to visit Durban, South Africa. Leamington Spa Courier, Friday 14th September 1906 "Death of Mr. J.F. Brabner, Ex-Chief Constable of Leamington." Mr. Joseph Fryday Brabner, who for 19 years was Chief Constable of Leamington, died in London on Thursday evening

week, and the announcement of his passing was received with much keen regret in the Borough, where he was most popular with all classes. Mr. Brabner, who was 61 years of age, was born in London, and at the age of 22 years joined the Metropolitan Police Force. He was a most energetic officer, and he remained with the City of London Police for nine years, during which period he went through many interesting and exiting experiences. In the year 1876 he applied for and obtained the position of Superintendant of Police in the small Borough of Abingdon, Berkshire, which is now policed by the County Constabulary. He remained at Abingdon for five years, but the position offered few opportunities to one who desired to rise in the calling of his choice, and Mr. Brabner looked out for an opening elsewhere. In 1881 Mr. Lund resigned the Chief Constableship of Leamington and Mr. Brabner was the candidate selected out of many applicants for the post. He held it for nearly nineteen years, his appointment being dated the 10th of May 1881, and his resignation March 27th, 1900. Mr. Brabner's retirement was due to ill health, and was accepted with regret by the Watch Committee. He was of a most genial disposition, and made friends everywhere, being especially welcome at social gatherings, where his ability as a vocalist caused him to be in great request. He was an efficient head of the force, and was much liked by his subordinates, and respected by the Chairman and members of the Watch Committee. On his retirement a suggestion that he should be presented with a testimonial was at once taken up, and the appeal which was issued for subscriptions was liberally responded to. Mr. Brabner obtained an appointment in Natal after leaving Leamington, but he did not make a long stay in South Africa. After his return to England he resided principally in London. He took up residence at Hove for a short period, and spent some time in Cornwall. He several times revisited Leamington, where he was always warmly welcomed by his old friends and acquaintances in the Borough. Mrs. Brabner survives him."
