Department of athletics

mission statement

The Department of Athletics and Recreation supports the College’s mission

by providing an experiential opportunity for individual development outside

of the traditional classroom setting. Backed by committed administrators,

coaches, and faculty, all students are challenged and encouraged to reach their

physical, intellectual, and social potential through participation in a broad-

based program of intercollegiate, club sport, intramural, and recreational offer-

ings.

In addition, The Department encourages the development of sportsmanship

and positive social attitudes in all constituents: including students,

faculty, staff, alumni, and spectators. We seek to establish and maintain

an environment that values the principles of fair play, amateur athletic

competition, cultural diversity, and gender equality . In this environment,

students are provided with experiences that honor effort and perseverance, re-

ward self-discipline, an d promote mutual understanding and respect.

In pursuant to the College’s mission, the department seeks to change

lives by engaging students in a variety of offerings that encourage a healthy

lifestyle and challenge participants to meet and exceed personal goals and ex-

pectations through sport.

Facilities

soFtball staDium Endicott’s state-of-the-art softball complex opened at the start

of the 2006 season and is located between the Post Center and the Stadium. Carved out of the

rock with a 100-foot stone cliff in center and right fields, the Stadium is home to the softball team and

includes two bull pens, dug-outs, a press box, and seating for 500.

FielD-turF staDium In the fall of 2003, Endicott opened a state-of-the-art athletic

field with the highly touted Field Turf playing surface –– complete with an oversized Daktronics

Scoreboard with multimedia capabilities and premium sound system. Nestled against a background of

classic New England landscape, this facility has seating for over 2,200 spectators. This beautiful facility

plays host to the Gulls football, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s lacrosse teams as

well as intramural sports.

the post sports science anD Fitness center

The 84,000-square-foot Center is home to Endicott’s Athletic Department and the School of

Sport Science and Fitness Studies. This impressive facility provides eight classrooms and laboratories

to support the academic departments. The seminar room has theater-style seating and computerized

cameras and smartboard equipment for internet and long distance learning. The Center contains the

1,200-seat MacDonald gymnasium and a separate recreation field house. These large activity spaces are

complemented by a newly expanded weight and fitness room, aerobics and dance studio, two

racquetball courts, elevated walking/jogging track, ten locker rooms, and a spacious training room.

tennis courts Endicott’s tennis courts are located on the South Campus behind the Van Loan

School of Graduate and Professional Studies, and adjacent to the Wylie Conference and Education Cen-

ter. The six courts are home to Endicott’s men’s and women’s tennis teams, as well as host to

summer instructional programs.

macDonalD Gymnasium The 1,200-seat MacDonald Gymnasium is home to both the men’s

and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. The gymnasium is also utilized for major College

events such as concerts, open houses, Founder’s Day, guest speakers, and job fairs. In addition, the gym

plays host to the top prep-school basketball players in the region through the New England Preparatory

School Athletic Council Class A Tournament. Over the course of an academic year, more than 75,000

people will leave their footprints inside the MacDonald Gymnasium.

north FielD The North Field is home to the Endicott baseball and field hockey teams. The

grass field is equipped with lights to allow play at any time of the day throughout the year. The

North Field also hosts Endicott’s intramural and recreational programs, area youth programs, and Nike’s

U.S. Sports and other summer camps.

baseballNeeding just one more win to capturetheir first TCCC Championship since2006, the Endicott baseball team fellto top-seeded Western New England5-4, squashing their hope of a fifthNCAA Tournament appearance in pro-gram history. The Blue and Green wenton to the ECAC New England Tourna-ment where they won their second ECAC

title after convincing victories over Becker and Suffolk.

The 2011 Gulls boasted a deep pitching rotation, stacked lineup, and leadership

from the coaching staff and senior captain ChrisDominguez (Braintree, Mass.) that led to a record-

setting 32-win season. The Gulls pitching staff ranked secondin the conference and was armed with the league’s Pitcher of the Year winner Ben-jamin Petrides (Belchertown, Mass.) who went a perfect 5-0 season with a 2.01 ERA in49.1 innings pitched. Several Endicott hitters impressed this past spring including rising senior Colin Sitarz (West Hartford, Conn.) who set career-highs in runs scored, RBIs, stolen bases, and triples while starting in right field for all 47 games.Endicott’s leadoff man and third baseman Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass.) set a programrecord for stolen bases with 29 and led all Gulls players with 49 runs scored.

men’s basketballEndicott reached the TCCC semifinals for the first time since the 2006-07 season afterposting a 17-10 overall record and an 8-5 mark in league play. Under second year headcoach Phil Rowe, the team’s 17 wins were five more than the previous season. As the#6 seed in the TCCC Tournament, the Gulls upset the #3 seed Roger Williams on theroad to advance into the semifinals, where they came within three minutes of reachingthe championship game, suffering a hard-fought 63-61 loss to Wentworth. First TeamAll-TCCC and D3Hoops.com All-Northeast Region honoree Lance Greene (Dorchester,Mass.) led the second-highest scoring offense in the conference with 15.0 points, 4.8rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. Junior center Erik Callo (Southington,Conn.) was the premiere shot-blocker of the TCCC, averaging 2.1 swats per game whilefreshman guard Lachlan Magee (Melbourne, Australia) blossomed in his rookie cam-paign with 13.2 points per game.

Women’s basketballSenior leadership lifted Endicott to a 17-10 overall record and a 10-3 mark in TCCCplay. Guard Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) was well-decorated for her efforts on-and-off the court during the 2010-11 season. Wright, who was named First Team All-TCCC, D3Hoops.com First Team All-Region, and ECAC Second Team All-New NewEngland, produced a team-best 18.3 points per game and was ranked in the top five inthe conference for several categories including scoring, steals, free-throw shooting, andthree-point shooting. Wright and fellow senior Ashley Vitale (Wilmington, Mass.) eachmade Endicott women’s basketball history by reaching the 1,000 career points mile-stone. Vitale was also named a First Team All-TCCC player for her dominating play atthe center position averaging 14.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Off the court,Wright was recognized for her superb performance in the classroom and in the community by being named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy, a Capital OneAcademic All-District First Team honoree, and the TCCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of theYear. The Gulls reached the TCCC Quarterfinals, qualified for the ECAC Tournament forthe seventh straight season and reached the semifinal game.

men’s anD Women’s cross countryThe women’s cross country team won the WNEC Invitational and had top five finishesat the Roger Williams Invitational and the TCCC Championship race en route to a com-petitive 2010 fall season. Endicott capped off their season with a solid finish at theNCAA New England Regional. Sophomore Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.), freshman JillianMendes (Waterbury Center, Vt.), and freshman Kira DiCaprio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) werefixtures at the top of the Gulls lineup in every race. Between the three runners, theycompiled 11 top-20 finishes. On the men’s side, junior Greg Payne (North Attleboro,Mass.) continued his career as Endicott’s top male runner, finishing in the top 15 in fiveraces in 2010. Payne finished in first place overall at the WNEC Invitational and seventhplace overall at the TCCC Championship. For his efforts, he was awarded All-TCCC sta-tus.

equestrianEndicott equestrian made program history in 2011 when one rider, sophomore AnnaPavlov (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), defeated all other riders in the special flat and fences classes to take the Zone 1, Region 2 Challenge Cup. This made Pavlov the top Openrider in Region 2. Two riders earned spots in the Zone 1 championships at MountHolyoke as Pavlov qualified with a win in Intermediate Flat and freshman Molly Shan-non (Vernon Rockville, Conn.) with a Reserve in a class of 11 in Walk-Trot-Canter. As ateam, Endicott also had their best finish in program history by receiving a banner and a ribbon for finishing second in Zone 1, Region 2. With many of the top

riders returning, the outlook for success in 2011-12 looks good for the Gulls.

FielD hockeyThe field hockey squad made deep runs at the TCCC and ECAC championships in 2010.The Gulls were tripped up by Western New England 2-1 in the TCCC Quarterfinals andthen reached the semifinals of the ECAC Tournament before falling to Plymouth State4-1. Endicott claimed their tenth straight season with at least ten wins, wrapping uptheir 2010 campaign with an 11-9 overall record. Six of those 10 victories came ongames decided by one goal including a 5-4 overtime win over TCCC rival Gordon and a2-1 double overtime triumph over non-conference foe St. Joseph’s in Maine. For thesecond year in-a-row, senior forward Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md.) earned a spot onthe All-TCCC First Team after tallying 27 points on 10 goals and seven assists whilestarting in all 20 games for the Blue and Green. Senior defender Delia McDermott(Shaker Heights, Ohio) earned All-TCCC Second Team honors by helping her team post a2.09 goals against average. Also earning an All-TCCC Second Team award was sopho-more forward Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) who led the team with 13 goals andthree assists.

FootballUnder eighth year head coach JB Wells, the football team fired on all cylinders in 2010with their offense producing record breaking numbers and their defense shutting downthe opposition all season long. Their efforts as a team resulted in a 9-3 overall record, a6-1 NEFC Boyd Division mark, a NEFC Championship, and a berth into the NCAA Tour-nament – all of which were program firsts. Coach Wells was recognized as Coach ofthe Year by the New England Football Writers and the Gridiron Club of Greater Bostonfollowing Endicott’s historic season. Benchmark wins over Framingham State in threeovertimes, Salve Regina and Curry in fourth quarter comebacks, Western New Englandto decide the Boyd Division winner, and Maine Maritime Academy in the NEFC Champi-onship all highlighted Endicott’s season to remember. Junior Kevin Eagan (West Hart-ford, Conn.) headlined the 12 Gulls that earned NEFC All-Division honors and thedefensive lineman won not only NEFC Defensive Player of the Year, but also the ECACDIII North Division Defensive Player of the Year, a New England Football Writers Associ-ation DII/III All-Star nod and D3Football.com All-East Region Second Team honors.Running back Mike Lane (Medfield, Mass.), quarterback Phil Konopka (Shelton, Conn.),and kicker Dylan Rushe (Palos Verdes, Calif.) earned their fair share of hardware for En-dicott’s balanced offensive attack. Lane rushed for 1,247 yards and seven touchdowns,Konopka passed for 2,159 yards and 21 touchdowns and Rushe converted all 39 of hisextra-point attempts while making 14-of-19 field goal attempts.

men’s GolFOne year removed from winning the TCCC and ECAC Championships, the Endicott golfteam returned to the links and nearly repeated as champions. The Gulls placed secondas a team in both tournaments behind top-10 performances from senior AndrewLaRocque (Averill Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Jackson Wyman (Falmouth, Maine).LaRocque completed his senior season by earning medalist honors at the UNE Invita-tional for the second year in-a-row for being the tournament’s top finisher. Wyman,who had three top-10 finishes in his rookie year, made five top-10 appearances in2010, including second place nods at the UNE and ECAC Tournaments and a fourthplace finish at the University of Southern Maine Invitational. Sophomore DJ Bennettshowed flashes of brilliances for the Gulls, logging a fourth place finish at UNE and afifth place finish at Southern Maine.

men’s lacrosseFor the third time in program history, Endicott reached the sec-ond round of the NCAA DIII Men’s Lacrosse Tournamentafter winning the 2011 TCCC Championship. The Blueand Green played top-ranked team in the nation,Salisbury University, and nearly pulled anupset with a hard-fought 12-8 loss. Priorto their NCAA Tournament run, the Gulls captured a stunning 13-12 overtime victory over Western New England, marking the seventh conferencetitle in program history. Led by 11All-TCCC selections, Endicott rolled to a9-1 record in conference playand finished with a 16-5 overallstanding. As usual, the Gullscompeted in a tough non-conference schedule wherethey registered wins overSpringfield, Williams, andTufts, who was ranked #1 in the country before losing9-8 to Endicott. Senior ChrisCotter (Lordship, Conn.) led

Jack Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a team-high 28 assists. Senior defenders AndrewPochebit (Portland, Maine), Robert Crossett (Katonah, N.Y.), Kevin Downes (Cheshire,Conn.) and Jeff Abbott (Hinesburg, Vt.) combined to cause 131 turnovers in 2011. Cotterand Pochebit were named USILA All-Americans while Pochebit, Crossett and Curtisearned NEILA All-New England status.

Women’s lacrosseWomen’s lacrosse continued their streak of consecutive conference championships byadding their sixth title in-a-row in 2011. After dropping their regular season meetingwith Western New England, the Gulls exacted revenge on the Golden Bears by winning10-4 in the TCCC Championship to earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament. Endicott’sseason ended in the first round of the national championship tournament with a lossto Tufts. The Blue and Green finished their spring season with a 14-7 overall mark anda 10-1 record against league opponents. Their one conference loss broke a streak of 43straight conference victories dating back to 2007. Led by top point-getter and juniorattacker Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.), who scored 66 goals and assisted on 19more, Endicott proved to be the highest scoring offense in the conference. SophomoreHolly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) and senior Kellie Cunningham (Derry, N.H.) each con-tributed with 63 and 41 goals, respectively. DeShaw and Davis each made the IWLCAAll-Region Team. On defense, senior Brittany Kane (Scarborough, Maine) and fresh-man Kelsey Barnes (Brookside, N.J.) combined for 40 caused turnovers and 75 ground-balls. In total, eight players were recognized by the TCCC for their outstanding effortsthis season by being named to the All-TCCC team.

men’s soccerThe Gulls reached the TCCC Tournament for the first time since the 2006 season following a 6-10-1 season in 2010. Endicott went 6-4-1 in their final 11 games to so-lidify a spot in the conference playoffs. The Blue and Green exited in the first round ofthe tournament, falling to top seed and eventual champion Nichols 2-0 in the quarterfinals. The season was highlighted on October 13th when Gulls senior Bryan Lee (Rockport, Mass.) scored a game-winning goal with 0.4 seconds left in double over-time against Curry to give Endicott a 2-1 win. Lee went on to earn Second Team All-TCCC honors for his leadership and defensive presence in the Gulls backfield. Freshmanforward Alex Elia (Somers, Conn.) led the team with four goals, including two game-winners against Anna Maria and New England College. In 2011, the Gulls turn to newhead coach Joe Calabrese to catapult the men’s soccer team to playoff success andtheir first conference title since 1999.

Women’s soccerEndicott’s efforts to reach the NCAA Tournament for an eighth consecutive season fellpenalty kicks short as the Gulls suffered a hard-fought defeat to Roger Williams in theTCCC championship match. The Blue and Green did, however, make a deep run at theECAC Championship with shutout wins over Suffolk and UMass Boston before falling 3-1 to Keene State in the title match. Endicott’s 17 wins in 2010 marked their eight sea-son in-a-row with at least 15 wins and their 14th straight year with at least 10.Several Gulls earned individual accolades including seniors Kayla Corbett (Danvers,Mass.) and Victoria Hunt (Cumberland, R.I.), junior Colleen Pepin (Fairhaven, Mass.) andsophomore Caitlin Peters (Salem, N.H.) who all earned All-TCCC status. Corbett, Pepinand Peters each garnered Second Team All-Region by the NSCAA as well. Pepin led theteam with 25 goals and eight assists with Corbett chipping in with 12 goals and fourassists. Freshman keeper Natalie Wyrsch (Dover, N.H.), in her first season between theposts for the Gulls, sported a 1.05 goals against average while making 79 saves.

soFtballThe softball program has been a model of consistency since head coach Mark

Veilleux took over the program in 1995. Twelve conference champi-onships later, the Gulls are one of the top teams in the region and

can be found in the NCAA Regional Tournament every season.This year’s squad, who won their ninth straight TCCC title, fea-tured senior leadership infused with freshman talent that re-sulted in a 36-8 overall record with a 23-1 mark againstTCCC opponents. Senior pitcher Jenna Bortolotti (Milton,Mass.), recognized as the TCCC’s Pitcher of the Year, setdown opposing batters en route to a 16-8 record inthe circle. Fellow seniors Ashley Wright (Merrimack,N.H.) and Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.)had career years with Wright batting over .400with a team-high 15 stolen bases and Hovhaness-ian scoring 39 times and knocking in 31 runners.Freshman Jennie Lacolla (Stoneham, Mass.) re-ceived numerous accolades including Player andRookie of the Year from the TCCC after batting.451 with 52 runs, 44 RBIs, and 22 extra basehits, including eight homeruns. Fellow newcomer,shortstop Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn.) led theteam with 45 RBIs and tied with Lacolla andsophomore Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) fora team-high 55 hits.

men’s tennisUnder first-year head coachLauren MacKay, the men’s tennisteam surpassed their win total froma season ago with an 11-8 overall record.The Gulls, who earned the #4 seed in the TCCCTournament after posting an 8-3 mark in league play, soared past Gordon in the quarterfinals before falling just short of their first ever TCCC Championship appearancewith a 5-2 loss to Nichols in the semifinals. Several Endicott student-athletes hadmemorable years including first-year player Zach Arpey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) whowas named TCCC Rookie of the Year after an undefeated season in singles play. Arpeywas a perfect 17-0 in singles and was also named Second Team Singles All-TCCC for hisefforts. Arpey and #1 doubles partner Devon Locke (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) were hon-ored as First Team Doubles All-TCCC players after going 12-7 as a duo in 2011. Lockeand sophomore Olivier Joggi (Stoneham, Mass.) were also recognized by the TCCC asHonorable Mention Singles players.

Women’s tennisFirst year head coach Lauren MacKay brought the women’s tennis team back to theconference playoff tournament for the 16th straight season as the Gulls went 8-6overall with an 8-3 league record. Endicott suffered a defeat in the quarterfinals ofthe TCCC Tournament, falling to rival Colby-Sawyer 5-3 but several players achievedindividual accolades following another successful season. Junior Kate Cioffi (Essex,Vt.), who already earned First Team Singles All-TCCC honors in both her freshman andsophomore seasons, once again was awarded First Team Singles status. She went 9-2at the #1 singles spot. Cioffi and fellow junior Emily Annis (Hampton, N.H.) werenamed All-TCCC Honorable Mention for posting a 5-2 record at the #1 doubles posi-tion.

men’s volleyballThe men’s volleyball team rattled off their third straight season with at least 20 wins,posting a 24-14 overall record and 14-2 mark in the NECVA New England Division.Endicott’s second place finish in the division, along with key wins over regional powerhouses MIT, Emmanuel, and Lasell resulted in a spot in the NECVA Playoffs forthe straight fifth year. As the #11 seed in the tournament, the Gulls faced the #6 seedEmmanuel but lost 3-1. Endicott went on to play in the ECAC Tournament as the host#1 seed and made the championship match before falling to #2 seed Newbury 3-1.Junior libero Andrew Slocum (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) earned a spot on the NECVA All-Con-ference First Team after recording career-highs in digs (285), digs per set (2.34), andreceptions percentage (.970). Five Gulls earned All-New England Division awards fromthe NECVA with Slocum, Zeke Kubisch (Bethlehem, N.Y.), Matt Devendorf (Glastonbury,Conn.), Jeremy Siden (Natick, Mass.) and Travis Netherton (Waukegan, Ill.) all garneringrecognition. Siden led the team in kills (318), Netherton in blocks (122), while Kubischand Devendorf each eclipsed the 250 kill mark.

Women’s volleyballFor the seventh season in-a-row, the Endicott women’s volleyball team found them-selves in the TCCC Championship, but the Gulls were unable to capture their fifth con-ference title. Endicott lost to Roger Williams in straight sets, then went on to theECAC Championship final where they came up short against Keene State, ending their2010 campaign with a 24-16 mark. The Blue and Green continued their TCCC dominance in 2010 with a 9-1 record, improving their standing against league foes to 63-4 since the team’s first conference championship in 2004. Five players earnedAll-TCCC honors including First Team honoree, senior Brittney Phillips (Sudbury, Mass.).Phillips, also named a NEWVA All-New England in 2010, set a single-season Endicottrecord for kills (435) and finished her career third on the all-time list with 1,299. Fel-low senior Amy Grigg (Vernon, Conn.), a TCCC Honorable Mention, became the pro-gram’s all-time leading blocker, setting the record at 459 career stops at the net.Junior setter Sarah Allshouse (Berthoud, Colo.) and junior right side hitter Elyse Bar-bour (Greenville, R.I.) were each named to the All-TCCC Second Team while sophomore outside hitter Falyn Torelli (Pelham, N.Y.) was given an Honorable Mention.

cheerleaDinGThe cheerleading squad was a fixture at home football and basketball gamesthroughout the year providing phenomenal spirit for the Blue and Green. The Gullshave made plans to expand their efforts for the 2011-12 academic year. They will doso under new head coach Marisa Mandracchia who plans on leading the Lady Gullsback into regional competition. Look for the squad to make an impact once again atour varsity events in the fall of 2011.

creWThe crew team worked towards another New England Collegiate Rowing League(NECRL) Championship with a strenuous winter conditioning program, and their ef-forts paid off as the women’s varsity 4+ and the women’s novice 4+ each captured the NECRL Championship. The varsity squad beat the second place Brandeisboat by a full 20 seconds, while Endicott’s novice crew won by 15 seconds over Wentworth in the championship race. On the men’s side, the novice 4+rowed the fourth fastest time on the river at the NECRL Championship but came up just short of winning the race. Endicott’s mixed roster boats also had stellar finishes with both varsity and novice 4+ taking second place. At the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia – against some of the toughest competition in NCAA Di-vision II, Division III, and club programs in the country – the Gulls held their own in the women’s varsity 4+ and men’s novice 4+ races . The Gulls have theirsights set on repeat performances at the NECRL Championship and appearances at the Dad Vail Regatta.

DanceThe dance team competed against ten other college dance teams from New York,Connecticut, and Massachusetts for the regional University Dance Association title.After their experience at the UDA Nationals in January, the Gulls were ready to takeon the challenge and won the regional title for the Division II and III Open Jazz Divi-sion for the first time in program history. Endicott also won the best dressed awardat the competition. The Dance Team far and away surpassed their accomplishments from the 2009 and 2010 seasons when they finished in secondplace at Regionals. With the UDA regional title in their possession, the EndicottDance Team now looks ahead to the 2011-12 academic year as they plan to make a splash on the national stage.

Women’s GolFThe women’s golf program seeks to attract female student-athletes interested in thegame. The program has the great fortune of competing at Essex County Club, one ofthe premier golf courses in the country. Coach Coan assumed responsibility for di-recting the program in April of 2010. He is committed to working with the student-athletes to enhance their skills, knowledge, and enjoyment of the game.

men’s ice

hockeyThe men’s icehockey programwrapped up the2010-11 campaignwith a 12-10-2 overallrecord under first yearhead coach Mark O’Meara.The Gulls finished 2-6 in thehighly competitive NECHA PatriotEast division and showcased key winsover the top two teams, Northeastern andBryant. The Blue and Green climbed to a number five ranking in the northeast by theACHA after a 4-1 stretch in early November. At season’s end, the Gulls captured a number 12 ranking out of the 44 Division II ACHA club hockey teams.Three players – junior Matthew Zimmerman (South Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshmen Cameron MacLeod (Hampton Falls, N.H.) and Ryan Pratt (Waltham, Mass.)– were selected to play for the NECHA team in the all-star challenge. A number ofcontributing underclassmen will return for the 2011-12 season as the Gulls look toreturn to postseason play after a two year hiatus.

Women’s ice hockeyIn just its second season, the women’s ice hockey team went 4-3-1, recording wins overMount Holyoke, UMass Lowell, Wheaton, and Harvard. Seniors Sarah McMahon (Wilm-ington, Mass.), Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.), and Erin Shattuck (North Chelmsford,Mass.) were essential to the Gulls success this year and leave the program in the ablehands of a talented group of underclassmen. The Blue and Green will look to capitalizeon a veteran core of players as they welcome a new recruiting class to Beverly.

sailinGThe sailing club has just received a new home at Winter Island in Salem, Mass. just afew miles from campus. This relationship was developed with Sail Salem and is anexciting new partnership that the sailing team looks to build upon. The team seeksto attract both male and female student-athletes interested in learning to sail. En-dicott is part of the New England Collegiate Sailing Association and plans to boast astrong new campaign for the upcoming year!
