Science Open Week will take place 27th-29th August with ‘hands on’ interactive displays and experiments happening in

all classrooms. The Science-a-thon is our major school fundraising event for this year. We wish to raise money to

purchase further equipment in the areas of Science and ICT. Science-a-thon packs, questions and sponsorship forms will be sent home on Friday 5th July. This will allow students plenty of time over the holidays to collect sponsors and to

research and learn the answers to the Science-a-thon questions. Students will be tested in Week Two of Term Three (Wednesday 7th August) and sponsorship money will be collected by Week 5 (Friday 31st August).

We are looking for scientists who would like to visit our school during this week!

Edendale National Standards Data: Public Reporting

You may have recently seen this data reported in the media. School statistics used were from 2010 and those reported

are at variance from our statistics in 2013. Ethnicities (%) at Edendale are as follows:

There is a variance between Edendale’s data for Reading, Writing and Mathematics as we reported to MOE and as

reported by the media (public reporting noted for Reading below). Either the data belongs to another school or else it

has been scaled in some way. We have not been informed of any scaling having taken place. We are aware that

e-asTTle scores were scaled down by MOE during the April term break, however we did not use the on-line test so that

should not have affected our students’ scores.

‘+’ ‘-’ shows where our percentages have been either

increased (representing ‘improvement’ only for ‘at’ and

above’ or decreased (representing ‘improvement’ only for

below or well-below). You can find our Annual Reporting

information as reported to MOE on our school website; go

to Information/Charter and follow the link. Thank you.

Garden to Table We had a fabulous time in the garden last week and managed to have most of our lessons

outside with this great weather. We harvested a bumper crop of orange kumara (a total of

around 40kg from our one bed). The largest weighing in at nearly 4kg! This healthy crop reiterates our garden lessons of how we grow strong healthy plants and what we need to add

to our soil to make our plants happy. In the case of our kumara, plenty of Edendale compost, sheep pellets, healthy soil to begin with and a long hot summer. We also harvested some other known vegetables. Salsify is a root vegetable, it’s also known as the "oyster plant". When

you cook them you may well discern a subtle hint of seafood, as our students did when we turned them into fritters with thyme and parmesan. Also on the menu was celeriac, (this is another root crop related to celery) it has a large

bulbous root that we finely sliced; with crisp apples, Italian parsley and a zingy vinaigrette to go with our fritters. Finally we whipped up some spiced kumara cupcakes. Our focus was what nutrients are, where they come from, and the importance of a diet that includes eating a wide

variety of fruit and vegetables (the rainbow of fruit and vegetables). This is especially important to protect our immune system at this time of year! Are you interested in volunteering Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for an hour or so? We would love to

hear from you; please contact Sarah or Jodie, [email protected]
