FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

On May 24, 1981, my Pastoral journey began at a Church that will always be dear to my heart… St. John Baptist Church, 820 North Cherry Drive, Lanett, Alabama, 36863…… I learned very early on that Pastoring isn’t for cowards! This congregation, along with all others that I’ve been blessed to serve, has allowed me to lead them with joy and humility. From Bible Study this past week, it is in my serving the people of God that I take pleasure…not in procedures and policies but in people! On August 26, 1991, I came to serve at First Calvary and a GREAT journey began…and as you know, I’m still here attempting to do what thus saith the Lord. It reminds me to pause to reflect on how well I am doing as a vessel for God in this work of Pastoral ministry. I have made a personal decision to continue this year in leading and preaching here at First Calvary Baptist Church. I have been in prayer that God will keep me mentally and physically strong to continue to SERVE and LEAD in such a way that God will continue to get all the Glory! Leaders, officers, ministers and interested disciples, don’t forget that you all are invited to and expected and encouraged to attend our Annual Brainstorming session on June 6th, which is a ministry work of our Visionary Ministry. Many comments are often made that these sessions have little or no effect in the life of this congregation. Well, let me just softly and tenderly say to those who feel that way, ask your friends or co-workers if their congregations offer such an opportunity and then come tell me it’s not worth it! This year, in light of our current life circumstances and our concern for our health and safety, the Brainstorming Session will still be held in the Fellowship Hall of the church, but will also be available via Zoom. In the bulletin is the information that you will need to participate if you care not to venture out to the Church. As we have done with other events, Social Distancing will be in place. During this time of sharing we will focus on the process of Pastoral Succession, so please plan to join us in some way.

As we move to the close of Revival/Evangelism Month, I remind us that there is still work in Ministry to be done, even now. As it states in our Church Mission Statement, we are a congregation with an “evangelistic thrust”. Let us keep in mind that the best model of evangelism is Lifestyle Evangelism. Jesus stated it best by saying that we are “The Light of The World and The Salt of the Earth….” (Matthew 5: 13–16). Making disciples is our task, so step out of your comfort zones and do what thus said the Lord. We are to seek the lost and spread the message of Jesus Christ! According to Matthew’s account, Jesus said to his Disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24-25). When I think about what Jesus requires and how He admonishes us, I realize that we have

the great task of making disciples based upon who we say we are as a church body. Making disciples cannot happen in any of our churches without those who disciple. Not those who shout or sing, not those who praise or proclaim, but those who disciple….and we are a discipling Church. Join us in the movement in Bible Study and Sunday School…. and now is a great time to invite someone to join us…that’s a form of discipleship.

Our WOW Word of the week is PEACE. A few Sunday’s ago, I shared from Jesus’ experience with the Disciples where he gave them this word, “My Peace I Leave With You….” As we continue to navigate through these pandemic times, which are also God’s Time, I hope and pray that as the people of God, we live each day in His PEACE. God’s got this…God’s got us….and it is His PEACE that will keep us safe in body, mind and Spirit. When there is chaos all around, it is this PEACE that keeps us grounded and allows us to live in the certainty of God’s Presence. HE will keep us in PERFECT PEACE…..and it is the PEACE beyond all understanding. We are not supposed to understand it…we are just to live in it. Feel that PEACE, y’all…. we gon’ be alright! As always, we never forget that we are AN EXCITING CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION!

THE DEACON’S MESSAGE

Really, all we have to do is get beyond the moments in life when we think we have failed, or the world is crashing in, or that God has forgotten about us temporarily. Yes, we are human, but that should never be an excuse to give up on trusting God for everything. God has given each of us a measure of faith for a reason. Faith acts as our shock absorbers as we travel the bumpy road of life. The potholes and pits we are bound to run into, have less of an impact when our faith is actively engaged. 1 Peter 1:6-7, NLT reminds us to hold on. “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” Remember God has a plan for you, and it extends beyond this moment. No matter how tough life may be, remember, your faith in God propels you to the joy that lies ahead… beyond this moment.

The Health Tip

MAKE MINE WATER

75% of Americans are chronically

dehydrated. In 37% of Americans, the thirst

mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 30%.

One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

Drinking water is a great practice in the current pandemic.

The bottom line? Drink water for a healthier YOU!

What Can I Do? Here are some things we do with some

available time:

Read a chapter of the Bible

every day

Do a devotional

Start a new gratitude journal,

writing about 3 things you are

thankful for each day

Text a different person to check in

on them every day

Watch an old favorite TV show

(Binge watch it, see a few episodes

every day)

Watch a classic, black movie

Go for a walk around your

neighborhood

Do some yardwork

Try a new recipe

Start a Pinterest page of some

favorite things

Read a good book

Do a house cleaning project every

day or every other day

Call someone and have a good

conversation

Have a Praise and Worship party-

Cut on some favorite Gospel songs

SOME SCRIPTURES ON PEACE

Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace

always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

-2 Thessalonians 3:16

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye

might have peace. In the world ye shall have

tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the

world. -John 16:33

Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind

[is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.

-Isaiah 26:3

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called

the children of God. -Matthew 5:9

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace,

as in all churches of the saints. -1 Corinthians 14:33
