Congratulations to two Southampton Historical Society members for compiling and publishing an outstanding directory of the Township’s Cemeteries. The cemeteries are located on both public and private property.

The journey through more than 200 years of local history began over 20 years ago for Dolores Hammond Carrigan (1959) in her search to find and index the township’s cem-eteries. Several years ago Carrigan was joined in her efforts by Michele Elbin Miller (2000). This collaboration resulted in the printing of the book “Cemeteries of Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.”

The book is a very informative 272 pages, spiral-bound and printed on heavy stock paper. It features more than 25 Southampton cemeteries and a few more that border the township. It includes driving directions, colored pages and photos, a list of veterans and an index of people buried there. The directory sells for $30 plus postage and the proceeds go toward the restoration of the 141 year old two-room Point Pleasant School in Chaneysville. For more information contact Michele Miller at 814-839-4907.

EVERETT ALUMNI INDUCTED INTO THE 2014 BEDFORD COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Hugh Henry TateInformation taken from articles written by Lynn Saternow, Sports Editor of the Sharon Herald

The spacious new Everett Area High School Cafeteria was chosen as the venue for the 2014 Bedford County Sports Hall Of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony. The close proximity to the renovated auditorium made the move from banquet to the induction program a quick and easy transition. Everett’s inductees into the Hall of Fame this year include Hugh Henry Tate of major and minor league baseball fame, the Special Community Award went to Richard M. Crawford, and the Everett Sportsman’s Association, Inc. received the organization award.

In sifting through almost 20 years of alumni newsletter articles, I couldn’t find any that featured the colorful life and career of Hughey Tate.

“I can prove that I was born in the little village of Everett, Bedford County, Penna. down among the hills where men are men and the ducks are so tough they can bite the end off a double-barrell shotgun.” And so he was. Hugh Henry Tate was born in Everett on May 19, 1880 and died on August 7, 1956 leaving behind a legacy of terrific sports prowess. Hughey Tate was the greatest baseball player that ever lived - hitting 10,000 home runs and never making an out in 50 years on the diamond. At least that’s the way Hughey would have told it before bursting into laughter.

He was an extremely good player and prodigious home run hitter, but just as importantly, he was one of the real characters who cropped up in sports before the “days of the big money.” In fact, his calling card read: “I am a great

bull*****er myself, but I always enjoy listening to an expert - carry on.”

He honed his baseball skills at Everett High School. In one game against Saxton, he had three hits in four at- bats, including a home run that a local paper reported as the longest ever hit at the Everett field. Following high school he attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Hughey played in the minor leagues for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Senators; in the major leagues for the Senators in 1905; professionally in Cumberland, MD; and finally moved to Greenville, Pa, where he played in the independent leagues and became a legendary home run hitter. He finished out his career as a batmaker for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

One of the stories regarding his home run prowess came from the early 1900s in Youngstown, Oh. Many ballparks in the area had a sign in the outfield advertising Bull Durham Tobacco. Any player hitting a homer off the sign would win $50 from the company. Hughey did it so often, the company took down the signs.

He had a long career as a sign maker and was a constant companion of the “movers and shakers” in the Greenville area. Hughey also wrote a book of humorous tales entitled “The Wanderings of a Bush Leaguer or the Biggest Liar on Earth.”

When Hughey died in 1956, a Youngstown sports writer wrote of his passing and called him the “original tape measure walloper from Greenville, Pa.” Here, we like to think of Hughey Tate as the “original tape measure walloper from Everett, Pa.”
