ICCUS CONFERENCE ISUNDER THE PATRONAGE OF

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the international Carbon Capture, Utilizationand Storage (iCCUS) Conference to be held on 25-26 February 2020 at theFour Seasons Hotel in Riyadh, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The conferenceis co-organized under the patronage of the Minister of Energy of the Kingdom ofSaudi Arabia and the Minister of Oil of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Our world is faced with the dual challenge of providing access to clean andaffordable energy to billions of people, while ensuring environmental sustainabilityand stewardship. Despite the remarkable progress of renewable energies in theglobal energy mix and the significant improvement in energy efficiency, globalgreenhouse gas emissions have been fluctuating over past years. The urgencyto act on climate, combined with the scale of ambitions in carbon emissionsreduction require a paradigm shift in the way we approach climate policies andstrategies. We must dispose of our conventional notion of a linear economygrowth model as a once-through system and adopt the principles of a circularcarbon economy model which value all options to mitigate carbon dioxideemissions into the atmosphere.

CCUS is a key technology for removing, reusing, and recycling carbon dioxideemissions - addressing multiple dimensions of the circular carbon economymodel. CCUS technology has come a long way with projects in power andindustry, and continues to demonstrate its technical feasibility. There are 18large scale CCUS plants in operation across the globe, capturing and storingaround 30 million tonnes of CO2 per year. However, according to many studiesfrom the IPCC and IEA, the world would need to capture, store or use around1000 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030. Realizing fully the value ofCCUS remains a global challenge: overall costs need to be reduced, globalstorage capacity needs to be consolidated and appropriate policy instrumentsneed to be implemented, in order to ensure widespread deployment of CCUStechnology and meet its global climate change ambitions.

The conference will focus on the role of CCUS as a key enabler for the circularcarbon economy. I hope this conference will contribute to improving CCUSrecognition as a vital technology for achieving climate goals.

I look forward to welcoming you in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

COORSTEK MEMBRANE SCIENCES

Ceramic proton conductors are electrochemical membranes that perform energy conversions with near zero energy loss. While highly scalable, the microthermal integration and elimination of process steps make membrane systems economical even at small volumes due to its high efficiency. These factors alter the equation to produce affordable hydrogen from hydrocarbons with direct integration of CCS. With use of additional electricity, hydrogen can even be made from steam alone. And chemicals can be made from CO2. Reversing the membrane to operate as a fuel cell, electric power can be generated from ammonia – with near zero energy loss.

GEOSTOCK

GEOSTOCK is specialized in design, construction and operation of storages in salt caverns, aquifers & depleted fields and mined caverns. GEOSTOCK is one of the main company for underground storages engineering and the most global one. Our experience has mostly been gained working on gaseous and liquid hydrocarbon storage, and we are transferring it to underground storage solutions for renewable energy storage (hydrogen or compressed air, and CO2 geological storage through our subsidiary GEOGREEN): in the past 5 years, we have working for a dozen of industrial projects, and we are currently part of 6 collaborative R&D projects.
