Klee Wyck JournalThe Making of a Wilderness Retreat
Lou A. McKee
After many years of paddling the waterways and outer coasts of the Pacific northwest, author and artist Lou McKee planned a short kayaking trip near Vancouver Island with friends and family that unexpectedly became a yearly tradition. During the first trip that Pacific Northwestern summer, they chanced upon an enchanting stretch of beach and spent several days collecting stones polished by the ocean, exploring the nearby creek, and breathing in the wonder of untamed water and wilderness.
This remote coastal beach drew them back year after year, though the coastal rains became almost too much to endure. Thus, the Klee Wyck Cabin, as it came to be named, was borne from found cedar beach logs and other reclaimed wood to shield the travelers from summer storms. For a few weeks each year, friends and family came together to share stories, heartaches, celebrations, and the building of the tiny wilderness retreat cabin.
Lou McKee took her journal and sketchbook with her to Klee Wyck each year, documenting the process of building the cabin, and rendering local flora and fauna in exquisite colored ink and pencil drawings. Collected together in print for the first time, Klee Wyck Journal brings together her observations, remarkable story of a lifetime on and near the water, and sketches in full color. Join her and extended family as she shares the story of her Klee Wyck Journal.
Lou A. McKee was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her childhood summers were spent on Texada Island, where she learned at an early age to swim and row a boat. She has worked
as a watercolor painter, illustrator, greeting card artist, fabric and dinnerware designer, and most recently as an oil pastel painter.

We Fought the RoadChristine & Dennis McClure
We Fought the Road is the story of the building of the Alaska-Canada Highway during World War II. More than one third of the 10,607 builders were black, thought to be incapable of performing on a war front by many of their white commanding officers. Their task—which required punching through wilderness on a route blocked by the Rocky Mountains and deadly permafrost during the one of the worst winters on record—has been likened to the building of the Panama Canal. Unlike most accounts that focus on the road’s military planners, We Fought the Road is boots-on-the-ground and often personal, based in part on letters from the “Three Cent Romance”—the successful courtship via mail discovered in the authors’ family papers.
Christine and Dennis McClure married in 1992. Christine was born in Annapolis, MD, and later served in the United States Army as
a registered nurse at the end of the Vietnam Era. Dennis was born and raised in Northern Michigan and pursued a PhD on the pre-Civil War history of the Mountain South after serving with the United States
Army. Upon discovering her father’s letters to her mother during World War II, Christine set out with Dennis on a journey to document
the untold stories of the Alaska Highway.

Down the Wild River NorthConstance Helmericks
In suburban Arizona, 1965, Connie Helericks announced to her two daughters, 12-year-old Ann and 14-year-old Jean, “We’re going to make a canoe expedition to the Arctic Ocean.” And for two successive summers, that’s exactly what they did. This book is the vividly written story of their adventures in the remote northern reaches of Canada and the Arctic, in a twenty-foot canoe, amidst a wondrous and vast landscape. A wilderness adventure, and a story of family bonds and spiritual renewal.
Connie Helmericks, arctic adventurer and author, was a wild spirit who yearned for adventure in an era of obedient women. In 1941, when she was twenty-three, she persuaded her husband to
leave Arizona for the Alaskan wilds. Her successful books and their documentaries came later. She passed away in 1987.

Mystery of the Fire Trees of Southeastern Alaska
Mary Ida HenriksonDid the early Tlingits and
Haidas of Southeastern Alaska develop innovations for preserving fire well ahead of their time? While no written record can be found, artist Mary Henrikson paid close attention to oral histories and investigated carefully altered, centuries-old cedar trees with deeply burned interiors. Inspired, the artist crafted a series of paintings on fire trees, in addition to employing investigative techniques favored by scientists. Her work combines both approaches in hopes of inspiring speculation.

Little Annie Oakley and Other Rugged People
Stewart Holbrook
In the vein of his Lost Men of American History, Holbrook takes readers down uncharted paths in a series of delightful pieces, pure Americana, that delve into the myths of people and places of the late 1800s. Interspersed among character bits are rich historical views of places, the author’s own experiences in logging camps, and enthusiastic sketches of the near-extinct Yankee.
Stewart Hall Holbrook (1893 - 1964) was an American lumberjack, writer, and popular historian. His writings focused on
what he called the “Far Corner” - Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. A self-proclaimed “low-brow” historian, his topics included Ethan Allen, the railroads, the timber industry, the Wobblies, and eccentrics of the
Pacific Northwest.
