FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

February…..a short month….but quite a busy month at First Calvary. Thank you, Diaconate Ministry, for serving over 200 of our Mature Adults on yesterday at the Annual Honoring Our Elders Luncheon. We are looking for our Married Couples to be in the place on this Friday and Saturday at the XO Married Couples Simulcast. For those that are available, the event will start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday….and please don’t let that “during the day time” on Friday stop you and your spouse from being here. Come on over after work….REGISTER TODAY! It is always a blessed, enriching time.

On next Sunday during both worship services we will celebrate Scholarship Sunday, with Guest Dr. Elwood Robinson, Chancellor of Winston Salem State University. This is our first time having a non-clergy person as a Worship Guest, but if you’ve been on his Facebook page you know that Dr. Robinson has been sharing some very thoughtful and theological meditations…and I will present to him his Ministerial License next Sunday…LOL. Please consider making a contribution towards our Scholarship efforts ($100.00 is a good goal….however, it can be more or less but give SOMETHING).

Also coming is our Young Adult Conference. Young Adults, age 18-38….we are looking for you! YAM is on the move, with new leadership and fresh ideas, and we want…..no we NEED…you to become an active part of this newly revamped and revised Ministry. Get ready for some fun, fellowship, and teaching on February 16th-18th. Please fill out and turn in the Young Adult Survey Card in today’s bulletin. We need your input and we want to know how to contact you and keep you informed. Due to the Couples Simulcast, our Pearls of Praise (Sisterhood Ministry) will have a special kick-off meeting on Saturday, February 24th, at 9:30 a.m. Ministers Torie Forte, Lynette Gregory, Micara Sessoms and others are moving forward with this Ministry. Plan to be there and join the “Transformation”.

It is African American History Month at First Calvary! The month of February is designated as Black History/African American month and even though for some it’s just another month, there is a reason that we should pause and reflect on the historical contributions that African Americans have made not only in America but around the world. The first celebration of the Black History Month took place at Kent State in February 1970. In 1976 as part of the United States Bicentennial, the informal expansion of Negro History Week to Black History Month was officially recognized by the U.S. government. President Gerald Ford spoke in regards to this, urging Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” We are ready for our Drama Ministry presentations for the Month….they are always a treat and a reminder of our rich history as a people. As we celebrate during Worship with our Drama Ministry, let us find some time as a family to share what knowledge we have with one another. Also, this month we will feature a ‘Who Wants to be a “History-aire’” insert to challenge your knowledge of those who have made our history. Please participate and maybe even learn a thing or 2! Here’s a history question, straight outta OUR history…how many Pastors have there been at First Calvary? Including Pastor Davis... History is all around us….for instance, find someone who grew up in this Church and talk to them about how far we have come. What legacy are we leaving….as a Church and as individuals? Years from now, how will they talk about the history WE’VE made? Hopefully, it will be some exciting talk, because we are AN EXCITING CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION!

THE DEACON’S MESSAGE

Have you ever become so busy with what you’re doing that you find yourself lacking something…. you can’t seem to put your finger on what it is, but you know it is there. Here’s a clue. It is akin to going through a whole day without drinking water. The end result is not good for your body because you become dehydrated. The last time I checked the body can survive without many things, but water is not one of them. Our walk with Christ is the same. If we do not take him into our lives daily we will become spiritually dehydrated. The result is the same as if you do not drink water daily…. you will not survive. David proclaimed these very thoughts in Psalm 42:2 (NIV) when he said, “ I thirst for God, the living God. When can I come and stand before him?” If you find yourself weary during the day maybe you should have a glass of living water. It will make all the difference. Especially since it is the key to your survival.
