Welcome to the Summer edition of the Family
Grapevine!Well, April was an exciting month for me this year as it saw the culmination of my fundraising efforts on behalf of CLIC Sargent. Joining a group of 99 other cancer charity fundraisers from around the country, I went on the challenge of a lifetime to Jordan in the Middle East and walked across the mountains from the Dead Sea to Petra. It was an amazing experience and one I’ll never forget. I want to thank absolutely EVERYONE who organised it, raised money for it, trained with me, suffered with me and above all, gave me money and helped me raise £2320 for CLIC Sargent. THANKYOU!

Back to normal life now though. It must be a testament to the resilience of us Shropshire people in the face of the unpredictability of our British weather, but we seem to have responded really positively this summer - there are literally over 100 child-friendly events happening across the area and more being added to the events listing on the website all the time. From baby Rhymetime/Storytime at the libraries through fun productions at Theatre Severn and the Place all the way to massive family festivals like Telford’s T-Party coming up at the end of August, there is a wealth of things to fill the long summer holidays with, whatever the age of your children.
And when the school term starts again in September there are are even more things to do to keep your “littlies” happy and healthy - check out all the Toddler activities on pages 12-16 - (ssssh! - don’t tell anyone, but they’re fun for adults too!)

The Face of Little KickersEarlier this year we set a competition to find the new “Face of Little Kickers”.
After over 200 entries from over 270 venues, we are proud to announce that Grace Piangnee from our Shrewsbury Mighties class was one of the winners. Grace will appear on all the UK Little Kickers adverts and promotional material (see above).
Grace has been attending Little Kickers for the past 10 months. She loves the Mr Man game and receiving her hand stamp every time she scores a goal.
She is so excited about seeing herself in print.As part of her prize, Grace and her family were treated to a day in London. Grace took part in shooting the adverts along with the other winners. She also received lots of LK goodies including a framed advert for her to treasure. Little Kickers

Millie Meerkats Play BarnWell despite the weather we managed to open on the 12th January as planned at
Millie Meerkat Play Barn and wow what a response, the place was packed and has remained busy ever since!
Our large bouncy area is a favourite with children and mums and dads alike and our animal encounter room has become very popular especially with the opportunity to
be able to touch and learn about the animals. We could have done with a larger animal room but that’s all the area we have for now.
Our two birthday party rooms are now booked on most weekends and even some private hire of the venue after our normal closing times.
We have listened to and read suggestions left by some of our visitors and changed a few things like offering free tea / coffee for adults, a loyalty card for regular visitors and meal deals for children after school. We have also added several new choices to
our food menu and not forgetting some yummy stuff on the specials board.During the summer we are planning activities in the field adjacent to the Play Barn where visitors will be able to watch and get involved with activities like Falconry,
Ferret racing, Jousting and pony rides.We have been on a steep learning curve at Millie Meerkats Play Barn but all in all we are pleased with what we have achieved so far and look forward to the future.

WHAT’S ON for your KIDS
PANDAS (Pre and Postnatal Depression Advice and Support) are organising their annual Pramathon and Fun Day in The Quarry, Shrewsbury on the 18th August 2013 from 10 – 4. The Pramathon is for all ages including adults, we want to get the families off Shropshire together pushing their prams in support of individuals and their families suffering pre and postnatal illnesses. Don’t worry, if you don’t have a pram, you can still join in all the fun, just ask friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you or pay £5 per adult to enter the Pramathon on the day. Simply register for free via our website www.pandasfoundation.org.uk follow the link for PANDAS Pramathon and register for the Shrewsbury event. Rachael Dobson will then be in contact and send you your sponsor form. The 1 mile Pramathon route around the Quarry will set off at 14:30.Your little ones can also join in the taster sessions at the day from Diddi Dance and Sing and Sign. As well as plenty of stalls, games, food and drink. Come along and support PANDAS, established and based in Shrewsbury. The PANDAS team will be available on the day to answer any of your questions. THE BABY RACE RETURNS TO QUARRY PARK, SHREWSBURY
April 2013 - Now in its fourth year The Baby Race, organised in partnership with leading national baby charity Tommy’s and pre and post-natal fitness experts Buggyfit, will be taking place at Quarry Park, Shrewsbury, on Sunday 1st September.This fun 8K race is a chance for the whole family to get out and enjoy their local park in all its summer glory, and to also help fund pioneering medical research into pregnancy complications. Participants can either choose to run this distance, or walk with their baby and buggy. All routes follow a designated path and are easy to navigate with a buggy.So whether it’s those looking to improve their fitness post-pregnancy, or a group of friends or family members who want to get together for a catch-up and stroll in the sunshine, the flexibility of The Baby Race allows everyone to enjoy it! Sign up at http://www.tommys.org/babyrace.Registration costs £14.50 per person and includes a T-shirt, training plan, gift and goody bag brimming with treats from sponsors Cow & Gate and Forever Friends, which participants will receive after crossing the finish line. There’s children’s entertainment from Pyjama Drama and before each run commences, a qualified Buggyfit instructor will lead an aerobic group warm-up. Tommy’s is a medical research charity, focusing on the causes and prevention of stillbirth, miscarriage, and premature birth. It also offers free advice and support to all parents-to-be on pregnancy health in the form of guidebooks and its Pregnancyline, a phone line staffed by midwives. Tommy’s hopes that each runner will raise at least £50 in sponsorship and those that raise more could snap up a top fundraiser prize, which include:• A term of swimming lessons from Water Babies - the UK’s leading swim school. • A Trunki, the much loved ride-on suitcase.• A scooter and balance bike from Great Little Trading Company.• Five Gold memberships to the Start Nursery worth £237 each - giving you access to hundreds of activities and resources specially designed for babies and under 5s. Hawkstone Park Follies Celebrates its 20th Anniversary
Hawkstone Park Follies, near Shrewsbury, is open throughout the summer promising a breathtaking day out for the family. The historic park is celebrating its 20th anniversary since it was restored and re-opened in 1993. Visitors are encouraged to climb the 100ft monument which gives panoramic views across 13 counties, explore the Grotto with its maze of caves and tunnels or simply take in the breath taking views from the terrace. Can you spare two afternoons each week to help a child to read, grow and succeed? Beanstalk is
a national charity which trains and supports reading helpers in primary schools throughout Shropshire. Each Beanstalk reading helper supports 3 children and sees each child for two 30 minute sessions twice a week, during term time, for a year. Together they read, play and talk. With Beanstalk’s support the child’s approach to reading and learning is often transformed. You don’t need any specific experience as we provide training but you do need to be reliable, enthusiastic, relate well to children and love reading. We are particularly looking for volunteers in Shrewsbury and Telford but applications are welcome from all areas. an environment that never forgets the importance of having fun! Class sizes are restricted to 17 providing top quality coaching in singing, dancing
and acting. We place great emphasis on helping the individual child to develop confidence and poise and to work as part of a team. We also give our students the
opportunity to undertake LAMDA examinations and our results are extremely impressive. This year we had students taking exams at various grades,
all passed - 59% with Merit and 41% with Distinction. The hard work of all the students paid off.
I think it gives us as much pleasure watching our students grow in self-assurance as it does watching them improve their theatre skills. The lessons are clearly very popular and our students seem to have a fantastic, if energetic, time. One student
said to me recently, “I wish Stagecoach lasted all day. I love it so much!”This summer students from Shrewsbury and Oswestry are performing at
Disneyland Paris. Our students are very excited and busy rehearsing for this fantastic event.

Firstly we have our Little Soldiers programme for 4-7 year olds. This is a specialised syllabus designed to introduce young children to martial arts, working specifically on the skills which improve both their physical and mental attributes. Our classes
also help with confidence building by challenging the children and getting them out of their comfort zone, one tiny step at a time. We work on skills such as balance,
coordination, focus, discipline, memory, and control. Our classes are very animated, making them lots of fun.
Secondly, we run a “Cadets” children’s karate programme for 8-11 year olds. All of our children’s classes teach important values such as discipline, self-control and
respect. We spend a great deal of time encouraging and improving attributes such as team work, leadership skills and public speaking.
