Shave for a Cure Update Fabulous Ferny has banked a total of $26 200.84 for the Leukaemia Foundation’s Shave for a Cure campaign. What a fantastic effort. Nationally Shave for a Cure has raised $15 319 530. School Disco Our next school disco will be on Thursday 23 May 2019. Prep—Year 3 from 5pm to 6.30pm and Year 4—Year 6 from 7pm—8.30pm at the school hall. More information to come.

Safety in and around schools is our highest priority. We have practices in place to limit the use of vehicles on the school grounds to ensure that our children are safe. Unfortunately lately there have been some instances of parents walking through the carparks to drop off and pick up their children from the classroom. Although as parents we believe we can do this safely, it can send the wrong message to a young child that this is a safe thing to do. We can never be sure of what they will do in our absence so modelling best practice is the best way for them to learn. Here are some tips to teach your children how to be safe walking to and from school. When they know how to be safe, quite often they then teach us!

Walking advice You are responsible for your child’s safety when travelling to and from school.

It’s a good idea to hold your child's hand when walking on the footpath and when crossing the road - until they are at least 8 years old.

When your children are between 8 and 10 years old, supervise them very closely when they are near traffic and crossing the road.

When you decide to let your child walk to and from school by themselves, plan the journey together. Practise being a safe pedestrian by:

keeping to the left of the footpath being aware of vehicles coming in and out of

driveways not being distracted by mobile

devices or by other people using a safe, alternative way

home in wet weather showing respect to other

pedestrians.

Encourage your child:

to always use a safe place to cross the road such as a pedestrian crossing, traffic lights or a school crossing, if available

to check for turning vehicles before they cross the road and driveways

never to assume that a driver can see you or will stop for you

to make eye contact with a driver so they know the driver has seen them

to wait till the driver has completely stopped their vehicle before they cross the road or driveway.

Remind your child when crossing the road to always:

STOP! one step back from the kerb

LOOK! continuously both ways

LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic

THINK! is it safe to cross.

Under 8’s Day Each year we enjoy celebrating being under 8 by planning a fun, messy and creative morning full of activities for our Prep – year 2 students. This year it will be held on Friday the 24th of May during the morning session. Parents, grandparents and younger siblings are all welcome to attend and join in on the messy fun. Please ensure you send your child along with a bag to pop their glittery creations in to bring home.

Consistent late arrivals and high absences Students who are absent for 10% or more of school days display chronic absenteeism. Together with our Guidance Officer we will shortly be identifying who these students are and parents will receive a formal letter regarding this. We will also be identifying those students who are arriving to school late frequently. Each parent of a student who is of compulsory school age must ensure that the student is enrolled and attends school on every school day unless the parent has a reasonable excuse. When a student is absent from school with a reasonable excuse, the parent is required to notify the school. It is also the responsibility of the parent to ensure that the student arrives to school on time. As a school we will continue to monitor this and if there are no improvements with the identified students then the formal process will continue. Please ensure your child is arriving to school on time. I am often surprised by the line-up of students in the foyer waiting to get a late slip. This is not setting your child up for a successful day and is also extremely disruptive to the class.

Middle Years news I really appreciate the support that I have received since stepping into the role of Acting Deputy Principal (4-6). It has been great getting to know the upper school and all the different activities that take place.

In Term 3, students from Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School in Japan will once again be visiting Ferny Grove SS. If you are interested in being a Host Family during their stay, please fill in the application form and return it to the school office or email Keiko ([email protected])

Good luck to all the students who are participating in the North West District Athletics Carnival, your effort, sportsmanship and dedication is something to be proud of.

ANZAC Day Commemorations ANZAC Day is a very important commemoration at Ferny Grove SS. Each year we are made proud by our students in their participation and contribution to making this day meaningful and memorable. Much work goes into the preparation of the Anzac Day service, and for this we are thankful of all the teachers who contribute their time and talents to make this commemoration special. In particular, thanks to Matt Kurth, Kurt Bryant, Rhonda Haringcaspel & Naomi Miller.

Doves for Peace Display This year, we once again focused on being grateful for the peace we enjoy in our lives and for the sacrifices made by Defence members past and present that contribute to our enjoyment of a safe and peaceful country. Students were asked to create origami doves to contribute to a whole school art installation. Approximately 600 origami doves were made and displayed in the hall with the help of some very special people. A big thank you goes out to Mr & Mrs Trevarthen, Sarah Bingham, Katrina Johansson, Chappy and Tony Clark for your help putting the display together – it would not have been possible without your support.

Special Guests We were very fortunate this year to have special guests attending our school as part of the Anzac Day commemorations. I would like to extend a huge thank you to the members from the 2nd /14th Lighthorse Regiment, Qld Mounted Infantry unit; CPL W. Naggs, LCPL M Chappel, TPR H Dietrich, TPR S Dickson, TPR D Laing, TPR Bendall and TPR D Stead, as well as Steve Reeves and his horse Max from the Qld Mounted Infantry Historical Troop for giving our students the opportunity to learn more about the military experience and to get a close look at the military equipment and vehicles past and present. Students loved learning about the drones, meeting Max the horse and getting an inside view of the military vehicles. CPL Naggs was a most entertaining presenter who related beautifully with our students and provided plenty of humour for the adults. A big thank you also to the members from 8/9 RAR; PTE B R Fry, PTE B J Neal, PTE Z J Karnaghan, PTE T D Williams, PTE D R Scofield and LCPL P Rana who provided ceremonial support by way of a catafalque party. Students are always mesmerised by the soldiers standing to attention. This year, the catafalque party went above and beyond expectation as they also took the time to talk with students after the service to share their experiences in the Army and allowed students access inside their vehicle. Thank you all so much for your time and for enriching our students’ learning.

Jeremy is our very own Australian Olympian

Many of you will have seen Jeremy helping out in our library. He recently had an amazing trip to the Special Olympic Games in Abu Dhabi.

Jeremy has been swimming since he was four years old and for the past two years has been part of a Masters squad, training weekly at Chermside Aquatic Centre as well as completing 2 hour open water training sessions at Suttons Beach each fortnight.

All Jeremy’s hard work paid off when he was selected to represent Australia in the Special Olympics Summer World Games in Abu Dhabi in March. Jeremy travelled to Abu Dhabi where he competed in 3 events finishing 7th in the 800m freestyle, he won a bronze medal for the open water swim and a gold medal as part of the Australian 800m freestyle relay team.

Jeremy is an inspirational young man, aside from his swimming accomplishments and working in our school library he also helps out at the Enoggera Army Base and is part of the Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra.

Congratulations Jeremy, we are very proud of your hard work and dedication.
