MISHNAH PROJECT We are keeping a decades-old LSS tradition of learning the whole Mishnah between Pesach and the second day of Shavuot - and we can't accomplish this goal without YOU! Please contribute and help us achieve our goal of having every member and friend of LSS take on (at least) one small Mishnah portion to learn. We promise you a meaningful and elevating experience, all in time for Shavuot.

Volunteer mentors or study partners are available upon request. Please sign up at http://hadranalach.com/847 to choose a portion you would like to study. All learning will culminate with a celebratory Siyum luncheon on Monday, June 10 following Musaf. We are asking participants this year to learn their Mishnayot in honor of the memory of our beloved Chazzan Sherwood Goffin, R' Shimon ben Chaim Eliezer z”l.

In addition, please consider learning in memory of an IDF soldiers who fell in the defense of Medinat Israel. Those who participated in past years found it to be a very meaningful experience. Please email Nathan at [email protected].

LSS Annual Dinner Sunday, June 16

5:30pm

To register, please visit www.lss.org/campaign/annualdinner2019

This year’s LSS 55th Annual Dinner theme is “Pay it Forward”. We are honoring three inspiring couples who have given back to the LSS community through their participation and hard work. This week’s spotlight honorees are our Community Service Award recipients, Paula and Nathan Vogel. Paula and Nathan Vogel will receive the LSS Community Service

Award at this year’s annual dinner. Given their devotion to our shul, it is Paula and Nathan who honor us with their service. Nathan has organized dozens of Israel-related programs for LSS. He arranged a solidarity mission to Southern Israel following the 2014 Gaza War. Along with sparkling lectures by Israeli rabbis, scientists, authors... and even a former Mossad agent, Nathan’s creative programs have included the Shalva Band, a tribute to wounded Israeli war heroes and the weekly Chug Ivrit. In addition, Nathan has collected and shipped tons of used clothing to Jewish communities in the Former Soviet Union. Paula is one of the leaders of the LSS Film Club. She is very active in the West Side Gemach which has helped clothe dozens of needy Jews in our community, and she has been involved with the Food Funnel. Together, Paula and Nathan are a “just-do-it” couple, exemplifying all the good that “paying it forward” can accomplish.

Dvar Torah

Lag B' Omer is the Yahrzeit of the great sage, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the author of the Zohar. Many people don't realize that Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai was also a great talmudic scholar and is mentioned many times throughout the Gemara. One famous example is the dispute between Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and Rabbi Yishmoel, found in the Gemara Brachot. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai says that a person should study Torah all of the time and G-d will provide parnasah (livelihood). Rabbi Yishmoel says that a person should have a job or business to earn livelihood and should set aside free time for Torah study. The Gemara goes on to say that many followed the opinion of Rabbi Yishmoel and were successful and some followed the opinion of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and were not successful. The Gemara is teaching us here that the majority of people need to have a job or business in addition to the study of Torah and only a small elite are able to devote themselves full time to the study of Torah. After Shul Ask Your Children: 1. Which day of the Omer is Lag B’Omer? 2. Which famous book did Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai famously author? 3. What is the debate between Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and Rabbi

Yishmoel in Gemara Brachot? Upcoming Events: Shavuot, June 9: Ten Commandments Ice Cream Party: 11:00am Shavuot, June 10: Har Sinai Cake Creation: 11:00am Become a sponsor: email us at [email protected]

Parshat Behar May 25, 2019 Written by: Michael Laufer

Parshat Behar

Right out of this week’s Parsha Behar - Support the Shul Dinner LSS provides a beautiful, welcoming, spiritual home to a large and very diverse membership. We have one goal: to help Jews—regardless of their background—connect to Judaism and the Jewish people. Lincoln Square Synagogue is at the center of the Jewish Community. No one is ever turned away and thousands of people every year turn to us for everything from a place to daven or sell their chametz or to seek spiritual counseling or with Halachic questions. And our Hospitality Committee helps hundreds of people every year find their way to a warm Shabbat or Yom Tov table. If you would like to help support our work or say "Thank You" to LSS, please be part of our Annual Dinner and Journal Campaign. The dinner is on June 16th and we are honoring individuals who have done so much for our community and the wider community: Judith Weil & Lloyd Epstein, Talia & David Liron, and Paula & Nathan Vogel. Here are some proofs from this week’s Torah reading, Leviticus 25 & 26: 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying… The extra phrase “on Mount Sinai” comes to teach us that the concept of contributing generously to the journal and attending the dinner was mandated already at Mt. Sinai 8 And you shall count for yourself: Each of us needs to participate and be counted towards supporting the shul as best we can. 10 It shall be a Jubilee for you: It will surely be the best dinner as we all celebrate together 12 It shall be holy for you: Come listen to the stories of our exalted honorees – it will inevitably uplift you. 35 If your brother becomes destitute and his hand falters beside you, you shall support him: How much more so our shul which reaches out to all nooks and crannies of our community, near and far. 26:2 You shall keep My Sabbaths and fear My Sanctuary: The wonderful Sanctuary called Lincoln Square Synagogue. Please don’t miss the opportunity to attend the dinner, and please consider making a contribution at whatever level you can, even if you are unable to attend. This is the shul’s largest fundraiser of the year and with your help we can continue our work of strengthening the Jewish community.

You can find more details and sign up at www.lss.org/dinner.

25:9 “You shall sound the shofar throughout your land” In celebration of Esther and Shalev. Big mazal tov to the Robinson and Peleg clans.

Shabbat Shalom!
