The distribution of research results is fundamental to the progress of science.

But what is happening in developing countries?


The scientific community in developing countries has two problems:

• The N to S knowledge gap

• The S to N knowledge gap


The N to S problemAccording to ARL Libraries experience:

- costs of serials have risen by

~15%/year

- projected to rise by ~1800% by year

2020

How does this affect developing country libraries?


The S to N problem

Publishers face:High printing costs

High distribution costs

Leading to:Low distribution levels

Difficulty in obtaining submissions

Difficulty in maintaining regularity


Problems for scientists

•Scientists face difficulties in publishing in mainstream Western journals

•Local journals have poor distribution levels

Consequences

•Research largely unknown and unacknowledged

•Feeling of professional isolation
