    Crisis pregnancy centers/pregnancy resource centers

are vital to communities. They are places wheremothers and fathers dealing with an unplannedpregnancy can get accurate information about their op-tions. They provide many services such as free pregnancy tests, diapers and baby supplies, support groups, counseling, adoption support, and parenting classes.

Holding a Diaper Drive on your campus will helpsupport your local crisis pregnancy center and the womenand children they serve.

A diaper drive is an ideal event for student pro-lifegroups. It costs very little and doesnt require a large number of volunteers. It is a good rst event for new clubs, since its not controversial and, thus, notintimidating. Its also a positive event that shows young pro-lifers offering support to women who have chosen life.

The following pages give you a step-by-step guide on how to organize

and execute a successful diaper drive. If you have any further questions on this project or anything else, do nothesitate to contact Students for Life of America at 703.351.6280 or [email protected].

Also, please contact SFLA about your event and share with us how it went. We would love to hear from you!

Thank you for all that you do for Life,

    5 Steps to Running a

    Successful Diaper Drive

    1:

Easy steps that will help your group make a difference in hundreds of lives.

    Contact a local Crisis Pregnancy

Center (CPC). Introduce yourself, your group, and explain your plan. Ask what size diapers are most needed, as well as what other supplies are needed. Ask for literature to hand out on cam-pus. Leave your contact info with them.

For a list of local centers:

    http://www.pregnancycenters.org/

2:Get permission to have a daily

collection site on campus.Contact the student activities of ce.Say you want to collect baby suppliesfor low-income families, single moms, etc. Reserve a well-traf cked spot for a

week. Reserve the spot for as much of the day aspossible.

Also contact Greek houses andRAs. Say you would like to keep a

donation box at their house/dormfor collecting these supplies.

    Be creative. Think of other

    places for the

donation boxes. Itis important, however, to

make sure all boxes are insupervised locations.

It takes an average of 90 diapers perweek to keep a baby changed every

one to three hours and a toddler everythree to four hours.

3: A dvertise! Appoint one of your

members to be the public rela-tions coordinator. This personsresponsibilities are the following:

    a. Post yers. Flyers shouldinclude some sort of baby picture as

well as the days, times, and locationsof the drop off boxes.

    b. Contact charitable groups oncampus. Circle K groups, the social

work department, ministry groups etc. Ask for their help, even if only formaterial donations and advertisements.

    c. Advertise on Facebook. Getan account. Make a group for yourclub. (If you dont already have a

Facebook group, create one. It is anexcellent way to recruit.) After logging in, scroll to the bottom of your pro lepage. Theres a link that reads adver-tise. Click on it and youll be broughtto a page where you can create a yer.

There is a small fee, but your yer will be displayed thousands of times.

    d. Send a press release to localand campus media (TV, radio, andprint). Call, email, fax and/or dropoff a release to all local media outlets.Do this 3-7 days prior to the start of the drive. Follow up with another

press release and a phone call the day

of the drive. The release should fol-low the basic structure in the samplerelease provided. Before the event, the release should state the who, what,

where, when, and why of the event.Remember: Success depends on

how well you publicize your drive. Advertise early and often.

An average diapering length diapering period is 2.5 years or 130weeks for a total of over 11,700 diaper changes!

5:Make your collection table stand out. Create a banner. Have some infoabout your group on the table (such as yers for your next meeting).

Set out brochures for the CPC. Make a sign, listing the cost of diapers.Obviously, have a large box. Ask for boxes from Sams Club, Costco,

Wal-Mart, and local grocery stores. A baby crib could also be used in place of the box and would draw more attention.

Label your boxes: Diaper Drive Drop-Off

(Dates of the drive)If assistance needed, please call (your phone #)

Disposable diapers cost an averageof $.35 per change.

    4:Create a schedule. Have members

volunteer during their breaks(especially lunch and dinner) to sit atyour collection table. Again, ensurea highly populated spot. Also, decide

where the donations will be kept untilthe end of the week.

    Remember keep all boxessupervised.

    After the collection:

    1. Send another press release tothe media. Highlight the

success your group had with thecollection and plug the CPC youdonated to.

    2. Write letters. Send a thank you letter to the school and anyclub, Greek house, ordepartment that helped. Thank each for its support. Say what asuccess the drive was and howmuch you collected (if sizable).

Plug the CPC in your lettersby mentioning the good work they do. Plug your group bywriting that you are passionateabout saving the unborn andhelping families that choose life.

    3. Drop off the supplies to theCPC.
