Note:

Dry butt joints for fire

rated linings are possible

if there are no require-

ments for the surface

finish. Butt joints will be

visible in some finishes.

The installation needs to

follow the instruction as

per approval.

Joint design

Joint designThere are different options for the jointing of Gypsum Fibreboards. Some specific rules must be followed for fire rated linings. The following details show the different joint options available for fermacell Gypsum Fibreboards or fermacell Firepanels A1.

It is important to choose the appropriate joint design early on in the design process. The following joint options are suitable for fire rated linings.

Dry butt joint – Gap ≤ 1mm fermacell Joint Filler1) – Joint width ½ × panel thickness + max. 3 mm

fermacell Glued Joint1) – Joint width ≤ 1 mm

fermacell Tapered Edge Board1) – fermacell Jointing Tape and fermacell Joint Filler

1) The differential movement of the material must be considered if the Fermacell boards are fixed directly on to the CLT. Joints can open up due to the differential movement of the substrate. This must be specially considered if a wet screed system is being installed or heaters are used for the drying out process.

isn’t needed. The K260 criteria accord-ing to EN 13501-2[3] is used to assess the fire performance of the lining system. Timber structures which have to fulfil a high performance fire resist-ance need to comply with K260 criteria (K-classes) for the fire lining. The system with the K-class ensures the fire protection of the load bearing structure for 60 minutes and this prevents the self-ignition of the timber element. The self-ignition point of timber is around 300 °C.

Fire Strategy

An early involvement of the whole design team in the fire strategy allows a tailor made solution for a specific project. It can make the whole fire strategy more economical and effi-cient. This is especially important for multi storey buildings with sprinkler systems to make use of all the poten-tial benefits.

Collaboration of the whole design team from the beginning to the end of

a project is necessary to ensure the best and most efficient solution for each project. It also allows a better quality control from design to comple-tion of the project. The fire protection requirements of each individual ele-ment can be specified and optimised to give the most efficient solution. This approach can also enable the reduc-tion of the required K-class for certain elements. For example the reduction from a K260 class to K245/K230, from K290 to K260 or a K2120 to a K290, can result in a much more economical solution.

An individual fire strategy allows the realisation of bigger and more com-plex projects. It takes also project specific or individual requirements into account. It can also compensate for the lack of regulations or guidance for ground breaking projects.

The CLT structures can provide an individual and high performance solution combined together with an individual fire strategy giving a high level of protection and redundancy.

The system solutons with the K-class options describes the fire protective lining of a load bearing timber struc-ture. The lining must consist of non- combustible material to protect the combustible load bearing structure.

This provides a high performance and robust fire protection solution. It is especially suitable for multi storey CLT buildings. Where the fermacell is directly applied it provides a very robust lining which can withstand high impact forces, for example in lift shafts where an acoustic separation
