodity this time around than inprevious years due to the ‘untested’ nature ofmany of the top crews set to tackle next year’sDusi, thepairplaceapremiumongettingmoreracing experience under their collective belt.
“Being four months before Dusi, OzzieGladwin is obviously still very early in the sea-sonanda lot canhappenbetween in that time,so the result isn’t too important for Sbonelo(Zondi) and I from a Dusi point of view,” saidthree times Dusi victor Birkett.
“It is more about just trying to spend asmuch time in the boat together, as I would im-agine it is for most of the guys at the momentbecausealmostallof thecombinationsfornextyear’s Dusi.
“Having said that, all these build-up racesallhelpbuildthingsupforusandboththeexpe-rience we gain from paddling in as many ofthese races as possible and the confidencewestart todevelop ifweareable to stringacoupleof decent results together, could all help in thelong run,” said Birkett.
“Ourmain goal is to win Dusi and so theseother races aren’t that important on their ownbut, together, some good results will help!”added Zondi.
