Overlooking Padilla Bay, this Fidalgo Island residence seeks to address issues of building consumption and energy dependence by questioning current sustainable trends and typical overreaching solutions. This home demonstrates sustainable design does not require significant investment in high-tech building systems, but simply a carefully designed and regionally appropriate building envelope that performs in its surroundings. The building envelope was designed for the mild Pacific Northwest climate and will neither gain nor lose

heat when the outdoor air temperature is in the passive zone (between 55° and 75°), putting the building in passive mode and requiring no heating or cooling. Natural ventilation will serve to provide occupant comfort within the passive zone with the release of warm air and drawing in cool air. This home trends in the opposite direction of many sustainable solutions common today by not relying on so-called ‘efficient’ systems, but rather omits the very systems that are consuming energy. It’s an example that regional design, not high-tech systems, play a significant role in reducing energy dependence.

Street at the transition between detached single-family homes to the historic downtown. This location is ideal because of its close proximity to the new transit center, 2nd Street, new grocery store and other existing and new amenities. This full-block development provides a mix of urban housing types and unit sizes, including rowhouses and apartments. These housing types are marketed to be desirable for a mix of ages and economic standing to encourage population of the historic downtown.

The Dalles’ historic downtown exists in a state of economic stagnation with a large stock of vacant commercial and mixed-use buildings. Much of the economic focus has been transferred to the box store development to the northwest of downtown. Populating the downtown through development of residential projects is essential to providing any substantial economic stimulus to spur business and community investment. Additionally, a variety of housing options needs to be made available to suit the demands of different user groups. This project proposes a full-block housing development at the corner of 3rd and Union

with its main entry along St. Mary Avenue, completing the network of public spaces on the block. The new entry will provide a dynamic and sheltered space of similar character to the WAG’s east entrance along Memorial Boulevard. Accounting for the importance of the southeast corner of the block and its relationship to the Manitoba Legislative Building, primary program spaces have been located at this corner with openings directing views. The addition will provide a contemporary form that takes cues from the WAG to provide a complimentary and varied addition.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG), which is Canada’s oldest civic art gallery, plans to erect an addition to its building on Memorial Boulevard in downtown Winnipeg. The purpose of the addition is twofold. First is to provide an appropriate home, display and research environment for its internationally renowned collection of contemporary Inuit art, comprising sculptures, drawings, prints and textiles. The collection is the largest one of its kind anywhere in the world. The second purpose is to provide new and improved facilities for the Gallery’s Studio Art and Learning programs. The IALC addition will provide new public open space on the southern end of the WAG block

public to provide much-needed space for neighborhood functions. This community room is a multi-level flexible space to accommodate a variety of functions either in the main room or its accessory rooms. Below-grade parking will be provided for residents of the building. Residential units will consist of a variety of unit types ranging from studios to 2-bedroom lofts to attract a variety of price-points and residents. An outdoor terrace is provided at the southern facade for residents’ use. This project serves as a catalyst for future neighborhood development and re-envisions Slabtown as a desirable Portland neighborhood.

Slabtown is an under-utilized industrial district in northwest Portland that will be transformed into a mixed-use neighborhood which supports housing, employment, open space and community amenities. A public square and its surrounding mixed-use buildings will be developed at the intersection of NW 21st Ave. and Pettygrove St. with commercial spaces provided at the street-level and a mix of office and residential above. The design of the square’s northeast building takes advantage of its unique location between the square and park with the use of building setbacks and an articulated balcony-bay curtain wall system. A multi-purpose community room and accessory spaces will be made available to the

Maidan in KandaharKandahar, Afghanistan

Project Details:• Dense urban fabric in

consideration of hot climate• Central village courtyard

includes mosque and accessory worship spaces

• Courtyard and mosque form the hub of the village

• Mosque designed with contemporary aesthetic

Page 47: Eric Nielsen Portfolio

Urban developments of the region are traditionally composed of dense courtyard housing. Village life is generally secluded, with privacy as a treasured commodity. Aside from cultural privacy, this dense urban fabric allows for comfortable living in the hot, arid climate by protecting inhabitants from the heat through mass and narrow streets. Primarily a pedestrian development, parking is found closely within the entrance to confine automobiles to the perimeter of the village and out of the pedestrian streets. Passing along from the entrance area, the visitor will make their way into the focal point of the village: the

central maidan. It is a place where the village comes together through the routine of daily life. At the center of the maidan is a modest-sized mosque designed with the intent of creating a contemporary and sculptural place of worship. Abiding closely to design principles of the region regarding sunlight, airflow, and cultural privacy, the mosque will function as a surreal place of worship.

Prefabricated Disaster Relief Dwelling

Size / Footprint: 450 sq. ft.Building Vitals:• Designed to provide quick,

permanent housing to a family of four following a disaster

• Detailed for ease of assembly• Energy and resource

independent• Lightweight materials for ease

of transport and construction

Page 49: Eric Nielsen Portfolio

As the intensity of weather increases, so too do its effects on the human population. Witnessed in recent years, large-scale devastation can occur to nearly any major human settlement. The need for immediate housing is important, but even more so is the need for more long-term, semi-permanent housing solutions. Providing a displaced family with stable housing will soften the effects of the disaster while helping with recovery and a continuation into progressive life. The goal of this project is to design a prefabricated dwelling for a family of four to be supplied and

assembled in disaster relief situations. Requirements were to use easily assembled, lightweight materials which could be combined to create an energy and resource independent home. The core of the floor, wall, and roof assemblies is 5/8” corrugated OSB with blown fiber insulation. This structural OSB would adequately provide for load and insulating requirements, while maintaining a high strength-to-weight ratio. Solar panels, along with water collection and recycling would be provided to ensure the possibility of comfortable off-grid living.

The Meat-Packing District of Manhattan is quickly becoming the new center for fashion, trends, and progressive exchange of ideas. The goal of this project is to create an urban wedge building that would serve as the district’s center for fashion exhibition and education. The program for the Exchange includes a main gallery, offices, library, auditorium, apartments, and a runway. An important aspect of the design was to allow for plentiful amounts of natural lighting while addressing the

lengthiness and minimal width of the site. At the center of the Exchange is a large atrium, garden, and cafe space giving an open and natural social atmosphere. Winding up through the atrium is a smooth spiral stair drawing the visitor out of the depths of the building, past the focal point of the runway, and into the sky. Careful use of mezzanines, along with an open curtain-wall facade, were crucial in vertically opening up the interior, allowing for a spacious and comfortable interior environment.
