Page 2: Ivrit Express 5: Telling Who Has What

The Ivrit Express series presents compact lessons in Biblical (not Modern) Hebrew grammar. It aims to reinforce (not replace) your classroom experiences.

Page 3: Ivrit Express 5: Telling Who Has What

This lesson introduces the basics of assigning things to other things—in other words, using possessives.

I recommend that you go through the foregoing picture slides at least three times before advancing to the grammatical discussion.

Page 38: Ivrit Express 5: Telling Who Has What

In fact, you can implicitly learn from the pictures what you need to know: how to use יש and אין followed by ל with various suffixes to say “I have,” “you have,” “she has,” and so on.

Page 39: Ivrit Express 5: Telling Who Has What

Later on you’ll learn other ways to use the suffixes. For now, remember that אין לו ”,means “he has יש לוmeans “he doesn’t have,” and so on as demonstrated in the picture lesson.

Page 40: Ivrit Express 5: Telling Who Has What

In fact, you don’t need to use יש at all. You can use either יש לי כבש or כבש לי to say, “I have a sheep.”

Page 41: Ivrit Express 5: Telling Who Has What

And you can attach the ל preposition to nouns as well as to pronoun suffixes. You can say יש לו כבש (“he has a sheep”) or יש כבש לאיש (“the man has a sheep”).

Use the same pattern to show that one thing includes others, as in the examples with בית and חדש.
