Welcome to our fi rst edition of HEY! magazine for the families in Wells and Shepton Mallet. It’s a cracking read with some fantastic competitions including a children’s croquet set for playing in the garden, a subscription to Animals and You magazine, free tickets to Bristol Zoo plus many, many more.

Hey! magazine is produced 6 times a year and will be given to all primary school children to take home in their book bags 2 weeks before each school holiday. In each copy you will fi nd many things to make and create, recipes for mum and children to make together and amazing facts.

economic regeneration team, who has been working closely with the programme producers, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for Shepton Mallet. We hope the exposure will benefi t the town.“We’re going to see empty shops transformed and fi lled with goods and services from different eras. What started off as a simple phone call to the council from the production company, has now become Shepton’s chance to become a major part of an exciting living history experiment.” Filming for the BBC ONE series, which is expected to be shown in the Autumn, is planned to begin in the summer and there will be opportunities for local people to get involved. Produced by television company Wall to Wall a Shed Media Group Company, which makes the hugely popular Who Do You Think You Are? series and the drama series New Tricks, the programmes will delve into the history of shopping - looking at how our habits have changed through the decades since the late 1800s. Cllr Ron Forrest, the district council’s portfolio holder for economy, said: “We hope this series will open up new opportunities for the town. “We’re all really excited about it, and hope that local people will join us in building up a buzz around this new series and what it might bring to Shepton’s regeneration.”Cllr John Parham, a district councillor and

local resident, said he hoped local people would “welcome it and grasp it with both hands”.He said: “A lot of work has gone in to making this happen, and I hope that it will encourage us all to look at our town centre in a new and exciting way.”The show is being described by the controller of BBC ONE, Jay Hunt, as a “fantastic opportunity to witness 100 years of British history through the shop window.”Will Dunscombe, who is a Shepton town councillor and local trader in the town, said: “This is a great chance for Shepton Mallet. Shepton has suffered in the past through a lack of footfall and negative publicity, so this is a golden opportunity for the town. “This might bring a brilliant opportunity for Shepton to brand itself; the town has lost its identity in some ways and this project could fi t really well with some of the discussions that have started in the town about making improvements. “I’m pleased that the district council and programme producers are inviting the public along to a meeting next week to fi nd out more about the programme and discuss any issues we might have.”

St Aldhelm’s Church School awarded

St Aldhelm’s Church School were delighted to be awarded Healthy Schools Status. The school has a culture and environment that promotes health and emotional well being at its heart. Beverly Reed, healthy schools co-ordinator said “I am absolutely thrilled we have achieved this award, it represents much commitment and hard work from colleagues, children and parents. This is truly a celebration of the whole school community and the important role each plays within it.”The children take part in sports coaching during the day as well as after schools clubs help to keep the children active, try new activities and work as part of a team. Parents are also working closely with the school and checking the healthy lifestyle continues at home. The school council also has plans to introduce raised beds to enable the children to grow their own vegetables, they hope to have chickens for their own eggs and a greenhouse where they can grow and sell their own plants.The picture shows the school council Jordan, Emily, Chloe, James, Laverina, James, Ben, jada, Izzie, Fynn, Maghan, James and with Mrs Reed with their plaque!

On 2nd March children from the Cross Country Running Club, held after school on Thursdays, competed in the Mendip run at Oakhill. Our team did exceptionally well. Eve was 1st in the Girl’s Y3/4 race, Oliver was 1st in the boys Y3/4 race, with Sam close behind in 4th place. Polly was 2nd in the girl’s Y5/6 race, the fi rst 2 girls being well ahead of the rest of the fi eld. Our other runners, Charlie, Hugo and Iona all managed good races, all gaining higher placements than in their previous race.

Gymnastics is new on the agenda at the Wells Blue Sports Centre. The Sports Centre recently introduced two popular Gymnastic courses on a Tuesday afternoon. The courses are taken by experienced local gymnast, Rebecca Botley, who attained her full Level 2 qualifi cation in December 2009; Rebecca said: ‘It’s fantastic to offer gymnastics on our timetable. The qualifi cation was diffi cult and time-consuming to get, but if everyone enjoys gymnastics as much as I have it will be well worth it’. Gymnastics is proven to be an excellent all round sport. It provides a variety of benefi ts ranging from fi tness and improved body shape to the attainment of excellent poise that will last a life time. Best of all it’s fun! The fi rst session starts at 16.00-16.55 and caters for 5-7 year olds. The second class starts17.00-17.55 and is for 8- 12 years. Of course you don’t need the ribbon - just make a few of these and put out on display to be admired!You will need:A large yellow pompomOrange craft foamYellow craft feathersGoogly eyesYellow ribbonKey-ring attachmentGlueInstructions:Cut a small triangle from orange craft foam and attach, along with your googly eyes, to form the face.

Use a paper plate and some craft cupboard bits and pieces to make a cute bunny mask - perfect for Easter!You will need:A paper plate Pink paintPink cardWhite pipe cleaner (chenille stem)Elastic threadGlueBlack penInstructions:Paint the back of the paper plate pink and leave to dry. Cut out two eye holes. Snip the pipe cleaner into 3 and twist together in the centre. Glue to the centre of the face.Cut out a nose from pink card and glue to the centre of the pipe cleaners.You will need:

Use a dab of glue to attach a loop of ribbon to the back of the pompom, and then stick on a bundle of feathers for the tail over the top of it. If you place them carefully, two of them can protrude underneath the pompom for feet.Tie your key-ring attachment to the other end of the ribbon.

Marbled Eggs are fun for kids to make - and pretty to display at Easter, too. You will need marbling inks, which are available in most craft stores.You will need:Marbling inksPlastic eggsOld large yogurt pot or small bucketWooden skewers or pipe cleanersInstructions:Fill your bucket about 2/3 full of cold water. Drop a few drops of marbling ink into the water and stir with a skewer or pipe cleaner. Add more colors, stirring after each until you are happy. Use a wooden skewer or pipe cleaner to hold an egg (they usually have small holes in them) and dip the egg into the water, swishing it around to make sure the entire egg becomes covered in ink.Stand the skewer in a pot so the egg can dry.

Children can sew this pretty daisy picture to give as a gift (mount it and frame in a simple frame like ours) or use it on the front of a card for someone special,You will need:White and yellow embroidery thread or yarnGreen cardNeedle with large eye (blunt for younger children)Instructions:Sketch out your design on the back of the card.Put the card on a folded newspaper, and, following the outline that you have drawn, punch holes with your needle. It’s Never Too Late to Learn

Going back to College after time out to have a child sounds quite a daunting prospect, but it’s a choice that many students at Norton Radstock College have made in order to develop their careers.

‘I chose to go back to College as a route into University’, said Vicky, Level 3 Access to HE in Health & Social Care. ‘I used to work in customer services and had time off to look after my three children. It’s a nice atmosphere, with some great people on the course.’‘I wanted to do something different’, said Lauren, Level 2 Floristry who started a course soon after having a child. It’s been really hands-on and has allowed me to keep my options open to either find work or carry on learning’.

The College provides a wide range of vocational courses at all levels, from Level 1 through to Foundation Degree. There’s an on-site nursery, a free bus service from surrounding locations and ample free car parking. People sometimes say finance is an issue, but the College is able to advise students on this, which can be dependent on your current level of qualifications or any benefits claimed. Some students may also be eligible for an Adult Learners Grant (ALG). The on-site Student Support Services team can provide more information. The College also works closely with Nextstep, who can provide general guidance on training, jobsearch and CV writing.

Norton Radstock College also has a range of courses that are free for people who are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, including Sage Computerised Accounts, Introduction to Administration, Introduction to Care, Door Supervisor and a range of flexible IT courses. Funding is also available for some part-time courses through the Give Us a Break project, which enables carers in B&NES to try something new and get back into education.

There are a few things that some people dream about doing. For some they want to climb Mount Everest, some want to see the ancient pyramids, and some want to learn to ride a horse. If you or your children wish to learn to ride a horse I’ll give you just a couple of things that you should learn to do right at the start.

One of the fi rst things that you should do when you learn to ride a horse is to learn how to lead one. That’s probably not what you had in mind but still, it’s important.

You shouldn’t be standing at the end of the lead rope trying to pull your horse along and you also shouldn’t be standing at their shoulder letting them lead you along. There’s no control in either of those methods. The best way to lead a horse is to stand with your shoulder pretty close to their throatlatch and about a foot over to the side of them. That way you have enough room between the two of you for comfort. With one hand right below the lead snap and the other holding the rest of the lead line, you will step forward with the horse hopefully following. If it doesn’t then you just simply push gently in the direction you want to go with the hand that has the snap. That will give you the most control over the horse.

Secret 4 - Starter over sweet Have a starter instead of a dessert. This might seem a hard one for most of us who have a sweet tooth but I’ve found that if you have a starter and a main course by the time it gets to the dessert it’ll really only be your mind that wants the dessert. If you truly cannot resist, then it should be enough to just order one to share with your friends.

Secret 5 - To drink or not to drink Ideally you would have drunk enough water before eating so you won’t feel thirsty. If you’re still thirsty, ask for a herbal tea or a glass of hot water (with a dash of fresh lemon juice) to sip with meal rather than a glass of cold water. It is better to drink water that is warm or room-temperature so that the body does not have to use as much energy to bring it up to body temperature. If you do drink cold water (no ice please!) remember that is still better than sparkling. However, recognise that drinking an excessive amount with your meal actually encourages you to eat more because you will be reducing your digestive capacity.

Ingredients

350g (12 oz) plain fl our150g caster sugar1 tsp salt3 tsp caster sugar175g (6 oz) unsalted butter120ml water24 dessertspoons jam

1. Add fl our, salt, sugar and butter to a food processor and mix until coarse crumbs are formed.2. Add the water and continue to blend until a ball is formed. 3. Chill the pastry for 30 minutes or so4. Grease 2 shallow tart tins and roll out the pastry on a fl oured surface until it is thin. 5. Cut out rounds with a cutter and place into tart tins. 6. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove and spoon a dessertspoonful of jam per round, and put back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes.7. Cool on a wire rack.

As mothers, fi nding time for ourselves can be nearly impossible. There are always a million things on our to-do list that we mark as a high priority. At the end of the day, there just isn’t any more time.I recently made a list of all the tasks I do throughout the day. I made a new list for each day for about a week. I estimated how long I thought I was spending on each task. At the end of the week, I took a look at my lists and realised I was wasting quite a bit of time. Can you believe I spent a total of 15 hours checking and responding to emails during that week? That was just email! Now I know I don’t get that many emails. I tend to get sidetracked when I’m reading my email. That is my problem.I dare you to create similar lists for yourself for a week and see where you stand.

Make time...Scheduling time for ME.If you want to have time for yourself, you really need to schedule it in. We schedule our work hours, we schedule in time for cooking dinner and spending time with the kids. We even schedule play dates for our children. Why don’t we schedule play dates for ourselves? These dates could be just browsing in a shops. They could be taking a bath or reading a book. Whatever it is that you need to help you unwind and feel alive, is what you need to schedule in to your daily calendar. You should be taking at least 15-60 minutes per day for yourself.You need to schedule these dates in for yourself. You will rarely have a spare hour just pop up where you can decide to take off and do something for you unless you schedule it in.

Exercise also helps children sleep well at night and stay alert during the day. Such habits established in childhood help adolescents maintain a healthy weight despite the hormonal changes, rapid growth and social influences that often lead to overeating, and active children are more likely to become fit adults.Follow these tips to keep your child active:

Pep up the children’s bedrooms by decorating the walls with some home made bunting. First, draw a triangle on some card using a ruler. Make the base of th triangle 23cms, and the 2 sides 28cms. Cut this out, and use it as a template to make more triangles from wrapping paper, newspaper, crepe paper or tissue. Next, take 2 of the matching triangles and sand-wich them together, using glue or sticky tape at the top with a drinking straw cut to size in between. Thread a length of string through the straws at the top of each triangle, and it’s ready to hang!

Hang out the Bunting…

First pre-heat the oven to 170 degrees C. Take some boiled fruit sweets and some metal shape cut-ters. Line a baking sheet with foil spray the surface with cooking oil and place the cutters on to it. Put the sweets into the cutter and pop in the oven for about 6 minutes until the sweets have melted. Take out the tray and swirl the liquid around with a cocktail stick until it fi lls the cutter. Be very careful this liquid can get very hot! Leave to cool off and remove from the cutter when still a little sticky but cold. Leave to harden and enjoy!

Make edible stained glass…

To make realistic looking snow for modelling, all you need is soap fl akes and water. Use 2 mugs full of soap fl akes to half a cup of water and then whisk them together with an electric mixer until the gloop is as thick as whipped cream. Add more soap or water until the consistency is right and then leave the mixture overnight before modelling it into shapes. It dries out once shaped and lasts several weeks.

Make it snow...

You don’t need a machine to make your own pasta, but you do need to knead like crazy! Take 600g of fl our and a half a dozen eggs. Place the fl our in a bowl, make a well in it and add the eggs. Take a fork and mix them all together, then use clean fi ngers to mix it a bit more, rubbing the fl our and eggs between your fi ngers until it is all bound together in a big doughy ball. Then knead and knead until your arms ache. Once the dough is smooth, cover it with clingfi lm and put it in the fridge for an hour or so. Next, roll out the dough on a fl oury surface until it’s as thin as card. Cut the pasta sheets to the shape you want and cook for about 3 minutes in boiling water.

Make your own pasta…

Take a potato and cut it in half. Draw a simple shape on the cut surface with a felt tip pen and then carefully cut round the shape so that it sticks out from the rest of the potato. Press the shape into a saucer of poster paint, then print on to paper or card. If you use fabric paint, this is a great way to brighten up a white t shirt.

Do some potato printing...

Use a tea cup to measure out two cups of Epsom salts, one cup of course salt (sea salt or rock salt) and half a cup of baking soda. Mix them together in a bowl, the add about 20 drops of aromatherapy oil. If you want them to be an attractive colour you can add a few drops of food colouring fi rst. Mix thoroughly and then spread the salts in a thin layer on a tray lined with greaseproof paper and let them dry out. Store the fi nished salts in a wide-mouthed jar. If you want to make them for a gift, make 2 bowls of salts in 2 different colours and then layer them in a jar!

Make your own bath salts...

Line up 4 or 5 chairs for children to wriggle under, followed by a paddling pool to splash through. Place bricks at intervals for kids to use as stepping stones, balance a plank on two bricks to walk along, arrange a rope in a twirly shape to tip toe through and set out bin bags to have a sack race in, bean bags or potato’s to throw into bins and a football to kick or bounce ten times. Time each child as they work their way through the course.

Make a garden obstacle course...

Gather some smooth stones and paint them using acrylic or tester pots of household paint. Once dry, stick on some goggly eyes and paint on a teeth-baring mouth. You can then give them away as paperweights.

Make stone monsters...

Step 1: take a plain white carnation with a long stem. With a sharp knife (and the help of a parent), split the carnation’s stem lengthwise, from the bottom to about halfway up. Step 2: fi ll 2 glasses with water. Use food colouring to turn the water in one glass dark red and the other blue. Step 3: place the glasses next to each other, with one half of the carnation’s stem in each glass. Step 4 : Check the carnation a day later and 2 days later. You will be able to tell in glorious technicolor how the water travels up the stem and reaches the petals!
