THE EDENDALE EXPERIENCE: THINKING, LEARNING, CREATING
30 May 2012
Next issue: 13 June 2012
Principal’s Message Kia ora, Kia orana, Namaste, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei,
Ni hao ma, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Asalam alikum!
Welcome
We will be welcoming Stephanie Burgess tomorrow, as
a relief teacher for Room 20, as the class teacher has
taken long-term leave. We hope that Stephanie will
enjoy being a part of the Edendale team.
Thank you
To the parents who attended the morning tea for new
parents last week. We hope that you enjoyed the tour
of our school and we enjoyed the invigorating
discussion that took place during the morning tea. We
look forward to getting to know you better.
Class Sizes
There has been much about up-coming changes to
class sizes in the media in recent days. I received an
email from Ministry of Education (Secretary for
Education, Lesley Longstone) about these changes on
Monday, I have copied a paragraph from that email
below.
‘Firstly, I want to reiterate that the Ministry of Education
is dedicated to improving the educational outcomes of
all learners, with an intense focus on those who are
currently underserved by the education system, such as
learners who are Māori, Pasifika, have special needs or
are from low socio-economic backgrounds.’
‘Over the past decade, teacher numbers have increased
at a much greater rate than learner numbers, but we
have not seen the gains in student outcomes that we
might have hoped for, nor made the inroads that might
have been expected for those children who are Māori,
Pasifika, have special needs or are from poorer homes.’
You can read the email in full on our news blog. I have
asked for clarification about the under-serving of
students with special needs and those from poorer
homes (an interesting choice of phrase) and will let you
know the response once I receive one; this is expected
to arrive, I am told, later in the week. Might this mean
funding will be increased to support learners, but we’ll
have to wait and see.
It is hard to determine yet, the effect reduced staffing
will have at Edendale, however we currently fund
part-time teachers for literacy support, our SENCO and
ESOL teacher from our staffing allocation. Information
in the media changes daily at present. According to
reporting I have read on-line, schools could lose
between one-four teachers. Please make your views
known to our local MP. I would also be interested in
hearing your views so do email me at
[email protected] or comment on our newest
blog.
Edendale News Blog
Over the next few days I will be setting up a news blog
where you will be able to read current news and
educational articles both topical and of interest. This
will be in addition to, (for now) but eventually may
replace our current newsletter. This will give you the
ability to comment about each entry, ask questions
and will encourage dialogue between school and
community. I encourage you to ‘follow’ the blog as this
will give you automatic updates. Please bear with us as
we get this underway.
KnowledgeNet
Thank you to Annette and her team for running the
practical parent workshop regarding the use of
KnowledgeNet last week. Please do get into the habit of
logging in to see what your child/your child’s team is
doing at school.

Garden to Table
Kia ora
Another adventurous week at Garden to Table.
Thanks to all who purchased strawberry plants,
chutney and jam from our Mothers day stall. we
have a new wheelbarrow that we have been
putting through its paces!
We welcome a new volunteer Virginia Hewin who is helping
out in the kitchen on a Tuesday morning session. More
volunteers are very welcome!
Please contact Kim at [email protected] for details.
During the gardening class we have been working on a design
for the Endeavour garden. What creative kids we have!
We are also designing mosaic artworks made from plastic
bottle tops. We would love to have your plastic bottle tops
from milk, cream, drink bottles, jars etc, and have a drop off
area for them beside the garden shed under the blue
staircase, we appreciate your plastic donations, yay for
creative recycling!
In the Kitchen we have been harvesting silverbeet,
spinach and rainbow chard and making delicious
silverbeet, potato and thyme tortes with olive oil
pastry. The rainbow chard looks stunning in the
tortes. (recipes coming up soon on our blog!).
We are continually impressed at the children's
increasing cooking and gardening techniques, not to mention
their extending taste buds!
Thanks Sarah, Jodie and Kim

Last Thursday 3 teams were chosen for the Eden/
Albert Rugby tournament. These teams were the
under 40’s, under 50’s and open grade. When we
arrived at May Road Reserve we trained with
Mr Tuala. Then the open grade played their first
game against Owairaka. The boys in their team
were big and bulky making us look tiny. But soon
enough we found our courage and won 2-0.
Mr Wilson, Mr Hall and Mike were cheering us on,
on the sidelines. The open grade was on a roll
and unstoppable (for now). They won all the rest
of their pool games and made it into the final
against Mt. Albert Primary. They had a mix of fast
boys and huge, strong boys. The pressure was
on. Jayden from Room 28 scored the first try.
Then they scored twice to put them in the lead.
Then Kisepi scored and set up another with a
beautiful long pass to Jeffery who slid over the
line. The game ended with a 15 all draw. Then we
went into extra time were no points were scored.
At the prize giving a coin was flipped to see who
would take the trophy home first, unfortunately
we lost the coin toss. But we get the trophy in
two weeks time. Thanks to Mr Wilson, Mr Hall and
Mike for taking us there.

Joshua and Malo
