Wilde Lake Village Board Vacancy
Are you interested in learning about your community? The Wilde Lake Village Board is seeking civic minded
residents to serve on the Board of Directors through April 30, 2017.
Applications are available at Slayton House or on the Wilde Lake Community Association website:
www.wildelake.org. Application deadline is October 3, 2016 by 5pm. Interviews will be conducted by the Village
Board on Monday, October 10, 2016. If you have any questions about the application process or Board

Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House The Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House offers ongoing exhibits featuring many well-known regional artists as well as local artists. Help HCAC Help Artists Many artists with studios and galleries in Ellicott City suffered substantial losses of artwork and studio space, severely impacting their ability to earn a living. To aid these artists on their long road to recovery, the Howard County Arts Council has established Re-create: Ellicott City Artist Relief Fund. Donate to Re-create: Ellicott City Artist Relief Fund on the Support the Arts page (please include Re-create: EC Artist Relief Fund in the “purpose” section). HCAC will be extending the current exhibit, Paint It! Ellicott City 2016, which showcases artwork created during the July 2016 Plein air event, until the end of September, with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this work donated to the fund. Several Paint It! artists have already generously agreed to donate 100% of their sales to help the relief effort.

Special Legislative Public Hearing The County Council will hold a Public Hearing for proposed legislation related to Downtown Columbia (DTC) on Thursday, September 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the George Howard Building (3430 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City). Due to time constraints, only persons who have not testified regarding these pieces of legislation will be allowed to speak; click here to sign up online. If you have previously testified on this legislation before the Council and wish to make additional comments, please submit written testimony to the Council via email. Full legislative texts are found on the County Council website
under Current Legislation.
Little Patuxent Parkway lane additions project to begin A Howard County construction project to add a deceleration lane, turn lane and traffic signal on Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia is expected to begin on or about Monday, September 19. An eastbound deceleration lane and a westbound left turn lane will be constructed in the vicinity of 10741 Little Patuxent Parkway to assist with traffic flow from a new Howard Community College parking garage. The project is expected to be completed by mid-November. Work zone traffic control devices will be in place to direct traffic as needed during construction hours, weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., as lane shifts and temporary lane closures are expected. Community Round Table Discussion on Merriweather Post Pavilion Sound ConcernsThe Howard County Council and members of the County's State Delegation will meet on Tuesday, September 20 at 7pm in the Banneker Room of the George Howard Building to discuss community concerns about sound monitoring and mitigation efforts at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. The public is welcome to attend; however, public testimony will not be taken at this meeting. Members of the public who wish to comment on this topic are encouraged to submit written comments to the County Council at [email protected] or the State Delegation at [email protected].
League of Women Voters of Howard County General Election Candidates’ Forum The League of Women Voters of Howard County invites you to our General Election Candidates’ Forum on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, 7:00 p.m.9:00 p.m., for the Board of Education and for the U.S. House of Representatives. The forum will be held in the Banneker Room in the George Howard Building at 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City, 21043. The event will be available live on Howard County Government Television (GTV) channel 44 on Verizon and channel 99 on Comcast. The forum will also be rebroadcast on GTV, dates and times TBD. It will also be available for viewing on the LWVHC website at lwvhc.wordpress.com.
Adult Volunteer Course Marshals Needed for Oct 1 Open Streets EventThe Horizon Foundation is seeking course marshals for its Oct. 1 Open Streets Event. Marshals help direct pedestrians and cyclists along the event route, which is closed to car traffic. School NewsInternational Student Exchange Seeking Host Family for HCC StudentThe International Student Exchange is looking for a Host Family for Nathan Becker, AFS international Exchange Student attending HCC. If you have a spare bedroom, and a heart for mentoring a young adult through this intercultural exchange experience, please contact Jenny Davis at [email protected] for more information. Host Families provide room & board, and treat the student as a member of the family. Nathan arrived mid August and has been with a temporary Welcome Family getting settled. Host families receive a small stipend to help offset the costs associated with hosting.

Through a wide variety of "learn to play" activities, we expose children to the areas of language arts, music, math, social development, and science. Columbia Association (CA) will host three auditions for its 14th annual
Hear My Voice Columbia Teen Idol Competition.
The audition dates are:
•Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7pm at the Youth and Teen Center at The Barn,
5853 Robert Oliver Place in the Oakland Mills Village Center
•Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7pm at Lord & Taylor in The Mall in Columbia, 10300 Little Patuxent Parkway

2016-2017 Village Board
The Board meets the first Monday of each month at 6:30pm at Slayton House. The Agenda for
The singing competition is open to Howard County performers from sixth grade through 12th grade. No music is
necessary for the auditions. Explicit lyrics are not allowed.
The top auditions will then move on to the semifinals on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7pm at Slayton House, 10400
Cross Fox Lane in the Wilde Lake Village Center. The best of the best will then advance to a performance on
Sunday, Oct. 9 at 3pm at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront.
2016 Organized Outdoor Walks
“Exploring Columbia on Foot” is once again being led by award-winning
environmental author Ned Tillman, who will guide discussions on the
nature, history and future of these wonderful outdoor settings, including
the plans for them and challenges they may face in the near future. All
walks will begin at 10 a.m. Registration is not required.
The remaining schedule of walks and meeting locations includes:
•Thursday, Sept. 22, Harper’s Choice – meet at Kahler Hall
•Thursday, Oct. 6, River Hill north – meet at Claret Hall
•Thursday, Oct. 20, Wilde Lake – meet at Slayton House
