Please find a partner to visit with. Today I am going to have you turn and talk about the many things we discuss. Today in education we know it’s very important that students have partners or groups and discuss their learning. there are many reasons for doing this. I am gong to have you find a partner so I can model what we do with students. However, it also allows you to talk out your learning, ask each other questions, and be sure you have time to think and answer questions.

You will hear these words often when working with our curriculum. Guaranteed means that we have a curriculum that is for every child no matter which school they attend. You will see the same things at Aurora or Eastwood or Harwood. There may be some teaching style differences, but the core learning target, the GOAL, is the same. Viable is that we have the time and resources for all children to learn that skill or part of the curriculum.

All grade levels use the same strategies, but it builds. Analyze and synthesize are nonfiction. Take a look at the amount of nonfiction. All Strategy means to use all strategies to teach, focusing on what aids in comprehension.

By building independent stamina and strong routines the first few weeks of school, you may possibly set yourself up to begin Guided Reading. We really want to encourage you do focus on stamina and not rush into groups. A strong foundation for independent work will lead to a more successful differentiation time in the future. Jan Richardson has a wonderful framework for guided reading. If you would like to reference her book, please let us know. Each building will also be receiving some NEW guided reading books around the beginning of October. These books have a wonderfully laid out plan to guide a group through instruction.

Here is a quick review on the pacing of your writer’s workshop block. It’s important to keep your lesson to less than 15 minutes, especially at the beginning of the year. You will not have all components in place until all procedures are set, but as soon as you are able, begin tracking the process, working in small group time, and conferring with students. When your workshop is in motion, these are the components you need in place. However, SHARE time should begin the first week! This is the motivation for your writers. People and students write for an audience, so be sure to make time for sharing each week. Either a little each day or maybe extra time on a Friday.
