INTRODUCTION Congratulations on the purchase of your new MSAEvolution 5000 Thermal Imaging System! Thishand-held unit provides advanced thermal imagingtechnology backed by years of MSA quality,dedication, and service.

The Evolution 5000 Thermal Imaging Camera(TIC) is designed to assist firefighters to see inlow visibility conditions of smoke and darkness.This high definition thermal imaging cameraprovides the latest in available thermal imagingtechnology for the fire service.

FEATURES AND BENEFITSThe Evolution 5000 Thermal Imaging Camera(TIC) can be used to aid firefighting in scenariossuch as:

• Search and rescue missions • Initial size-up/Scene assessment • Locating the seat of the fire • Locating fire extension• Identifying potential flashover situations • Determining entry and ventilation points • Hazmat situations• Response vehicle navigation

DESCRIPTIONThe Evolution 5000 TIC is a highly sophisticatedpiece of electronic equipment. The unit wasdesigned to withstand the firefighting conditionsof heat, driving spray, and frequent impactnormally seen by a firefighter. Extension beyondthese demands may damage the camera andrender it inoperable. It is not recommended that

the camera run for extended periods in high-heatconditions.

The Evolution 5000 TIC is intended as an aid tofire and rescue operations in conditions of poorvisibility created by smoke and darkness. It is nota replacement for standard firefighting techniquesand precautions. Users must ensure that the firedepartment’s standard operating procedures arefollowed while using the camera.

ABOUT THE CAMERA

The Evolution 5000 TIC is:

• equipped with a state-of-the-art 160 x 120microbolometer thermal detector to provide theclearest high-definition images available in fireand non-fire environments

• equipped with a large screen, high definitiondisplay to allow for multiple firefighters to viewthe action

• ergonomically designed for the firefightingenvironment

• available with desk top and truck mountedcharging options

• designed with the most ergonomically correctbalance, with the center of gravity located in theusers hand

• dust and water-resistant to withstand short-termimmersion in up to three feet of water inaccordance with IP67 specifications

• Available with multiple carrying and attachmentoptions to suit user preferences - the Evolution5000 TIC is a tool

• The Evolution 5000 TIC detects thermal energyradiated/generated from surrounding objectsand converts this energy into a visual image.

WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS

" WARNING

1. The user must be trained and thoroughlyfamiliar with the proper operation andlimitations of the thermal imaging systemprior to use. Use in controlled live-burnexercises is suggested before using theequipment in actual emergency situations.Improper use of the equipment in ahazardous atmosphere could result inserious personal injury or death.

2. Do not rely on the thermal imaging systemas the sole means of navigation or deviatefrom standard fire-fighting navigationalpractices during use. Although the systemprovides an image in dark and smokyenvironments, the user may becomedisoriented or lost in such environments ifthe system becomes inoperative.

Most electronic devices will cease to operate atcertain high temperature extremes. Tests onthe Evolution 5000 TIC indicate that it willprovide an acceptable image whensubjected to an ambient temperature ofapproximately 120°C (248°F) for about tenminutes. Exposure to conditions exceedingthese will result in deterioration and loss ofimage.

3. Thermal energy is not transmitted through glassor underwater and may be reflected off ofsmooth surfaces. Disorientation may occur ifthe user is unaware of these properties.

4. This thermal imaging system is not rated as"Intrinsically Safe." Do not use the system inenvironments or atmospheres where staticor sparks may cause an explosion.

5. Before entering a hostile environment, test thethermal imaging system as specified in theinstructions to ensure that it is functional.After each use, inspect the system todetermine if servicing is required.

6. Exposure to high temperature environmentsfor an extended period of time may causedegradation or loss of thermal image. Avoidheat saturation or over exposure of theequipment. If degradation of the thermalimage is observed, immediately remove theequipment from the high heat environmentand allow it to cool until the thermal imagereturns to normal; otherwise, the system maybecome inoperative.

7. Replacement batteries must exactly match theratings and configuration of those supplied

with the equipment. Use of unapprovedbatteries may render the system inoperative.

8. Do not remove the thermal imaging cameracover or casing as the system operates onhigh voltage. Only authorized personnel mayservice the unit.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE WARNINGSCAN RESULT IN SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURYOR DEATH.

" CAUTION

1. Ensure battery is fully charged before use. Ifnot fully charged, the system will not operatefor the specified amount of time. Monitorbattery level during use and immediately exitthe hazardous area when a low batterywarning is observed.

2. Electromagnetic radiation (radiotransmissions) may cause interference.Minimize nearby radio transmissions ifexcessive interference occurs.

3. To avoid lens fogging, the user may coatthe lenses and view finder with MSA anti-fogmaterial (MSA P/N 13016).

4. Do not point the thermal imaging cameradirectly at the sun; otherwise, damage to thedetector may occur.

5. Do not drop the thermal imaging camera.Although the camera is designed towithstand normal impacts that occur in fireservice, such impacts may alter the focus ordamage the unit.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE CAUTIONSCAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY OREQUIPMENT DAMAGE.

LIMITATIONS

1. Although the Evolution 5000 TIC is IP67waterproof, the system does not provideunderwater thermal images.

2. The Evolution 5000 TIC does not provideimages through glass, water, or shinyobjects; these surfaces act like mirrors to thesystem.

3. The Evolution 5000 TIC does not improveimpaired vision. Users with impaired visionshould continue to use ophthalmic deviceswhile using the system.

Getting StartedThe rechargeable batteries supplied with theEvolution 5000 TIC must be fully charged beforeuse. Also, periodically check and replace thebattery in an actively-used imager.

• See "Battery Care and Installation" later in thismanual.

TURNING THE CAMERA ON AND OFF

Normal Mode

1. To turn the cameraON, press thePOWER (green)button on the TIChandle (seeFIGURE 3) and holdfor approximatelyone second.

2. Wait approximatelyfive seconds for theinfrared sensorelectronics toself-test.

• The greenPOWER LED(located near thedisplay) lights.

• After severalseconds, thethermal imageappears on thescreen.

3. Verify the camera is functioning by aiming atan object or person until the thermal imageappears in the camera viewer.

• The thermal imaging camera is now readyfor use.

NOTE: The Evolution 5000 POWER buttonhas a momentary pushbutton switchthat requires deliberate, one-secondactivation to activate. Rapidrepeated depression of the POWERbutton may cause the TIC start-upsoftware to lock, and a picture willnot display (LEDs may still activate).If this condition occurs, simply turnthe TIC OFF and back ON usingslow, deliberate button presses.

Standby Mode

To conserve battery consumption, the camera isequipped with a Standby Mode feature.

4. To activate, press the POWER button until:

• The display shuts OFF.

• The system STATUS LED begins toflash green.

5. To return to Normal Mode from Standby Mode,press the POWER (green) button until:

• The display immediately reactivateswithout warm-up time.

• The system STATUS LED turns tosolid green.

Turning the Camera OFF

6. To turn the camera OFF, press and hold thegreen POWER button in for four seconds.

• As a safety feature to avoid inadvertentpower-OFFs, the green POWER buttonmust be held for four seconds to turn OFFthe camera.

• The green STATUS LED flashes duringthe power-off countdown to confirmeffective button press.

• When all LED indicators shut OFF,the user may release the greenPOWER button.

• The camera is now OFF.

USER INTERFACE- INDICATORS ANDWARNINGS

The Evolution 5000 TIC comes standard with fiveLED Indicators for System Status, Battery Life andOvertemp status. When the TIC is turned OFF, allLEDs are darkened. Also, the TIC has on-screenindicators for low sensitivity, shutter and optionalquick-temp (FIGURE 4).

LED IndicatorsD Over - Temperature Warning

E System Status IndicatorF Battery Status Indicators.

On-Screen IndicatorsA - Low Sensitivity Mode Indicator - Anon-screen sensitivity indicator ("L") informs theuser when the camera is in the low sensitivity(Firefighting) mode.

• This mode occurs when the thermal imagersenses an environment above 150°C.

• Dynamic Range is extended while in this mode toprovide greater image details of the surroundings.

In high-heat conditions, the TIC will automaticallyenter the Low Sensitivity (or Firefighting) mode.While in Low Sensitivity mode, the TIC’s dynamicrange is extended, thereby allowing the user tomake better distinction of objects and people withina higher temperature range. When the Evolution5000 TIC is in Low Sensitivity mode, the letter "L"appears in the lower left corner of the display.

B - Shutter Indicator - An on-screen indicatorthat tells the user when the TIC is shutteringappears as a green square in the upper leftcorner of the display.

While the TIC is in operation, it is periodicallynecessary for the TIC to refresh the focal plane inorder to operate properly. This occurs via aninternal shutter mechanism. When the TICshutters, the image on the display temporarilyfreezes for about one second. Shuttering canoccur more frequently in higher heat conditions.This is normal for all microbolometer - based TICs.

C - Optional Quick-Temp Indicator - On-screenoperating Quick Temp spotter and vertical bargauge spans temperatures from 32°F (0°C) to300°F (150°C) in High Sensitivity mode and 32°F(0°C) to 1000°F (500°C) in Low Sensitivity modefor objects located in the spotter. The digitaltemperature feature displays the approximatenumeric value of the temperature of objectslocated in the spotter.

LED IndicatorsD - Over Temperature Warning - Warningactivates when the system electronics approachmaximum recommended operating temperature limits.

• Not lit indicates system is withinoperational thermal limits

• Flashing Red indicates the TIC hasexceeded recommended operationalthermal limits.

" WARNING

Most electronic devices will cease to operateat certain high temperature extremes. Testson the Evolution 5000 TIC indicate that it willprovide an acceptable image when subjectedto an ambient temperature of approximately

120°C (248°F) for about ten minutes.Exposure to conditions exceeding these willresult in deterioration and loss of image.

E - System Status Indicator - A single LEDshows the operational status of the TIC.

• Green indicates the TIC is ON and fully operational• Flashing Green indicates the TIC is ON and in

power-saving Standby mode.F - Battery Status Indicator - Battery capacity isshown by a row of three LEDs: one green, oneyellow, and one red. Only one of the three batterystatus indicators will be illuminated at any one time.

• Green indicates full or nearly full battery capacity• Yellow indicates marginal battery capacity • Red indicates battery warning and nominally 15

minutes of battery life remaining • Flashing Red indicates battery shutdown is

imminent (about one minute of warning time).

Additional IndicatorsOptional Heat Seeker Indicator - The optionalHeat Seeker indicator shows any portion of thescreen in red:

• When in high sensitivity mode (lowtemperatures) any portion of the scene which isabove 288°F (142°C)

• When in low sensitivity mode (firefighting mode)any portion of the scene which is above 887°F(475°C)

The Heat Seeker mode also indicates any portionof the scene in yellow:

• When in high sensitivity mode (lowtemperatures) any portion of the scene which isabove 275°F (135°C)

• When in low sensitivity mode (firefighting mode) anyportion of the scene which is above 842°F (450°C).

System Fault Indicator - All five LEDs will flash ifa system fault is detected. The TIC’s internalcomputer runs a self-diagnostic program. If aproblem with the internal component is detected, afault will be signaled and the LEDs will flash.

BATTERY CARE AND INSTALLATION

RECHARGEABLE BATTERIESThe Evolution 5000 TIC runs on two Lithium Ionbatteries; one battery is required for TIC operation.

BATTERY INSTALLATION AND CARE1. Place the unit on a clean, non-abrasive surface

and lean the unit forward.

2. Unhook the battery latch and open thebattery compartment.

3. Place the battery inside the batterycompartment with the battery logo and arrowfacing right and pointing toward the top ofthe TIC.

4. Close and latch the battery compartment.

BATTERY MAINTENANCEAfter each use, inspect:

• battery contacts for damage• batteries for damage or leakage• to ensure battery charger is functioning properly

by:• placing battery into the charger

• checking that the battery charger LEDsreact accordingly.

Note: Batteries not passing this inspectionmust be removed from service untilthe proper repairs are made.

STAND-ALONE BATTERY CHARGER

" WARNING

This charging system is not rated as"intrinsically safe." Do not use the system inenvironments or atmospheres where static orspark may cause an explosion.

Do not remove the outer housing of theCharger. Only authorized personnel mayservice the unit.

OPERATIONChoose the proper adapter cord power source tobe used.

1. For standard AC operation: Plug the DC plug of the AC/DC Adapter intothe charger and plug the AC Adapter intoany standard 110-VAC outlet.

2. For DC Power Adapter operation: Plug the DC Power Adapter Cord into thecharger and plug the other end into any DC12-V power source that offers acigarette-lighter type socket.

CHARGING THE BATTERY1. Connect the unit with either AC/DC Power

Adapter or DC Car Power Adapter.2. Place the battery into the unit.

• StandBy Mode:• Without any battery installed, the

charger will flash the LED markedMED, indicating that the charger isstanding by and waiting for a battery tobe connected.

• Phase 1 - Initial Charge:• All three LEDs flash in sequence from

MED (left) to MAX (right)• If the battery is low, this will be the first

charge phase• With high capacity batteries, this phase

can sometimes be the longest of thethree phases

• With some low capacity batteries andbatteries reaching the end of their life,this phase can be very short.

Note: When a battery is first connected, theLEDs may instantly indicate MED,HI and MAX charge, depending onthe charge status of the battery. Theprocess will continue normally fromthat point forward.

Note: It is normal for the charger, ACadapter, or the battery to becomewarm during charging.

• Phase 2 - MED Charge:

• MED LED is ON continuously andother LEDs are flashing in sequence

• At this point, the battery is typicallyabout 50% charged.

• Phase 3 - HI Charge:

• The MED and HI LEDs are ON and theMAX LED is flashing

• At this point, the battery is typicallyabout 70% charged.

• Phase 4 - MAX Charge:

• All three LEDs are ON at the same time

• Charging is complete and the battery isfully charged

• It is recommended to remove thebattery at this time.

3. Remove the battery from the unit.

• The battery is now ready for use.

Note: Error Condition - Charge Terminated -If the If the battery is removedbefore a complete charge isreached, the charger continuesindicating the last complete chargingphase for up to one minute. Afterthat time, an "Error" indicationappears on the LEDs (shown by theMED and MAX LEDs coming ONtogether while the HI LED is OFF).

The Error Condition is also indicated if thecharger senses any problem withthe battery being charged. To resetthe Error Condition, unplug thecharger from the power adapter for afew seconds; then, reconnect thecharger to the power adapter. If theError occurs again, there may be adefect in the battery that preventssafe charging.

Evolution 5000 Truck-Mounted Charging System Operation

To charge the TIC and spare batteries using theEvolution 5000 Truck-Mounted Charging Systemmake sure the TIC charging pins and cradle areclean and free from debris.

1. Place the TIC into the charging cradle with thedisplay facing outward; secure the unit withthe straps on the charging cradle.

2. If charging a spare battery, place the batteryinto the slot provided and secure it with therubber retainer.

The power LED indicator should always remaingreen when the power source is ON and properlyconnected. When the Truck-Mounted ChargingSystem is correctly installed, the status indicatorswill light as follows:

Note: For optimal performance, the batterycharger should be operated attemperatures between 50 to 85° F(10 to 29° C). Charging batteriesoutside this temperature range mayresult in a charging error and/orpremature battery degradation.Charging batteries in environmentsgreater than 100° F (38° C) mayresult in premature termination ofcharge.

The charging cycle takes approximately 2-1/2hours to completely charge a single battery or fivehours when charging two completely dischargedbatteries.

OperationGetting StartedThe Evolution 5000 TIC Truck-Mounted ChargingSystem must be correctly installed before use.Read all installation instructions thoroughly beforestarting actual installation.

" WARNING

Carefully follow all instructions provided withthis charger. This charger will perform asdesigned only if installed, used, andmaintained properly; otherwise, it may failto operate properly and result in seriouspersonal injury or death.

Use eyewear or face protection to avoid eyeinjury during installation; failure to do so mayresult in serious personal injury.

What you will need:• Electric drill• #7 (.201) drill bit, 9/32 (0.281) drill bit• 1/4-20 tap• #2 Phillips head screwdriver• Stainless steel 1/4- 20 bolts (4)• 5-amp in-line fuse• Master ON/OFF switch• Strain relief bushing for power supply cable• Installation hardware kit (provided).

Installation GuidelinesSelect a large flat surface area for mounting thatallows easy access for Evolution 5000 TIC storageand adequate cable length for electricalconnections. Take care to install the charger in anarea protected from direct water spray andextreme temperature conditions.

Mounting Hanging Channels1. Drill two holes in both Unistrut channels (A in

FIGURE 8), using a 9/32 (.281) drill.

• Drill mounting holes, 1-1/2 inches in fromoutside edges of channels.

2. Place top channel on the cab wall,approximately four inches away fromoverhead obstructions.

3. Using a Unistrut channel as a template, drilltwo holes into cab wall with a #7 (.201) drill.

4. Tap both holes for 1/4-20 mounting bolts.

5. Position bottom channel on cab wall, 6-1/2inches away from center of top channel.

6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to mount bottomchannel.

7. Bolt both channels in-place with stainless steel1/4-20 bolts.

Mounting the Truck-Mounted Charger toChannels

1. Slide Unistrut spring nut (B in FIGURE 8) intochannel and rotate 90° to seat nut in channelV-groove. One nut is required for the topchannel and two for the bottom channel.

2. Place the stainless steel bolts (C inFIGURE 8) through the mounting holesmolded into the charger.

3. Place the neoprene rubber washer (D inFIGURE 8) over the bolt, align bolt withspring nut and tighten.

Note: If mounting the charger vertically, usethe two longer stainless steel boltson the bottom and add a secondneoprene washer to each of thebottom two bolts.

Electrical Connections

Power RequirementsThe Truck-Mounted Charging System canconsume enough current to eventually fully drainthe vehicle’s battery, if the vehicle stands forlonger than a 12-hour period without supplementalbattery charging.

Therefore, it is recommended that the charger beinstalled using any master ON/OFF switch wherepower comes directly from the battery,supplemental charger or connected to AC powervia a shoreline when the vehicle is stored.

1. Warranty - Seller warrants that this productand its accessories will be free frommechanical defect or faulty workmanship fora period of one (1) year from date ofpurchase, not to exceed eighteen (18)months from date of manufacture, whichever occurs first, provided it is maintainedand used in accordance with Seller’sinstructions and/or recommendations. TheSeller shall be released from all obligationsunder this warranty in the event repairs ormodifications are made by persons otherthan its own or authorized service personnelor if the warranty claim results from physicalabuse or misuse of the product. No agent,employee or representative of the Seller hasany authority to bind the Seller to anyaffirmation, representation or warrantyconcerning the goods sold under thiscontract. THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OFALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED,IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, AND ISSTRICTLY LIMITED TO THE TERMSHEREOF. General Maintenance

After each use, inspect:

• the Evolution 5000 TIC for structural, heatand/or chemical damage

• the mechanical hardware to ensure no screwsare loose and no O-rings or gaskets are looseor misplaced

• all lenses for heat damage, chemical damage,cracks and breaks

• to ensure that all warning labels are intact

• battery - see "Battery Care and Installation"

Note: Thermal Imaging Cameras not meetingthe above inspection must beremoved from service until theproper repairs are made.

Cleaning

After each use, clean all external surfaces (case,base, visor, lens, window and straps) by wipingwith a solution of mild detergent and warm water.Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth, to avoid scratchingthe optical surfaces.

Periodically check connector terminals, videosocket, ON/OFF switch, locking latch and hinge forcontamination. Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth.

It is possible that charge can be terminatedabnormally. While this condition is rare, itcan occur because of external in-band noisethat may reach the charger electronics. Inthe unlikely event that charge is falselyterminated because of noise, the battery maynot fully charge. Always use the camerabattery gauge as an indicator of batterycondition.

" CAUTION

Do not use solvents or paint thinners to cleanthe Thermal Imager; otherwise, the protectivecase may become degraded.

SERVICE

If your Evolution 5000 Thermal Imaging Camera(TIC) is in need of service or repair, pleasecontact the MSA Service Center at1-877-MSA-FIRE.

Describe the problem to the Representative ascompletely as possible.

1. Verify with your Representative that theproduct should be returned to MSA.

2. Before returning the product, decontaminateand clean your Thermal Imaging Camera toremove any hazardous materials that mayhave settled on the product during use.

Field Repairs and MaintenanceNote: Only remove the Truck-Mounted

Charging System’s back cover in anESD-protected area with personalgrounding system (e.g., groundedwrist strap).

Internal PCB Fuse Replacement• Power LED will not light and other

troubleshooting guidelines do not resolve theproblem.

1. Remove charger from mounting brackets.Using a screwdriver, remove the threeretaining clips from the plastic bosses andremove the back cover.

2. Disconnect the power hookup cable bydisconnecting the Phoenix connector fromthe plug-in receptacle on the upper right sideof the printed circuit board panel.

3. The internal printed circuit board fuse islocated next to the Phoenix connector on thecircuit board. Remove the fuse using theplastic, nonconductive tweezers and replaceit with a new fuse (P/N 10041101, packageof five)

4. Reconnect the power hook-up cable to thePhoenix connector and replace the backcover. Secure the cover with the retainingclips and bolt it back to the mountingbrackets.
