Welcome back for Term 3 I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all of our staff, parents and students for Term 3, 2019. We have just passed the halfway point in the school year and I trust that everyone has now had an enjoyable and restful break.

Our class teachers have commenced teaching our Term 3 units of work based on the Australian Curriculum. The curriculum covered at Ferny Grove gives our students genuine opportunities to engage and connect with high quality learning each and every day. The beginning of the term provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their progress from the previous semester and reset their learning goals for the term ahead.

Next week, our booking system for parent teacher interviews will open. I would encourage you to make a booking to meet with your child’s teacher and discuss the progress that your child has made over the year and the plan ahead for the future. It’s important to have a strong overview about what your child is learning and how they’re progressing. The parent/teacher interview is a great way to be well informed.

This term is an exciting term for our school as we have a wide range of school and school community events taking place. Later in the term our school will undertake a full school review process coordinated by the School Improvement Unit and this will help inform our strategic planning for the future. Other events include our Trivia

Night and the Expressive Arts week.

We look forward to once again developing strong partnerships with you to ensure your child experiences positive growth in their education.

This term, as in the past, the newsletter will be prepared and distributed to families once per fortnight.

Website, Facebook & QSchools app With the new term starting, it is important for families and staff to keep up-to-date with the latest information from their school. Please make sure the office has the most up-to-date contact details including your correct mobile phone number and email address.

Also, our school website is regularly updated with news items and important dates. Our web address is www.fernygrovess.eq.edu.au. In addition, the QSchools app provides an easy way to access vital school information, including latest news, events and newsletters.

Lastly, the QSchools app now allows for push notifications to deliver essential information directly to a device, including emergency alerts and important updates.

Date Claimers

Welcome back to Semester 2 and a big welcome to our new students and families. I hope you’re all settling well. Term 3 is a big term for our middle years students. I’ve detailed some of the key events below: Summer Sport and Recreation commences Friday 9 August for all year 4-6 students. The year 4’s are very excited to be able to finally participate! All students will make their preference this week and groups will be created based on their 1st or 2nd preference in the coming weeks. If your child is unable to participate in Summer Sport for any reason please email me directly so that we can discuss, as there is no stay at school option.

Year 5 and 6 students have commenced Footsteps this week, a dance program as part of The Arts curriculum. Year 4 have their Bush Neighbours incursions coming up, bringing our local environment into the classroom and Year 5 have their NASA/GOMA excursion. How fortunate are our students to experience such authentic learning.

Year 5 and 6 camps are early next term and payment needs to be finalised this term. If your child is not attending could you please alert the office ASAP. Alternative arrangements will be made for your child to attend school throughout the duration of the camp.

Each year we host the students from Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School in Kyoto, Japan. This year they will be with us from Monday 19th August through to Friday 30th August. Thank you to the many families who are homestays for the students. Year 5 students will again act as buddies and we will seek volunteers soon. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to have a leadership responsibility in preparation for the leadership accreditation process that will commence this term.

Expressive Arts Week is week 9 this term and showcases performing and visual arts at our school. Students will have the opportunity to enter the art competition and Talent Quest and participate in classroom activities. During this week we will have the whole school incursion, African Beat. Can’t wait for this! Thursday 12th September is the Showcase concert evening with the opening of the art exhibition and instrumental/choral music concert. Pop it in your diaries now.

Bookings for parent/teacher interviews will open soon. Although you are welcome to make appointments to

speak with any of our staff throughout the year, this is the best time to do so.

Best of luck to our year 5 and 6 debaters in the Queensland Debating Union competition in the coming weeks and a huge thankyou to their coaches for preparing them.

A huge term ahead!

Defence news

Welcome back to term 3! I hope students have had a restful and fun filled break and are ready for another semester of learning and fun. This term will be jam packed with NAIDOC Week, National Science Week, Expressive Arts week and so much more. As part of the DSM program, students can look forward to another Defence students’ activity in week 8 and we will also be organising a social catch up for Defence parents before the term ends - We look forward to seeing you then.

Changes to DSM Program for Semester 2

As you may already know, due to family commitments, I will be making a temporary change to my current working hours commencing in term 3. I will be reducing the number of days I’m at school to Mondays and Tuesdays. I am pleased to inform you that Drew Fricker will be stepping into the Defence School Mentor (DSM) role to ensure Defence students can access support on the days I’m not at school (Wednesday to Friday). Drew has been a staff member at FGSS for the past 8 years and has developed very positive relationships with staff and students alike. I am excited for the contribution Drew will make to supporting our Defence students, as he brings a very positive male perspective to the DSM role.

Jess De la Jara, Defence School Mentor [email protected]

Hi all,

I feel very excited and humbled by the opportunity allowed to me, working in conjunction with Jessica, in the role of DSM. It is an important position supporting those students at school who have parents sometimes away and/or are moving schools often, through their junior years. I will ensure that I do my very best to continue the good work, support and communication you have enjoyed from Jessica. I look forward to meeting you all, hopefully in the next term.

Drew Fricker, Defence School Mentor [email protected]

To contact us please email Jess: [email protected] or Drew: [email protected] .

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Welcome back from your holidays, I hope you had a restful break.

Keep your eye out for our NAIDOC week info display. We have put together a collection of interesting facts. Pop in and see what you can discover.

OSH Care news

The children and staff had a great vacation care. They went on two excursions - Tour of City Hall and a visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. The children thoroughly enjoyed the excursions. They loved seeing all the animals at Lone Pine. We also had two incursions - a rock climbing wall and the children made retro vinyl record clocks. The children were involved in a wide variety of activities including cooking, painting, arts and craft, fitness program, slime making plus lots more. A great time had by all!

'Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all' Helen Keller

The first week of the holidays was spent with two awesome students from Ferny Grove on an adventure camp at Mapleton. There is something special about being away in the great outdoors learning and experiencing with others and spending time doing exciting activities. This is often where really good relationships are built and wonderful lifelong memories formed. I know for me that is true from my childhood.

The photos are some of the madness and fun that happen when we are away. These two students I am particularly proud of - Coen and Cale. Their behaviour and thoughtfulness, sense of fun and adventure made me feel very proud to be their Chappy. Well done boys on being the best version of yourselves and participating in everything.

Week two was spent at a staff conference and networking with many other Chaplains from all over the state. This is always a great opportunity to get new ideas and see what happens in other schools.

Each year you can hear first hand of what Chaplaincy looks like by coming along to the Chaplaincy Fundraising dinner. It is happening in a few weeks time on August 1. Please consider getting some of your friends together and supporting the event.

Did you know that last year was the first time we had any parents at all at this event since I've been here? I make this comment because one of the parents mentioned to me she was surprised as she thought lots of parents would be there.

I encourage you to think if there is a way you could be a part of adding value in this way to the school. Chaplaincy is all about offering care, support, helping, assisting, listening and showing kindness. Let me know if you would like to chat about ways you could be a part of this service.

Blessings, Chappy

Ferny Grove State High School Year 7 2020

We are finalising the Year 7 2020 enrolments at present and want to remind parents who have not completed an expression of interest that you need to do this soon. If you are eligible for enrolment at Ferny Grove State High School according to Education Queensland Enrolment Management Maps you need to complete an Expression of Interest form (EOI) and drop it into the office or email to [email protected]. We will contact you to organise a time for collection of enrolment pack and interview time. We are beginning to create the classes for 2020 so would appreciate having enrolments completed soon so that we can get class structures accurate.

The Transition Day for Year 6 into 7 will be occurring on Thursday 5th December. It will be an all day event. Your child needs to attend in their primary school uniform and have a hat, pen, paper, water bottle and food. More details regarding this will be sent electronically to enrolled students as we get closer to the date.
