If you are looking to move on to a Level 3course after your GCSEs you may be trying to decide between A Levels or a morevocational BTEC Diploma course. What willbe the best option for you?

The main difference between these courses is that A Levels are assessed throughexaminations with some coursework modules, whilst BTEC courses are mostly courseworkbased with some practical assessments orwork experience.

Both of these options can be used to progresson to a range of opportunities includingemployment, Apprenticeships, further studyprogrammes or university.

Choosing whether to study an A Level orBTEC programme can be a tough decision tomake, that’s why within some subject areas,we offer the opportunity to mix and match A Level, BTEC and GCSE re-take courses tocreate a broader combination of qualifications.

The table below shows the comparisonbetween BTEC and A Level qualifications. When you come in for an interview with yourtutor, you will be able to discuss theappropriate courses for you, based on yourexpected GCSE results and plans for thefuture. Depending on the subject area, youmay be able to combine a BTEC qualificationwith A Levels or GCSE qualifications.

A Levels

A Levels are a two year programme ofacademic study. The main benefit is thatyou can spread your options over a rangeof subjects, according to your interests andyou can study those subjects in greaterdepth. If you’re planning on going touniversity you’ll probably need three orfour A Levels, sometimes in specificsubjects.

In recent years A Levels have beenmodular, so you would have sat AS levelexams at the end of your first year. The ASgrade contributed 50% of the final A Levelgrade with the A2 year accounting for theother 50%. You could also retake the ASlevel to improve your overall mark.

However, the Government has decided toreform A Levels and move to a more linearsystem where all exams will take place at

MATHS &ENGLISH

qualifications in mathsand english are whatemployers demand. Theyare the most importantvocational skills you can haveHowever, surveys repeatedly show thatemployers are dissatisfied with the literacyand numeracy skills of school and collegeleavers and many use these qualifications as a filter in their recruitment process. Thismeans that if you can’t demonstrate that youhave the required skills in maths and English, you might not even get an interview.

I won’t need maths and English in my job.

All jobs require a certain level of maths and English skills. For example:

•Drama - you’ll need maths and Englishskills for reading scripts, operating soundand lighting equipment and developingyour own workshops

•Hairdressing - you’ll need maths and Englishskills for meeting and greeting customers, booking appointments and calculating theright quantities for mixing colours

•Health and Social Care - you’ll need mathsand English skills for working out your dailyschedule, ordering supplies, administeringmedication and communicating with otherhealth professionals.

Without the appropriate level of maths and English skills, an employer may not even select you for interview. You must be able to demonstrate on your CV and in a job application that you have the skills they need. You will limit the progressionopportunities within your job role if you havepoor maths and English skills - you might notbe able to get that promotion if you can’tprove that you can manage that level of responsibility.

It’s not just about work - it’s about yourconfidence and ability to use maths andEnglish skills in everyday life and decisions you need to take.

In response to the concerns about poor skillsin maths and English, the Government hasmade a commitment to help raise standards. If you fail to achieve a good pass - grade C orabove - in Maths or English GCSE by thetime you finish secondary school you mustcontinue to study the subjects in post-16education until you get these qualifications.

Page 21: Farnham College School Leavers Prospectus 2016:17

19

What does this mean for me?

•Once you receive your GCSE results, if you have not achieved a grade C inMaths or English we will enrol you on an additional course to allow you toprogress your skills. This won’t prevent you from continuing with your mainqualification, you will study your Maths and English alongside it.

•You only need to continue with the subject that you haven’t achieved a gradeC in, so for example if you achieved a grade C in English, but a D in Maths, you would only need to continue studying Maths.

•Depending on your GCSE result, you may be able to re-take your GCSE or aFunctional Skills course may be more appropriate. Functional Skills developyour ability to use maths and English in a range of contexts and to transferthese skills from one situation to another.

•Even if you have achieved a grade C or above, all of our courses will developyour maths and English skills and embed them within the vocational area, sothat you can see how important they are to working life.

•Extra support for maths and English is available.

How does the College know how to help me?

•When you enrol at college you may be asked to take an initial assessment onyour maths and English skills.

• It is really important that you focus on completing this assessment to thebest of your ability.

•The results of this initial assessment and your previous grades gained fromschool will tell us which qualifications and what support you will need tofurther develop your individual maths and English skills.

The College will continue to offer you careers guidance and invite you to attendprogression events throughout your studies so that we can support you intaking decisions for further study, training and employment.

Page 22: Farnham College School Leavers Prospectus 2016:17
