S pring has sprung! It was a long and brutal winter in many parts of the country, and although, as of this writing, there is STILL snow falling in the poor, winter‐weary Northeast, for most of us at least
the inevitable signs of spring are finally evident. Daffodils are pushing their way up, flowering trees are blooming, the days are growing longer, the unrelenting mud is finally starting to dry up… And most importantly, we’re dusting off our racing gear and making our first appearances of the year at race practice and actual race meets! In particular, congratula‐tions to CWA’s newest club, Georgia Rag Racing, who recently held their inaugural meets! Look for meet results, photos and write‐ups of these early meets in the next issue of Line and Lure.
This Annual issue of Line and Lure celebrates the incredibly competitive year of racing and showing that was 2010. We had nearly 100% participa‐tion in the Top 10 ad feature, and I’m pleased to introduce a new picto‐rial for the Honorable Mention dogs as well. Thanks to everyone for par‐ticipating in this important historical reference! I must give a special shout out to Lisa Ochoa, who volunteered to help out with ad design for this issue at a time I really needed it most. I was so grateful to be able to accept her generous offer. Thank you Lisa, you really were a lifesaver!
The next issue will be our annual Memorial issue, featuring tributes to human and canine friends loved and lost. Since our loved ones live on in memory, let’s bring them back to life in spirit, at least, by sharing those treasured memories with the CWA family. Of course, regular advertising is always welcome. Please get your ads and other submissions to me by May 15th.
As we embark on our third decade of racing what we show and show‐ing what we race with CWA, I wish you all good luck and safe running!

PLEASE SEND YOUR GRADING GUIDE UPDATES It's time once again for everyone to take a look at the Grading Guide and let me know of new titles to be added to existing dogs, and of retired dogs that need to be moved to the Archives. In particular, I need to know about any dog finishing a conformation championship, since DPC/DPCX titles are awarded based on a conformation title. In the interests of keeping the Guide at a manageable size, I have moved quite a few dogs to archives that do not appear to have run for the past 3‐5 years. If you are planning to run your retired dog in a meet this year, you may want to take a look and see where it appears. By the same token, if you expect your archived dog to run a complete meet, let me know and I will put it back in the main guide. Dogs that are running on a part‐time basis do not need to be on the full guide since their average will not change unless they run a full meet. GET YOUR FREE WEB PAGES HERE! If you are the proud owner/operator of a SRA or DPCX dog, you are entitled to have a free page on the CWA website. The page should have pedigree information (if your dog is listed in The Whippet Archives, a link there will suffice) and photos, along with text you would like to add. Please get in touch with me for more information. Lisa Ochoa : [email protected]

2010 Top 10 CWA C O N F O R M A T I O N
What else can we say about this wonderful dog? He has been so very consistent – #4 in both 2009 and 2010, and top canadian dog for the past 2 years. He often placed top 10 throughout the year locally and when visiting our new midwest friends. Smoke is a hard working dog with unmatched vocal enthusiasm, one who still has misunderstandings with his racing muzzle, and gives his best in any and all conditions.
Brimstone has lived with my husband, Stephen, and me since he was 8 weeks old. We co-owned him with Carolyn Mountan
until her death in 2009.
Right from the start, he possessed the magical ability to stand out from the crowd.
Carolyn showed Brimstone until her illness became too severe for her to continue; he was shown after that only occasionally, and always through the kindness of Carolyn’s many friends. Carolyn and Brimstone did have several very exciting moments in the show ring, including a class win at his rst show, the 2007 National Specialty, and a 5-point major and Award of Merit at his second show. Brimstone was also BOS in the sweepstakes that day.
After Carolyn’s death, we resumed showing Brimstone on a limited basis, with the goal of nishing him to honor her aspirations for him. In 2010, Laura Kieffer took over handling Brimstone; he nished his champion-ship in one weekend, adding three majors (along with a BOB and two BOS over specials!) to go with the 5-point major that Carolyn put on him at his second show. Laura also handled him, in his only time out as a spe-cial, to a 5-point Select award at the 2010 Midwest specialty.
Carolyn’s top priority as a breeder was to produce multi-purpose whip-pets, and she felt strongly that Brimstone would be able to do many things well. In keeping with this idea, Brimstone was groomed not only for the show ring but also for lure coursing and racing. He participated in ASFA lure coursing and CWA straight racing on a limited basis, with enough success to earn some titles and achieve the goal of proving his versatility.
And Brimstone is so much more than a pretty face and a ne running dog. His sweet temperament makes him an ideal and much-loved family com-panion. His loving nature is the cherry on top of the wonderful and multi-talented whippet that Carolyn gifted us with from the nal Wistwind litter. We hope that he will help the Wistwind ideals of versatile, beautiful whip-pets with excellent temperaments live on far into the future.
Brimstone has been CERF and BAER tested clear/normal.

“Kai” came to live at Swiftsure in July 2010 at 18 months of age. We’ve had the most amazing 6 months – she finished her show championship in Canada in one weekend and is currently the #1 Whippet in Canada. Her US debut with us saw her take a Specialty BOB from the classes, followed by another Specialty major BOW.
“Kai” was quickly race trained and competed in 2 weekends of racing, improving her performance each time. She was shown at only 3 race matches, where she won 2 of them. “Kai” was also awarded BOS Adult at the Annual CWA Match, judged by Karen Lee.
Watch for our beautiful girl on the track, in the ring and on the coursing field.

This award was introduced in 2010, and is intended to identify and rank the overall career of the racing Whippet. The Performance Racer (PR) title is based on the number of accumulated race points a Whippet earns throughout his racing career. To achieve the PR, a whippet must earn fifty (50) race points. Any holder of the PR title who accumulates an additional one hundred (100) race points will earn another title and be known as a PR2. Further PR titles will be awarded after each addi‐tional one hundred (100) race points earned with the numeral being increased to reflect the number of titles earned. A whippet must complete the meet to qualify the points towards this title. This title is continued during and after other titles are accumulated, as its purpose is to reflect on the merit of the racing Whippet’s entire career. Total race points are recorded on the CWA website grading guide, and are updated at the end of each racing year. The 2010 Performance Racer titles awarded were earned at race meets dating from April 2003 through December 2010. Hereafter, titles will be recorded at the end of each calendar year, and will include only those titles earned during the year.

A lamo Area Whippet Club held its Third Anniversary Race Meet in Bush Louisiana December 11th and 12th. The Gulf coast weather was quite balmy for the dogs and owners who trekked south from Wisconsin and brisk enough for the East Coast dogs. AAWC Volunteer
Extraordinaire Sami Hirko brought the lone Texas whippet (and veteran) Pearl over to join the Lou‐isiana dogs , who helped make the entry 22 on Saturday and 19 on Sunday. Saturday’s first race saw six FTEs take to the boxes after a short brief for the new CWA participants. Both dogs and owners showed a lot of enthusiasm and by the end of the weekend they seemed to be old pros. In a foretelling of their eventual successes, Whodat won the first race with Flynn and Shockey tied for second. Kenzie and Deacon tied for fourth in what was to be observed all day. Although Spuds did not finish the first race he caught on to finish all subsequent races. No Ds ran Saturday, and the C races after the first race were Pibb, Augie, Monkey and Pearl for the first set and Vendome, Fanta and Gigi for the second set. B racers were Simone, Indie, Dickens, Bacon and Junkie. The first of many great high point races for the weekend was starting A racers finishing in the following order‐ Bomber, Cruz, Walker and Scraggles. Program two went to four races. In the high point Bomber took first followed closely by the FTE Whodat. Cruz settled for third, with the surprise speed dog Vendome turning on the heat. Pibb and Simone rounded out high point. Program three brought into the highpoint Whodat sixth, Cruz fifth, Indie fourth, Vendome third, Augie second and Bomber first. The fourth program had most of the dogs running tight races in some great competition. Bomber finished the high point and the meet undefeated. Vendome took second in the high point and wound up tying Augie (third in high point) for second in the meet. Cruz’s fourth place in high point matched his fourth in the meet. Simone was fifth for the meet after her win in the fourth program third race. Indie was sixth in the meet, fifth in the final high point and FTE Whodat wound up with a sixth place in the high point and seventh place in the meet. Sami Hirko left her position as box op‐erator to judge the match and selected Augie for first place, followed by Pibb. Both dogs were High Scoring C dogs. Meet winner Bomber was third in the Match with FTE Whodat fourth. The match was held as the sun was setting and a light mist falling.

Race goers tended to the dogs and then a trip into the Big Easy was on the agenda for Beignets and Café Au Lait at the New Orleans institute Café Du Monde. The ride across the causeway was made enjoyable by the company and libations. A quick dinner and some sightseeing and folks were in bed in time to get up for another great day of racing. Sundays race meet started out with three D dogs. While Kenzie and Shockey moved on, Fanta, Junkie, Augie, and Spuds came and went to keep veteran Pearl company. At age 7½ Pearl man‐aged to get the edge on a few dogs and did not repeat her Turtle award from the day before. Pro‐gram one again contained two C races. Vendome, Monkey and Deacon ran first, followed by Flynn, Spuds, Gigi, and Fanta. B racers were Walker, Pibb, Whodat, Augie and Junkie. Program 1 high point had Bomber taking first, followed by Cruz, then Indie and in fourth was Scraggles. Program 2 high point was again won by Bomber, followed by Cruz, Vendome, Indie, Flynn and Walker. Program 2 had four races but, after scratches, the third program was down to 3 races. High point again saw Bomber in first, with Scraggles edging out the still fast Vendome. Whodat and Cruz led Indie. The final program races were highlighted by the serenading Calvin. Calvin decided that his braying was not louder than the squawker. His solution was to hum into his garbage can lid. After enjoy‐ing his impromptu concert, the races got down to business. The final program saw Spuds, Fanta Pearl and Shockey come down the track. After running well all weekend Gigi decided to finish early. The second race was led by Pibb, Monkey , Deacon and Junkie tied ,and Kenzie overcoming her early shyness once her owner stayed at the line to catch. High point was again won by Bomber, giving him his second meet win undefeated. Whodat blazed away to second, followed by Cruz, Flynn, Vendome and Scraggles. Whodat, Cruz and Scraggles then tied for second in the meet. Flynn and Vendome had their own tie for third place. Dr Alice Sowders, DVM from Ohio was Sunday’s match judge and she went with Vendome, Whodat, Bomber and Flynn.

...is on the way! (He WAS, after all, just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!) Julia (BIF Can CH Vivace Veni, Vidi, Vici, SC, FCh, DPC, TRP, CGC) has been bred to Marshall (Can CH Fireworks Eminence Front, ARX, DPCX, NARX-2, TRP, PR-3, SGDC ). Puppies due on their Grandma’s 13th Birthday: April 18, 2011 Marshall was the #1 CWA racer on the continent for 2010. Before Julia had a muscle injury, she had 9.5 ARX points. Both are OFA Heart and CERF clear. The combination of sunshine for temperaments, health and vigor, willingness to please, and speed, make this a litter of a lifetime for us.
